Gregory hires Postorino as second assistant

Basketball coach Brian Gregory has hired his second assistant coach, former Clemson assistant Josh Postorino. He was most recently the director of basketball operations at DePaul University in Chicago under Oliver Purnell.

Postorino played and coached at Dayton, Gregory’s previous employer. Postorino played at Dayton 1995-99 and was a staff member for three seasons starting in 2000. He left with Purnell when he was hired at Clemson in 2003, when Dayton hired Gregory to replace him, but then took an assistant coaching job at Marshall. He returned to Clemson and was on staff 2007-10.

Postorino joins Chad Dollar on Gregory’s staff. He still has a third assistant to hire.

I have no idea who the third assistant will be. however my guess is that it will not be Price. Price may not even want the job. He may be making more as an NBA shooting coach.

Sadly I don’t think price will be an assistant. He would have taken the head job (which I don’t believe he is qualified for) but he doesn’t just want to be a shooting assistant; At least not for the $ GT is willing to pay

Not Flashy, but a strong hire. Josh is well respected around the profession and will do well for Tech. Don’t be surprised if he isn’t here long before he gets a shot at a head job somewhere. Welcome to Tech Josh!

We don’t have to have former GT players as assistant coaches. I want the BEST! I don’t care who they are. I am noticing that we might want an assistant from the local area….someone who knows the recruiting landscape of the Georgia area.

A coach would be a fool to hire Price, ’cause all he would be doing is training his replacement in the next 3 years or so. No coach wants this assistant to be more loved than he is.

Coach Gregory will not hire a X-player for good reason..Would you hire someone that wants your job? He would have to watch his back all the time. Get over it, Its Gregory’s pick not ours. Just get it done, quickly.

Hewitt is being paid 1.7 mil not to coach. Gregory is being paid 1.3 mil. The three new assistants may be only getting very little it would seem. Surprised that we can even hire three.

I agree with bobo, get Yvonne back. No, not Yvonne Goolagong the Abbo tennis player fron Aussie land, Yvonne Josef, the Haitian black center for Tech who was strong under the basket in rebounds and hook shots, who wore a beard. Tech needs a strong center coach, and the Dollars will not be enuf to hire Salley…or will they if he’ll do Tech some Favors, and Yvonne is in Haiti helping rebuild?

God forbid this coach hire anyone who became a GT All American in basketball. Kenny Anderson would be the only one with the slighest shot since he graduated somewhere else.

Yeah, hire Clemson and DePaUL assistants. BIG WHOOPTY DO..

You know B Gregory, Bobby Cremins and great deal of players under him were the legends, not you pal.

It makes sense to me now why Mark Price’s daughter plays tennis at UNC instead of GT even though GT won the national championship in womens tennis just a few years ago. Price ought to tell the entire athletic department starting to go you know where.

you know I do not know if anyone heard the web conference a few days ago but Gregory said he believed there would be someone who played at GT also hired as an assistant in a few years. In other words, Gregory plans to hire one of his own who plays for him.

That is the biggest slap in the face to the Price, Scott, Anderson, Neal and the rest of them.

When I was a kid I learned tp pull for GT because of the bacwards ignorant way’s of UGA fans. I am beginning to wonder why I made that decision. I don’t know this assistant, well how many do you know. Hire Price’ why would he, 50 percent of you jerks against BG and hire the man you want as an assistant, the the first 19 win season let’s hang him. Grow up! This our coach, this is our team, he’s in charge and thank God ya’ll are not. I for one am behind our coach, OUR assistants and our team. I will try to focus on TEAM and not our rabid ignorant fans

X- Player and those who wanted the head job are out…you don’t hire someone that wants your job..wake up. You sound like a Hewitt fan but I didn’t hear you asking Hewitt to hire X-players.
Shut -up bitching and get behind our NEW COACH and support Our TEAM…..Go Jackets.

Just a suggestion but take a look at a guy named Damaine Powell the head coach at Cal St Domingez Hills . He is a tremendous young coach and a great teacher of DEFENSE and would be a great hire for the last asst coach spot.

for what it’s worth, of the 16 coaches at the final four — each head coach and his three assistants — two of them were coaching for their alma maters. obviously, you can find schools stocked with former players on staff (duke comes to mind), but i’d bet, like duke, those are players who played for that coach.

As several people pointed out, why hire someone who wanted your job? Who says Price even wants to be Gregory’s assistant? And I doubt Noodles would take an assistant job unless it was one of those coach-in-waiting deals, which Gregory is too young to do.

I was an avid supporter of hiring Neal, but they didn’t, they got Gregory. He doesn’t have any history with GT, so why the heck would he hire x-players he does not know? I don’t see the cries for Johnson to hire players from the 1990 team to be head coaches.

Dollar and Postorino seem to be very credible hires with a lot of experience coaching and recruiting GA. I give a thumbs up for both. And the comments about Warren from the Dayton newspaper was that he was an extremely hard worker on the court — something I would want in a Graduate Assistant. There’s a path that people take to be a major college head coach and assistant, and Mark Price really hasn’t chosen it. I get goose bumps when I think about Price’s big games at Tech, but I’m sure that doesn’t really make Gregory feel the need to hire him.

There are exceptions – those who did not take the long path of graduate assistant to assistant to head coach because they were players who had knowledge of the game – a lot point guards. For example: Scott Skiles 0, Doc Rivers 0, Steve Alford 0, Fred Hoiberg 0, Vinnie Del Negro 0, Pat Riley 0, Avery Johnson 0, Press Maravich 0, Frank McGuire 0, Lefty Driesell 0, Jim Valvano 0, Lenny Wilkens 1 yr. as a player coach, Jason Capel 1 year, Norm Sloan 1 year, Jeff Capel 2 years, Lorenzo Romar 2 years, Bobby Cremins 2 years. (My research could be wrong but most is accurate).

It is my understanding that Price would be happy to be an assistant coach at GT. He may not have wanted to work for Hewitt right out of 12 years in the NBA with a young family but I am 100% sure that he asked Hewitt for 2 assistant coaching job openings since and would have been glad to work for Neal or Gregory whoever got the new head job. GT did bring him in to interview as one of the finalist for the head job but that was their choice. Price would have been fine working for Neal. Neal can vouch for that! Gregory certainly can hire whoever he wants to hire. We will always have the memories of Price, Salley, Ferrell, Neal, Dalrymple, Anderson, Scott, Oliver, Marbury and all the others that put GT basketball on the map. I hope that we see GT basketball back there again soon! Good luck to the new staff!

Coach Gregory should and will hire any assistant coaches based on his assessment of their ability and suitability to his staff. It is ludicrous for fans (myself included) to clamor for one person or another based on popularity or perceived talent. Coach has made it clear that he wants former players to play a big role in the program, and I am sure he will find suitable roles for them whether it is a staff position, a consultant, or most likely, as mentors and volunteers to the program.
