Georgia Tech basketball player Brian Oliver will transfer, leaving the Yellow Jackets with eight scholarship players for coach Brian Gregory’s first season.
In a press release issued by the school, Oliver, a forward, did not give a reason for leaving Tech.
“We are very appreciative of the two years Brian gave Georgia Tech and this basketball program,” Gregory said in a statement. “Brian is a talented young man and will do well, athletically as well as academically, wherever he lands. We wish him nothing but the best.”
Had Oliver returned, playing opportunity almost certainly wouldn’t have been a problem. Oliver was the third-leading scorer on last year’s team at 10.5 points behind Iman Shumpert (who left school for the NBA draft) and Glen Rice Jr. Further, Tech returns just one other forward, Kammeon Holsey. Incoming freshman Julian Royal, from Milton High, is the only other forward on the roster.

I’m not really sure where this is coming from. He would have easily had playing time next year and when he got hot, he was almost a sure thing outside of the three point line. Injuries and cold streaks slowed him down last year, but the guy certainly had the talent to stay in the starting five. Maybe someone behind him was making it seem like he wasn’t going to be “the guy,” or something like that. Although, now we get to listen to all of the hate from UGA fans saying that Gregory can’t hold onto talent . . .

Ah well, either way, gotta thank Mr. Oliver for his time and effort while here at the program. He was dealt a crappy hand having to play under Hewitt for two years, and maybe he just wants to go somewhere for success seeings as this might be another rought B-Ball year . . . Either way, thanks for your time and effort Oliver, we’ll miss seeing you play in the Old Gold and White.

this is just the start,When a program turns their back on a coach that the year before, made it to the ACC Championship game and won a NCAA game, It exposes the whole program…thats why GT was only able to hire a coach who was basically on the hot seat at Dayton…I know a another big secret that will come out next week also, it involves another Gt player…One of his former teamates play for the GREAT ATLANTA CELTICS and it has been confirmed..All of Gt players hate the GT fan base.Thats why Shump left early also…Next time please don’t let Mark Bradley determine who should be head coach!

Seeing as he scored 10 ppg w/ Hewitt, I’m sure now that he’s moving on, he’ll actually develop and score more in his junior season than he did in his sophomore season, more in his senior season than his junior one. Of course, I hope that current jackets will learn that will happen under CBG too.

Is someone really on here defending Hewitt…I mean REALLY?? the man couldn’t buy an ACC Win in his tenure. What was he 17-61 on the road in the ACC? It was past time for him to go. So he made it to the ACC Champ game…HE DID NOT WIN. And he made it to the final 4…yes that was great, but this society is a what have you done for me lately. And lately he has not done any thing! Not sure what Oliver is thinking…he would’ve easily started and likely been go-to guy. Oh well. CBG Will be fine, next year will be rebuilding year as expected.

Hewitt fan, are you on crack? Never once in any highly recruited player’s career did he get substantially better after his freshman year under Hewitt. The only guy I can think of that got better in 10 years is Anthony McHenry, that’s it. Hewitt was causing the GTAA to bleed money and season ticket holders. It’s business dude, plain and simple. And, according to ESPN, we made one of the best off-season hires for a coach since all the “up and comers” decided to stay small market this year.
Now, that said I think CPH is a class dude and I wish him well. I hope a fresh start can help find a rebirth in his career. He’s always been a hell of a recruiter and a good ambassador for Tech.

Hewitt fan, for the sake of argument then, tell me who got better under Hewitt’s watch? Jack had skills when he got to Tech. Aminu actually LOST talent under Hewitt (which is why his brother went to Wake). Young, Favors, J-Crit all played street ball for their one year at Tech. Who got better under Hewitt’s watch? The only coaches that were able to recruit more McDonald’s All Americans than CPH are in Chapel Hill, Durham, and Storrs. They won…a lot. Why didn’t Hewitt?

Eight scholarship players make it tough. But this is a “rebuilding year” because there is a new coach and a new systrem. GT will have a losing record just like UGA had with Fox in his first year.
And Duke with Coach K in his first year.
GT will have 2 scholarship players at each of the five positions.

