Greetings-
Paul Johnson spoke on the ACC spring football teleconference Thursday. He provided a few insights into the team and the spring. Here ya go:
1. Charles Perkins has moved up to second on the depth chart at B-back behind Preston Lyons. Richard Watson, who had been the No. 2, has moved down. With those three and David Sims, Johnson called B-back probably the deepest position on the roster.
2. Johnson said quarterback Tevin Washington has “a significant edge” over Synjyn Days. Washington has done “a much better job” executing the offense and taking care of the ball.
Experience and ability to run the offense have given Tevin Washington a leg up on the quarterback job. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)
3. Johnson mentioned a few rising true sophomores or redshirt freshmen for improving this spring: Days, defensive backs Louis Young, Fred Holton and Isaiah Johnson and linebackers Quayshawn Nealy and Jeremiah Attaochu.
“We think they can be really good players,” he said.
4. He said incoming freshman Vad Lee will have a chance to compete at quarterback in the fall. He said the keys will be how quickly he can adjust to the speed of the college game and to the higher level of talent.
“We’re definitely excited about him,” he said.
5. No kickers have stood out. Said Johnson, “That thing is going to go all the way into the fall. … Nobody has stepped up and distinguished himself as moving away from the pack this spring.”

He was good at selling stuff that didn’t belong to him, though.

uga, why don’t you have NCs like GT??????? Watch ‘em start making up lies, now. I know it hurts, but at least you can brag about that big ole stadium and playing in the SEC. You have an annual top 5 signing class and still no NCs????? Maybe one day! Ahahaha!!!

Maybe you guys can sue the NCAA and make them give you a NC. Like when you tried to the year you couldn’t even win your half of the conference! HAHAHA!!!

Sims should be playing A-Back. He’d be just as effective as Anthony Allen in 2009. What a machine rounding the corner and running downhill towards the end zone!

Sims could also play wide receiver. We need someone who can catch the ball and David Sims is very good with his hands.

Come on “Old Gold” we have a chance to be better than that. Washington probably will be the QB, but atleast he’s building on some real game experience. We’re gonna run the ball and be sucessful at it………you can count on it……a little more mojo in the passing game and we’ll be that much better. The real key this year is the Defense and I believe it will be much better.

Vad Lee has the play book now and will compete for the job, make no mistake about that. He is the QB of the future and they will put him in a position to get as many reps as possible. I think he may just win the job. Don’t think he will know the playbook in game one, but we do start with three easy games, great way to develope a superiorly talented guy. Don’t put it past Johnson to start a freshman, he has done it in the past. Vad has to want it bad enough to work for it and he will start. If not then Tevin is our guy. he did do an ok job last year and by all accounts has improved greatly.

Agree with AMG. At this point, it really is all up to Vad Lee. How bad does he want it? Is he willing to learn the play book, inside and out? Is he willing to put in hours of practice on his footwork? Agree, CPJ has proven he has the guts to start a true freshman at QB, so the job is Vad’s if he comes out this August and shows his true talent!

This is Vad Lee’s high school football team highlight real. Check out his 2 runs. Unbelievable talent this kid is bringing to GT! Specifically, look at these two points in the film.

The kicking game is very important. Have we ever recuited a place kicker or punter? Seems like a no brainer to me.

Vad Lee also trucks a guy right around 2:33 in that video you posted – awesome! He’s seems like a tough kid – better be to run the option offense for Paul Johnson.

I’ve been to all the scrimmages since CPJ took over and a number of the daily practices. The first spring in his system for any QB is filled with fumbles. Nesbitt was awful in the 1st spring. Tevin wasn’t very good last spring either. Not enrolling early will keep Vad Lee in a redshirt. Days will get better at handling the snap and the mesh. Days is a much better scrambler than Teven and he’ll push for time.

Yeah, he threads the needle. That’s pretty crazy. Seems like Vad is the real deal. Hope he’s a quick learner…

One thing we know to be true. Whenever Vad finally gets play time (this year or next), he is going to give UGA fits! I love it!

Agreed. Vad for sure will help us swing the (Tech vs. UGA) pendulum back in the our direction for at least 4 years!
