Hewitt hired at George Mason

Even without a job, Paul Hewitt probably could have handled the bills.

Regardless, the former Georgia Tech basketball coach, fired after 11 seasons in March, is back in the game. George Mason, a prominent mid-major team, confirmed his hiring Saturday. He will be introduced at a news conference Monday.

“Every coach wants to get back, even if they say they don’t,” said Georgia State coach Ron Hunter, a good friend of Hewitt’s and now a conference rival in the Colonial Athletic Association. “He needs to get back because that’s who he is, that’s what he does and he’s really good at it.”

Hewitt was out of a job for 49 days, barely enough time to start collecting on his $7.2 million buyout, a sum Tech is still required to pay out despite Hewitt’s new job. He replaces Jim Larranaga, who left George Mason to coach at Miami (Fla.). Hewitt will take over a team that went 27-7 and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament. Barring transfers, four starters will return next season. George Mason is best known for its 2006 run to the Final Four.

“We’ve got to keep guys like Paul Hewitt in the business,” said Hunter. “I’m really, really happy for him and I think it is a very, very good position for him. I look forward to going against him, to be honest with you.”

Hewitt joins a highly competitive conference. Hewitt will recruit in-state against CAA rival and Final Four participant VCU as well as NCAA tournament participant Old Dominion. The CAA was ranked 10th in conference RPI this past season.

Hewitt was fired following the Yellow Jackets’ 13-18 season. It was Tech’s third losing season in the past four years. Hewitt led the Jackets to five NCAA appearances, including a run to the championship game in 2004, but managed one winning season in the ACC. He was replaced by Brian Gregory from Dayton.

Good luck to him. I am just glad he is gone, so Tech can try to regain a consistent tourney appearance.

I’m wondering if some of our fans will ever get it that it is disingenuous to call the guy who went the farthest in the Dance a terrible coach.
What does that make all the others who didn’t get that far?

I have often criticized Coach Hewitt’s coaching, but I simply don’t understand the personal hatred. I wish him well at George Mason.

I loved Bobby Cremins, even during the losing years. The NBA taking stud players right out of high school killed Bobby’s way of doing things.

Dont blame it on the coach, blame it on the players… Just plain sorry.. Only one player from GT getting playing time in the NBA – Jack.

People keep saying he was a “great recruiter,” but I wonder about that.

Now I’m not trying to pile on Hewitt, as many others are, as I actually defended Hewitt many times.

I just happen to be of the belief that coaches being “good recruiters” is kind of a myth. Now of course some are better at it that others, but I think the school itself does most of the recruiting.

Just one guy’s opinion…

He’s now coaching at a place where few care, no TV or Radio and no Roy Williams and Coach K to be compared to and no ACC expectations. Perfect place for him.

Washington Post is reporting that Hewitt’s buyout is “expected to shrink” since he’s re-employed.

Any idea where they are getting that?

looking into it, Jarvis. Nothing in Hewitt’s contract indicates anything like that.

I don’t think CPH was losing on purpose. He was just over his head. That doesn’t call for personal slams. Just firing.

jarvis – they’re not getting that info from Tech. He’ll get every penny owed him from Tech, I was told.
