Chad Dollar has joined Brian Gregory’s coaching staff at Georgia Tech.
Dollar played at Douglass High School, where his dad, Don, coached. Chad played three seasons at South Florida before transferring to Milligan.
He has spent the past 12 seasons as an assistant coach, including on NIT champion Wichita State this most recent season. He is Gregory’s first announced hire.
“The chance to join coach Gregory, one of the top coaches in the country, and to come back home is an unbelievable opportunity for me,” Dollar said in a statement. “I look forward to helping the Georgia Tech program get to the place where it needs to be in the ACC and the nation.”
His brother, Cameron, is the head coach at the University of Seattle and starred at UCLA.
Before going to Wichita State, Dollar spent three seasons as an assistant coach under John Brady at Arkansas State (2008-10) and at LSU (2007-08). Dollar coached the 2006-07 campaign at Murray State and spent four seasons (2002-06) as an assistant at Georgia Southern. He was also an associate head coach at Eastern Kentucky (2001-02) under Travis Ford and served two seasons (1999-2001) at Western Carolina.

The Dollar family are big in Georgia basketball. Nice hire.
The large number of Atlanta area players playing across the nation for other schools is a sign that there are players that both Gregory and Fox can keep at home. And the bright side is that many of them are playing at big time programs and staying the full 4 years. So they are successful in both basketball and academics.
“Does it say something about his staff at Dayton when he hasn’t hired any of them yet at GT?”
No not really. The former #1 assistant at Dayton was recommended by Gregory as his replacement. And that is all you would normally bring to a new job, your #1 guy.
Why would Kenny Anderson be a good hire. He has no experience as a teacher, only as a player. And the good coaches are good teachers, not necessarily former great players.

@ Inner City Atl youts-Wow are you really that slow? ATL inner city-(Really-besides Favors who else is ATL public schools putting out there as a major recruit..not many..it’s more about the burbs.. dummy..Norcross, Milton, Miller Grove, SWD, Columbia and etc…).
This hire was a great hire because of Chad’s ability to recruit (1st) and his ability to coach up players (2nd -ex.Jonas and Jarvis Hayes- former Dawgs). He will be able to go and recruit in the ATL and surrounding areas alone because of his connections. Chad is a student of the game, which he learned from his father. His dad put ATL basketball on the map from the 70s to the 90s. His guys were harworkers, well coached, and ended up graduating from college. This was passed on to Cam and Chad! Great hire for GA TECH!

Brian Gregory, did you check out Mark Price’s resume, of course not..he didn’t have time to be the water boy at the sisters of the poor university, he was too busy winning the 3 pt all star contest two yrs straight and having to sit for media photo ops between Larry Bird and Michael Jordan. Just fyi, Price’s father was an asst for the Phoenix Suns and taught Mark everything. That probably would not impress you either.

Lets get over this big name baloney. Lets go way back. Before Tech hired Cremins, the job was offered to an obscure coach at the Univ of Penn named Bob Weinauer who had just had one very good year. He promptly turned Tech down. Within 5 years Cremins was 10 times the name that Weinauer was . Its sounds like Dollar has an excellent pedigree. The fact that we fans know little about him is irrelevant. I’m behind our new coach all the way.

Two more assistant coaches and a “head of basketball operations” to go. Don’t give up on the hiring of a former Tech player as one of the assistants, such as a Mark Price, or someone with a first name of Clarence perhaps. Brian’s primary assistant may still join him in Atlanta but the reason why he didn’t immediately is because he was in consideration as his replacement at Dayton. The job just went to someone else, so now he is available, if he wants to stay with him here in Atlanta.

Mark Price probably walks around every day with more money in his front pocket than Tech would pay him to be an assistant for a year.

Kenny Anderson? What in the world could he coach? How to “blow” $50 million, how to father 7 out of wedlock children with 6 women, how to respond to paternity and child support lawsuits? Fantastic role model. You folks need to get your head out of your rear and recognize the responsibilities of today’s collegiate assistant coaches which does not include guys with backgrounds like Anderson. Sooner or later, probably later(after Nobama isd voted out) people will again realise that morals, postive role-modeling, and ethics will matter. The coaches should set examples of these traits. We expect our high school coaches to. Someone who spawns children like a pig or a fish without regard for their upbringing, or drive around campus drunk while hired as an assistant coach Should NOT be hires we would want at GT. No red pantygate at Tech…if you please.

actually Kenny Anderson would be a great hire, could sign some All Americans out of NY and he qualifies because HE DID NOT graduate from Ga Tech but rather another school. Not graduating from GT should qualify Kenny. Of course there is that matter of Anderson and the 1990 jumper that put GT ultimately in the final four while grad assistants Gregory and Izzo looking on from the bench at Michigan State. God forbid anyone who played and graduated from GT be hired.

paranoid?
April 10th, 2011
11:19 pm
Why is everyone so paranoid? Why do you assume the worst about people? Do you know that there actually are people in this world still who care about other people and want what is best for others, not just themselves? There are people out there who would actually try to help someone else have success. What about what is best for the players and who would be the best to help them develop and learn how to win games? People who get it – know that what goes around comes around and you can’t spend your life being paranoid that one of your coworkers wants your job. Every assistant coach wants to be a head coach but that doesn’t mean they will stab the boss in the back. There are still a few people out there who actual are loyal. You should surround yourself with the best staff you can get and if that means former GT players then that is who you should hire.

Chad was the non flashy, efficient, smart, 5′11 point guard on a high school team with future NBA and college championship experience. One might even remember his brother Cameron Dollar who came in after Tyus Edny at UCLA and had a few NCAA last minute shots as a non flashy efficient floor general. He is bringing this tradition of teaching that produced smart point guard play and all around sound basketball mechanics and skills that have allowed he and his brother to play and coach at a high level with success. I look forward to seeing this team in the next years.

Augmon will leave his assistant coaching job with the Denver Nuggets when the season is over and join Rice. Fans in Vegas are estatic over Augmon coming on board.

As Tech grad, I see hire as probably black coach since coached at Arkansas State and not Arkansas where white Tech grad Frank Broyles was coach. I see SW Atl Douglas hs similar to where Favors was from. Tech needs players to stay there and play for Tech, not leave and play for NBA. So do I see a continuation of black hs to NBA talent to recruit trend Hewitt established? Where does Twech come into the picture? Gregory better hire some white Tech player/grad next and from here on out to keep Tech a school and not springboard to NBA for blacks from Atl who have no plans to serve Tech if possible for more than one year. Favors was close to hs phenom King James in hs to NBA talent, what Tech does not want. Tech could also hire a dedicated black player who played for Tech all four years. How about black player Yvonne Josef since he was the only Tech player ever to wear beard while playing. He was good. Strong dude. On one of Cremin’s early teams. Tech wouldn’t have enuf Dollars to hire Salley.

“Where does Tech come into the picture?” is what I meant to convey. As Tech grad, never Twech for Tech. At least I got 3 Bs and 3 Cs in English at Tech during all courses taught in Freshman and Sophomore years. That was in ‘69 to ‘71 though. If I wrote a word like Twech instead of Tech on a blue book exam, the Prof would have flunked me.

Hire Kenny Anderson. Neither of you have connection to the New York City talent, Kenny does, as did Cremins. Kemba Walker was the second best player in NYC and did not start for UCONN until this year(his third). He would have been a starter day 1 at Tech. Kenny ran teams at point guard in the NBA for 12 years, can’t find a better resume than that. If you don’t, you are not serious about winning nor about connecting with the former players. Time to talk the talk and walk the walk