I really hate arguing with a GT fan, they are so strange, but lets see
1.Big Luc, he came from Australia and could barely run, by his Junior year the ACC refs had to let teams just beat him to a near death to slow him down..He played in the NBA for a short period
2.Mario West, former WALK ON who under Hewitt got better and eventually played in the NBA
3.Will Bynum was horrible at Arizona, Hewitt used him perfect in the pick and roll, currently in the NBA
4. BJ Elder, I KNOW B.J PERSONALLY, from his days with the Celtics, i know for a fact that BJ game improved at GT, you don’t know him, you know Mark Bradley…
Well according to my sources, which is the AAU and high school basketball world, Everyone laughed that Gt fired a coach then hired a guy who had been to the NCAA’s 2 times in 8 years in a weak basketball conference, a guy who offense looked horrible at Dayton and was on the hot seat basically..GT could not fill the job with a decent coach because everyone knows mark Bradley brain washed GT fans…Hewitt found another job and Gt has another coach(lol) so it is over with, All i am saying is that GT will not be able to get any good players in the state for the next 5 years.Gt will have another player transfer either next week or early July..I heard it come out the guy mouth!..

Maybe, just maybe it had nothing to do with the coach, old or new, the program or anything else basketball related. Maybe the young man realized that his chances for success beyond college ball are slim or nil and he realized he wasn’t meant for the GT curriculum. Maybe he wants to go to a college where he can play ball, not have to work his butt off in the classroom and still get a degree.
yes, next year will be a tough year, but probably not as tough to stomach as the last 5 years have been. no, you are not risking your life by coming to Philips arena to watch the games. no, we will not lose every single recruit that was or are associated with the atlanta celtics.

I was so hoping we would be through with the mindless ramblings and incoherent defense of Hewitt that HewittFan brings to the table once Tech finally showed that fool the door.
AAU basketball is a cesspool of shady characters, hangers-on and manipulators. Hewitt was the most overmatched coach in ACC history not named Dino Gaudio. All that talent, even the ones he allegedly made better (I just threw up in my mouth) and he has as many ACC titles as the coach from Teen Wolf.
Zero!
Elder was already a big time prospect. Bynum wasn’t exactly chopped liver when he got to Tech. West was a 20 point per game scorer in high school at Douglas County, playing in a good region. Schenscher was a project who progressed to serviceable. When you’re 7 feet tall and the NBA doesn’t really want you, what does that tell you? Slow him down? Really? That might be the most laughable contention ever posited by Hewitt Fan. And that’s saying something.
Hewitt’s gone and all are glad, except Hewitt Fan. Go grab some time behind the George Mason bench and watch the program circle the drain and collapse into free fall.
George Mason boosters should ask for a sanity test for the AD who said Hewitt was known “as a good X and O guy.” Apparently, he spoke to no one who watched Tech basketball for the last decade. In 11 ACC seasons, Hewitt’s teams had losing conference records 7 times.

I wish Hewitt fan could explain how Anthony Morrow, one of the best 3 point shooters in NBA history, could go undrafted after having a less than stellar career at GT? Maybe the “fantastic” coach didn’t let him take enough 3 pointers in college? So much wasted talent… Also, Mario West is one of the hardest working players to ever put on a GT uniform. He made the Hawks because of his work ethic. Paul Hewitt had NOTHING to do with the guy’s work ethic…. Hewitt fan, can you tell me how many winning seasons Paul Hewitt had in the ACC? I will give you a hint. It’s greater than zero and less than two. I know you have your conspiracy theories about Duke and UNC, but with those two making up only four games a season, max, why did Paul Hewitt fail to have more than one winning season in the ACC? Lack of talent? If he was constantly recruiting from “The Great Atlanta Celtic Program,” then talent obviously can’t be the issue. Could it be the coach wasn’t very good?

Same story with all the rest of his stats. He got progressively worse over the course of his career and is a key reason we weren’t even competitive in the championship. As a freshman and sophomore he appeared to be a shoe-in first-round draft pick. But after four years of mostly underperforming, he never got past the D-League.
Anyone who would argue that Hewitt’s record at Tech isn’t as disastrous as it seems, and that he actually improved the talent under him despite all of the empirical evidence to the contrary, is a complete fool.

