Jackson could return to Tech football team

Chris Jackson will be re-instated to the Georgia Tech football team if he meets conditions over the summer set by coach Paul Johnson.

Jackson, who left the team last fall and was in considerable academic trouble, met with Johnson last week, according to Rex Robertson, a mentor to Jackson and his offensive coordinator at Henry County High.

“He had to make a lifestyle change and he did that over the last five months,” Robertson said.

Jackson is just shy of the 2.0 GPA he needs to be eligible and is taking summer classes to try to clear that mark, according to Robertson. Jackson was a hotly pursued recruit coming out of Henry County and Alabama, where he played as a true freshman in 2008. He transferred to Tech in 2009 but did not play in the 2010 season after tearing his hamstring and then getting dismissed in November. At the time, Johnson said Jackson was dismissed for a combination of things.

“He and I just didn’t see eye to eye,” Johnson said.

Jackson, who came to Tech as an A-back, would play wide receiver, his high school position. Jackson has been studying video cut-ups of routes provided to him by wide receivers coach Buzz Preston. Jackson would have two years of eligibility starting with the upcoming season.

“We’re grateful to Coach Johnson,” Robertson said.

No shame in having to mess up, go home, and get your head screwed back on straight. Happens to all of us at some time or another.

Hope he can contribute- at the least finish his free college education.

Most often high character people are people that had to go through a period where they were humbled, broken, and desperate. Hopefully, he is on his way to becoming that type of high character person. Best wishes to him that he figures out what he needs to become in order to succeed in school and on the football field.

Having been through the daily nightmare that Tech can be sometimes, I can totally understand not performing up to snuff. I wasn’t even an athlete (though I was in the marching band) and I got the boot for a semester because my grades were terrible. I learned from the experience, worked a crappy job for a semester and decided that it was time to get serious. I finished on the dean’s list for my last 3 semesters and the whole ordeal made me stronger.

Wow!

Just goes to show how poorly Coach Kung Fu Panda has recruited during his first 3.5 to 4 yrs. at GT.

Had he recruited better he wouldn’t have to put up with an SEC reject that then went on to screw up at GT with issues pertaining to his WORK ETHIC.

CPJ is so desperate for decent WR/A-Back talent that he’s getting slack on discipline.

I wonder what the holier-than-thou, smarmy, smug, geek-nerd-loser Fanbase of GT has to say about this move by CPJ?

It is amazing how Coach punch-em-in-the-mouth “adjusts” his discipline based on his returning talent, deep down inside EACH & EVERY GT FAN knows that this “2nd chance” would NOT take place if CPJ had another Bay-Bay on the Roster for 2011.

Kinda hard for the “Smug segment” of GT fans (not me of course) to wax poetic about how we are so much better than the “factories” when our HC looks at his depth chart and does the same exact things as the factory schools that GT fans CRITICIZE so much; and that includes taking an Academic RISK at DL that had trouble qualifying at Auburn & Tenn. St.

More and more CPJ is looking like a PE MAJOR from Western Carolina than a HC from a Service Academy.

People make mistakes, especially at Chris’s age and Georgia Tech as a school is very unforgiving. Everyone (including players at UGA) deserves a second chance. The real key is for a man to TAKE ACTION to change himself and remove personal defects. I hope that Chris does. I’m not real big on “third chances,” though.

So CPJ is being slack on discipline by kicking the guy off the team? This story has little to do with the GT football team and a lot to do with Jackson wanting to play for GT. He’s not on scholarship and not part of the team. GT is not recruiting him, but he does have the opportunity to walk on to the team just like any other student at GT if he is eligible.

Also, this isn’t a GT vs. UGA issue. Where did this kid come from? The oversigning king himself Nick Saban. Stories like this need to be more publicized to show current recruits that if you don’t make the cut in tryouts at Alabama you’re gone. How many lives has Saban ruined of recruits that probably needed some work to become good SEC talent but would have been fine in other BCS leagues?

Glad for the kid to get a second chance. If we are lucky, we learn sooner than later that our lives are about making good choices.

