Can Tech make it back to the NCAAs? Wait, read on

Some have speculated that the only way Georgia Tech’s Paul Hewitt will remain head coach is if the Yellow Jackets make it back to the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive year.

With an 11-15 record and an RPI that is so low I’m not even going to bother looking it up, Tech isn’t going to make it in as an at-large.

So, they are going to have to win the ACC tournament and with it, the automatic bid.

“Doug, are you nuts?” you are saying to yourself right now.

That’s neither here nor there.

Yes, the Jackets have won just three conference games and are 11th in the 12-team league with four games remaining.  Yes, they have have lost their past six games in the ACC, falling behind in most by gruesome margins.

But what’s life without hope?

Let’s assume that the standings don’t change much before the ACC tourney begins on March 10 in Greensboro.

The Yellow Jackets would likely open with either Maryland or Boston College. They’ve already lost to both those teams, but the losses were close games. So, it’s not beyond reason that Tech can win its opener.

Now, if things stay the same, Tech would face Florida State in the next round. Even without Chris Singleton, taking on the tallish Seminoles is not a good matchup for the smallish Jackets. But FSU is within a spear’s throw of North Carolina for second place. So, if the Seminoles can pass them, that could benefit the Jackets.

Certainly you remember how badly the Jackets thumped the Tar Heels at Alexander Memorial Coliseum?

So, recent results aside, who’s to say it can’t happen again?

As long as Tech isn’t matched up against FSU in the next round, Tech could defeat the other possibilities. FSU had issues with Miami and looked decent against Virginia in wins earlier this season.

Boom, Tech is in the championship game, where it will likely play Duke.

After watching how badly the Blue Devils took it to the Jackets on the boards in the first half on Sunday, I wouldn’t say I’m at call confident Tech can win that game.

But, as Sheldon Cooper likes to say, what’s life without whimsy?

Can it happen, sure?

Will it happen, that’s for you to say.

It wouldn’t be worth another year of Hewitt even if we could. If he stays another year, there will be real damage done to the program. It’s past time for both Tech and Hewitt for this to end.

This is toungue-in-cheek, right? Surely you’re not serious.

The last thing this “program” needs is a fluke run through the ACC tournament. As bad as this year has been, the only thing that would make it worse is the illusion of success, leading to more Paul Hewitt. He’s got to go…it’s the ONLY positive thing that can come from this season. Yeah, it’s no fun pulling for your team to lose, but I honestly believe losses right now are crucial to the teams future success.

Notify Hewitt that his contract is not being renewed prior to the March dead line. Continue to pay him as a coach (not the coach) of the team. Within the contract, prohibit him from performing any functions outside of GT basketball. Hire another coach (the coach). Meanwhile, have Hewitt sit at home and wait for further instructions. As his value begins to erode in a non-viable mode, he will negotiate a settlement.

This way the UGA faithful will be able to post absurd anti-GT blog posts and he can laugh at GT fans when he hangs out with his buddies from UGA.

I simply cannot imagine that there are no GT graduates (or even an unbiased journalist from somewhere other than UGA) who can secure a job at the AJC to cover GT sports……..oh wait, I almost forgot the AJC is run by UGA lovers/GT haters and they WANT the GT coverage conducted by someone who in all reality does not like GT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This story is worse than the Iran hostage story under the Carter administration. Hewitt has us held hostage ,though in our story, the number of hostage are dissipating as the days turn to weeks and weeks to months. Watching College of Charleston rip another huge win last night and seeing they signed maybe the best player ever signed in the Southern Conference for next year as we sit in still seas with this bird wrapped around our neck only make this cruel and unusual punishment of our dull basketball existence more real. To watch the seniors gather on the home court in Charleston for their last game, all Bobby recruits, was like a homeless person watching a happy family celebrate Christmas from some outside window peering from the cold into a fire warmed house. To hear the announcer refer to our namesake as Bobby, no longer our Bobby but their Bobby was like getting a bounced check back in the mail. When WC Fields got mad at his butler he would hold him down and take out the man’s false teeth then order a steak and make the poor man watch him eat it. I don’t know how we got drafted into the wrong army Bobby but we are pulling for ya, painful as it may be you go Bobby.

GT has a chance..I only see maybe 2 teams with more talent than GT..NC,FSU(maybe)..If the refs let GT play they will be ok..But I think Duke wins the ACC his year, it has already been decided…..Last year GT made a run when all of you southern republicans thought we were dead…In the championship game the refs said enough is enough and put Singler on the line more than the whole GT team, thats another story…..But the rumor mill has already started and Hewitt will have a chance to get another great job in the offsesaon…Maybe better than the St johns job..just watch..Oh yeah did anyone of notice that once coach k got a tech on a clear foul the game went sour? or did any one see when Shump was getting the crap knocked out of him by Nolan Smith and a turnover happened, Shump then tried to apply heavy pressure on Smith like he did him but as usual the refs blew the whistle…The announcer said this “DO NOT TRY TO PLAY DUKE GAME”..That means Duke can grab and hold, YOU CANT!….me and my wife ( a GT alum) both lol..She asked me why does the AJC and gt fans allow this..I could not answer that ?..I bet if GT hires a white coach you guys will complain then…If St Johns offered this man a job,and i repeat st johns is a wAYYYYYYYY better job than Gt , the man can coach..Mark bradley is a idiot look at this following the ohio state game….

