Charlie Sheen takes BP with Georgia Tech’s baseball team

Charlie Sheen announced his arrival in Atlanta via Twitter: "I'm extremely honored that CNN has changed it's name to 'Charlie News Network'" (Special photo)

Charlie Sheen almost hit a home run in Atlanta on Thursday.

No, we’re not talking about his “Violent Torpedo of Truth” show scheduled for Thursday night.

#WINNING (Sheen) showed up to work out with Georgia Tech’s baseball team for nearly three hours on Thursday afternoon. It was arranged after ex-major leaguer Todd Zeile contacted Tech baseball coach Danny Hall.

“He was very engaging, about as nice you he could be,” Tech spokesman Dean Buchan said. “He interacted with our players and coaches. I think he had a good time in the batting cage. He came close to hitting one out. He hit about six right up to the wall, but couldn’t quite punch it over.”

Sheen wasn’t done after BP. He grabbed a mitt and took some ground balls and fly balls in the field.

Before leaving, Sheen gave some high fives, took pictures and chatted briefly with several Tech baseball players. We’re not sure yet what was said, but it had the players smiling and laughing.

Then Sheen, ever the showman, saw that around 100 people had gathered around the field to watch him. Sheen walked outside to the crowd, engaged in conversation, and took tons of pictures that will be showing up on Facebook at any minute.

Earlier in the day, Sheen announced his arrival in Atlanta on Twitter: “Just arrived in Atlanta! I’m extremely honored that CNN has changed it’s name to ‘Charlie News Network’ for the next 24 hours!! epic!”

Well, he is a winner and Tech will use that formula to win the College World Series!

Seriously though, Sheen was great in Major League and he actually was able to pitch over 80 mph (not easy) and seems to have some sports in his blood. I am amazed at his age and his drinking/smoking/drug? issues that he is in good enough shape to hit a few to the base of the wall or warning track. Thats pretty impressive considering most actors couldn’t even hit a ball out of 10 pitches.

Its not really embarassing as college baseball is small potatoes. Had it been football or basketball (which Sheen has not made a movie about) then it would make no sense. Kudos to Sheen though for being fun and spending time with players and students/onlookers alike. Not all stars would do that, whether balanced or unbalanced.

This goes well beyond embarassing for Ga Tech. As an alumni, baseball season ticket holder and a financial supporter of GT Baseball, this was totally irresponsible! Yes it may have been fun for the players and coaches but there comes a time to draw the line in the sand. This individual has been nothing short of ranging idoit with his personality disorders. For the Head Coach to allow such a theatrical stunt is well beyond my comprehension. As the Head Coach, Danny Hall has a responsibility to show leadership and common sense. In my opinion, he failed miserably on both counts! Some of you may see this a being overly harsh but I just do not understand Coach Hall’s irresponsibilty in this case. I will certainly reconsider my thoughts towards financial support of the baseball program.

Take it for what it is. A really crazy moment for everyone involved and a memory for the kids which brings a little of the spotlight to Tech. You don’t have to be a Charlie Sheen fan (do those exist?) to lighten up and see that this is not going to kill anyone. OD’ing might, but that’s not contagious!

Holy crap people. These kids are in college. Tell me what college kid wouldn’t love to meet Charlie Sheen at least once, just to say he/she did it? My gosh, Sheen came onto campus while he was in town and decided to go say whats up to the baseball team, because he is, in fact, a baseball fan (he did Major League for a reason). Can’t blame the kids for wanting to have a little fun during BP. And last time I checked, they were 8th in the country in batting average (.321), so having a little fun with finals around the corner allows the players not only to stay loose but have something to tell their kids one day.

Give it a rest. And to counter how I would feel if he was on UGA’s campus, I would feel the same way, especially with what has happened with the poor kid’s injuries and the lackluster season they have having. Just keep things light hearted guys. He’s not a criminal. Morally unsound? Sure. But its all fun and baseball is just a game. Don’t lose sight of that.

Finally, for the people who think Georgia Tech is “racist”, DeAndre Smelter was signed out of Tattnall Square and was actually drafted in the 14th round by the Twins. Chevez Clarke also signed with Georgia Tech, but got drafted Angels and went to the MLB. Roddy Jones was also supposed to be a two sport athlete, but decided to stay with football instead of baseball. Just to squash that talk.

I guess having Charlie Sheen hang around the baseball team is consistent with Danny Hall’s record of lack of control over his baseball team. Like all gifted artists, Sheen is troubled and self-destructive. He is also a wicked genius who refuses to play by the politically correct rules of a watered down, emasculated society. The reason he is the most famous man in the world right now is not because of his fall from grace (he was never that graceful). It is because he has been able to channel his demons into creating unique and expressive art. When we are all dead and buried, Sheen will be remembered as one of the five greatest comedic actors of all time.

Apparently Sheen wore a Falcons jersey onstage last night, and then replaced it with a Tech baseball jersey. According to the AJC, he got alot of boo’s from UGA fans in attendance. The report indicated he was confused by the reaction, unaware of the rivalry.

I guess Charlie, like the rest of the nation, is basically unaware of the existence of our special needs cousins to the northeast. Also interesting that there apparently were enough UGA fans in attendance to make a recognizable noise. I think it’s awesome! Coach Hall is a great coach and Tech’s baseball team is one of the best in the nation, and is the best in the state, every single year. Get ready for the season sweep again next Tuesday, leghumpers. You’re just jealous that he wasn’t at UGA.
Regardless, my best wishes to the UGA player who was hurt earlier this year and sincere hopes for a successful recovery. The rivalry is intense between fans and alumni, but these are kids who are talented playing a game that they love in exchange for a college education (regardless of how you view the quality of that education) in hopes of bettering their chances for the future. UGA has had a tough couple of years in regards to their players health and livelihood, as has Tech with the unfortunate overdose last year, please keep these kids in mind as actual people who have friends and family who care about them – enjoy the rivalry but respect the players.

Worm seriously we have had a few great black baseball players and D Hall is no racist. We just don’t get them during recruiting. John Daly is talking to the golf team today before the ACC Tourney. Smart or dumb move I could care less. I just hope he didn’t steal anything. Danny Hall needs to pull out every trick in the book to win some games and get to College World Series. Few coaches have ever so far short of expectations……he is another Mark Richt in many regards. I do realize this is an issue for UGA fans because the last team they actually had in Athens to compete for a title was the baseball team.

Baseball, is like Having Obama speak to the finance committee about responsible budgeting. I think the tech. BB program is solid enough, so they do not have to allow, a person of his character to be associated with them. Can’t think of how his being there can bring any positive light to any university’s progam. I think this may have left Tech. open to become the butt of some serious jokes. Seems sort of like filling out a job application for a peace officer and listing Osama Ben Laden as a character reference, LOL.

I’m sure you were all up in arms about that too, or was that not a problem for you?