There you go again talking about ACC coaches getting fired. Frank Haith was not fired by Miami.
On Bradley’s blog you claimed that “7 or 8″ ACC coaches have been fired in the last 2 years (sounds like you are either not sure or just made the number up_. The only coaches fired after the last 3 seasons are Gaudio (WF), Lowe (NCSU), Hewitt (GT), Leitao (UVA) and Skinner (BC). Haith left Miami to go to Mizzou. Purnell left Clemson to go to DePaul. Gary W retired. Ole Roy, K, Hamilton, Greenberg are all still coaching.
Care to tell us who the other 2 or 3 are? I would have thought a self-proclaimed basketball insider such as yourself knows who the “7 or 8″ (sic) fired ACC coaches are.

Anytime ‘any school’ changes coaches, there is ‘risk’ of losing your existing players. The really sad part is that they have to sit out a year because of the schools decision to remove the coach they came to play for. If the school makes a change, any player at any school should have the right to transfer with no penalty.
Give the new coach a little time before deciding his fate… He seems to be trying to recruit the state first – that’s a start.
New building coming – would be patient.

UCLA has got to be the Kentucky of the west coast. All three players that left North Carolina’s program last year ended up there. The Wear brothers and Drew, all three head cases and now they are babysitting this Celtic crowd too. These schools make it too easy for the NCAA to follow the dots.
As for Hewitt. Has anyone seen the stock of Iman Shumpert jump up the last few weeks? No man outside Mark Richt can hide talent better than Hewitt. Time and time again players have shown up in the NBA and shocked the league at what they had been hiding down here in Atlanta.
It is my guess Gregory introduced Oliver to his first real basketball practice. Maybe he taught them that the head is not a rebounding device and the ball does not have to bounce from the hands to the head to the opponent, whatever silly drill that was the Jackets like so much. Maybe he worked on practicing free throws, inbounding the ball and conditioning for defense. It would be enough to make any prim donna quit.
Roy Williams chases em off somehow and wins national championships, watch next year’s crop, may be the best they ever had at Carolina after losing three Hewitt type high school All Americans. If these guys had stayed at Tech that may have been the sign we didn’t want to see out of this new coach. The day Drew left Carolina and Marshall became the point guard was the day Carolina won the national championship next year. I got a feeling something like that is going on at Tech. It is call growing up. Watch Brandon Reed next year he is a winner.

How has it been!…I remember you, you are the guy that bashed Hewitt, but you were also the same guy on the Ohio St GT game blog complaining about the refs the whole game..But after the game, you started bashing Hewitt like it was his fault that GT lost the game, although you clearly seen and stated that Gt did not get any calls the whole game..you are a hypocrite. If you are a true GT fan, don’t do Coach Gregory like that….
But anyway, Ok i was off by 2, but still the other 2 left the “mighty ACC” as soon as they could, neither was winning ACC games anyway, Purnell could not get a call to save his life…No other Conference has had a coaching turnover like that ACC..You simply cannot win on the road in this conference…I have a quick ?..
How do feel about the Coach Gregory hiring..GT let Mark Bradley run Hewitt out of town, but ended up hiring a coach who was on the hot seat, 2 nccas in 8 years, 1 year with Purnell’s talent and he had the financial support and fan support that he needed!..Why did GT hire this guy?

U gotta be kidding me, another one leaving?? I knew it, typical when Hewitt leaves they all bail. He was the worse coach I have ever watched in my years alive watching GT basketball, except for the one lucky Final Four year, now he is gone, which ever true Tech alumni/fan I know was hoping he needed to be fired, got a new coach who we haven’t even seen coach yet but seems solid, and players just give up. Hewitt Fan, the constant complaining about refs is lame. There’s no conspiracy, never has been. Tech was not a Final Four team two years ago. This just in, Duke and UNC have Hall of Fame coaches and really good players who tend to stick around more than a year or two. Complaining about refs is for losers. All teams get bad calls. Deal with it.

