Georgia Tech’s basketball team will play Northwestern Nov. 29 in the 13th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge. It will be among the first game that the Yellow Jackets play at Philips Arena as their on-campus arena is renovated. The Jackets played the Wildcats last year in Evanston, Ill., with Northwestern winning 91-70. The game will have some familiarity for new Tech coach Brian Gregory. He was an assistant for Northwestern 1997-99 under Kevin O’Neill and also grew up in the Chicago area.
Tech is 4-7 in the challenge. Northwestern is 5-7.

Most of the match-ups look terrible, this one definitely included.

Should be a good early test for the Jackets. Tech had more athleticism than the Wildcats last year, but the inability to do anything inside turned the game into a jumpshot offense for Tech and we did not shoot well that night. Shurna deciding to forego the NBA draft will be a big plus for NU, but losing Juice Thompson, their point guard to graduation will put a lot of pressure on the Wildcats, particularly early in the season. Should tell us a lot about how the Brian Gregory project is going. Go Jackets!!!

Why match the same teams up two years in a row? I know it has to do with where the teams are projected to finish, but this is a let down to see this game when we could have drawn Indiana, Iowa, etc.

Why would you want to play Indiana or Iowa-they were the conference doormats last year? As it was NU finished seventh, although they had some injuries that affected their season.

Hey, if not for Wake, we were certainly “doormat” worthy ourselves. Nothing against NU, but that is a bad fan draw for Phillips. Just saying.

I’ll concede that point. Hopefully, there will still be enough excitement about the new coach to bring out the crowd. I think ESPN televises all of the games, so I look forward to seeing the progress.

This one is destined for ESPNU. Hopefully the students can get free tickets so the arena won’t be completly empty.

them getting northwestern twice in a row is a little puzzling. but it should be a good test, regardless of who it is. remember the wildcats thumped tech by 21 last year. regarding other opponents, though, is there another big ten team – besides maybe michigan state or ohio state – that would really be that much of a draw?

Ken, I believe they try to give everyone a home/away setup and when you look at the Big Ten teams travelling this year-Illinois, Michigan, Northwestern, Indiana, Penn State and Wisconsin, the most competitive matchup with Tech would be NU. I suppose Indiana and Penn State were possibilities, although based on last year Indiana was inferior to Tech and Penn State was probably a little better than Tech-they sat on the bubble until they lost early in the Big Ten tournament as I recall. Therefore, the logical choice-Northwestern.

Penn State was a lot better than Tech. They made the tourney and lost at the buzzer in the first round to Temple.

Ken, I am really enjoying your coverage of TECH sports but I will have to disagree with you on the attendence for this game. Had it been GaTech/Michigan or Indiana there would have been quite a few more “sidewalk” fans in the seats(if in fact there are still some left for this sport).

Thanks for the correction ormewood. gt4ever, I think it should be a good game. Tech should be improved and I think NU may struggle early.

ToeMeetsLeather:
Add Illinois to that mix. When they played UGA at the Gwinnett Arena, there were more Illinois fans there than UGA fans – it actually got at one point that the Illini fans drowned out the UGA band during a timeout.

It has been roughly 900 days or so since Tech has beaten UGA in football or basketball.

Big 10 basketball is very disciplined and well coached….. I hope your right ILjacket, but we have been anything but disciplined…. Hopefully the new coach will make a difference…

Thanks for checking in NadLicker from Watkinsville. I see there is not much going on for you at 1:30 in the afternoon. You could always watch some more videos of your “Pipe Dream” Team recruiting class.