“A great team would have beaten Ohio State on Sunday. As strange as it sounds, there was a clear imbalance of talent between the No. 2 seed and the No. 10. Tech had the three best big men this day, and yet Gani Lawal and Derrick Favors got called for the fouls that changed the game. Jacket fans will complain forever about the officiating, but here’s the thing: With no Ohio State post presence to defend, Tech’s post players still fouled. How? Why?”
This is the problem with NCAA basketball..the REFS DECIDE THE GAME…

@doug
can you please send a link to the article about Lawai and Favors hating the ACC refs..check this out in 2004

“In Georgia Tech’s 69-64 loss to Duke in the title game at the MCI Center, Duke guard J.J. Redick was sent to the foul line with 24 seconds left after Tech’s Jarrett Jack was called for a foul by official Larry Rose that television replays indicate never occurred.

“If you have two eyes and they work well, you should be able to see that,” Hewitt said on the radio Monday. “These types of mistakes can’t be tolerated. It’s wrong. Absolutely wrong.”

The foul shots gave Duke a three-point lead over Georgia Tech. ESPN broadcasters Dick Vitale and Mike Patrick discussed the call numerous times and basketball analyst Rick Majerus said on the air that there should have been an intentional foul called instead on Redick for grabbing a Tech player’s jersey on the inbounds play.”

Did you notice in the Duke game the announcer said Teams should not try to play Duke “Hard nose d”..He said “DONT PLAY DUKE’s GAME”..My wife a GT alum looked at me and shook her head…nolan Smith ( who will be a complete bust in the NBa) was guarding shumpert, Well, he was beating the hell out of him and a turnover happened..The next possesion Shump tried to play Smith close but the ref blew the whistle..so basically Duke can grab and hold and you cannot..Do you think if GT hires a white coach this will stop?

Doug, what a homer you are. It must be sad to have to write blogs for Ga.Tech athletics. You tried really hard to put a positive spin on the just completed football recruiting class at Tech. You had every 4 star recruit that visited Tech falling in love with Turkey neck and his program. Too bad for you that none of them cared to commit to that sinking high school program on the flats. Now you are trying to write something positive about the second worst coach in the ACC and that would be Hewitt. Tech has the worst coached basketball team in the country, not just the ACC. If you can’t win 50% of your conference games in that pathetic conference this year, then you are truely a bad team. The ACC is pathetic in basketball this season. Tech fans should be happy that you have probably the worst Athletic Director in the ACC as well. He hires Turkey neck from the Naval Academy and watches him have a losing record in the worst conference in college football, and now he has to watch the worst coach in college basketball have a losing record in the worst conference in college basketball this season. Think you homer Doug should write about baseball. OPPS!! Did tech get another football committment from a 2 star recruit that it stole from Ga.State? Should make Doug the homer’s next blog: Turkeyneck reels in big fish. CPJ steals #85 rated player in Ga. from Bill Curry.!!!

If K gets the benefit of some calls, it’s because he’s earned it with his body of work. I’m not exactly sure I would want to make the NCAA tournament at this point. We would probably be a 13 seed and would have very little chance of getting through the first round. I would rather there be more pressure on cutting Hewitt loose. A miracle NCAA bid might give DRad an excuse to keep him.

Doug, This is not even a story. Can’t believe you put this much time into it. Tech is done and has been for years. This one and done joke of a program needs an overhaul. There is no way this team could muster enough focus to play 40 minutes much less win an ACC tournament.

Big Ol Stinger was saying Coach K gets the benefit of the doubt because he’s got the rings. It’s right there in the lines you quoted. Hewitt, on the other hand, has one fluke run through the tourney. Maybe you should work on your reading comprehension instead of knee-jerk blaming people of racism.

And there were some calls the Duke faithful weren’t too happy about either. The other point Big Ol Stinger is that, regardless of the officiating, Tech fell apart in the second half. You don’t get blown out because of officiating, especially when your key players don’t even foul out.

Hewitt (and Tech basketball) are floundering out there. If you want to keep supporting him, that’s fine, but most of us are tired of his excuses.

Also, the one commentator was saying teams shouldn’t get caught up in trying to out-physical Duke. He wasn’t saying don’t play tough defense against Duke. It is possible to play tough defense without being extremely physical. He was just saying that you shouldn’t let Duke dictate the style of play, which is actually a pretty common commentary, regardless of who’s playing.

However, the other commentator then pointed out that physical defense is part of Hewitt’s style.

I’ve noticed several times that the commentators don’t seem to know much about Tech basketball that doesn’t come straight off their stat sheets or from their interviews before games. I honestly think the only Tech basketball games they watch are the ones they cover.
