Connecticut, Georgetown interested in Oliver

Former Georgia Tech basketball player Brian Oliver has drawn favorable attention since his decision last week to transfer. Seton Hall, Penn State, Missouri, LaSalle and Delaware have contacted Oliver’s family to open recruitment, Oliver’s mother Zena said Tuesday. Connecticut, Georgetown, St. John’s and Syracuse have also indicated interest. She said all of those schools except for St. John’s and Missouri recruited Oliver out of high school.

“Right now, we have no timeline,” Zena Oliver said. “His main thing, I told him, is just finish up the summer session and finish the class strong, and we’ll go from there.”

Oliver put in transfer papers last week following his second season at Tech. Oliver said that he wanted to be closer to the family’s home in Delaware and play on a team that he felt was a better fit for him. Oliver’s father Robert has had health issues.

“I think he’s going to get closer to home,” Zena Oliver said.

Oliver averaged 10.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 22 games for the Yellow Jackets last season. His departure leaves new coach Brian Gregory with eight scholarship players.

Our last transfer to UCONN (Ed Nelson) didn’t turn out to well on the court. However, he wrote an amazing rap song about a pickup truck.

I wish him the best of luck. I would be leaning toward UCONN or Delaware.

Thanks for two good years. The fact that this young man is finishing the summer session of school speaks volumes to the character of this young man and his family. The GT family will miss him.

With Gregory out there recruiting so much, did he not take time to recruit his current players??? Oliver will be electric with some shot coaching, this is a huge loss for the team…

Yes Ed did get a ring with UCONN while sitting on the bench, but he didn’t get a Georgia Tech degree either. I say Ed lost out on that trade.

I guess somewhere in your career you realize you aren’t going to be an NBA player may not even start on the college team, so the shine comes off the thing. All that and his father getting sick, I can’t blame the kid and wish him all the luck. I just wonder if someone had coached him if this story of lost dreams would have turned out differently. Pick a school like Georgetown that has some academics, you are going to need it.

I hope he ends up at UConn or Georgetown. He struggled last season but with a new team and a new coach he can probably help out one of the big name teams alot.

@ Lunch Money NOW, Nerds! – GT is in the City of Atlanta’s midtown neighborhood. Hot chicks of all ages and ethnicity, everywhere. Maxim just listed Atlanta as it’s hotttest spot for meeting girls. Get off your PC, get out of the COW town of Athens and see the rest of the world. We even have kids wearing red and black Green Bay Packers hats that wash dishes and park our cars. But they don’t tend bar or wait tables, I think it’s a math thing.

For those uninformed people down here, UCONN has EXCELLENT academics. Its a top flight national public research university that continues to rise in the rankings. Ed Nelson and anyone else with a UCONN degree did just fine and has a very highly valued diploma.
