Tech heads into crucial baseball series

Greetings, all

A few baseball notes prior to the North Carolina-Georgia Tech series that begins Friday. Please note, if you plan on attending, that Friday’s game starts at 4 p.m. due to impending weather. (There’s a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms Friday night and a 40 percent chance Saturday, which could mean some scheduling logjams. Tech hosts the ACC softball tournament starting Friday and men’s and women’s first- and second-round NCAA tennis matches.)

1. The baseball team returns to ACC play with a home series against North Carolina. The Jackets will try again to make up ground on Coastal Division-leading Virginia. Tech is 18-6 in the ACC and Virginia, which plays Miami this weekend at home, is 20-4.

More importantly, though, Tech is trying to improve its chances for a national seed, which would enable the Jackets to host a regional and, should they advance, a super regional. Baseball America, which predicts two or possibly three ACC teams will receive one of the eight national seeds. A handy little chart with estimated RPI in the first column and Baseball America ranking in the next. Please feel free to print it out and take it with you as you go about your day.

Virginia      1     1

UNC           3     17

FSU           5     7

Clemson    8     20

GT              9     13

2. Coach Danny Hall has 299 ACC wins at Tech. If my math is correct, he can get to 300 this weekend. When he does, he’ll be just the fourth coach in ACC history to reach that milestone. Pretty impressive. Former Clemson coach Bill Wilhelm (378), Florida State coach Mike Martin (358) and Clemson’s Jack Leggett (300) are the three ahead of Hall, who has averaged 16.3 ACC wins per year in his 18 seasons at Tech.

Need to take at least two out of three this weekend.

Re #2, if my reading skills are correct, what you state would make Coach Hall the 4th coach in ACC history to reach that milestone.

Y’all are in a lot better shape than us. After losing to Mercer, UGA now must sweep UK, beat KSU to guarantee to be 2 game above .500 heading to SEC tournament. Lose any one of the 4 and UGA must win a game vs Vandy in the final series of the season.

How many wins does Jim Morris have? I would think with his work at Tech and now at Miami he would be closing in on 300.

According to his wiki, Morris is (was) 733-278-3. Presumably, there are 300 ACC wins in that number.

OK, Miami has only been a member of the ACC since 2005. My bad.

Byrd, you make it sound like Mercer is a BAD team. If you’ve never seen them play, you’re in for a rude awakening. They kids can hit, and hit hard, and their pitching is one of the best rotations in the lower conferences (Atlantic Sun Conference if I remember correctly). Its a long-shot, but don’t be surprised when you see them in a regional.

Luke, my stepson is in grad school there….but UGA is #20 & tech is #9!!!! Mercer won 3 of 4 from those 2….Surely they can’t recruit like upper tier SEC & ACC schools can???

Unfortunately, Hall coached teams peak in March. In May, they can’t run the bases or bunt. Tonight, a guy got picked off of first base with the bases loaded. That is just horrible coaching. Danny has the excuse of having a young team this year. Next year, he will have the excuse of having a young pitching staff. I guess Danny coached the softball team tonight because they choked in the firsrt round and probably cost themselves a shot of hosting a regional.

I love all Tech sports and their awesome baseball team often gets overlooked… Side note: Just found that new CoachWatcher website and it is legit! http://www.CoachWatcher.com

It was a bad night all around for GT sports except for mens tennis. If our pitching can hold up we can win the next two and sweep VT next week we may still get a national seed.

Big series win and great pitching performance by Buck Farmer today…first time all year UNC has been shut out. And Ken, thank you for the chart…maybe I am in the minority but why should the voters, who will readily admit to having internal prejudices for and against certain teams, be given credibility over the RPIs which only take into account results? According to Byrd’s RPIs, UNC was essentially tied with Florida and Virginia for the top RPI in the country and we just took 2 of 3 from them. I would think the ACC should get at least 2 national seeds and as many as 4.

So, where are the updates or story on how the series went? Or did the AJC forget to assign someone that task?
