Tech: Basketball search still going

Georgia Tech says it is still looking for its basketball coach.

Associate Athletic Director Wayne Hogan issued this statement Friday night, denying a report earlier in the day by the website sportsbybrooks that said Tech had offered the job to Dayton’s Brian Gregory:

The search for the next men’s basketball coach at Georgia Tech has
not concluded and is still ongoing, contrary to a number of published
internet reports on Friday. As is our policy, we do not comment on
ongoing searches. However, due to these erroneous reports we felt
compelled to clarify the status of the search process.

The website cited a source within Tech’s athletics department. Hogan’s statement is the first public communication Tech has had about the search in more than a week, other than a note that appeared on Thursday in Dan Radakovich’s blog, “The Good Word.”

Radakovich said that he hoped to have a coach hired by the Final Four, which begins April 2 in Houston. Tech’s former coach, Paul Hewitt, was let go two weeks ago after 11 seasons.

Because of his 172-94 record at Dayton, Gregory has frequently been mentioned as a candidate for jobs, including at Iowa, DePaul and Rutgers last year. At the time, Gregory said: “I’m not interested in leaving Dayton. … I’m concerned with helping this team and the incoming players have a great summer and continuing to recruit the guys who can help us in the future.”

Among the candidates that have reportedly interviewed are Tulsa’s Doug Wojcik, New Mexico assistant and Tech alum Craig Neal, and another alum, Mark Price.

Winning a National Championship is never a goal. Winning your league and making the NCAA Tournament….those are the two primary goals. Once you’ve made the tournament your goal is to win the next game.

Beside, given what’s he’s accompolished I Stevens has a better shot at winning one at Butler in the next 3 or 4 years than he would Tech.

I’ll tell you this, if it’s true and Gregory is our next HC it will a Chan Gailey reception and he’ll be behind the 8 ball with the fanbase as well as with what he has on the court just like Gailey was.

And Hogan and Drad better get ready to answer some pretty tough questions because there is no way anyone is going to accept “we feel like Gregory is the best fit for Georgia Tech basketball” when asked why did we chose him.

Shaka Smart! Shaka Smart! Shaka Smart! Should be the next coach he young and what I seen tonight they play there hearts out! He clearly can coach he smart period.. I would take a point guard any day thats on VCU team Rodriguez kid plays hard. Imagine What Shaka would have done with Tech Talent this year.. I’m telling you he’s a winner just like Butler Brad Stevens. This are the future of coaching.. I know like to see Bobby Cremins but I think we need a young coach. VCU Coach lets make a run at him the price may not be to high like Butler Coach he will cost alot money

I’m amazed that a school with fans that are allegedly so well heeled is among the most destitute in all of college athletics. God help you guys when the poser Johnson leaves. You won’t be able to hire a grad assistant to coach your football team. Of course GT being a basketball school you probably should break the bank for a basketball coach.

The way Gt fan base treated Hewitt , bashed GT players, let Mark Bradley run Hewitt out of town, only meant one thing…NO GOOD COACH WILL EVER COME TO GT..Its all over the AAU circuit..The only way GT gets any players now is if they PAY a kid…This guy has done nothing at Dayton. No one wanted to come to the ACC and get robbed on the road by the refs and a fan base that lets Mark Bradley run their Lives…Everyone in the nation watched how Gt turned their back on Hewitt..this is exactly what GT deserves..GT will be looking for another coach in 3 years!…If he is hired, you can kiss Kevin Ware good bye and any other Celtic for the next 5 years, at least..GO Jackets!

Craig Neal should have been the first choice, due to his relationship with the ATLANTA CELTICS..He could have got any player he wanted in Metro Atlanta…Your dad Mark Bradley told you all that Neal had connections with us.Mark Bradley knows that right now the whole AAU circuit is scared to send kids to GT, and the relationship had to be restored….We determine if GT wins or not…You all will find out very soon, its all about Players, not coaching..If you have no players, you lose, unless you are Duke…

Sports Radio 910 in Richmond is reporting that Mooney has been offered the job and is considering the offer. Should know today on a hire or that GT is moving to Plan B.

GT as a school is anything but down and out financially with a 1.5 billion endowment. The GTAA is separate as it is for all schools. With the new ESPN contract and Radakovich’s leadership, it isn’t in as bad a shape as many would have you believe.

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Rumors swirl about job offers for UD’s head basketball coach, Brian Gregory.

Right now, it’s just gossip. However, the website http://www.sportsbybrooks.com is reporting the Georgia Tech head coaching job.

The website quotes an unnamed source within the Georgia Tech athletic office that Gregory was extended an offer, however, in a statement to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Yellow Jackets Athletic Director Wayne Hogan denied the report.

