Georgia Tech says it is still looking for its basketball coach.
Associate Athletic Director Wayne Hogan issued this statement Friday night, denying a report earlier in the day by the website sportsbybrooks that said Tech had offered the job to Dayton’s Brian Gregory:
The search for the next men’s basketball coach at Georgia Tech has
not concluded and is still ongoing, contrary to a number of published
internet reports on Friday. As is our policy, we do not comment on
ongoing searches. However, due to these erroneous reports we felt
compelled to clarify the status of the search process.
The website cited a source within Tech’s athletics department. Hogan’s statement is the first public communication Tech has had about the search in more than a week, other than a note that appeared on Thursday in Dan Radakovich’s blog, “The Good Word.”
Radakovich said that he hoped to have a coach hired by the Final Four, which begins April 2 in Houston. Tech’s former coach, Paul Hewitt, was let go two weeks ago after 11 seasons.
Because of his 172-94 record at Dayton, Gregory has frequently been mentioned as a candidate for jobs, including at Iowa, DePaul and Rutgers last year. At the time, Gregory said: “I’m not interested in leaving Dayton. … I’m concerned with helping this team and the incoming players have a great summer and continuing to recruit the guys who can help us in the future.”
Among the candidates that have reportedly interviewed are Tulsa’s Doug Wojcik, New Mexico assistant and Tech alum Craig Neal, and another alum, Mark Price.

juvenal, summers in Augusta definitely suck. I’m not a golfer and seldom watch it on the tube, but actually attending the Masters is not boring in the least. It can be as exciting on the final day as any sporting event anywhere.

Supersize…I can understand that. Giving credit where it is due, PH made what is called “excuses” because he really cares about GT and its players. I became unsettled about the program a couple of years ago and really thought PH would be gone then. But PH has done about as much as he could do at Tech, and respectfully. He managed to put together some good teams, with some of the nation’s best bb players. It was to his demise that enough talented players hung around more than a couple years. And he was unable to get a couple of good centers as well. I wish him much success as well as GT’s search for a good coach.

My imposter, if he has read anything I have typed, already knows where I am from but says that he is from somewhere in SC. He also claims to be black. If he didn’t change his name to whatever I might change mine to to distinguish myself from him, I might assume that he was just an innocent person who happened to choose the same name. But he’s gone way beyond that. Funny thing is though that some of what he says I actually agree with. He hasn’t been a contrarian; just a nuisance.

Imposter, you really are sick man. And yes I know you are a grown man and not a kid, so what pleasure you get impersonating others who are just trying to keep up with what is going on at their alma mater and otherwise talk sports, I’ll never know. You should talk to your therapist about it.

Supersize, it is a little disappointing that so many of us Americans get caught up into the money issue. If my job wanted to offer me a good contract based on certain factors, I along with no one else would turn it down. So, the fan base, media, etc. must understand that the athlete has the upper hand in college sports to the point that they can hold a program at bay with their choices of where to attend school, and when they are going to leave. And those choices have run the course at GT. PH just happened to be at the wheel. Same thing happened with Cremins. And if Tech does not think fiscally as well as intelligent about the next coach (recruiter), they will start a revolving door at the bb coach position.

Supersize, I just hope that GT’s choice is not made because of money or lack thereof. If they have to pay an Anthony Grant, Smart, or Stevens, then by all means pay them. But definitely, they should not go out an make the choice part of an experiment. This move will be crucial. I hope that they do not lose sight of that.

