12:09 pm March 25, 2011, by Doug Roberson
Though he said earlier this week that he hadn’t been contacted by Georgia Tech, a few outlets are reporting that Doug Wojcik interviewed for the Yellow Jackets men’s basketball job on Thursday.
Georgia Tech is declining to comment on the search.
Wojcik is 87-54 at Tulsa, turning them from a nine-win team into a 19-win team this season. In six seasons, he has yet to lead the Golden Hurricanes to the NCAA tournament. They have twice appeared in the NIT, reaching the second round in 2009. They won the CBI tournament in 2008.
An official in Tulsa’s athletics department said earlier this week that they don’t comment on the job status of their coaches, unless there’s a change.
Wojcik, 46, played point guard at Navy with David Robinson. Before taking the Tulsa job, he was an assistant coach at Notre Dame, North Carolina and Michigan State.
He is 58-39 in Conference USA play at Tulsa. Because it is a private school, Tulsa hasn’t made Wojcik’s salary public.

Interesting. Tulsa doesn’t figure to be much like Tech, but a turnaround-maker is a good coach to look at I guess.

I grew up watching Wojcik play at Navy and seeing him coach at the Navy basketball camp. He’s an officer and a gentleman, with great playing skills, game knowledge, and leadership abilities. He knows how to command–he was trained for that since becoming a midshipman. Excited to hear about this possibility!

Yeah hey, let’s make the same mistake Wake Forest made and hire someone who hasn’t done anything for his program or taken them anywhere. the 9 wins to 19 wins (13 losses btw) is a result of an easy schedule. They lost to anyone that was half decent they played, bring back Hewitt if this is what we’re shooting for…

Unless DRAD hires Alfred E Neuman, I plan to renew.
Those of you who will whine if your pick is not chosen, cry me a river.
DRAD is our best AD in decades.
Ten times better than Braine.

Maybe he knows more than most of us including me.

We need to remember that our next coach will essentially have one year to impress the fans. If Wojcik comes in and wins 20 and takes us to the tourney, then people will buy tickets for the new arena.

My worry is we have a situation like MLB has with free agents.
Oliver Perez will get 12 million to do nothing this year because of that insane biding war they have every year.
How could the Mets GM be so stupid?
Well at the time, he probably looked worth signing but maybe not for 12 a year.
Whoever we get – whether the hot guy or not – I want to encourage all fans to give him a chance.

I’d rather have Hewitt back. This guy is not going to take Tech to the next level or any level. He’ll recruit middle of the pack, but only because it’s Tech, not due to his skill, and he’ll play .500 ball. He’s had no success. 20 wins in C-USA is nothing. We’re talking ACC. I will not buy a ticket to see an average team with an average, or I think below average coach. How about Dip Metress at ASU? All he’s done is taken a doormat and won over 100 games in 4 years. And he knows Georgia. Just a thought!!

If Drad doesn’t get this hire right, then he is going to have to take some heat (i’m not saying he will be fired because he won’t because he is one of the best AD’s around)
GT needs someone that is going to pump some life into our program and who is going to recruit his tail off in this talent rich state – I don’t think this guy from Tulsa is going to do either of those things

His pedigree speaks volumes. He was instrumental in bringing May, Felton, and McCants to UNC and played a vital role on some very good Michigan State teams, including one Final Four appearance. Tulsa not making the NCAAs has as much to do with a filthy, but talented, Memphis bunch. Not to mention that he was a consistent 20 game winner in a much stronger conference than Nolan Richardson, Bill Self, or Tubby Smith ever faced with Tulsa.
Is it the ideal hire? Probably not, but Brad Stevens is not walking through that door. If Mooney is looking for a payday, there are obviously schools that can, and will, pay more for him.
Bottom line, Wojcik is high character, has experience in the ACC, recruits well, has had success at a school with high academic standards, and won’t break the bank.

