Tech: Basketball search still going

Georgia Tech says it is still looking for its basketball coach.

Associate Athletic Director Wayne Hogan issued this statement Friday night, denying a report earlier in the day by the website sportsbybrooks that said Tech had offered the job to Dayton’s Brian Gregory:

The search for the next men’s basketball coach at Georgia Tech has
not concluded and is still ongoing, contrary to a number of published
internet reports on Friday. As is our policy, we do not comment on
ongoing searches. However, due to these erroneous reports we felt
compelled to clarify the status of the search process.

The website cited a source within Tech’s athletics department. Hogan’s statement is the first public communication Tech has had about the search in more than a week, other than a note that appeared on Thursday in Dan Radakovich’s blog, “The Good Word.”

Radakovich said that he hoped to have a coach hired by the Final Four, which begins April 2 in Houston. Tech’s former coach, Paul Hewitt, was let go two weeks ago after 11 seasons.

Because of his 172-94 record at Dayton, Gregory has frequently been mentioned as a candidate for jobs, including at Iowa, DePaul and Rutgers last year. At the time, Gregory said: “I’m not interested in leaving Dayton. … I’m concerned with helping this team and the incoming players have a great summer and continuing to recruit the guys who can help us in the future.”

Among the candidates that have reportedly interviewed are Tulsa’s Doug Wojcik, New Mexico assistant and Tech alum Craig Neal, and another alum, Mark Price.

Still@theBar, not saying you’re wrong, but the man is only 33 years old; he hasn’t had a “long period of time.” People probably said the same thing at one point about Stevens or maybe even Coach K. And remember there was a time when he was at Kansas that Roy Williams could “never win the big one.” Early impressions are not always correct, for either good or bad. I just spoke with a South Carolina fan who is a friend of mine. He said that he always like Fogler when he was coaching at SC, but the Fogler-picked successor is a POS. That does not make me feel good about DRAD using Fogler as a resource in finding our next coach.

The GOD of AAU basketball players has spoken. HEWITT FAN says we still don’t have the COACH he wants. So still no Atl CELTIC players for TECH. Oh heaven forbid HEWITT FAN is not happy yet. TECH should just hire HEWITT FAN to select Tech’s new coach.

Supersize,
When Coach K was introduced as HC at Duke, he was 34 years old, had 5 years experience as HC and was coming off a 9-17 season at Army! The Duke fans at the time were less than impressed.

POAD
Duke hired Coach K after Bill Foster left voluntarily to become coach at SC. He had Duke in the Elite Eight in his final year.
Duke wasn’t the only school to hire a young coach in 1980. NCSU hired Jimmy V the same year and GT hired Bobby a year later. The ACC truly was a great basketball conference in the mid 80’s. As well as the 3 young guys, Dean Smith was at UNC, Lefty at MD, Terry Holland at UVA

Every teams fans always think they got Jobbed by the Referees. Do you think sometimes the refs are right Hewitt Fan? Do you think Coach K teaches his kids Disciplined Fundamental basketball and the refs see that?

Supersize, boy are you prescient! That did not take but 24 minutes! I know it is hard for us old farts to accept, but an old white guy in a suit just does not relate to today’s kids, especially top-flight basketball talent. Even look at Bob Huggins, he is trying to channel his inner guerilla.

Not Excited, when you move up in conference level, you move up in talent level available. I believe if you can win on one level, you should be able to replicate your success on the next level.

The referees in the Duke-Michigan game were Verne Harris, Ed Corbett and Gary Maxwell
Verne Harris worked 0 ACC games in 2010-11 He worked 11 MWC and 13 WAC games
Ed Corbett worked 8 ACC games and 27 Big East games – he is basically a Big East ref
Gary Maxwell worked <4 ACC games – he is basically an SEC ref

Yes PAUL Bill had Duke in the NCAA his last 3 years before heading to replace the Legend McGuire at USC. That is what I was saying. Duke has looking Great and the coach left so they had to pick a new coach. I am sure the fans were not all happy back then, but now they are happy. It is always hurts when the coach Choses to leave when he was on TOP.

Umm…If anyone says that PH is a bad coach, they obviously dont know anything about basketball. As hard for it is to admit, when equipped with a solid team w/o injuries, etc. PH is a pretty good coach. He was sought after just last year…right? No hoax there. He is recognized around the NCAA as a good coach. Again, PH simply ran his course at Tech. This has nothing to do with the AAU and all that other crap. Tech needs a good hire now. A coach who has relatively good head coaching exp., is a great recruiter (primarily), and has a good rapport with the players. Tech does not need to hire an experiment such as former players, or totally inexperienced coaches. Everyone is getting excited about Richmond’s coach and others, but we must be reminded that these coaches are successful with the programs they have there. There is no guarantee that their success will carry over to Tech. DRAD must weigh this carefully in the search. To have a predetermined candidate could be suicide to the program, especially if all options have not been taken into consideration. Go Jackets!

Supersize, that is what I said…there is no guarantee (when dealing with mediocre choices). But there are choices that would guarantee success (outside of major catastrophies): i.e. Calipari, Coach K, Anthony Grant, Pitino, Boeheim, etc. These guys create results. And if Tech wants results, they will have to either pay for it, or resort to what you call “crap shoots”.

IL Jacket, most of the small to medium-sized azaleas in Augusta are already in full bloom, as are the dogwoods. Most of the azaleas on the course are much larger and bloom later. They might be ok come the week of the tournament, but the small ones will be gone by then. You’ll just have to enjoy the lush green of the fairways and greens, I guess. The dry ice story is apparently just an old wives’ tale; the groundskeepers at the National deny every putting ice on the plants.

gomabman2, I’m not sure I would include Anthony Grant in that list. However, there are not many schools who could afford to hire the likes of the others you mentioned, plus a few more, taking them away from the jobs they already have. So with almost any coaching change at any school, it is somewhat of a crap shoot.
