Shumpert to stay in draft
Georgia Tech guard Iman Shumpert has decided to forego his final year of eligibility and stay in the NBA draft. Shumpert, a second-team All-ACC pick last season, will hire an agent and begin working out for NBA teams.
“I appreciate everything that Georgia Tech has done for me over my time here,” Shumpert said in a statement.
This past season, Shumpert became only the fourth player in ACC history to lead his team in scoring, rebounds, assists and steals. He was also selected to the ACC all-defensive team. Over his career, he scored in double figures 55 times out of 92 games.
At the time he decided to enter his name into the draft in late March, Shumpert said he was 50-50 and that he would likely return if he was projected as a second-round pick. That has largely turned out to be the evaluation. NBA scouting director Ryan Blake said last week that he projected Shumpert as either a second-round pick or undrafted and advised him to stay in school.
“I like him; he’s a good player,” Blake said. “I think he still has concerns.”
Shumpert has the support of new coach Brian Gregory, who said he could have had an “All-American-type season” if he chose to stay.
“After working with him the last month or so, I’m confident that his workouts will be very good and he has a successful NBA career in front of him,” Gregory said in a statement.
Shumpert has a Tuesday afternoon news conference planned at Tech.

But since he is pursuing his dream, don’t let your greedy emotions get in the way. Maybe your Hawks will draft him and he will still be playing in Phillips Arena anyway.

He should check with the two foorball players that came out early and wasn’t picked at all in the NFL draft. It’s ashame these pro teams are allowed to sign or draft a college athelete until they have graduated from college or after their senior year. The current process is hurting college sports.

Too bad. He won’t be a first rounder and it seemed that even his parents where for him coming back this season. Wonder if this opens up CBG going after Ware or another recruit to fill Shump’s scholly? I know that he has said that he wasn’t going to fill the one left open by Parks and would have given him 4 to work with next year in what many are considering a loaded class in the state. Would be nice to add another scorer for this year.

It sucks but he’s making the best decision for himself. With so many guaranteed lottery picks staying this year, he’ll have a better chance of getting drafted now than next year. All it takes is a great workout that could attract one GM or two. I wish him good luck in the draft. It was nice seeing him play at Tech.
It hurts losing the leading scorer/rebounder/assister of the team but this team will rebound better than many experts think. It will take some time to adjust but it still has Rice and Oliver who are capable of dropping 20+ and decent young core. Whatever happens, next year’s team will have a better record than last year’s.

Thankful for Shumpert’s three years of hard work and tough play on the Flats, but this is a big mistake. He’s got a lot of room to develop, and is a mid second rounder at best. Coulda been 1st team All ACC had he stayed for his senior year and developed under Gregory. You just would think that he would’ve learned from Crittenton’s mistake.

Will it hurt Tech next season? Sure.
But Tech has 5 guys who play the 1,2,3 spots and should be OK. They are Udofia,Morris,Oliver, Rice and Brandon Reed the transfer from Ark State. One other body would be wonderful.
On the front line there is Miller, Hicks, Holsey and the incoming Julian Royal to play the 4,5 spots.

It’s unfortunate, but understandable. Hewitt built a culture in which it was Georgia Tech was nothing more than a temporary unwanted stop enroute to something bigger. Every kid joining the team was molded by that culture and started looking elsewhere as soon as he scored or rebounded in double figures. Hopefully CBG builds a culture where the kids want to be at Georgia Tech and want an education.
It’s an interesting choic given the kids that gave up their scholarships to enter the NFL draft just went undrafted. I wish Shumpert well and hope he knows what he is doing and NOT listening to some knucklehea agent looking to make a buck regardless of where Shumpert lands.

He may go in the second round. He may go undrafted. Based on the NBA’s CBA it may be the best time for him to make a move. Oh well. At least GT has a new kid from Marietta coming in next year. Wellington Gibson is a 6-3, 205 total package with lots of skill. He’s going to turn out to be the best player us Techies have seen in a long time.

I think with some of the other elite players returning to school next year, that he could slip into the first round if you has some amazing workouts. He has definately improved each year at Tech. Without him, this last year would have been a total disaster. GOOD LUCK IMAN! You will be joining some other Tech Greats in the NBA.

I’m not sure what you doubters are smoking. Shumpert is a prototypical NBA guard in so many ways. He’s going to get drafted. Not only that, but I predict he ends up having a productive career. He’s making the right decision, and not least because the NBA collective bargaining agreement expires on June 30. The draft is June 23. Better to get into the league now, and be in a better (non-rookie) position next year when many of the newly agreed-upon provisions kick in. There are no guarantees, but the league agreement has to be a big consideration in making this decision.

I hope this is truly the end of the Hewitt era. Every player that left early under Hewitt, left atleast one year too early. Part greed, part ego and part get your rookie contract over so I can sign for some real money later. I know this is a problem at alot of other schools, but it happens to us once a year.
Shumpert has NBA talent, no doubt about it. He’ll struggle for 2 years, playing alot in the NDBL. He’s ready to contribute off the bench and be productive NBA player by year 3. He’ll be a combo guard and never quite master the PG position enough to be a pure point. Iman, Best of luck to you and don’t forget to donate $$$ back to Tech!

College bball players and GT ones in particular sure aren’t like they use to be, wanting to get a degree, playing a team sport, winning records at a college, no…. Now all they care about is knocking that first year of college ball out and heading for the pros. Still think they should put a rule in effect where players have to play three years then can be eligible to leave for NBA. Leaving after their first year is why college basketball is losing it’s excitement of past years.

