I’m kinda thinkin’ the Opener on a Thursday night is meant to treat the Catamounts (CPJ is an alumnus) to the FBS atmosphere. We’re still going to slaughter them mercilessly, but they’ll get to play under the lights in a big city. I say why not? We all like night games, and the opener’s always fun anyway. See the new starters, open the taps on gameday traditions you’ve been starved for all summer…personally, I can’t wait to see if this “new attitude” team can run the schemes and give us a good season – exactly what a fun night opener versus a cupcake is meant to sell.
I’ll be there with the whole family – tailgate setup and all.

We are all the “dawg” fans talking smack?? What was the only game you guys had at home last year that wasn’t at noon? Thats right, Tech had to come to athens for you guys to have a game to tailgate for and trash you campus. This game is on thur. because it help ease traffic around atlanta with the chick fila kickoff game, and second its 900 degrees that time of year. I like the fact that its on thur. night. Go see a good tune-up on thur. night and come back and watch the pups give up 400 passing yards and 5 tds to Kellen Moore from the comfort of my own home.

The Sept 1 Thursday game is one of 15 or 20 opening night games. This appears to be a big opening weekend kick off for ESPN. Most will be on espn3. Tech will not be the showcase game on ESPN1. Most of the 9/1 games don’t seem to be very interesting match ups, but being part of the opening night festivities will be fun.

Wow guys…they announce a pretty exciting opener for Tech and all we can focus on is other schools? Do you people even like coming and tailgating at Tech? I guess the better question is, are any of you actually Tech fans? Seems like Dawg fans wrote all these posts and those few Tech fans who wrote anything so far have to be sure and mention a team that’s not Tech. I, for one, have no care for what any other team is doing. When it’s college football season (or the summer when there’s nothing to do but talk about college football) all I see is White and Gold. That’s the only team I care to follow, watch or talk about. A Thursday night opener will be awesome. I want to see these younger kids coming up, and this game makes it a fun way to do that. I’ll have to time to tailgate with the family too. Perfect!

Aaron, welcome out from under your rock – “Clean Old Fashioned Hate” is in Atlanta this season (as it is every other year, if you’re new to this). Also, Tech’s 6 win record last year (were you paying attention at all?) was due to injury of our starting QB and the development of a backup while the defense was learning a new scheme. Our previous seasons under CPJ were 9 and then 11 wins. Don’t put any serious money on that 7 win prediction of yours.

Can’t wait for the season. The odd number year schedules with homes games against Clemson, Va Tech, UNC, UGA, and this year add Maryland & Kansas, are hard to beat. (Don’t bring up the even year schedule.)

Old Blind Dawg, if that realignment were to occur, I would hope it would fix this horrible every-other-year home schedule Tech has now. I don’t see how this helps BC, but since it was written in the Boston news, I guess they think it does. I like the idea of having FSU on our schedule every year, since they are more-or-less a natural rival, definitely more so than Miami. It would keep our most natural rival (Clemson) on the schedule every year, and hopefully VT could be our permanent non-division opponent. Sounds pretty good to me, IF it were to happen.

Personally, I would think the best alignment would be a northern-atlantic division and a southern-atlantic division. Put Tech, FSU, Miami, Clemson, and two of the NC schools in the southern division, and all the rest in the northern division. Of course that would probably give VT an automatic to the ACC championship every year, since the northern division would be pretty weak. But it would make for a killer southern division, with rivalries not-unlike Tech’s rivals back when we were in the SEC. It would definitely help both attendance and recruiting.

What happened on the series that was signed with Bama?? I really enjoyed watching the one Gailey had with Auburn too!! No need to put a Kansas on the schedule when you can add a UT, Auburn, Bama etc & renew the old SEC rivalries…..also that would cut down on travel costs for the away part and get ya a sellout on the home game!!!! Plus that would be an attractive game for tv!!!! what ya think????

BYRDDAWG, there was never any clear answer as to why Tech POSTPONED the series with Bama. Kansas is on the schedule because Ole Miss DROPPED Tech from a previously arranged series. I always wanted Tech to get back in the SEC, and we would have if not for Dooley’s veto in the early 80s, so the more of our old rivals that we play, the better.

Actually, that last attempt to re-enter the SEC might have been in the late 70s, rather than the early 80s. I frankly don’t like any Thursday night game, but since attendance will probably be low for WC no matter when we play, Thursday night will at least avoid the competition and traffic problems caused by the Chic’ File’ Classic, as well as any other games in the area that weekend. It’s sort of a lose-lose situation for Tech; we had just better win the game and win big.

It was the Mississippi schools that were the most vocal about not letting Tech back in. If
i remember right had they been on board then everyone else would have been ok with it. I think it was Johnny Vaught that was the AD at Ole Miss at the time and really hated Tech. It tmay have been Tech beat them so much but not sure.
No real reason was ever given for Mississippi cancelling the seris but may have been Nutt chickened out as he knew he had no shot at stopping the Option. I think he was nuttts thinking he could get to the championship game and didn’t need a possible loss to an outside opponent.
Dooley quit playing Clemson supposedly because of some realienment in the SEC. But the real reason was at the time Clemson had a habit of beating them.
He had to fill the schedule with someone and had he been beating them like before Danny Ford the seris would still be in place. In the long run it was probably a bad decision as Clemson would have probably a lot more than they won.

Tony, that was mostly correct, except the Miss schools hated Tech because back in the 40s and 50s Dodd refused to play them on a regular basis. Since Dodd ruled the roost then, they considered it a slap in their faces, especially Vaught. Regardless of the opposition to Tech’s re-entry, if Dooley had supported it, along with the Bear, then Tech would now be in the SEC. So essentially, Dooley vetoed Tech’s re-entrance; I guess he didn’t want Georgia to have to live in Tech’s shadows again, which until Tech left the SEC, they had.

Mommy said I can use her computer again because I quit acting like a jackass all the time. I’m still an idiot, but there is one thing I know. The Jackets will kick the dawgs from one end of the field to the other. You guys will hang a half dollar on our pitiful defense.

Please, please respond. I’m 60 years old and have played Div. 1 football. I can never understand why you accept negativity towards college kids. I know it’s a trend now …. but is it right. Let me explain if the AJC doesn’t get it. There again I played in the early 70’s. and in a different time but ………… right is right. Isn’t a college or university about preparing a kid for the future? Whether it be from sports are not? Of course MOST kids will never play professional sports and if they do it’s only short lived. Colleges or Universities should be about educating kids who have done well in class and sports (if so desired). Although this is a sports blog you welcome or at least tolerate ( I’m trying to find the right words that explains 45 years of what many colleges have sold themselves out to be). Bloggers rag on students who want to play a sport and get a REAL degree. Sir or mam ….. this is so wrong and why you let ignorant posters just let wail on who see’s the bigger picture, is beyond me. Sure you can hold up the first amendment but what do you feel is what’s right …… were talking about 18-22 years old. Some should be in college and some shouldn’t. College is something you earn by going to class and studying hard for 12 years and maybe you’ll get accepted for your endeavors on the field and off. Again keep in mind that I played Div. football but also got a great education that I could depend on later. To accept people who only want a football degree is wrong !!!!!
Please please stop the negativity towards the opposing teams and only accept congratulations for your own team. Negativity will get you no where in life and only shows your ignorance. The AjC can control this if they desire. I still cherish the Furman Bisher, Jesse Outlar days of sports writing.