Hogan went on to say the university has a policy not to comment on ongoing searches, but due to this erroneous report, he felt compelled to clarify the situation.

University of Dayton Athletic Director, Tim Wabler, said he hasn’t been contacted by anyone at Georgia Tech, so at the moment, this remains just another internet rumor.

The job is and has been about as sealed up as it can be by Mooney since before CPH was even “officially” let go. Everything else is a smoke screen to keep the peeps at bay.

Hewitt Fan, it’s over, Hewitt is gone, and Bradley, despite your protestations, had nothing to do with it other than adding more fuel to the fire already burning amongst the Tech faithful. If you think the fans OR the school were influenced by what Bradley, or any other sports writer, then you are more foolish than most of your posts indicate. The fact is that Hewitt turned out to be a totally worthless coach who drove the fans away because he couldn’t turn all the talent he recruited into a decent, or even half-way decent TEAM.

Furthermore, Hewitt Fan, if, as you say, the Atlanta Celtics AAU organization are all turned off on Tech now, then so be it. Assuming Tech hires a good coach who can produce a good TEAM, then those same people will quickly change their tune, because to do otherwise would be totally unfair to the kids who play in that organization. You can rant and moan all you want about Duke getting all the calls and how badly (according to you) Tech treated Hewitt and his players, but in the end it’s about winning, and a GOOD coach can produce a winning team in the ACC, the same as a good coach can produce a winning team at any other school in any conference in the country. What you post here is no more (or less) important or knowledgeable than what any of the rest of us post; in the end we are all only posting our personal opinions. Some opinions show a sign of intelligence; some do not; and some, of course, are just the posts of ignorant redneck THUGa fans.

IF you truly care about the kids associated with the Celtics, then you should be forgetting the past and hoping that whomever Tech hires will produce a winning program, one in which the kids associated with the Celtics would be proud to be a part of and be able to showcase their talents in the area. Grow up, get over whatever personal grudges you have, and let’s move on.,

Okeefe/Bob, I was impressed last night too. I had no opinion about the man at all prior to that game, but that changed as a result of seeing him last night. For one thing, I was really impressed by he on-the-court demeanor. I LOVED his enthusiasm. I can’t say that he is (or is not) first on my list, but he’s certainly up there now. I have yet to see or read anything about the guy from Dayton that impresses me though. I sure hope that that is just an unfounded rumor.

With respect to all the commentary regarding ” Stevens will never leave, Few will never leave, etc.” DRad would be engaging in gross negligence is he does not at least ask, if these are viewed as the most desirable candidates. Those are the same things that were said about Roy Williams when he was at Kansas and the UNC job came up, but UNC asked and was turned down, but that did not stop them from asking the next time and they were successful and now two NCs later I am sure ole Roy is glad he said yes. Coaches’ perspectives change, family circumstances change, even administrations change. Unless you ask you never know.

Supersize, my reaction was exactly the same as yours. Had not followed Smart until this year, but like you the thing that was most impressive was his enthusiasm, he was really into the game. It is hard not to go all out for a coach who is so high energy. That is the thing I have always been amazed about Coach K, say what you will he is still passionate and that translates to his players. When they were flat against Michigan, he literally willed them to the win. When the coached is excited, the fans get excited.

IL Jacket, I totally agree. You know I used to HATE Coach K, and obviously I still do hate Duke. But watching him over the years, I have really learned to admire him for his abilities…and that includes his ability to work the refs. Sure the rest of us suffer as a result, but which one of us wouldn’t want our coach to be able to do the same thing. And the man does produce winners. But getting back to Smart, can’t you hear the rednecks now if he were Tech’s coach? I GUARANTEE you, that regardless of anything else they would be calling him eagle beak or some similar stupid name because he has a big nose (and boy, he DOES have one…..LOL). When the rednecks know they are up against a good coach they immediately start berating him because of the way he looks, as if that has anything at all to do with his coaching abilities. I’ll take a big nose or a fat neck or any other attribute if the man can coach.

would be more upset about no aau kids if coaches there actually taught kids to dribble, pass shoot FTs, etc…..what is great is i can’t remember a time when there were so many good, young coaches building something out of nothing……..don’t hate anybody, & Duke gets folks to watch ball games on tv, if you can’t go there, everybody in the US watches you play them 1-4 times a year if you are in the ACC….dan, folks who have money have it in part because they don’t like to waste it, unlike, say, lottery winners & most pro atheletes……

It’s one thing to have a great basketball mind (which Brian Gregory has been accused of. It’s a different thing to be able to translate what’s in your mind to 18-22-year-old kids (which Gregory’s career record shows he does just okay). I’ll be bummed if this proves true.
