Here’s a bit more about new Georgia Tech men’s basketball coach Brian Gregory, done in a topic-by-topic format. His answers are from yesterday’s press conference.
In some instances he was asked the same question in different ways, so I’ll list a few of his answers, which have all been paraphrased.
On what attracted him to the job:
- This is an elite university, one of the most elite institutions in the country. We compete in one of the most elite conferences in the country. It’s my job, to make sure that Georgia Tech becomes one of the elite programs in the country.
- I’m passionate about this job, I’m excited about this job. No one is going to work harder in terms of doing what’s necessary.
- Every bit of homework I did I got more fired up about it. Important building blocks, you keep checking it off: Tremendous academics, great players, tremendous league, a league with great integrity.
- On not having any ties to the South or ACC: There’s some feeling of being a little uncomfortable. But when you look at the product that you are selling and the things that I am passionate about and the things I believe in, it won’t be hard to sell this institution and program. When you feel something from the heart it’s kind of hard to fake it.
On Tech’s history and how it can help the future:
- I want to reconnect and re-engage our former players. We wouldn’t be here without those former players.We are going to get those guys back. Our players will know the rich tradition that this program has. The type of men that Georgia Tech produces.
- When it comes to getting former players involved, I get the feeling they are disconnected and not engaged. One of the guys I talked to was Steve Smith, who lives here. I coached him as a G.A. at Michigan State. He’s excited that I came. Relationships with coaches, we need to get back here.
On their new style of play and the work involved:
- Showing them the things we are going to do, the pace, the intensity. Their work ethic, dedication, commitment and sacrifice are going to set the tone.
- Fast pace, we play with great pace, we do push the ball on every possession, that doesn’t mean we are pivot pass, up and down, out-of-control basketball. It’s a fun way to play. The players will feel good about getting a shot for someone else. We will relentlessly pursue missed shots. Defense, high-pressure team that will try to force low-percentage shots. We defend, rebound, run and share the ball. Do it with unselfishness and do what’s best for the team.
- Our system and style will be alittle different. Their buy-in and trust in me, has to be a blind trust. We played some of these guys two years ago. They remember how hard we played, the defensive intentisty we pplayed with. That gives you some credibility. Everybody says they want to run and play at that pace. It’s hard to do while playing under control. Defensively we need to improve. We need to defend the 3-point shot better and defensively rebound better.
- The NCAA tournament is the goal. To get there we need to focus April, May, June, July and August. Take care of lifting today, take care of books today, get a good night’s rest so you can get a little bit better tomorrow. The difference in talent between teams is very slight. That difference in talent becomes less of factor in one 40 minute game. One NCAA game, for 40 minutes, it’s even less of a factor. Teams that have best chemistry and best leadership are the ones that advance.
Recruiting:
- I want to recruit the highest caliber player without comprising. They need to be successful in classroom.
- We have a situation in terms of recruiting where we have tremendous program to sell. It’s a situation where we have great tradition, great leadership, great conference. Great product to sell.
- On players leaving early: You want to give each and everyone of your kids the opportunity if they have the talent to move on the next level, it’s your responsibility to help them get here. It’s a culture you build within your program. It’s not what we might do, it’s what you can do. Guys need to have the option. If they can go, they can go. When they need to go, is when they get in trouble. Have to start that education process early, even during recruiting.
On re-building the fan base:
- In a way there’s a great opportunity next year in terms of reaching out and maybe getting more fans. For Georgia Tech, I need to make a great effort to make a greater impact in the community. To make myself more available in the community. This is our home. It’s more than just fans. This is our city, our fans, our university. It’s important I get out there and make sure our fans know the way we are going to play, how hard we are going to play. This is a hard- working town, with hard-working people who pay their hard-earned money and deserve to see a hard-working team. At the same time, you cant just sit back. You need to be engaged in the community and the city. I believe we have tremendous product to sell, best of the best. We need to get that message out there.
On what’s next:
Building his staff, will guys come from Dayton:
- There are four or five who I need to sit down with in terms of staffing. I want guys who can teach, guys who understand the prestige of the institution, guys who understand the work that needs to be done and are willing to put that work in.
- On the McCamish Pavilion: Look at that as a possible opportunity to touch some different fans, new fans, when we move into the new renovated arena. It’s going to fantastic. I’ve only seen the sketchings and so forth. I want a first-class effort from our guys in everything they do. Our job is to put them in a first-class environment. With the facility, with the academic center, with new arena it gives our guys the tools necessary.

Question #1 – “Coach your teams have historically played hardnosed defense and rebounded extremely well. But when looking at the facts your teams have also historically struggled at the offensive end of the floor and haven’t been at the top of the A-10 in shooting year in year out. How do you plan to improve Georgia Tech in this area?”
Question #2 – “Coach most Tech fans are very unfamiliar with your past program. However they have looked at the background and seen only two NCAA appearances in 8 seasons and a middle of the pack average yearly finish in the A-10. Can you give them some reassurance of the success at Georgia Tech when looking back at you previous records there?”
I could care less how hard the man works and how hard he makes the team work. I don’t care. I want to WIN…..PERIOD!!! All coaches work hard. Hewitt worked hard and put in the hours. Working hard doesn’t translate into success on the basketball court. If it did every coach would be successful. There is not one question or answer about winning and being successful. Why? If we win I could care less if the guy lives in his office or only shows up on campus on gameday. If his hard work is so valuable and great why didn’t it translate into success at Dayton (2 NCAAs and .500 in the A-10 is not success)?

