Eddie Fogler, who led three different teams to the NCAA tournament, is assisting Georgia Tech athletic director Dan Radakovich in his search for the team’s next basketball coach. Radakovich decided not to retain Paul Hewitt after 11 seasons.
This isn’t Fogler’s first go-round helping schools find a new leader. So, how has he done? First, it must be noted that Fogler just serves in an advisory capacity. He doesn’t make the hire. Obviously he has no influence on the team’s success beyond helping the search committee.
He has advised at least five schools: Auburn, Kansas State, Illinois-Chicago, South Carolina and Tennessee. He’s also assisting Towson in its current search.
Here’s what has happened:
School…..New Coach……Record at New School.
Auburn……..Tony Barbee, formerly at UTEP……11-20.
There were some that said Barbee should have gotten consideration for SEC coach of the year, considering the mess he inherited.
Illinois-Chicago………….Howard Moore, former assistant at Wisconsin……….7-24.
Indiana……………………..Tom Crean……………………..28-66 in three seasons, including an 8-46 mark in the Big Ten. Not good.
Kansas State………….Frank Martin, an assistant on staff……… 94-42.
The Wildcats haven’t regretted this hire.
South Carolina………….Darrin Horn, formerly at Western Kentucky…………… 50-42.
After a great start (21-10), Horn hasn’t had a winning record in the past two seasons (29-32).
Tennessee State……….John Cooper, formerly an assistant at Auburn……………….. 23-39.
UNC-Wilmington………..Buzz Peterson……………………………………13-17, 7-11.
A little more on Fogler:
He played for Dean Smith at North Carolina, where he later became an assistant coach and helped to recruit Michael Jordan.
He became a head coch at Wichita State, where he went 61-32 from 1986-89
He accepted the job at Vanderbilt, going 81-48 from 1989-92, including an NIT championship, SEC championship and Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA tournament.
He accepted the job at South Carolina, but didn’t have the same success. He went 123-117 with two NCAA tournament appearances.
If I find more examples, I’ll add them to the chart.

If Shumpert has another year similar to this one, with a bit more consistency on defense and a slightly improved shooting percentage, I think he will be a first-round pick in 2012

Not in the Gregg Marshall camp. Have heard quite a few intimations that he is quite, to put it mildly, a jerk. And when he was at Winthrop and winning, there were several big time openings in the Carolinas and he never got a sniff. Sounds like a few people knew something that wasn’t real good.

Gailey SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-CKED
If ANYONE else had been AD other than Dave Braine-less (aka Dave Spine-less)..
1. Gailey would have NEVER been hired.
2. Or, Gailey would have been DESERVEDLY fired after his 3rd year.
Anyone else the common thread between Braine’s hire of Galiey and Hewitt??
Both Gailey and Hewitt were:
1. Complacent
2. Arrogant to fans
3. Arrogant to media
4. Had the audacity to try to defend a track record, that couldnt be defended.
However, the decisions to hire Gailey and Hewitt were not nearly as bad as the
Ultra-Bad decision to hire…Dave (!@#$%^&*) Braine.

At first, I had no idea, part of me felt last year they should have went after Brad Stevens, but I do realize they are strapped for cash due to the buyout. The more I read and the more think about it, I truly believe Craig Neal is the best choice. He cleary wants the job, Steve Aldord gave him a great reference, and I think he has plenty of experience, that the time is now for his shot as a head coach.

I like Eddie Fogler helping Tech. He is a Carolina alum and he was at Vandy, they were successful. He went to South Carolina probably thinking of South Carolina as the old ACC school he played, which were world beaters. Once South Carolina joined the SEC basketball took a back seat though Eddie did a good job there too for what he was working with. North Carolina alums seem to do pretty good as coaches. Roy came from there, Brown, they know good coaching and they know ACC atmosphere. Who they hire is any one’s guess but they have at least one a ACC type looking.

After hearing too many rumors that Mark Price was going to be hired, I fired off an email to DRad, stating my case against Price as head coach and my concern that some rich alum might be calling the shots. Within an hour, I got the following response —-
“Thank you (deleted my name here) for the note…. couple of facts…. I know they may hurt the romance of the rumor but they are facts….
1) there is no influential booster.or rich alum influencing the decision…
2) I am not for or against hiring Tech folks…
3) I am with you on the fact that we need to be successful… The process of finding a coach will I hope clearly identify that person….whomever he is !!
Thanks

My vote, if I had one: Craig Neal. (As much as I love and respect Mark Price and can see why lot of people would hire him as a thank you for what he has done, I just did not see a progression from him that indicated he wanted to be a head coach. He’s a fine human being, family man, GT family member and does not have to prove himself to anyone to be happy.) Coach Neal has the smarts to surround himself with good poeple and command respect based on his career steps.
Otherwise, I’d be content with Mooney, or Stevens, or Gregory.

