Stokan interested in Tech for ‘13 kickoff game
Chick-fil-A Bowl president Gary Stokan nearly landed Georgia Tech for the 2011 kickoff game. He hopes that he can make it work for the Yellow Jackets to play in 2013.
“We want to get Tech into the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game, particularly when we open the hall, which is ‘13, the first year the hall will be open,” Stokan said Monday, referring to the College Football Hall of Fame that is scheduled to open in downtown Atlanta in 2013.
Stokan said nothing was imminent, but was confident that the Jackets will play in the game, whether in 2013 or beyond. Alabama is already committed to play in 2013 in the Georgia Dome. If Tech agrees to play, it would be in a second game against a different opponent, Stokan said.
“I think (Tech coach) Paul (Johnson) agrees, and (Tech athletic director) Dan (Radakovich) and myself that we want to find a way to get Georgia Tech in, and they definitely want to play in the game,” he said.
Stokan has sought a place for both Tech and Georgia in the game, first played in 2008. His matchmaking of Boise State and Georgia for the kickoff game this September resulted from a failed matchup of Tech and Southern California. Stokan said that USC coach Lane Kiffin was interested, as were Johnson and Radakovich. However, talks died after USC AD Mike Garrett was fired and replaced by Pat Haden, leaving Stokan to scramble to put together the Georgia-Boise State game.

dawgfan, Tech fans admitted that they were unprepared and overmatched. One team came ready to play and wanted to win. The other was just happy to be there. You certainly won’t hear any excuses out of me. However, if I wanted an excuse, I just need to talk to any muttlover. Injuries, refs, coaching, blah blah blah. The same old thing every year. Regardless of the outcome, stop the whining. No one wants to hear it.

Difference is that DRad at Tech has attempted to get in the game but nobody wants to have to practice all summer on the Triple Option when they will not face it but once all year. Georgia on the other hand had to be begged to play in the game and would not until they found out it was Boise. We backed out on Oregon…were begged to play against Boise…with Richt as Coach we are more like poodles than Dawgs. Past time him and the AD were both shown the EXIT!!! And I did not even mention the top recruits leaving the state to Bama, Auburn, UF, FSU and even Clemson and South Carolina. Just tired of the rhetoric from him on excuses!!! Shoot am I the only one that watched the game with Colorado? Kentucky? Vandy (he is the only coach to have a top 20 team lose to Vandy in UGA history!!!

All kidding aside. I eat lunch with a Tech grad everyday. The downgrade in talent in Paul’s first three classes is alarming. Yes, there is a plum or two, but overall, It;s downgraded from Gailey. Yes, coaching is up, but going into year 4, most new hires would hopefully have a program on the up tick. Tech is not. Spin all you want to, call me an mutt, all the usual stuff you’re taught with your first rat hat. You know it true. The National press knows it’s true. Real Tech fans with a mind over heart knows it’s true.

Thanks for the comments, JB. I think we’ll take our chances this year.
Tech’s problems last year were the result (primarily) of learning a new system they were not equipped to run and bad luck (fumbles) on offense. I expect them to be much improved this year.
I would love to play Auburn or South Carolina in the Dome in 2013.

But basically, you can go look at the recruiting sites and compare Johnson’s classes to those of Gailey. Outside of the ONE class Gailey brought in in 2007, his classes were all worse than Johnson’s worst year. But people remember the one good year Gailey had.

The average ranking of Gailey’s six classes was 38th. The average of Johnson’s three classes is 38th. No kidding. Tech recruiting hasn’t gotten any worse under Johnson. We don’t have as much talent as UGA, Clemson, and a lot of other teams we play. When we are successful, its because of coaching. I think we have a good coach. Time will tell.

1971: Tech-GA series stands three games apart, 32-29-5 in UGA’s favor. A: We have tried a number of things over the years. We’re going to increase our advertising presence around the first of July, first of August, with some different types of things that we haven’t done in the past. We just completed a very extensive survey of 1,200 randomly surveyed customers. We got a very good response rate, achieved a 95-percent confidence level based on those responses.
There’s a lot of myth (about the fan base). Now we have data. So we’ll be able to go forward and attempt to find ways that we can influence buyers to come and attend Georgia Tech events and target a little bit — I don’t know that you ever hit the target 100 percent — but maybe have some more rationale and reason behind the type of advertising we do

Bobby Cox, a “real” college program has tradition and history that goes back before one player in the 1980’s. It usually also has a championship after that too. Check and…yep, check! Go Jackets! We may not beat you very often anymore, but when we pop into the national title spotlight we’ve capitalized on it more frequently than you. Guess that kinda says enough for me. Only a matter of time before another monster program rises back up on North Avenue. Estimated time to next title on an Athens team? 80 something years or so? I mean…this is irrelevant if “real” teams in your eyes just have really big followings at really big vanilla universities with simple crayola colors, common mascots, simplistic Union Army fight songs and not much more. If so, then yeah there’s like 30-40 “real” teams and Tech is just too one-of-a-kind to be among them I guess.