Definition of university, compliments of Merriam Webster … an institution of higher learning providing facilities for teaching and research and authorized to grant academic degrees; specifically: one made up of an undergraduate division which confers bachelor’s degrees and a graduate division which comprises a graduate school and professional schools each of which may confer master’s degrees and doctorates.
While Tech’s official name may not include the word “university”, make no mistake about it, the school IS a university. To claim otherwise is to show ones ignorance.

I like what coach had to say. but frankly, have you ever heard a new coach’s intro press conference when he DIDN’T SAY….we’re gonna play aggressive defense…..we’re gonna go after the right kinda kids…..this is a great institution…..we’re gonna play unselfish…… I could have written the script myself. Anyway, I wish him and the program all the best….except that one game a year vs the state’s flagship athletic program.

Players feed off of a coach’s passion. I hope he has plenty. Hewitt had none. He needs to bring a former player in as an assistant. Neal would be a great choice.

I’m thrilled that he understands the need to get out in the community plus the extended community around the state. Hewitt came to Columbus, GA one time in his eleven years and was not prepared to answer any questions asked him during the Q & A period of our local Tech Club meeting. More power to CBG as he is definitely saying the right things and I feel very good about our prospects over the next several years with him in contol of our basketball program.

Let’s be honest. I don’t think there were any Tech fans who were honestly “excited” about this news. That being said, Tech had to get the best available guy who also had interest in coming to the Institute. The best thing about Brian Gregory is that he’s not Paul Hewitt. The guy averaged 21 wins per year at DAYTON, folks – not exactly a basketball hotbed. It’s not as though he was at Kentucky, Duke, or Carolina where the talent is a given. The one thing he’ll do is recruit quality student-athletes who will stay in the program for 3-4 years, giving GT the chance to be competitive each year. Every third or fourth year, we may challenge for the ACC/national title. Stop whining and give the guy a chance.

if he can coach at all he will be btter than Hewitt. First he understand stands that playing needs to be fun for the players, they need to play with passion.
If he can teach them to pass and play defense they will win. We have had the talent but have not developed that talent.

BG’s big problem @ UD was his lack of 1/2 court offense. BG won games he should have lost, lost games he should have won, but very seldom won games he had to win. T-Bone do your homework before you shoot off your mouth – Dayton is a Hotbed for Hoops – they have the 22nd highest average home attendance in the country; the play-in games are held in Dayton and this year we had a Women’s Regional. BG runs a very controlled game with very few players getting more than 25-30 minutes per game. I think at best BG is an average coach.

Let me add that in BG’s 8 years at Dayton – he’s been squeaky clean and did a lot in and for the community – you might be getting an average coach but a class act from an individual standpoint.

1. with a salary .3 million less than our last stinkerooo of a coach. we gain a million back that we payed that stinkerooo for doing nothing.
2. it is refreshing that we will no longer be semi pro team for the nba. it will be refreshing to hear a coach say that he is looking for the best combination of student athlete and basketball player as opposed to saying…… ‘i recruit long tall athletic and black ‘. it is time to remove the color requirement from our recruiting philosophy and just recruit players. i think our new coach will do just that!

OH Well, It is baseaball season isn’t it. Thanks Drad for nothing !!! I hope CPJ can get the guys excited this year !!! Congrats to the womens B-Ball team this year !!! I am not even gonna look at anymore GT basketball blogs. We sign Hewitt to a big contract when we didn’t have to, so know we are stuck with this guy. I still love the other GT teams and I am a huge college B-ball fan but I am threw watching mediocore GT B-ball teams !!! Sorry Mr. Price and Mr. Neal it broke my heart too. I guess will just have to talk about how good some of the 80’s and 90’s teams were. and I am not some fair weather fan. Been a YELLOW JACKET fan for a long time. Born and raised at Grant field !!!

new coach hit on one of the key points about college b-ball…the difference in talent from one team to the next is very slight (that’s true in football, too). hard work, discipline, conditioning and fundamentals are what separate the average teams from the very good ones.

The assistants he hires will be key. Like any coach, he has strengths and weaknesses. It appears looking at his teams from Dayton that offense may be a weakness. If so, he needs to hire his assistants accordingly. In my opinion, that was Hewitt’s downfall. He didn’t hire assistants to shore up his weaknesses. Hopefully Gregory will.