Trending up: Donnie Tyndall. Well coached team. Seemed to have fun playing.
In 2009 – Morehead State Donnie Tyndall $155,000 $27,500 $182,500 annual total income
Trending down; Chris Mooney. Team looks like they are bored at times or something. Maybe they will wake up in the 2nd half.

I attended GT between 85-90………..I am a HUGE fan of Mark Price as a basketball player and as a person. You simply cannot go wrong with an intelligent, hgh character person like Mark Price!
I am also impressed with Craig Neal as a player, person and he has proven to be a solid assistant coach.
These guys had HUGE success together at GT before. The combination as coaches could be STELLAR!

Regarding Mooney and the Princeton offense, winning will put fans in the seats at the new Thriller Dome. Under Mooney, little old Richmond has gone 8-3 in its past 11 against major programs (Purdue, Vandy this year, Florida, Missouri and Mississippi State last year). Would you rather be undisciplined and inconsistent, or run a version of the Princeton offense, play intense defense and make the NCAA tourney?
No matter if Neal, Mooney, Grant or someone else, the fan base will have to be a little patient as the new coach implements his system. Some nice pieces are in place.
(Regarding Fogler – his 1998 third-seeded South Carolina team was shocked by… No. 14 Richmond and John Beilein)

There is a reason why Radakovich is the AD, and all of the Tech fans, alums,
and former players are not.
He is a better decision maker
Mike Woodson ?? Excuse me while I go puke up my dinner.
There is a definite reason why a program like Duke is a consistent winner year after year.
All Tech fans (and pundits) need to STHU and let Radakovich do his job.

The anticipation of an announcement of our next coach was too much to take so I had to consult the all knowing Sister Doreen of Phenix City, AL
She read the tea leaves and told me this:
Tubby is still out there for Tech and NC State. Tennessee has dibs on Donnie Tyndall and will be firing Pearl. Shaka Smart will look at NC State but wants to go to a SEC school. NC State will be throwing a lot of $$ at Mooney and talking to Tubby.
Tommy Amaker has already been sniffing around for Tech job. Mooney has showed interest indirectly but will give NC State the nod because he was not Tech’s number 1 choice.
And the number 1 choice for Tech: Brad Stevens – AND – he will tell Tech NO and we will be screwed because we put all of our eggs in Steven’s basket.
I asked for my money back…. she laughed and told me for another 30$ she would tell me what Tech’s recruits would sign next year.

The Horn hire will end up to be very good. Dave Odom left Horn nothing but Sam Muldrow and Devin Downey. He’s had to kick two very good Odom recruited players off the team. They were one of the youngest teams in America last year and it showed. He has two blue chippers coming in next year plus Murphy Holloway from Ol’ Miss. This hire will work out.

NOT Woodson. I was constantly frustrated with the player evaluation and style of play he had with the Hawks. Reminded me too much of Hewitt. “Long athletic guys”, but you trade superior lateral quickness when you get long. Little pure point guards break us down and cause open shots for their team. We don’t need another coach who drafts/recruits guys who could all arguably be forwards.

Gailey was fired for one simple reason: zero wins in five chances vs Uga. He did have a few big wins but you have to beat the archrival at least once.
Doesn’t Drew need to find out where his wife is, Anderson, where his money is and Steppe, where his brain is?
Will any of those three buy season tickets?
If not, they should butt out.

The new coach’s salary will not be affected?
With Gailey still getting paid until Jan 2012 and Hewitt just getting started, what will be affected is the amount we flush down the toilet each year that could be spent on something else.
Thanks to Dave Braine, we have millions going to people who no longer have to earn it.

Eddie Fogler has a very keen basketball mind. His biggest drawback as a college head coach was his inability to deal with certain members of the press. He won an SEC championship at South Carolina. He was named national Coach of the Year at both Vanderbilt and South Carolina. The AD at South Carolina ran him off because he wouldn’t be a brown nose. He was building a really good program when he was let go.

I don’t think Stevens is going anywhere there is a current opening. I literally think it would have to be a top 4 or 5 program to even tempt him. Butler has him financially set and locked up for a long time and even if the bottom fell out for him, he could coast for a decade on the good will he’s built up at Butler.

Hire Mooney. I could get behind most of the major candidates mentioned for the job: Marshall, Neal, Turgeon, Stallings, et al, as long as the next coach does not resemble Hewitt in coaching style or p.r. awareness.

Unlike those who claim to have inside-stone-cold-lock information on the first choice, next coach, etc., I haven’t got a clue. I do think that Neal or Price (both of whom I like) are completely out of the mix. And I don’t believe the NC State opening impacts our search much at all. Two different programs looking for two different kinds of coaches. Both are quality positions, but State has the money and need to make a big splash.