GT vs. Bama goes back a long way, I’m sure Coach Fish Fry would want to appease our older Fanbase by playing Bama to start the season.

Chi Town – Bama backed out on GA Tech, as did Ole Miss I might add, NOT GA Tech backing out on the Tide series. Perhaps Saben was concerned he would have to spend time preparing his defense to face the Jacket TO (a one-time a year event) and an offense that dives and his defenders ankles. Perhaps Saben preferred to fill out his schedule with teams he could breeze through.
Whatever his rationale, Saben is the one who backed out of the series against the Jackets, so, as I mentioned before, I find it hard to believe Bama will agree to play GA Tech in the Chick-fil-A Kick Off.

Georgia Tech and Alabama have agreed to reschedule their two-game football series that was going to be played in 2013 and 2014. The Yellow Jackets were going to play the Crimson Tide in Alabama in 2013 and play host to the Tide in 2014. Make-up dates haven’t been announced.
The Yellow Jackets are in the process of lining up opponents for the 2012, 2013 and 2014 seasons.

If you have to put a question mark on it then you should probably do more research. GT is a program that traditionally signs less then its full allotment and fills in with walkons and transfers. In 2005, the first year of probation we signed 19, only 1 less then 2007 which was Gaileys best class. In 2006 we signed 16. A relatively low number but still more then enough for a solid class. Having 12 scholarships taken away over two years doesn’t hurt us nearly as much as it would hurt the football factories.

The key to Paul Johnson’s future at Tech is simply this: who will replace QB Josh Nesbitt and B-back Anthony Allen? On defense, Georgia Tech has plenty of work left to do for Groh and his assistants. The Yellow Jackets were mediocre in 2010, and have just five returning starters, none with postseason honors on his resume. The D isn’t going to win many games for the program this year. The goal is to make sure it doesn’t lose any for it.

The NCAA placed Georgia Tech on two years’ probation Thursday for using 17 academically ineligible athletes in four sports, including 11 in football.
Gene Marsh, a law professor at Alabama who chaired the investigating committee, said Tech’s registrars and academic advisers were inadequately trained in NCAA regulations.
Marsh said the committee concluded the “institutional failure” to train the employees on NCAA rules “constitutes a non-debatable lack of institutional control.” WOW
Marsh said the committee found six student-athletes were allowed to count grades of D for satisfactory progress even though their majors required grades of C or better. Four were allowed to continue in athletics despite lacking the necessary percentage of degree requirements.

Really ask yourself this. Who other than Alabama fans would be watching a game between GT and Alabama after halftime? It would be crazy to match these two teams up. Alabama would man handle GT and have 3rd string in by the start of 3rd QT. And I thought the purpose of having the game at the dome was to help the economy in the ATL area. Having GT play wouldn’t draw near the number of fans in to stay in local hotels and to eat at local restaurants. Miami, FSU or someone of that nature playing Alabama would be great for the local economy.

I did not look for infractions, but if you believe Richt is running a pristine program you are kidding yourself. Hopefully he has gotten the kids attention as it pertains to doing stupid things that lead to the university’s embarassment, but when you recruit kids that would have never been allowed into UGA if not for thier football skills then you get what you ask for. As far as UGA doing well on the APR you have to take that with a grain of salt. Many schools, UGA included,place the players in majors that are a joke and assign up to four tutors for classes like basic english. I have even meet seniors that have not even declared a major or changed it twice to stay in the easier classes.
This is from a report on APR and SAT scores as it pertains to college athletics.
• Many schools routinely used a special admissions process to admit athletes who did not meet the normal entrance requirements. More than half of scholarship athletes at the University of Georgia, the University of Wisconsin, Clemson University, UCLA, Rutgers University, Texas A&M University and Louisiana State University were special admits.
“If the university says they’d help us meet team needs, that’s as important as finding an oboist for the orchestra,” said Nancy McDuff, the University of Georgia’s associate vice president for admissions and enrollment management.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.
Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.
It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.
Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.
Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

1. Hire a Coach that understands that he HAS to BEAT UGA more than 1 time in 10 years….
2. Fire any Coach that downplays the significance of the UGA football game….
Basically, if we are beating UGA on a regular basis and winning conference championships, Bobby Dodd will be full for every HOME game! At this point, we can drop all this marketing hotdogs for tickets horsecrap….and field a team that the state of Georgia can be proud…
