Fogler’s history of helping find coaches

Eddie Fogler, who led three different teams to the NCAA tournament, is assisting Georgia Tech athletic director Dan Radakovich in his search for the team’s next basketball coach. Radakovich decided not to retain Paul Hewitt after 11 seasons.

This isn’t Fogler’s first go-round helping schools find a new leader. So, how has he done? First, it must be noted that Fogler just serves in an advisory capacity. He doesn’t make the hire. Obviously he has no influence on the team’s success beyond helping the search committee.

He has advised at least five schools: Auburn, Kansas State, Illinois-Chicago, South Carolina and Tennessee. He’s also assisting Towson in its current search.

Here’s what has happened:

School…..New Coach……Record at New School.

Auburn……..Tony Barbee, formerly at UTEP……11-20.

There were some that said Barbee should have gotten consideration for SEC coach of the year, considering the mess he inherited.

Illinois-Chicago………….Howard Moore, former assistant at Wisconsin……….7-24.

Indiana……………………..Tom Crean……………………..28-66 in three seasons, including an 8-46 mark in the Big Ten. Not good.

Kansas State………….Frank Martin, an assistant on staff……… 94-42.

The Wildcats haven’t regretted this hire.

South Carolina………….Darrin Horn, formerly at Western Kentucky…………… 50-42.

After a great start (21-10), Horn hasn’t had a winning record in the past two seasons (29-32).

Tennessee State……….John Cooper, formerly an assistant at Auburn……………….. 23-39.

UNC-Wilmington………..Buzz Peterson……………………………………13-17, 7-11.

A little more on Fogler:

He played for Dean Smith at North Carolina, where he later became an assistant coach and helped to recruit Michael Jordan.

He became a head coch at Wichita State, where he went 61-32 from 1986-89

He accepted the job at Vanderbilt, going 81-48 from 1989-92, including an NIT championship, SEC championship and Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA tournament.

He accepted the job at South Carolina, but didn’t have the same success. He went 123-117 with two NCAA tournament appearances.

If I find more examples, I’ll add them to the chart.

Not very impressive credentials for Fogler as an advisor. Radakovich must have known him pretty well at South Carolina. I trust DRad’s judgment more than Fogler’s, but the AD can’t be everywhere at once.

Fogler’s value is in being a third-party through whom potential candidates and their agents can communicate via “back channels” to question the various criteria of the GT job and what the compensation and terms might be. Being discreet is key.

Whether Fogler’s “recommendations” are actually hired is immaterial and not a testament to his purpose. Tech had BETTER do its OWN interviewing of candidates, and the success or failure of the hire is on DRAD; not Fogler.

One more thing: DRAD can do everything exactly right, get the best candidate for GT, and STILL have it “not work out”. Nevertheless, I’m confident that his process is good, and that he’ll get the best coach he can within the resources and information he’ll have at the time a decision is required.

Fogler is an outstanding basketball mind. While on Dean Smith’s UNC staff, it was he, and not Roy Williams, that was thought to be the coach with the best future. Doug Roberson

March 17th, 2011
3:55 pm

I thought Iman showed tremendous improvement this year but there’s no way he’s a top-10 pick. He’s not even listed in the first two rounds of many mock drafts. That surprises me, actually.

What does the next coach need to do? He needs to find someone to take the scoring pressure off Shumpert. He can be a good shooter, but not when he has to take so many shots, as he did this year. He didn’t get chances to beat people off the dribble this year, either. Another shooter would allow him to try and showcase that skill. He’s so much bigger than other point guards, he can also post up. He did some of that this year, but not a lot.

Doug Roberson

March 17th, 2011
3:58 pm

Cameron, I don’t know who I would pick. There are so many factors.

Chris Mooney seems like he would be a strong candidate, but is he going to energize the fan base? How many of you have heard of him before this year?

This is arguably the biggest hire Radakovich has had to make. Gailey was consistently winning as the football coach, but Radakovich saw the fan base wanted more. The basketball team hasn’t had that consistency and it’s got a new arena that will soon be on the way. It’s a $45 million hire.

Doug Roberson

March 17th, 2011
4:02 pm

Who would you hire?

Doug Roberson

March 17th, 2011

If Shumpert has another year similar to this one, with a bit more consistency on defense and a slightly improved shooting percentage, I think he will be a first-round pick in 2012

If ANYONE else had been AD other than Dave Braine-less (aka Dave Spine-less)..

1. Gailey would have NEVER been hired.
2. Or, Gailey would have been DESERVEDLY fired after his 3rd year.

Anyone else the common thread between Braine’s hire of Galiey and Hewitt??

