Tech baseball opens against Austin Peay

Despite having the necessary RPI, Georgia Tech didn’t receive one of the eight national seeds in the NCAA baseball tournament field announced on Monday. But the Yellow Jackets coach and players are still happy with their draw.

The Yellow Jackets (40-19), with a No. 8 RPI according to the website boydsworld.com, will open its regional against Austin Peay at 7 p.m. on Friday at Russ Chandler Stadium. Southern Miss, the regular-season winner of Conference USA, will take on Mississippi State at 3 p.m. in the other game. Tim Weiser, whose committee decided the tournament seeds, said Tech’s non-conference RPI and its ACC tournament loss to Florida State, with which it was competing for one of the national seeds, cost it a chance.

In an interview before Weiser’s, Tech coach Danny Hall pointed to Tech’s record in non-conference games (17-9) as a likely factor in the committee’s decision. He also pointed to the strength of the ACC, which like the SEC had seven teams selected, as another reason.

“They don’t want to stack four or five teams in the top eight unless it’s an absolute no-brainer, I’m sure of that,” said Hall, who has led Tech to 16 regional appearances in 18 years.

Rival Georgia (31-30), which squeaked into the NCAAs after a strong performance at the SEC tournament, must travel to Corvallis, Ore., where it will play Creighton in its first game. Oregon State, the region’s top seed, will host Arkansas-Little Rock. Despite usually trying to keep geographic ties when sorting regionals to reduce travel time for teams and fans, Weiser said the committee “must keep the integrity of the bidding and seeding process.” He said they felt putting Georgia in Oregon created more balance.

“I was a little surprised we’re going out there to Oregon State with so many ACC teams hosting, and they usually match SEC teams with them, but this is a great opportunity to go West and have some fun” Georgia coach Dave Perno said in a statement.

The ACC and SEC dominated the national seeds: Virginia (No.1), Florida (No. 2), North Carolina (No. 3), South Carolina (No. 4), Florida State (No. 5) and Vanderbilt (No. 6) were among the eight seeds. The 16 winners of the double-elimination regionals will advance to the best-of-three super regionals. Those winners advance to the College World Series, which begins June 18 in Omaha, Neb., at the TD Ameritrade Park.

Tech has a tough region. Austin Peay won the Ohio Valley Conference regular season and swept through its tournament. The Governors (33-22) are led on the mound by Jeremy Dobbs (9-2, 3.43 ERA) and Jack Snodgrass (3-6, 3.72). John Hogan (.317 batting average, 13 homers) leads them at the plate. The Govs have a .306 team batting average.

The Jackets are familiar with Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles (39-17) knocked Tech out of the Atlanta regional two years ago. The player most responsible for that elimination, B.A. Vollmuth, returns.  He slugged two home runs in the same inning against Tech to win the regional. He’s still hitting, with a .303 average and 12 homers this year.

Mississippi State (34-23) had a disappointing season by its lofty standards. The eight-time College World Series competitors finished second in the SEC West with a 14-16 conference record. The losers of Friday’s games will play at 3 p.m. Saturday and the winners of Friday’s games will play at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Georgia, which will be making 10th appearance in the NCAA’s and played one of the nation’s toughest-rated schedules, also has a difficult region. Creighton (44-14) won the Missouri Valley Conference’s regular-season and tournament titles. Making their ninth tournament appearance, the Bluejays are led by Trever Adams (.392, 14 homers) and Jonas Dufek (11-1, 2.17 ERA). Game times haven’t been announced for the Corvallis regional.

Georgia Southern also made the field. The Eagles will play at South Carolina.

The Bobby Cox of college baseball strikes again. He hasn’t learned that you don’t peak in April. He won’t teach his team how to bunt or manufacture a run. He always counts on homeruns to win and that is why Hall will always be a loser and a choker. DRad will give him a raise and extend his contract as usual though. I’m glad that I was finally smart enough not to get suckered into buying tickets this year. I feel sorry for those suckers going out in 100 degree heat tomorrow to watch us get eliminated early again.

Tim Weiser? He was Austin Peay’s AD 20 years ago. Guess he knew where the Govs could win.

He now umpires using the name Mike Gillis. Horrible officiating for both teams. Sadly, the loss was no surprise considering our performance over the last month. The bats have been silent for a while. Same post season rerun that we’re used to.

D. Hall recruits good players and over the season he turns them into less than they were. TECH needs an AD from TECH. Someone who looks at it as more than just a job. Someone who will hire complete coaches, not those quite so inadequate in some areas.

Knowing the recent history of the TECH AD’s, Hall can look forward to a nice raise after the hopes of a trip to Omaha are put to rest.

Good news. Danny Hall has called Charlie Sheen in to give the team a pep talk before the game tonight so that should turn things around.

We usually win the first game and choke later in the regionals. Maybe this will wake the team up. It’s pretty hard to dig out of a hole in the regionals though.

Same thing every year. We have the better team in a regional, only to choke. There is no way with the talent level that GT has year end and year out that there hasn’t been more trips to the CWS. Danny Hall needs to go and GO NOW!

MsBully…I’ll give you the first round. But, get one thing straight, GT choked against AP, we didn’t get beat. We beat USM and still have the best pitching staff in the region, including your so called mighty state mutts. You better hope GT doesn’t keep winning (provided you do) and we meet in the championship games. If so, we’ll send your mutts packing with their tail between their legs. So, better hope we don’t get there, if so you’ve had a bad day.

Another year, another flop by a Danny Hall squad. What a shock, but I’m sure it the fans are to blame if you ask Coach Hewi … I mean Hall. Good to know we can count on a few things in life: death, taxes, and the Jackets sucking once the weather turns hot.

I see a trend here. I believe Tech lost the regionals on their home field last year versus a third tier SEC team too.

GTClass, where are you now? Guess we don’ have to worry about State having a bad day now do we. So did you guys choke, or get beat in this game? Seems moral victories are the trend at Georgia Tech.

GT baseball couldn’t win the regionals if they were playing little league teams. They are more underachieving then UGA football.

I believe GT baseball is the most overrated athletic college team in the south.
Every year they are ranked in top 10 only to lose regional( for the third straight time at home) to a lower ranked team.
How do they get a regional, Miss. State had twice the fans as GT!
But do not worry they will be ranked in top 10 next year.

same stuff different year

June 5th, 2011

the reason Miss State had more fans than GT because the Tech fans know what is coming, four straight years of choking in the regionals, three at home. If you want the fans to come out, STOP CHOKING ON YOUR HOME FIELD……It is time for Hall to go and go NOW!!!! They are the most overrated baseball team in the nation every year…. once again thanks for the failure Coach Hall….

Too bad that “Coach” Hall doesn’t know that you use the mid week games to get your pitchers some experience. Instead, he lets a guy who pitches 10 innings all year start the biggest game of the year because of a hunch. What an idiot. He always stands in the coaches box with his arms folded looking cluelessly at the ground like Hewitt always did. He is the last of the Braineless era that needs to go. Stop the choking DRAD. .

GTclass, I wonder if you were even there tonight. Maybe the tech fans were waiting for Monday night, but they sure didn’t show up tonight. I would be embarrassed if MSU ever hosted a postseason event and were outnumbered in our own stadium. I would say it felt like Dudy Noble, but ive never been able to sit right behind home plate at Dudy Noble at a regional–I couldn’t believe tech fans let me walk right in.

However, the biggest blunder was wasting Buck Farmer against Austin Peay. You could have used your bullpen-by-committee to easily get by them. We MSU fans knew about Farmer, and breathed a huge sigh of relief when he went the distance in game one. There was no way you had enough pitchers to last two more games. Thanks!
