Tech picks up another football signee

Jimmie Kitchen, a former standout at Lithonia, signed a letter of intent with Georgia Tech. He is the team’s 23rd signee.
According to jacketsonline.com, Kitchen was going to be in Auburn’s 2009 class, but there were questions about his academic eligibility.
He then signed with Tennessee State, but the NCAA Clearinghouse had an issue with an online English class he took. He never enrolled.
He began working to improve his transcript and the Clearinghouse recently cleared him.
Tech assistant Joe Speed was recruiting some other players when a coach suggested he look at Kitchens, a 265-pound defensive end.
Kitchen visited Tech, was offered and signed.
He will add more depth to Tech’s defensive line. He is the first signee in the class who is a defensive lineman.

You got to like his dedication to stick with it to achieve what I assume is a dream to play college football. But if this was Richt giving him his 3rd chance after not getting eligible at Auburn ( w/their high standards lol and Tenn state) the tech fans would be laughing their butts off. They’d also be trying to point out how high there entrance requirements are. Although getting into the management program especially for athletes is not that high.

Instead of some of your morons recognizing this young man stepped back and put his head to the grindstone academically so diligently that he cleared all of the hurdles he was facing even being considered for a smaller program, much less one of the major conference programs (there were several SEC hot on Jimmie’s trail after he finally qualified), you find a reason to mock him.

For the record, what Jimmie just proved is that he has the drive, determination, and self discipline most kids lack coming out of high school. Jimmie realized he had the ability to play in big-time programs but hadn’t put forth the same effort in the classroom and did something about it.

Jimmie’s a young man from a terrific family and is a tremendous addition to this year’s incoming class. I think all Jacket fans will enjoy watching Jimmie on Grant Field and spending time with his family and friends in Bobby Dodd Stadium.

why is it that when tech signs an idiot it is considered a good thing, as in the kid is finally realizing his academic potential, but when any other school does it, that school has “low standards” and is a “football factory”?

Can’t have it both ways, techies. Obviously you can admit low quality students, Mr. Kitchens has proven that. So that argument is out the window. Maybe the issue is that nobody wants to go to your school. Ever thought of that? The blue-chippers can get the equivalent of a “History of Technology” degree at a more attractive locale.

Here’s the link:
http://blogs.ajc.com/georgia-tech-sports/2011/02/24/tech-picks-up-another-football-signee/?cp=1#comment-79990

Here’s the main part of the article:

Georgia Tech’s football players had the nation’s best average SAT score, 1028 of a possible 1600, and best average high school GPA, 3.39 of a possible 4.0 in the core curriculum. But Tech’s football players still scored 315 SAT points lower on average than their classmates.

At the University of Georgia, the average football SAT was 949, which is 239 points behind the average for an undergraduate student at Georgia — and 79 points behind Tech’s football average. The Bulldogs’ average high school GPA was 2.77, or 45th out of 53 teams for which football GPAs were available. Their SAT average ranked them 22nd.

Rest assured, Mongrel Nation, it is still a prouder and more noble thing to have graduated from Georgia Tech in any field be it a science, engineering, design, architecture or, yes, even Management than to have followed the path of least resistence through places like Athens, Tuscaloosa, Knoxville, Columbia, Tallahassee, etc.

We all know it works differently for athletes. For the average student, it is quite a feat being accepted to Tech. The REAL doozy, however, is graduating. Going to Tech or cheering for Tech is something Dawgs will bark about all your life, but if you make it all the way through Georgia Tech and come out on the other side with a degree you never have to listen to them again.

More delusional drivel from the CPJ kool-aid drinkers!

Something is very strange about this SA.

If he were just one class shy of the NCAA Clearinghouse OK’n him to play, then WHY didn’t he just take that one English Class in summer School and then Start his career back in Fall 2010; there’s no need to not play FB for what will be 21 months by the time he gets to GT over one tiny little class.

He could have played at a Hargrave type of school and continued on the FB field w/o losing any eligibility, so WHY would he suit around for one FULL YR. over just one class?

BTW, all the smug, elite GT types (not me I’m a realistic GT alum) that pokes fun at the factories over SAs taking online courses, GT has just taken in this SA that has taken an online course, and if he has taken the one that the NCAA disallowed, then it is likely that he was taken more online courses.

Also those comments above are bogus as hell, if he wasn’t able to play at Auburn for Academic Reasons, then Tenn. St. is also an NCAA School, so that’s why the clearinghouse dinged him there also.

In summary there’s a good reason he was headed to TENN ST.

The GT SID Dept. is trying to spin this as if GT “stole” an Auburn recruit, when it is very clear that this is not a case of that.