Both Gailey and Hewitt were:

1. Complacent
2. Arrogant to fans
3. Arrogant to media
4. Had the audacity to try to defend a track record, that couldnt be defended.

However, the decisions to hire Gailey and Hewitt were not nearly as bad as the

At first, I had no idea, part of me felt last year they should have went after Brad Stevens, but I do realize they are strapped for cash due to the buyout. The more I read and the more think about it, I truly believe Craig Neal is the best choice. I like Eddie Fogler helping Tech. He is a Carolina alum and he was at Vandy, they were successful. He went to South Carolina probably thinking of South Carolina as the old ACC school he played, which were world beaters. Once South Carolina joined the SEC basketball took a back seat though Eddie did a good job there too for what he was working with. North Carolina alums seem to do pretty good as coaches. Roy came from there, Brown, they know good coaching and they know ACC atmosphere. Who they hire is any one’s guess but they have at least one a ACC type looking.

“Thank you (deleted my name here) for the note…. couple of facts…. I know they may hurt the romance of the rumor but they are facts….
1) there is no influential booster.or rich alum influencing the decision…
2) I am not for or against hiring Tech folks…

My vote, if I had one: Craig Neal. (As much as I love and respect Mark Price and can see why lot of people would hire him as a thank you for what he has done, I just did not see a progression from him that indicated he wanted to be a head coach. He’s a fine human being, family man, GT family member and does not have to prove himself to anyone to be happy.) Coach Neal has the smarts to surround himself with good poeple and command respect based on his career steps.

Otherwise, I’d be content with Mooney, or Stevens, or Gregory.

Regarding Mooney and the Princeton offense, winning will put fans in the seats at the new Thriller Dome. Under Mooney, little old Richmond has gone 8-3 in its past 11 against major programs (Purdue, Vandy this year, Florida, Missouri and Mississippi State last year). Would you rather be undisciplined and inconsistent, or run a version of the Princeton offense, play intense defense and make the NCAA tourney?

No matter if Neal, Mooney, Grant or someone else, the fan base will have to be a little patient as the new coach implements his system. Some nice pieces are in place.

She read the tea leaves and told me this:

Tubby is still out there for Tech and NC State. Tennessee has dibs on Donnie Tyndall and will be firing Pearl. Shaka Smart will look at NC State but wants to go to a SEC school. NC State will be throwing a lot of $$ at Mooney and talking to Tubby.

Tommy Amaker has already been sniffing around for Tech job. Mooney has showed interest indirectly but will give NC State the nod because he was not Tech’s number 1 choice.

And the number 1 choice for Tech: Brad Stevens – AND – he will tell Tech NO and we will be screwed because we put all of our eggs in Steven’s basket.

I asked for my money back…. she laughed and told me for another 30$ she would tell me what Tech’s recruits would sign next year.

Eddie Fogler has a very keen basketball mind. His biggest drawback as a college head coach was his inability to deal with certain members of the press. He won an SEC championship at South Carolina. He was named national Coach of the Year at both Vanderbilt and South Carolina. The AD at South Carolina ran him off because he wouldn’t be a brown nose. He was building a really good program when he was let go.

Yes, no need to hurry into a bad hire. While we won’t get in a bidding war with anyone anyway, it would be nice to lock in a coach as early as possible for recruiting, p.r., and clarity. We don’t want to negotiate with a Mooney or a Marshall after NC State has just overpaid a Miller or Barnes: it would likely indirectly cost us more even though they’re different men, different jobs.

At least Dollar Bill is understanding of a good coach who can develop players, look at Donnie Tyndall and stop with these other guys. We beat Richmond with our former coach, Tyndall and the Morehead State eagles upset Pitino and he was not going to settle for a tie. Know for a fact that this guy will take the job and stay a while if offered. If nothing else, give him an interview. He was great on Mike and Mike this morning. The guy can coach and graduate players, he won’t be long for Morehead State, forget about MArtin, Marshall, Stansbury, we need the intensity of this guy.

There are some good posts on this blog. They are the ones who have said let DRad (assisted by Folger) handle the hiring of a new coach. GT will make its own decision without listening to the bloggers.

I’m really tempted to email Drad again asking about the availability of Bruce Pearl. Sure, Pearl has some baggage, but it sounds like he is remorseful. Heck, just look how he completely turned around two programs! He worked miracles at UCLA and at Tennesee, and he can definitely do the same at Tech, with a much better recruiting base in Atlanta.