I agree with some of the folks on here saying get as much of Hewitt out of the system as possible then start with a clean slate.
I’ve got no clue what Hewitt was teaching these kids, but I darn sure know (from looking at his W-L record) it wasn’t much.
Honestly I hope BO’s leaving is b/c of academics. If it’s bad attitude towards the new regime, or Hewitt having some sort of influence then no telling how many more bad seeds are still in the program.

Derrick “officials-ain’t-doing-him-any” Favors
10:18 pm February 18, 2010, by Carroll Rogers
First, a disclaimer. I’m not here to disparage ACC officiating, or to make any apologies for Derrick Favors. But…..I just…have…to…say….this: Doesn’t it seem like he’s got some kind of freshman hex going, where officials aren’t giving him the credit they might an upperclassmen in the post?

So I went to Gani Lawal today too, wondering if as a junior, he notices a difference in how fouls are called on him now vs. his freshman year.
That got a smile.
“With officials it’s like the weather, you never know,” Lawal said. “They may be good. They may be consistent. They may not be consistent. As far as earning respect for calls, I’ve been here three years; I still don’t feel I get the great calls. What I tell Derrick is the same thing I’ve been saying all year, just ‘You’ve got to play through it. That’s all you can do. If you get early foul trouble, when you get back in the game, try to dominate.’”

Favors is just an overrated freshman. In his case, I wouldn’t put it all on the zebras. But your post raises bigger issues. When will someone in the press actually stand up to the joke that is officiating in the ACC? Can any visiting team get a fair call in Cameron (not that it would have made a difference for Tech this visit)? Even though a hostile Coach K screams at the refs every game, can anyone recall him ever getting a technical? Sometimes watching Duke ACC home games is like watching WWE….you could publish the score in advance. It’s no accident that Duke was destroyed at Georgetown…there were no ACC officials to rig the results. Why do reporters just accept that this is just the way it is. Why not show photos/video of the bad calls and document the abuses? Press the ACC senior officials for answers. Do something about it and don’tt just laugh and hide behind “objectivity,” which is really code for laziness or “I’m afraid I’ll lose my press credentials if I rock the boat.” I don’t think anyone at the AJC/Raleigh paper or Wash. Post has the cojones to do their job. (Why? See previous sentence.) And that stinks more than Favors’ foul shooting.

Good post. Derrick’s not whining shows his class. So many CRAZY calls against him but none hurt worse than the 3 quick ones against Duke up there. The officials made sure Derrick, then Gani, would not play any factor in the game’s outcome. I lost any (if I ever had any) respect for ACC “officiating.” I would like have the “job” of the head of ACC officials. Talk about a do-nothing job..

Sarge1, I agree. The Duke game at Cameron comes to mind when I think of bad officiating. Duke really needed to win that game and the officials did everything in their power to negate any type of advantage Tech had in the post. Gani picks up two fouls in 33 seconds and Derrick is sitting with 3 fouls at the 12:00 minute mark. Enter Brad Sheehan. Game over! I also found it interesting that Jon Scheyer played 39 minutes and only picked up one foul. Typical BS when playing in Cameron.
The two most inconsistent officials in the ACC are Jamie Luckie and Karl Hess. Anytime we get one or both of those guys calling our game, we end up several guys fouling out or in foul trouble early and it seems we never have a questionable call go our way. ACC officiating has been horrible all year.

A foul is a foul, is a foul, is a foul and that is the way the game should be called. ACC teams say, they must play a few minutes at the start of the game to see how the Refs are going to call, A foul should be the same for a Freshman or a Senior. ACC Refs have more to do with who wins the game than the players. This is a shame.

FACT: Hewitt had to go.
After Hewitt got his big contract after the 2004 season, he basically “mailed it in.”
The GT program went into a noticeable decline right after that.
The ACC turned over EVERY B-Ball coach in the conference excpet Hewitt and Coach K.
The “overall” performance of the ACC in B-Ball has been in a downtrend for the past few years.
So, even though someone would think that a weaker-performing ACC in general would open th edoor for GT to emerge at or near th etop, Hewitt’s eam performance kept getting worse and worse.
Hewitt NEVER had a winning record in he ACC. IN the great 2004 season, GT went 8-8 in ACC play.
After attending almost every home B-Ball game over the past 5 years, it was BLATANTLY OBVIOUS
that the B-Ball program was in decline. The past 3 years displyed some of the most attrociuos
B-Ball fundamentals I have ever seen.
The fans had alreayd voted with their feet and wallets. Hewitt had to go.
D-Rad made the right choice to Fire Hewitt.
D-Rad also made the RIGHT CHOICE to hire Brian Gregory.