Tech can use another good receiver. I still don’t think we’ve seen the totality of CPJ’s offense. While not a true run and shoot offense, I think CPJ will definitely throw the ball more with a good passing QB and a few aggressive, “own the ball” receivers. That will only make teh running game stronger.

To the Tech receiver corps: Learn to own the ball when it’s thrown in your direction. Become another force on your team. Time to get fierce, guys. Make the plays.

By the way, WnE, AF didn’t stop Tech’s offense as much as Tech had nobody who could catch a punt. The offensive stats against AF were not bad, and, I might remind you, AF runs a very similar offense to Tech’s and knows HOW to defend it. In fact, Tech did a pretty good job of defending AF’s offense for the same reason. What lost that game for the Jackets was a total inability to catch punts. And I might remind you too, that for a so-called gimmicky offense, the mutts have yet to stop it; Tech’s 2 out of 3 losses to the mutts were because Tech had no defense at all.

I really had no idea that a 2.0 grade point average allowed for a scholarship in college. Where are the high school teachers and coaches when they are needed. Does this kid really have a legitimate chance to suceed when he is struggling to get to 2.0
I think the NFL needs to start thier own minor leagues for players, that can’t make it in college but are good atheletes. It just seems wrong that these folks use up money, and obviuosly are not a bit interested in anything but the NFL. Baseball has their own minor leagues and the NFL needs to get one also.
It is sad if kids like t5his are not even taught b asic courses in High School and then go to college, leave their junior year if they get that far, and have probably not gotten any more educated than if they never ecven attended a class. I would think with the courses being so tough at Tech. as is claimed, this kid would not even havce a chance in class.

Rocket, it’s not just the athletes who apparently aren’t prepared for college, and it’s also not just a matter of academic preparation; it is often a kind of emotional, or perhaps, cultural preparation for the change. I had a roommate while at Tech who was a couple of years older than me and had entered Tech, done miserably, and dropped out. When he dropped out, he decided to join the US Marines. When he finished his time in the Marines, he re-entered Tech as sophomore majoring in Physics. He pulled a 4.0 his first quarter back and went on not only to graduate with high honors but ultimately to earn a phD in Physics (plasma physics) from FSU. Sometimes it takes a little time off to get one’s head on. Let’s hope that Jackson has gotten his head on now and not only comes back but succeeds beyond expectations.

We didnt say we are held to higher standards by the NCAA. but a 2.0 at Tech is a hell of a lot harder than a 2.0 at any other college in GA at least. I would say that in all honesty, a 2.0 at GT is about a 3.7+ at uga. Its not impossible, but you really have to work at it. Dawglasville, that is true; it is not reasonable to compare liberal arts studies to engineering/science studies. For one thing, liberal arts courses are all too often graded on the subjective evaluation of the professor, whereas engineering/science courses are almost completely graded objectively on performance. It may, in fact, be harder to get a good grade in a subjectively graded course than in an objectively graded one. But that does not necessarily mean that the subjectively graded courses are more difficult or even require more study. Sometimes a subjectively graded course is a lost cause even before a student walks in the classroom door, based on the comparison of the student’s beliefs, world-view, etc. But with proper preparation, study, and performance, a GOOD and INTELLIGENT student can succeed in engineering/science courses. Too many times liberal arts students have to kiss the a** or liberal arts professors…..or sleep with them. Engineering/science students need merely to prepare and study.

But, he has won with defense, not offense. All us DAWGS complain about bobo ad nauseum but the facts are that the defense carried the day for us from 2001-2005 and the offense was just good enough.

We allowed 14 PPG from 2001-2005 and gave up 30 ONCE(2003 LSU SECCCG).

Now we allow 22 PPG and the offensive shortcomings are magnified.

Same as Tech. I have argued this with other Georgia folks but I trult believe that if you put CPJ in Athens right now with Grantham, we are championship caliber in no time flat.

With our schedule this year(no LSU,no Bama,no Ark), if Grantham can get us back to playing defense like Richt’s first 4 years, we can win the East because it is not a great division.