I suspect Pearl will have to take a step back before going forward to a good job.
I can’t see us hiring Pearl.
Only way Pearl gets the job is if the Tech job has fallen a lot more than any of us think.
Like Woodson, not going to happen.
I agree with trusting DRAD & Folger with the choice.

I respectfully disagree Jackets2011. I think Drad will feel kind of desperate and will try to win at all cost. Say what you want about the guy, Bruce Pearl is an excellent basketball coach.

Pearl gone. Actually this game was academic. Funny…. academics and UT. Ha!
Tyndall to UT. Mooney to NCSU. Tech to dance with Stevens and he says no -” I will stay with the one that brung me”. Sister Doreen upgraded to prophet status and I go back down to PhenixCcity and find out our recruits that will sign next year.

I know he’s young but the coach that I would look at is the Memphis Coach, Pastner??? He’s young (33)and his team plays hard and fast. They need a coach that can recruit and relate to the young players.

When did Pearl coach at UCLA? Don’t think so. He is anything but remorseful. Four days after shedding crocodile tears at a press conference where he fesses up, he commits yet another violation. Scumbag.

As bad as Tech fans feel about the current state of their hoops program, NC State is in a much more desperate position. State relies far more heavily on basketball as its defining athletics program and needs to make a big splash with their next hire. Since their apparent first choice, Arizona’s Miller, may be untouchable, State may be dipping deeper into the same applicant pool as Tech. Namely, Richmond’s Mooney is likely on both schools’ short list, and the farther he goes in the NCAA tournament the more likely he is to end up at State. I don’t think Tech is in position to enter a bidding war with State for a hoops coach, and the State administration (AD and chancellor) have made it clear they are eager and willing to pay handsomely to rejuvenate their flagship sport. Mooney makes a bigger splash as the coach of an Elite Eight or even Final Four team, both goals within reach now that Richmond’s future opponents look less formidable than a few days ago.

Bruce Pearl’s NCAA violations are rather minor compared to recent transgressions by Tressel and company. The right move for Tennessee is to fire AD Hamilton (completely incompetent) and let the next AD decide Pearl’s fate. All that said, Pearl’s deceiving the NCAA and then breaking the rules again right after apologizing is bad and puts UT in a vulnerable situation. The NCAA should demand that Hamilton–the man who hired Kiffin and Pearl’s boss–be either sanctioned or fired, but then the suits generally stick together. UT will never get the SMU treatment, but they are flirting with constant scrutiny by the hypocritical NCAA.

Whoever hires Pearl next is inviting the NCAA to scrutinize their athletics program. I can’t see him going to another high-major school for his next stop, though I have no doubt he will be in the final four soon with somebody.

Is Georgia Tech ready for Shaka Smart’s “havoc” style of play? His stock and his profile are rising even as we speak, and Radakovich seems to be leaning towards an up-and-comer. Can’t imagine NCSU being interested in him as he is not as established as Mooney and others, so he may fall to Tech.

How about John Salley? Salley’s engaging personality, professional experience, and GT performance (including graduation) makes for a pretty attractive resume. In addition to having some credibility with recruits, I believe it would actually be “fun” to return to Alexander – something I didn’t do this past season although I am a 20+ year season ticket holder.

My sources are simply friends well connected in the GT community. They may not be better than someone elses sources. I know them to be reliable and credible and where pertinent info is divulged I will pass along what I know.

Again I have been told that no former GT players or coaches are on the short list. Chris Mooney of Richmond is still the runaway frontrunner. Grant is still in play but appears a long shot. Living in Richmond I can assure you nobody connected with UR is expecting Mooney back. He may not end up at GT but he is going somewhere.

NCSU if Debbie Yow (ster) cannot get Barnes or Turgeon – she WILL get Mooney. Why Mooney would go to Cow College and play third fiddle to UNC and Duke? Come to Tech and you can play second fiddle to Duke. We seem to at least have a fighting chance with UNC.

Price or Neal would reenergize the fan base, I’ll grant you that.
I don’t think Supersize or myself should be ashamed for questioning giving the job to an ex-player and asking whether any candidate is qualified.
Now either of the two may be just what we need to get the fans back.
But I went to games during the Curry years and there was one exciting year out of seven just to get dumped after we had trained him.
But if DRAD decides on Price or Neal, I’m fine with it.
I just want him to give it sufficent thought and not just go along with it because someone like Bobby Dodd is pushing the idea on him.
Some have said that is what happened to Rice on the Curry hire.

Gregg Marshall is the perfect guy for this job at Tech. Proven winner who demands: 1) defense; 2) good passing; 3) proficient foul shooting; 4) players must be gentlemen. Great guy with a nice family. Proven ability that we need.