We are going to hire Chris Mooney today or tomorrow, I feel. And I’m going to support him 100%. And I’m also going to say right now we’ll be looking for a new Head Coach in 5 seasons or less. Why?
I watched the whole game the other night to see what are the differences in his style and the Princeton style and it’s actually pretty simple. The overall concept of the offense is the exact same; backdoor cuts off doubel screens and hitting the three point shot. The one thing Chris has added is dribble penetration off the second or throd pass from the elbow. Basically once the ball has made it’s 1st rotation and is back in the hands of the point he has the option to dribble penetrate and shoot or kick if it’s there. Now here is my problem with it.
This is will not work in the ACC. Let me say that again, THIS SYSTEM WILL NOT WORK IN THE ACC. Why? Kansas showed us why. The athletes are bigger and more importantly faster. Taking away the backdoor in a power league is nothing new…..and it’s so easy it’s why no one runs the system in power leagues any longer as a staple of their offense. So all that is left is to have one strong on the ball defender and you can shut it down. You can stay in the game by hitting open threes but if you’re not hitting your shot, like Richmond struggled with vs Kansas, you’re going to get blown out. This is EXACTLY how Kansas shut it down and it’s EXACTLY how Georgia Tech beat Richmond earlier in the year. To make matters worse the teams in the power conference are so adept at running box and 1 and extended zone defenses it will make it even MORE difficult for this offense to be successful.
I hope I’m wrong, but I’d bet money I’m not. Regardless I’ll root for the guy to be successful and the team to WIN. What we’re going to see out Georgia Tech next year with Mooney is some really close wins and some really bad blowout losses.

Tech Forever, I’m not arguing with you, but wouldn’t you expect Tech to be able to have better, bigger, stronger, faster athletes on the team than Richmond does? If that is the case, could the system not work against similar athletes on other ACC or national teams?

Tech Forever, agree with your sentiments. That is why I have never been big on this type of offense. It always seemed to be used by teams trying to cover up a lack of athleticism. The other thing I would add about the top ACC teams is their length. Did you see how badly UNC made Marquette look, why even Zeller was denying passes. If it is Mooney, I will support him but I fear for his success.
At least Beesball is looking good.

Supersize, there in lies the key! Good argument by 4ever but Kansas has and gets better athletes. GT has and gets better athletes. Richmond really didnt beat anybody worth mentioning in the tournament. Recruiting is the bottom line in college sports. Hmm…Mooney…if his recruiting is superior, not mediocre, he’ll win big at Tech. If he cant get the athletes like Cremins and Hewitt did, I will echo 4ever, 3-5 years tops!

IL Jacket answered the question. The equalizer is the length top teams have and the fact that the top big men can play away from the basket. So they can play a man on man defense, be 4, 5, or 6 feet away from their guy and still deny the pass. In the A-10 is the defender isn’t in the guy’s shorts that offense will make the defense look really bad.
At the ACC level for an offense to be successful it has to take advantage of match-ups, unless you go the easy route and simply run a clearout set ala the NBA which so many are now going to (Calipari). Mooney’s offense does this at the A-10 level, but at the ACC level teams aren’t forced to match-up at all because of their speed and length. They’ll defend us by guarding space….and if they do that and we’re not hitting outside shots we’re in trouble…..and unfortunately for us this team has already demostrated it can’t hit a shot…..or even really create one.

Having better athletes won;t help this offense. It’s methodical and the method doesn’t change whether Michael Jordan is at guard or I am. If the other teams don’t have the athletes to defend it (A-10) then you have to play man on man and hustle your tail off. If you do have the athletes you can sit back and guard space in a loose man to man, box and one, extended zone, whatever, because you have the athleticism and length to make up the difference in distance.

Tech Forever, I was surprised last night at how many iso plays Calipari ran. It was very effective against OSU. Maybe I hadn’t paid a lot of attention to UK’s offense this year, but it did look very NBA. The time I got to see VCU last night, they appeared to also be running a lot of isos. I was impressed with Smart. Obviously, he had some better athletes than I appreciated.

Now Kansas could have sagged back and easily won that game by 10 or 12 or 15….but that’s not Bill Self. So they actually played a loose man defense on the baseline guarding space and then defended the 3 tight on the perimeter…..the worst of both worlds for that offense.

Tech4ever, I have agreed with you before, but if you have athletes, you can play dead and win. Not just one Jordan, but several Jordans, as he was slightly above average at UNC (uh oh…ouch). Basketball is multi dimensional. That what makes each individual team and coach different. In the NCAA tourney, and during the reg season, a team has to prepare for each team they play because of the parity. Talent trumps any one particular system. And occasionally, heart trumps talent.
