Georgia Tech’s Mott Hyde stole home in the top of the 15th inning for the game-winning run in a 6-5 victory over N.C. State Thursday in the ACC baseball tournament in Durham.
It was just the second time the Jackets have stolen home since the 1980s, according to Tech’s research department, but the first time they’ve won a game by doing so. They stole home once in the ’80s and again in the ’90s. No player stole home between the 1950s and ’70s.
The game lasted five hours, seven minutes and the number of innings set an ACC tournament record. It ended at 12:32 a.m.
More importantly, the Jackets are still playing.
Hyde reached on a double, and advanced to third on a groundout. Hyde stole home with a 2-1 count on Wolfpack reliever Jonathan Ogburn. Hyde slid under the tag. He had five stolen bases before Thursday’s game.
The Yellow Jackets’ victory was their 40th this season, making it the 22nd year that the team has reached the 40-win plateau.
Matthew Grimes (7-3) picked up his his seventh victory of the season.
UPDATE: Tech will play No. 3 seed Florida State at 9 a.m. Saturday (moved because of rain Friday). The Jackets need to defeat the Seminoles, and hope N.C. State defeats Clemson later Saturday, to advance to Sunday’s championship game.

If UGA gets in, GT will not beat them. I’m a GT fan and after watching this pathetic showing with 2-3 errors every game, pitiful hitting and poor baserunning, go ahead and chalk up an early exit on our home field next week. I would put my mortgage on it that GT doesn’t advance. We have played well to be in that #8 spot of the rpi and then when it matters the most to hang on to it… we stink it up and will let clemson get it it appears

Unreal, it’s the same story every year. Whether we have youth or an experienced team, we always suck in the post-season. You would think after all these years that Hall would realize that and at least try to do something about it. Apparently either he doesn’t see it, or he doesn’t have a clue what to change to make it different. SICKENING !!!

Damn, when we need them to hit grounders they hit long balls and pop out. Now, when we needed a long ball, even if it was an out, they hit a grounder and end a bases-loaded inning on a double-play. ARRGGGHHH!!!

I see where Tech’s basketball program is in trouble with the NCAA due to poor academics. I never thought things would go downhill that fast so soon after I left.
I always stressed academics as much as I did winning when I was there.

Look Dawgs will miss the NCAA baseball tournament as usual..I think they have a 500 record or a little under.. At least you won more than 10 games this year. Go Jackets….

The Dawgs have only won once in the last six baseball games against GT.. Yhey are in a weaker conference and no competition..I think we won one game by three touchdowns.

Heck, I bet my alma mater South Carolina State could take down our Jackets in post-season play. I just don’t get why the Jackets continually wet the bed every year after the regular season.

“supersize” IMPOSTER, I don’t understand why you won’t come up with an original name. I’ve been posting under this name for 4 years now; you only for the past 6 months. Get an identity of your own, man. I will say this though, I totally agree with your last post. Tech baseball folds every year during the post season. Does Danny Hall not have a clue? Trends like that reflect on something, and it’s past time he dealt with it. By the way, I attended and graduated from Tech.

just like I thought, my comment critical of the ajc was blocked again. I’ll try rewording it. Why hasn’t there been any new information posted on this site since Friday morning. I guarantee you something has been posted about the school in Athens. Why not Tech???

well, how about that? it worked. I guess the ajc no longer will allow me to refer to the rednecks in Athens as mutts, because that’s the only word I changed.