3 more stops on 3rd down per game compared to last year for UGA and GT and both teams could be really good. Could the blogs handle it??????????????

Didn’t UGA allow conference USA their 1st ever win over an SEC team in bowls? Talk about a complete joke! Let me explain the difference to you in your lose to UCF and our loss to AF simple so that even an idiot like you could follow along.

1) UGA was a 7.5 FAVORITE..
2) GT was a 2,5 point UNDERDOG…

Now which was favored again and i think we were picked to lose by the experts but what is your lame excuse for the meltdown? You couldn’t even score a freakin TD with a top 5 pick vs conference USA!!!! You are the biggest tool! You got owned yet again, go wipe your tears and go stand in traffic loser!

Wide receivers are irrevelant at GT. This is because we do not have a real QB who throws forward passes in CPJ`s TO offense. What we have to replace the QB is an extra running back who is designated to take the snap from center. He then runs the ball himself or hands off or pitches out to the A and B backs.

Good job and luck. Tech needs a couple of Wr’s who can catch and make plays, possession rec. types. If we can throw 15 to 30 times a game and complete 60% nobody will stop the Flex bone. It will be Fridge all over again, #1 in Country with a defense this time. I still would like to see the Wishbone with a passing attack…power sweeps, lead blockers, options, deep passes, screen passes, Qb draws and sweeps, etc..In the 70’s Wishbone teams could’nt throw the ball now they can.

gt4ever, it’s obvious that you have bought into the idea that getting a bunch of 4- and 5-star recruits define a coach’s ability to recruit. Can you tell me ANY TECH COACH who has consistently brought in highly-ranked recruiting classes? Gailey had one, and even it didn’t compare to those at other schools in the south; the rest of his recruiting classes were average to mediocre. Neither O’Leary nor Ross had recruiting classes that were better than those in Athens, although I guess they were all average to excellent ones. I doubt even Dodd had highly rated recruiting classes, but I have no idea how HS players were evaluated back in that time. As CMR has proved over and over the past 3 years, and Donan before him, it’s not the pre-college ratings of the recruits that matter in the long run; it’s the ability of the coaches to bring out the best in them. Dodd could do it. Ross and O’Leary (with Friedgen’s much respected help could do it. Gaily could NOT do it. I think from what I have seen of CPJ thus far, he can do it too. Maybe for whatever reason, he cannot get those whom you think would make him a good recruiter, but if he can bring out the best in what he gets, then I’m certainly happy with it. One bad year out of the first three isn’t so bad; even Dodd had a few less than stellar years before he struck gold, and both Ross’s and O’Leary’s first couple of years stunk. Was it because they recruited 4- and 5-star HS kids? NO!!! But it WAS because they recruited GOOD athletes who fit into their systems, and both those coaches made the best of it.

I am cautiously optimistic that Jackson can make it back and make a difference for Tech’s offense, which will need all the help it can get at WR. It is also evidence that CPJ is more reasonable and compassionate than he is sometimes portrayed to be by his detractors. Chris Jackson is welcome if he meets the Coach’s…and therefore Tech’s…conditions.

If someone makes a mistake, get kicked off the team, goes through some hard times, then decides that what he was doing was a huge mistake, starts doing the extra things to show that he has changed, works hard over a period of time, meets the goals set forth for them, then what is the problem with reinstating him on the team.

