Tech: Basketball search still going

Georgia Tech says it is still looking for its basketball coach.

Associate Athletic Director Wayne Hogan issued this statement Friday night, denying a report earlier in the day by the website sportsbybrooks that said Tech had offered the job to Dayton’s Brian Gregory:

The search for the next men’s basketball coach at Georgia Tech has
not concluded and is still ongoing, contrary to a number of published
internet reports on Friday. As is our policy, we do not comment on
ongoing searches. However, due to these erroneous reports we felt
compelled to clarify the status of the search process.

The website cited a source within Tech’s athletics department. Hogan’s statement is the first public communication Tech has had about the search in more than a week, other than a note that appeared on Thursday in Dan Radakovich’s blog, “The Good Word.”

Radakovich said that he hoped to have a coach hired by the Final Four, which begins April 2 in Houston. Tech’s former coach, Paul Hewitt, was let go two weeks ago after 11 seasons.

Because of his 172-94 record at Dayton, Gregory has frequently been mentioned as a candidate for jobs, including at Iowa, DePaul and Rutgers last year. At the time, Gregory said: “I’m not interested in leaving Dayton. … I’m concerned with helping this team and the incoming players have a great summer and continuing to recruit the guys who can help us in the future.”

Among the candidates that have reportedly interviewed are Tulsa’s Doug Wojcik, New Mexico assistant and Tech alum Craig Neal, and another alum, Mark Price.

However, because Tech isn’t talking either way, I’m still trying to find out what’s true.

Another thing, why would Gregory be in Las Vegas recruiting if he had been offered the job. This story is dying fast.

[...] However, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Dayton AD Tim Wabler hasn’t been contacted by anyone requesting to speak to Gregory. [...]

dude, it’s not sloppy reporting. I’m reporting what’s there and trying to verify independently what’s true and what’s not. Sloppy reporting would be to put it out there without attribution.

Not a Tech fan, but if true,I would believe most Tech fans would be disappointed..The ACC hasn’t made a dynamic hire in a long time..Duke,Carolina and Maryland all have proven winners, but the last few hires in the ACC haven’t made much of a splash..The Big three and the nine mediocres.

Gordon, again I’m not sure this is true. Radakovich is a meticulous person. I doubt he interviews Gregory, or Fogler interviews him, without asking for permission.

However, Dayton lost in the NIT last week. There’s been plenty of time for them to talk.

I was just kidding around, Doug. You know Radakovich better than I do, but what I do know about him is that he would not hire away another AD’s coach without talking to him first, and Gregory would not be in Las Vegas now if he had been offered the job.

Blatant yellow journalism by SportsByBrooks…

“Lubbock, TX (KCBD) – Texas Tech football coach Tommy Tuberville has denied rumors today that he is unhappy with his decision to accept a coaching position in Lubbock. The online rumors stem from a Facebook post by the popular sports web site SportsByBrooks.com:

“Citing unnamed sources, the Sports by Brooks Facebook post stated the following earlier today:

“Tuberville is absolutely miserable at Texas Tech. Wishes he hadn’t heeded advice of Under Armour folks and taken TTU job. One of his complaints is ADs Myers/Hocutt are powerless to keep admins and boosters in check. Leach refused to kiss their rings, and you see what that got him. #tubs has told multiple sources he wishes he’d taken USF job over TTU.”"

“Coach Tuberville made the following response to KCBD NewsChannel 11:

“I don’t know where that came from. How is the weather here? Whoever wrote that blog needs to come down here. He probably doesn’t have weather this nice.

“But no, this is a great place. We’re gonna build something here that people can be proud of, but I think that comes from a lot of people who probably would hope that we would pack up and leave.

“We’re looking forward to it. It’s gonna be a tough challenge the next couple of years getting it to to where we want to get it to, but I imagine that’s coming from across the river somewhere that they would hope I would go somewhere else.”

Well I am going to retract my statement. I talked to a Dayton fan and he screamed Thank God! I was also set straight about player development – with the exception of Chris Wright – is not that great either. He did say he was a nice guy though.

Doug, I’m sure you’re a nice guy, but there’s a reason DRad doesn’t want the media to know about this particular situation. Just relax, sit back and wait for the REAL news to come out in a couple days. Then you can use those writing skillz to energize the fanbase. Cheers, I have a couple for you tonight.

well well well it looks like the “chosen one” is getting his backside kicked in by Kansas at the moment, you know, playing Vanderbilt and Morehead would be just a slight difference than playing Kansas. Oh but now you know it alls can get your guy Mooney to interview after tonight.

Anyone remember the tournament darling in 2008? The Western Ky coach. South Carolina couldn’t hire him fast enough. He went 15-16 this season. AND YOU PEOPLE WANT TO ACCUSE MARK PRICE. ha

I’m with you right stuff, not sold on the Moon man at all. In his first 3 seasons at Richmond he was a combined 37-54. How much energy will our fan base have if we get 3 more seasons of that. I’ll give him credit for this year and last year being solid (55-16 combined), but is our fan base patient enough to give an outsider 4 years to get it going?? I don’t think so.

Bad night to watch the tourney tonight..Let’s hope KY-OlieOH state lives up to its billing..These 11-12 seeds are getting killed and that plays a part in the eventual winner having an easier road to the final four.

Wojcik might be okay though any outsider is not going to energize me until I see positive results. Wojcik’s last season at 19-13 was not so impressive but his four 20+ win seasons before that is hopeful for an upstart coach, albeit in a mediocre league.

Nice to get some confirmation that the Gregory report is a hoax. The guy’s record is not bad but at best Dayton has been a darkhorse type of team not unlike Richmond. The splash these guys make just doesn’t make me eager about next season. No way will I turn away from the program but in my mind a good hire is someone who immediately makes me want next season to come quickly.

Glad to see that Tech has issued a statement stating the search is still ongoing. Doug, I am glad you are the Tech beat reporter. You have done an excellent job over the past year and all Tech folks ought to be glad you are so conscientious in feeding our frenzy for information. All you did was report what a web site stated. You have been trying to get clarification for days on the basketball coach search. I think the Tech Athletic Director seems to have his act together too. Glad he updated us in “The Good Word.” We Tech fans are just going to have to be a little more patient over the next day or so.

Will support whoever DRAD hires, but really don’t think Gregory is the man we want. I’d rather take the big gamble on Neal and Price than a very middling HC. At least Mooney is finally available to interview, whether or not we have a shot at him.

Just to be clear, I don’t think Neal or Price is ready for the job but there are plenty of better prospects out there than Gregory, it would seem. In the end, we all have to trust DRAD’s judgment.

Gregory was Izzo’s right hand man at Michigan St. for a number of years, and has done a commendable job at UD. He needs to hold out for a Big Ten or Big East job, instead of the train wreck that the Ga. Tech job would be.

Doug, don’t pay these guys any mind. You have a job to do just like the rest of us. Speaking of jobs…lol…Gregory is only looking for a paycheck. Surely, he nor DRAD does not think that he can take on a job of this level and turn it around. He has no notoriety whatsoever with the type of athletes required to field a ball team in the ACC. Next! (The coach for the job, now that Anderson is gone, is either Brad Stevens or Shaka Smart)