Way to welcome the new coach guys. I’ll admit I wasn’t thrilled with the new hire either, but the more I read and hear the more I like this guy. Give CBG a chance. As of right now hes undefeated. If he doesn’t perform then we can criticize away, but let’s at least give him a chance to show us what he can do. If he can win next season, even a little bit, it will be a huge improvement. Essentially all of our games will be road games, and we all know how CPH did on the road. After next season, no excuses, I expect wins, just like everybody else. But seriously, we can be welcoming to the new coach, hes a class act. Let’s show him how great the Tech fanbase can be!

The proof is in the pudding. When BG wins, there will be little criticism and complaining. When Auburn hired Gene Chizik back in December 2008, there were many howling that they had hired somebody with a 5-19 career head-coaching record. Winning Auburn’s first national championship since 1957 has proven them wrong.

Gentlemen, there is really no need for us to be rude to each other. After all we are all brothers and sisters who are passionate about our alma mater. We are all entitled to our opinions, but I feel we should set a positive tone regarding our new coach. Unless some of you are insiders, we are not aware of the full details of the job search, who was contacted, what the parameters of the job were, etc. I think DRad has done well for us in the past and I don’t have any information to lead me to believe this assignment was handled any differently. Whatever our personal preferences were, let’s welcome Coach Gregory and wish him all the best success.

Respect for an education, now that is refreshing. Hewitt use to defend the one and done with an education does not mean as much to a Afro American as it does the rest of us. Yea it does, only he didn’t know it. When education stops being an Uncle Tom thing, and that attitude stops beingencouraged by a differenct kind of uncle we all will be better off.

We don’t want any of his assistant coaches to be promoted at UD. It would be more of the same…the weave, the weave, the weave and wholesale substitutions (sometimes 5 at a time) regardless of performance. Subs often go in based on what the time clock says…very frustrating as a fan…and I’m sure for the players as well.
We need some new blood in here…

As usual, mostly all opinions, not many facts. Look at the man’s track record (wins/losses, attention to academics, involvement in the community, work ethic). Those are facts. He is saying the right things. Clearly, he gets it. And from the many third-party accounts of his work ethic and commitment, I am excited about next season already. We should see an immediate difference on the court, which may not translate into instant wins but should give us a glimpse of better things to come. I am so old I was a student the year the AMC (Thrillerdome) opened. I enjoy GT basketball win or lose when I see the best effort being put out during the game. We have missed that for several years, and I hope Coach Gregory can get that back.
No one has mentioned his long association with Tom Izzo at Mich. State. If he teaches his players to give their all like Izzo does, the wins will follow. I personally wish him the best and welcome him to our Institute.

jimbob: I am probably as old as you are. AMC opened in 1956. I remember seeing Terry Randall and “Cowboy” Buddy Blemker “shooting from the hip” as Al Ciraldo called it.
Also, remember Adolph Rupp in his baggy brown suit bringing his great Kentucky teams in and getting beat by Whack Hyder several times.

You are getting a quality gentleman who recruits very well and gets quality young men. He did this at Dayton and should certainly be able to do the same for you. He brought back and reconnected with former players here. He was very involved with the community. He has integrity and will represent your institute impeccably. @spiderman – No doubt that Braine’s legacy is a department in the financial hole. We’ve been paying Gailey since he left and now we’ll have Hewitt on the payroll for not coaching for years. However, if that was the whole story, do you not think that they could have gotten Neal and/or Price for a lower pricetag?
One thing that Drad and his bosses have shown is that they have no great respect for ex-Techsters out there trying to advance their careers.

Dayton beat Tech 63-59 on Nov. 19, 2009 and beat North Carolina 79-68 on April 1, 2010 for the NIT Tournament title. The negativism about Gregory from some of the posts is unwaranted and inappropriate.

@ACC Fan – I can’t speak for all Tech fans/alum, but my “negativism” is not necessarily aimed at Coach Gregory or Dayton. My reaction has, to a great extent, been based on my perception that the Tech basketball program needed a massive shot of energy and enthusiasm to get the casual Atlanta/Georgia fans to reengage and attend. Based on the mixed reviews that Coach Gregory has been getting from Dayton fans and the fact that Dayton hasn’t made the field of 64 (68) lately, it just doesn’t seem that this hire is going to accomplish much (at least not right away).

I think the problem BG had at UD was that he couldn’t get the players to play his system. It’s easier for a school in a major conference to get athletes with basketball skills – UD tended to be athletic but not so much skilled. They were at their best running – getting the defensive board starting a break and pushing however they struggled more in the half court. This years team fell apart because of serious chemistry problems caused by a highly rated hometown recruit who as a point guard decided he should be given more scoring opportunities (even though he was 3rd on the team in shots attempted, 15% 3FG, and 60% FT) – BG refused to change the offense to make him the star so he announced he transfer
He excelled against big schools because they believed they were more athletic when they should have tried to slow UD down– I think his system will work well at Georgia Tech as he will have better players who can shoot an open jump shot -you have to keep in mind while at UD BG beat Pitt (ranked #6 at the time), Louisville (2x), Marquette, UNC, Illinois, Cincinnati, Xavier (several wins in conference including a 25 point beating of their 2010 sweet 16 team), Georgia Tech, Auburn, and Ole Miss (2x)