Does anyone actually think that Georgia Tech is so stupid that they will employ a head football coach who relegates his starting cube to running only? How long does anyone think Georgia Tech will allow such a denial of reality, pathological ego defense mechanism cube offense to be Tech’s offense. To deny the reality that a cube can pass also is pathological. Tech has Vad Lee coming in, and he’s known for his passing yardage out of a shotgun, as seen play after play on that YouTube vid. If CPJ does not switch to using shotguns, I think he should be let go and see if any team anywhere will believe in his running offense. His running offense does not win unless everything comes together, and this will not happen until he drops the wearing of black as part of the uniforms. Last year the loud appearing saddle oxford pants were how Tech played- they usually lost in them. And why? Well, primarily because “Black is out”. It happens to belong to Georgia as 50% of their colors, stupid. Additionally, Wake calls black and gold their colors, as does Vandy. No, I don’t see where black comes into the picture at Tech, whether used as a black GT on license plates, or for black tongues on whitewall shoes for the players last year. All of it is CPJ’s fault. He needs to hire an offensive coordinator who runs shotguns.

it’s amazing the attention athletes with academic problems receive; they are monitored and tutored daily to keep them eligible; they are given opportunities to regain a scholarship when they fail, very compassionate of CPJ.
On the flip side, what support does CPJ provide academically motivated “student athletes?” i have seen no evidence CPJ gives a rip nor provides any support for these guy’s.
on the other hand he loves having players, and coaches, around him that feel obligated because he helped them through some kind of trouble.

I do not follow the 4 and 5 star ratings, nor do I believe they amount to much when it’s all said and done… I do however, correlate how the coach recruits to how they play….. Bobby Ross, George O’leary and Chan Gaily all recruited better than this coach…. It is painfully obvious that highschool players are not interested in playing in this kind of a system…. Yes there are a few exceptions, but not very many…. This coach has NOT recruited any solid players, and all the recruits that Gaily recruited are GONE….. We will be lucky to finish 500 next year, and then what…? You people need to wake up!

Tech’s football team has the highest SAT scores of any public university. Period.
Until Tech starts offering some “academic pursuits” like Turfgrass Management, Tech will continue to face problems like this one with players that can’t handle the curriculum.
Tech’s football team will never compete with the upper levels of NCAA Div I until it can offer degrees in less challenging fields. Perhaps that was the plan all along so Georgia would have no in-state competition for the cream of the crop of in-state talent (no help, of course, if they go to Alabama, Florida, USCe, etc.)

Good to see you techies supporting a kid that is struggling. How about the same support for the UGA (or any school) guys that struggle. We all seem to forget there are many kids that will struggle either because of a wretched home life or grossly under performing schools and in many cases both. Should we kick them to the curb or try and give them a chance?

As far as GT needing WR’s my only question is why. CPJ would rather get smacked in the mouth than rely on the forward pass. GT will always have trouble recruiting top level WR’s – it’s the system.

Some of you just do not get what some GT fans mean when they say that academics hurt GT in recruiting for football. First GT DOES have higher requirments for entrance and only allows for about an 8% special admit rate compared to the 90% other schools allow. Second and what most of us are talking about is there is no escape once you are at GT. There is no easy major and there are no EASY classes like many schools offer to keep ones GPA up. A student athlete at GT has a much harder road than most and that hurts GT in a lot of ways and says something about the character of GTs student/athletes that are able to compete athletically and graduate, and yes UGA fans that harp on it GT does have athletes that never graduate.

RE: TomAce comment…hey, how’re you doin. I made up the word cube because cube=qb. At Tech in Finite Mathematics a cube is a die, and there are problems involving the roll of a die x amount of times to come up with certain values of black dots fron 1 to 6. Such a three dimensional object measurable by a formula to detremine volume is also found at mathworld.com within the combinatorics area. I simply use my course I took in poetry and the one in Finite Matematics to create a quantitative slang word for the qb at Tech. As for the shotgun, one needs only to look at Auburn and Oregon last year in the natl championship game to realize the shotgun is usually used as the formation of choice. For your information I received an “A” in football at Tech in Physical Training when they used to have these courses, and I was the cube of my team. You sure as Hell don’t have to use the word cube if it beyond your ability to understand as rhyming with qb which stands for quarterback. Do you understand that qb stands for quarterback? Do you understand that “black is out” at Tech for football uniform colors? All black or all white shoes and boots are ok, but a shoe or boot with both is not, and points to the need for “black is out” as decreed by the head of the alum assn in the “Tech Topics” news mag. The two toned is not conservative enough. And black knee socks are out.
