Allen does well at NFL Combine

Anthony Allen may have helped himself at the NFL Combine.

Allen, was among the top performers in all seven of the physical competitions, topped by having the highest vertical jump (41.5 inches).

He was third in the 20-yard shuttle (4.06 seconds), fifth in the three-cone drill (6.79 seconds), sixth in the 60-yard shuttle (11.46 seconds) and broad jump (10 feet) and seventh in the bench (225 pounds 24 times). Thirty-nine running backs attended the Combine.

On his first attempt, he ran the all-important 40-yard dash in 4.54 seconds. However, he wasn’t included among the top-15 performers in the category later listed on nflnetwork.com. The analysts said they were impressed with his time, saying he moved well for a big man. He’s listed on combine site as weighing 228 pounds.

The question mark about Allen is how will he fare in a more traditional offense than the option offense Tech runs. Allen rushed 1,843 yards and 12 touchdowns in two seasons at Tech. He also rushed for 1,102 yards in his first two collegiate seasons in a spread offense at Louisville.

He was projected as a mid- to late-round selection in NFL Draft. It’ll be interesting to see if his performance in Indianapolis improves his stock.

Two more Tech players — cornerback Mario Butler and safety Jerrard Tarrant — will begin their combine experience Monday.

Anthony was impressive today. He looked extremely focused & performed very well. Don’t know much about him, but it appears that which ever teams selects him will be getting a quality player/guy.

I didn’t need the combine to tell me Ant can play. I was, however, surprised at his 40 time.

George,

An ACC RB that runs a 4.54 looks like a 4.35 against ACC competition.

Here we go with the SEC ACC crap…none of that matters in the NFL…Ive never heard Matt Ryan say “Well I had a good game throwing to my Divison II reciever Roddy White today and that sack by SEC D Linemen John Abraham sealed it up for us”….all the scouts look at is if you can play the game hard on Sundays and go out and protect the teams image so all of you “SEC rules” people can take that crap back to the college section where it belongs thank you very much!

a runner is a runner. stupid to equate running in an option offense as any different than another style. and he did run in the spread. it’’s all the same. qb hands the ball off. the question is how hard are you to bring down, how quick are you and are you smart enough to find the holes.

Georgia Tech has lost 5 of their last 6 football games, only beating Duke.

Georgia Tech only graduates 43% of their football players….. Not even Josh Nesbitt graduated.

Real original Paul’s Johnson. I think I have seen this same post about fifty times now. I actually went to the TECH graduation ceremony in December and watched approximately twenty past and present football players obtain their degrees. The football team has actually surpassed the overall student body percentage as of late. And someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the ACC had more Pro Bowl participants than any other conference this past year.

Nice to see that Allen went to the combine prepared and had a good showing. He is really talented and somebody will get a steal in the 3rd or 4th round.

Anthony Allen is a determined and an articulate student/athlete who will do well in the NFL. The so called NFL experts amaze me each year with their predetermined concepts of what will make an NFL player. Anthony is an athlete with strength, size, speed and he is coachable, which means he will only get better with the proper training. He has experience as a “B” back in Tech’s system, which means he is already tough as nails, getting hit on every play. He played in a different system at Louisville with positive results too. He can catch the ball and he can score touchdowns. Some team is going to get a bargain, but hopefully Anthony can be moving up in ranking by the time the draft comes around.

If AA would cut his hair I bet he would run a 4:45 40.

But seriously, good luck to AA in the NFL, seems like a nice guy from the interviews I’ve seen. He really started running hard toward the end of the season, hate to see him go.

Larry,
You really need to check the combine stats. C. Johnson ACC holds the record and the ACC has as many if not more players place in the top 15 every year compared to the SEC.

I’m curious about Nesbitt also. Nez per se was a brave cube who wasn’t afraid to run right into defenders, and seemed to enjoy the contact, and CPJ allowed all of it. I think if he had time to find receivers via a shotgun, which CPJ did not allow, his passing would improve from just per se. Allen was a standard fullback for Tech that gradually increased in ability like the standard ones do. When he first played for Tech he was not effective.

I think every year away from Gailey’s influence and in camp with Johnson helps these guys. Choice thought surprising the NFL at Dallas, also lack the common sense that was picked up by the entire nation when he asked for that Vick autograph. Dyer was a fringe player though be it with the Pittsburgh Steelers, one of the best running teams in football. Allen is the total package. Bigger that either of the previous and faster. This kid is tough you can win games with tough kids with talent. Someone will get a steal taking him.

The combine is over-rated and only good for a very general measure of physical parameters. That being said, good for Anthony and I wish him the best of luck. He certainly has the heart and drive to do well and to make an NFL squad this year.

As the ACC tournament looms and Hewitt’s swan song beckons, the prospect of Hewitt joining the ranks of the unemployed is somehow offset by the knowledge that while 10% of the population languishes jobless and near poverty, this sorry excuse for a human being is making a million and a half a year for five years of continued doing nothing.

ain’t it funny how all the Kentucky people were RIGHT about Tubby?

Minnesota has had their load of him and it sure didn’t take 10 years this time.

Sped things up not having Pitino’s leftovers for the first 2 years.

Tech would be much better off with someone other than Tubby.