If they all know so much and are so smart, why isn’t there a unanimous agreement as to the next coach? Could it be that almost all of the definitive remarks as to who,FOR SURE,would be greatest coach in the country are just ignorant BS? To collegeballfan, please explain how tech has the same record as this guy…he’s won 20 games in 4 of his 6 years coaching. We’ve has as many 20 win seasons as that under Hewitt – in ELEVEN YEARS and we haven’t even sniffed a conference title. Wojcik has had a couple great shots at conference titles, but just couldn’t compete with the deep pockets (and probably shady recruiting as hoophead eluded to) at Memphis under Calipari. It also looks like the NCAA wouldn’t consider any teams other than Memphis for years in C-USA after Tulsa had those bad years before Wojcik. This guy kind of intrigues me to be honest with you. Probably fits our budget as well.

Please stop all of this talk about Price and/or Neal. They are legends here and to bring either one of them in to be a head coach without any head coaching experience (except mighty Class A Whitfield Academy) would not be fair to anyone. They would probably fail and everyone would forget all about all the great things they did for us in the past. Those idiots down the road figured that out the hard way with Ray Goof. I’m willing to give this guy a shot. Good pedigree as an assistant and HC. I was worried that he had less than 100 wins in 6 years so I looked it up and he as 123. As always, nice reporting AJC. It took me 2 seconds to find that out.

Hiring the Anti-Hewitt has little to do with race. It is about hiring someone who places a premium on discipline and fundamentals, leadership on and off the court, represents the Institute’s athletic AND academic principles, takes responsibility for his and his players’ actions, and demonstrates that winning is not inconsistent with NCAA compliance and graduating players.

Wojo sounds like a solid fall-back candidate. I’m not very familiar with Tulsa’s program and whether they invest enough money and attention to enable success in basketball, so his record there may be misleading. On the other hand, I think most Tech fans are expecting a little higher profile name. Contrary to the ignorant canine blogs littering the AJC sites, I believe that most Tech fans are realistic in their expectations and trust DRad to meet or exceed those expectations. No one expects or even wants a top-tier high-major coach who would require exorbitant compensation and who has nowhere to go but down. On the other hand, Tech is and should be in the running for some of the better mid-major names out there, expecially those with experience in building/re-building programs and whose best years appear ahead of them. Mooney, Marshall, Smart, Wojcik, among others are justifiably within reach. That is not to say that other schools won’t outbid Tech, but if it is the right fit both the coach and the Institute should know it. Too much is made of hiring salaries, when the big picture, including endorsement, media, and future compensation is the real issue. BECAUSE of Hewitt’s golden contract, Tech has proven it is willing to handsomely reward success (even though we needn’t worry about infinite roll-overs with Braine gone).

Tulsa alum here. First of all, if you know college basketball, you know that a good coach is going to win at Tulsa.
Here’s the deal with Wojcik; he’s a good man and a good coach, but something just isn’t there. Someone pointed out earlier that Woj took over an unmitigated disaster created by the previous coach, John Phillips, so he must be given a little slack for the first two or three years.
Woj is approaching the hot seat at TU. There’s no question he’ll be back next year, but if he doesn’t go to the NCAA tournament in 2012, he will most assuredly be let go. Personally, I’m okay with him staying or going. He’s recruited pretty well, so I’m fine with him getting one more year to get it done, but if he doesn’t go to the tourney next year, he’s gotta go. Conversely, if he leaves for Tech, I’m fine with that too because I’m fairly certain TU will be moving on from this guy, one way or another, before too long anyway and I’m sure he can be improved upon.
That’s just one perspective of him, take it for what it’s worth.
So, the AJC Sports staff doesn't work on weekends?

Suggestion – end the speculation on the new coach, report it when it happens. In the meantime, the baseball team is ranked as high as 8th in the nation, on a 15 game win streak while starting (usually) six or seven freshman from the number six ranked recruiting class in the country, and has taken the first two from Miami down there. This seems newsworthy to me.