Not being cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse has nothing to do with grades. It has to do with a specific set of courses that you have to take and pass to meet minimum requirements. Apparently one of the courses he took on line did not get accepted so he didn’t meet the
Clearing House requirements. You can have a 4.0 and perfect SAT score and if you are missing one of the classes required you don’t pass the Clearing House. He made a mistake and corrected it. I’m sure he had the grades and SAT scores to get into Tech and be successful, otherwise why would the coaches bring him in knowing he is going to have academic problems. DoubledU, you belittle your own program by saying what you said. If all a degee in turf management qualifies you for is to be a grounds keeper, then obviously the degree isn’t worth much. Most of the actual grounds keepers didn’t go to school anywhere. Anyone who actually gets a degree in turf management does a helluva lot more than watering and cutting grass. I know…I know. Tech might not have the arrests UGA has but, we’re not doing any better than UGA at sports. I think the best rising program in the state might be Georgia Southern. Hell, UGA fans should be happy they don’t have a Paul Hewitt as coach on any team. Have you looked at his contract. We also had a terrible AD…Dave Braine. He has screw GT for a while. Kitchens’ high school coach Marcus Yelks explains his former defensive ends’ long strange trip.

“Jimmie was a 2010 graduate and he had a lot of big time D-1 schools recruiting him at the time, but they all backed off around December when it looked like he wasn’t going to qualify,” Yelks said. “Eventually he ended up signing with Tennessee State after he improved his SAT score, but he never enrolled. The clearinghouse had a problem with one of his English classes that he originally failed and took again online. They threw out that class and he had to retake it, but he did not have time to get it done so he never started classes at Tennessee State. He came home took care of that English class and improved some of his other academics and got himself eligible for 2011.”

Key = “He came home took care of that English class and improved some of his other academics and got himself eligible for 2011″

He impoved his academics to get to Tech. Tech did not accept him at the same level he could not get into Auburn, his academic IMPROVED.
Same thing John Jenkins did to get into UGA, happens all the time. Sounds like Jimmie Kitchens took a better route, he still has 5 years, 4 playing of Div 1 football, Jenkins only has 2.

I have two reasons 1) you might be seeing STUDENTS…most college students drive beaters or 2) it may just be that TECH has more non-student fans than people think! We ARE still an old Southern university and were at one time the athletic power in the Southeast. I’ve heard entire families in South GA still root for Tech as a tradition – ask people in Macon, Savannah and Augusta about that. Plenty of GT rednecks near those locales.

Tech just signed a player that was refused admission at Auburn, Tennessee Tech, and Ted’s Bartending and Taxidermy School. Believe me, you would be welcome as good money at Tech.

No, Dawgy, it is true. The Tech football team was cited for having the highest SAT of any school in the nation. It wasn’t really talked about a lot because it didn’t excite our fans a lot. We already knew we were near the top for years. It was interesting, though, that we topped Duke for at least one year. Everyone likes to talk sports all the time.
Most Georgians don’t realize what Tech achieves academically each year. We sure can’t say the same about the basketball team.

Yet one more clear example

Shouda been in AU class of 09? How old is this kid? 43?

His grades suggest that he is not GT material BUT GT signs him anyway.

Another clear example of the GT double standard regarding jocks.

About those HIGHEST SAT scores in the nation for the football team, might want to check those again GT faithful. That report was from 2008 and reflective of entering freshmen for the class of 2007. That also was a one year phenomenon. The report didn’t reference if the average included ‘walk-ons’ or was restricted to only those entering on athletic scholarship. You may want to check again and see how you stack up against Vandy, Duke, Stanford on an average over a four year period rather than selecting the one year in which you topped the list.

It is rather pathetic how some of you “preach” about the lofty requirements to enter GT as athletes, those requirements are generally true for the incoming students however are not applicable to “athletes”. As witnessed by this signing, GT admits athletes who qualify on the lower end of the NCAA eligibility guidelines and are certified as eligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse, just like Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, S Carolina, Georgia, N C State, Tennessee, Mississippi St, you are no different. This young man is Exhibit A, aka Proof.

You Tech whiners are hysterical. You have a WAY overstated opinion of your above average school. Duke wins natl titles in all sports except football and it’s a helluva lot harder to get into Duke than Tech.

Duke grad,
You might want to check the special admit rate for your basketball team.

Ramblin Man, you are missing the point. You Tech crybabies claim that it is absolutely impossible for you to field an elite football team like the “football factories” because of your supposed academic requirements. You stick your noses up in the air and claim that letting in these dumb sub-human football players will lessen the value of your degree. Well, things like Duke basketball conclusively prove that you are completely full of s**t. The value of a Duke degree is not lessened because they specially admit basketball players. Moreover, guys like Jimmie Kitchen prove that all these lofty academic requirements that you talk out your azz about are nothing more than empty talk.

Let’s face it Tech fans. You’re just a bunch of sore loser crybabies looking for an excuse. That is the bottom line. You are the biggest effing joke in all of sports fandom.

Good day.

Which part of the article did you not understand? Apparently, this kid got his act together…got offered a chance at bettering himself via a football career at Tech. I don’t believe that Tech is the toughest school to get into…but, it’s one of the toughest schools to get into in the country. Our athletes might not be the brightest students on campus, but they WILL have to pass calculus…a BIT more difficult than passing a class that have questions on it’s final exam like, “If a person shoots and make a THREE point basket…how many points does that person get credit for?”!

pup fans, I understand your frustration in life…ALL those expectations every year…1980 WAS a LONG time ago!