While I appreciate everything that Iman did while at Tech, he is certainly not ready nor did he tell us the truth. He will not be a first rounder and he has been told that over and over. He claims that he was 50-50 but when everyone is telling you to STAY (scouts and parents included) and you don’t then you will be the next Crittenton. Accepting a little constructive feedback is the first sign of maturity and that is lacking here. Sad day for Iman, I would say I wish him the best but I just hope that others would learn from his mistake. Might as well be pushing a rope….

It’s hard to be All-ACC or All-American on a losing team, and Tech is projected to have a tough time next year.
Still a bad move, though. Can’t learn much sitting at the end of the bench playing only every third or fourth game for a minute or two.

Yeah, I would’ve liked for Shumpert to stay, but I really believe he’s making a mistake. I don’t know what the new CBA will bring, but I don’t think undrafted or even 2nd round players get that great a deal under the current one. I guess we’ll see in a month and a half how this decision pans out for him.

Most of the people on here in typical fashion haven’t thought through the actual decision-making process and have instead offered a bunch of knee-jerk sentiments about how he isn’t ready for the NBA. Come on folks, 95 percent of you would have made the same decision, and the five percent that wouldn’t are morons. Look at the considerations, how many guards are coming out this year compared to next, the NBA bargaining agreement and rookie salaries, the potential that the league may even shut down two or more teams, a new coach he doesn’t know or trust at this point, and then consider the fact that even should Shumpert come back Tech is going to be TERRIBLE next season, and it’s not that hard a decision. Think first, knee-jerk later.

His 3-point range may need some work, but his mid-range game and obviously his ability to gaurd bigger guards will be an advantage to who ever drafts him. I would love to see him in a hawks uniform.

Sorry to see this and wish Iman the best of luck, but he really needed to stay one more year. I think Coach Gregory would have made him more NBA ready and he could have had an ACC player of the year type season. He will most likely go undrafted and will take a while to develop before he can contribute in the NBA. He has a streaky jump shot, but his defense is solid as he led the ACC in steals last season. I wish him luck, like I wished Gani Lawal last year, but both players would have benefitted greatly from another year in school.
I think he is leaving because he realized the culture will be much different for GT BBALL next season. I believe he worked hard, but Hewitt knew he was the best player and gave him too many iso plays (more NBA style). Now Coach BG comes in and preaches more of a team game and more discipline on both ends of the floor. Iman doesn’t like it and he’s tired of school. He gets a tip that he will likely get drafted in the second round, and he’s gone. It kind of reminds me of the same situation with Jerrard Tarrant and Nick Claytor. Two guys who didn’t want to stay in school and got bad tips about draft info.

So you think he should stay in school and be an engineer? He is a good young man and he will make a good living playing BB. If he stays maybe he goes higher maybe not. If he does not make the league, he will make a lot of $$ in Europe or overseas. THis kid is a basketball pro, why stay longer. He is a smart guy and can come back to get his degree when he is ready. I wish he would stay, love watching him, but i don’t blame him for grabbing the doe. He is not Crit, who was one and really done, he played 3 years and i think eventually will be very successful as a BB. We will miss him big time!

Step 1 = Coach teaches fundamentals to create more well-rounded players.
Step 2 = More well-rounded players achieve more success by learning to play TOGETHER and by going deep into tournaments (Conference and NCAA).
Step 3 = going deeper into tournaments gets more attention from NBA scouts, analysts and media.
Step 4 = more attention from NBA scouts, analysts and media raises individual players’ NBA draft stock.
This is what GT needs and this is what the players need to be willing to work for.

How does Hewitt fan sleep at night? Does he really think he has a valid opinion? He has already decided that Brian Gregory will fail at Tech without even coaching a single game. We know Hewitt failed at Tech. There is a whole body of evidence for that. Let Gregory coach a few years then start to form an opinion.
For Iman, best of luck in the NBA. You gave us three good years and it has been a pleasure watching you. I don’t agree with your decision, but I will support you every time you strap on that basketball shoe. Luckily for you, with your great defense, there will be a spot for you in the NBA. Guys like Mario West and Damien Wilkins earned spots for their lockdown defense and effort every time they stepped on the court. You won’t be a first round pick and you will have to earn your spot. If you left for the NBA and no one was disappointed, then you have something to worry about. But you left after providing fans a lot of great moments and you have definitely earned your spot in the Georgia Tech record books.Obviously the sentiment is everyone wanted you back. I truly wish him well in the NBA, but I am shocked he has decided to leave now. He would have a MUCH better chance of success in the NBA if he returned for his senior season. He would more than likely prove he warrants a 1st round pick if he stayed at GT and played up to his potential. I assumed it was blatantly obvious that he would eventually decide to stay for his senior year and I fully expected him to flourish with the changes Coach Gregory is about to install into the GT program……..he would more than likely have been an All-American next season. Does he even realize he is essentially giving up any chance for a HUGE amount of gauranteed money (first round NBA pick type of money)???? Wow!

tek fans are the worst. hating all over this guy for trying to pursue his dream, I guess that is just how people who have never ever had any fun or friends respond to this sort of thing.
Seriously worst case, WORST CASE this guy plays pro ball in europe or canada or wherever, how is that worse than your soul killing cubicle job?
I say right on and watch this guy get picked up by the NBA

First of all, Shumpert owes tek “fans” absolutely nothing. In fact, if he wants to pursue the draft then it really isn’t any of your business in the first place.
Furthermore, commitment? character? Where does that leave that idiot coach who just left? Doesn’t the admin have any kind of responsibility to the players to provide legit coaching and instruction? I would have left too.