Hewitt Fan — Im not gonna fling insults at you, because I respect your right to a point of view. Its admirable that so many Hewitt recruits are making good money, and I wont argue that CPH had to fight the ACC league “politics”. But that is the nature of the job he took over. Certainly Cremins had the same fight in his hands, as did coaches at Wake Forest who have produced better results.
The end result is that his teams didnt get it done, and his recruits often had holes in their games that didnt get better and continually cost us games. Lesser players at lesser schools often seemed to play at a more complete level that ours. UGA teams out performed us on the court and played a better style of ball with lesser players. When that is the state of your program, a change has to be made. My biggest knock on CPH is that his teams seemed not to have the confident fire in their belly that is required at this level of competition. That comes from the coach’s attitude.
I really hope that in a less prominent conference, CPH does well and can enjoy coaching in a less “frying pan” atmosphere. I just didnt see things getting better for him here. Its no way to live.
I wont be surprised if the transition is bumpier for the new GT coach than it will be for PH at his new job. Hope you are wrong about another defection, but if you arent, theres not much we can do about it. The change had to be made. PH’s job here was not just to run players thru the program that could make good money after they left, it was to produce a winning program as well. He only got half the job done. Not good enough. Nuff said.

When Doug Roberson asked CG this ? I just shook my head,
AJC: Lots of coaches come to ACC and get a whiff of Tobacco Road officiating and realize they can’t win, what makes you think differently?
BG: I don’t have any opinion on that because I haven’t gone through it. You are talking about two programs whose teams are very, very good. Teams that are good get the benefit of the doubt. I think it has more to do with how good they are more than anything else.

But there is no arguing that Duke wins because they play great sound fundamental basketball. They hit FT’s, and they run a visible offense. And they make in game adjustments. And Coach K leads with a fire in his belly that is visible on the bench and infects his players.

I’m fairly confident that we’re going to absolutely suck this year and I’ll sit through all of it with a smile knowing that Paul Hewitt isn’t our coach any more.
Expect deserters when coaches switch, not a big deal. It’s easy to play for a coach that doesn’t demand accountability of his players or even take accountability for his own coaching. Oliver leaving just proves that he needed to be weeded out anyway.
Hewitt Fan is awesome – I’m actually impressed with the research efforts in defending his argument. The logic is flawed but I’d rather he use his lack of life to post here rather than go out and picket with the Westboro church or something. Duke gets calls, yep – no news there but not sure how it relates to Hewitt. And I never really read Mark Bradley but apparently his opinion was shared by everyone here who had eyeballs and watched GT, so not sure how he brainwashed me to think that Hewitt was a terrible coach – I knew that a long time ago.
So kudos to you Hewitt Fan for trying to convince the world that the sky is purple. (I’d get a 2nd opinion before trying to form thoughts on anything important with that brain though)

The problem with some Tech fans and students is they think that they are better than everyone else in the world. I speak from experience because I attended Tech and have been a fan since I was a young child. The attitudes that you see presented here do not represent all of the Tech population. This seems to be a fringe element here that cannot let the Paul Hewitt thing go. He has moved on, it is time we moved on as well. Some of you say he can’t coach but he got us farther than any other coach ever did. His last few years were not so great, I understand, but stop with the attacks on him. Hewitt had nothing but good things to say about the school when he left. Why do some of you think that he would try to get some of the players to leave? The man cares about his players and former players. He would want Brian Oliver to stay and get his degree. Stop with the hate and trying to figure out who Hewitt Fan is. He’s probably Karl McKray, Korey McKray’s dad, just let him talk. We always did and laughed when he was done.

Hewitt Fan is right about ACC refs. They do have an agenda and its about keeping the big conference money makers on top at the expense of the other teams. The big money by far is with Duke and UNC. GT benefits financially from this too when we get our cut on the ACC pie. This won’t change with a new coach. It would be great if we could afford to leave the ACC or at least go independent with basketball. I don’t believe the ACC has a “favorite” in football though – thank God.

Oliver had a beautiful stroke, could possibly have been one of the best 3 point shooters in the conference, but highly inconsistent. With Gregory’s focus on defense and running the floor, B.O. would have been out of his element, so maybe that was one of his reasons to go.
We will miss the numbers in 2011, but Gregory will rebuild this team. Don’t get all worked up if we lose to Duke and UNC next year. But wait 2 or 3 and we will give them a run.
At least we may come up with an inbounds play that works in 2011.

Oliver leaving, just another example of why Hewitt couldn’t win. He recruited prima donas that played with no heart. Oliver is just another example of me and not team.

@farewell bo…..Unless Tech still planning to hire another coach after their done paying Hewitt’s buyout, they surely won’t be competitive in 2 or 3 yrs.

this is just the start,When a program turns their back on a coach that the year before, made it to the ACC Championship game and won a NCAA game. One of his former teamates play for the GREAT ATLANTA CELTICS and it has been confirmed..All of Gt players hate the GT fan base.Thats why Shump left early also…Next time please don’t let Mark Bradley determine who should be head coach!
————————————————————–
Is this guy for real??? Hewitt’s last season with a winning record in the ACC was the 2003 – 2004 season…………….his ONLY season above 500 in the conference in his forgettable eleven seasons at Tech (72 – 104 overall). And only two NCAA appearances in the last six seasons. Those are the facts. And THAT is why the fan base is unexcited and no one comes to the games. Any respectable program without the fear of being labeled as racist would’ve fired him loooonnnnnng before he ran the program into the ground with ten of eleven losing seasons.

Cremins use to win with 6 or 7 players. Gregory can too.

“Next time please don’t let Mark Bradley determine who should be head coach!”
Actually, I think an 8-23 Kennesaw State team determined that.

“And only two NCAA appearances in the last six seasons. Those are the facts.”
If that makes you so mad, how do feel about your new coach?..CBG had been to the NCAA’s 2 times in 8 years, one year was with Oliver Purnell’s players in the ATLANTIC 10, and unlike GT fans, Dayton fans camed to the game and he had maximum support!..So basically he has a problem finding ball players, or he can’t coach!…Hewitt main problem was the refs, sure he had a couple of bad teams, last year was one of them, the year with Causey was another, but most years the guy just simply could not any calls in the ACC!

If it walks like a duck, it’s a duck and if it quacks like a duck well…………………this was a lame hire and everyone knows it, but this newspaper. (Same for the Tech Football) Neither program is going to be able to attract elite players because neither coaches are elite.

Calm down nerds, we now know that Oliver only left the team to follow his coach. You watch, he’ll end up at G. Mason.

Please punish me too, Hewitt haters.
Let’s see: he was working for us at 1.3 mil a year.
Now he gets, per his contract provisions, 1.7 mil a year from us plus whatever George Mason is paying him which is likely at least 500K.
So running Hewitt off actually obtained for him an approximately million dollar a year raise.
I’m channeling Hewitt as we speak and he wants me to tell you “thank you”.

Hewitt had to go. His results did not justify his salary. I just think he changed once he got his Golden Contract. Only person to blame for that is Dave Braine. GT will suffer in many ways because of that contract, financlially initially and not being able to get the big name coach until that burden has been eased.
What do I think of Gregory? I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt for 4-5 years, enough time to get past the Hewitt hangover and, hopefully show a positive trend. Was he the person I would have picked? Probably not, but every situation is different and the jury is still out.
Hewitt fan – I really do not know why you persist on justifying Hewitt staying? IF GT will never get “your” players and GT will never win because of the refs, why would we continue paying Hewitt’s ever increasing salary/buyout? It just doesn’t make any sense.
Hewitt was/is a nice, classy guy, but why should I pay a multiple for the same results?

Someone above said GT and Wake will battle for last place in the ACC.
It will be no battle. GT has already won last place. They will be lucky to win one or two ACC games.
