Quotes after Tech’s loss at Duke

Some quotes following Georgia Tech’s loss to Duke on Sunday, courtesy of the Blue Devils’ sports information department:

Georgia Tech Head Coach Paul Hewitt

Opening Statement:

“Got off to a pretty good start. Did some of the things that we wanted to do: try to score in transition; if we didn’t have anything in transition, use the clock a little bit and space the floor out. I thought we did a pretty decent job, but the one thing we didn’t do for the entire first half, which was a number two priority behind stopping from three, was defensive rebounding. They had six in the second chance points, which was something, they feast on that. They get second shots, get offensive rebounds and kick them out for threes or drive them up too easy. That was tough to overcome.”

On satisfaction with the 3-point defense:

“Yeah. I wasn’t satisfied with the rebounding because the rebounds led to some of the threes they got. I think they were 2-for-6 in the first half, excuse me, 4-for-10 in the first half, and I’m going to guess three of them were from inside-outs off the offensive rebound, which is hard to defend.”

On defending Nolan Smith and Shumpert getting into foul trouble:

“In the second half he just got going. I thought in the first half, I really think it was our inability. We gave up 10 offensive rebounds in the first half and that might change the game a little bit. I’m not sure the foul trouble had much to do with that difference. He’s [Nolan Smith] a great player. He’s having a great year. More than likely the player of the year in the league. He’s got a chance to do something that’s never been done in this league and that’s a pretty big statement to say that something’s never been done in a positive way.”

Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski

Opening Statement:

“I was pleased with our performance tonight. Georgia Tech is always a difficult game, especially with [Iman] Shumpert and [Glen] Rice. They’re two of the better players in the league. They started a little bit different line up. They didn’t start their two bigs and the game plan we had was not appropriate defensively for the team we were playing against. We put our guys in positions that weren’t very good. [It] got us scattered. We changed it after a few minutes. Once we settled down [and] played our regular defense, I thought we played really well defensively. [Tyler] Thornton was a huge plus for us. The offensive rebounding in the first half and then our defense … we got nine fouls, and I’m not saying they weren’t fouls, well most of them, we were fouling too much and then we started just playing very disciplined defense. We got Nolan [Smith] in there with two fouls and he played about four minutes without getting a third. We ended the half in really a beautiful manner. I thought it was outstanding the way we ended the half. In the second half, it carried over. We continued to play well. We didn’t turn it over very much. Eighteen and 10 on assists and turnovers, but Thornton gave us just a really huge boost.”

On adjustments made at timeout before half:

“We just wanted to get a two-for-one and we wanted to make sure Nolan did not foul. Tyler [Thornton] made a play on his own there. His defense of [Iman] Shumpert was very good, so that kept Nolan out of foul trouble even in the second half. We just executed really well. It was really good basketball, those last few minutes, for us, of the first half.”

On game plan heading into tonight:

“Going into the game, their two guys averaged taking 25 shots apiece. They were taking almost all their shots. When they were in different spots, we wanted to make sure we were running people at them. When they have two big guys in the game, you can do that and not give up threes, but when they have four perimeter guys in, it’s just not a good strategy. [Maurice] Miller got open. [Lance] Storrs got open. We got spread out too much and were reaching and grabbing. We needed to get back to playing a different way, the way we normally play.”

On the national rankings:

“After Kyrie got hurt, we were just No. 1 for a long time because we didn’t lose. That’s just the nature of the polls. I never felt we were the No. 1 team in the country after that. I did when [Kyrie] was with us. I think we’re a good team and we just got to keep winning. Whatever happens in that, with seeding and all that will just work out. We just need to take care of our own business on getting better. It’s the time of the year where people are desperate. You’re playing desperate people sometimes. The teams that are ranked high all get great shots from everyone. I do think that can make you better before going into the tournament. I’m not surprised at all these games. We play Temple on Wednesday; they’re top-25 and go to Blacksburg on Saturday. Those are going to be really difficult games for us, but that’s good. We shouldn’t worry about what it does in the polls. The conference race we should be concerned about. We want to finish well in the conference race.”

On Nolan Smith:

“He keeps getting better. [Brian] Zoubek got better. You get better if you want to get better. He wants to get better. The fact that he’s one of two leaders, he understands this responsibility of showing up at a high level every game. I’m sure that he was excited about matching up with [Iman] Shumpert. We believe Shumpert is as talented as any guard in our league. He’s done well; he’s been very good. That gets you going, too. It brings out more in you. Nolan’s had an incredible year. I never talk about player of the year, but it’s not even close in our conference. This kid nationally has got to be recognized. He’s been consistent even with Kyrie and then Kyrie goes down and that’s a big load. I don’t think anyone in the country has had that change and especially not the preseason and the first part of the season to prepare for your role. He just, ‘Ok I’ll be Spider man. I’ll sing the lead. I’ll take all those.’ I think it’s one of the best performances in a long time in our league, especially when you consider those things.”

On the team’s improvement:

“The big guys keep getting better. Mason [Plumlee]and Ryan [Kelly] had really good games. Our defense has been pretty solid. We’ve been a very good defensive team. And we’re rebounding well. Whenever we take care of the ball like we did tonight, 18 and 10, then we’ve played pretty well. We still win sometimes when we get 10 and 15, but it taxes your defense. When we don’t turn it over, then they have to come against a good set defense. That’s still our staple and has been our staple for 31 years.”

Duke Sophomore Seth Curry

On what Duke did in the second half:

“I think we just buckled down and stopped fouling really. At the beginning of the game, we were giving them easy buckets on the free throw line. Once we stopped that, they weren’t able to score easily and we were able to rebound the ball and get out and run.”

On Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s technical foul in the first half:

“I think it really fired us up. It’s not something you see often, so it means Coach is really fighting for us, and we try to go out there and fight for him too.”

On the play of Nolan Smith:

“We try not to take it for granted, a guy like that just bringing it every night, giving us big points, rebounds, whatever it is – he does it for us. It’s great to watch a guy that’s having a great season, a senior who leads by example and we just try to follow.”

Duke Senior Nolan Smith

On the physical play:

“Knowing that you’re going to get contact, you just try and finish and just be strong.”

On the upcoming non-conference matchup with Temple:

“It’s good for us. We always use [games like this] to simulate the [NCAA] Tournament, playing a team that’s going to be a high seed in the Tournament. They’re a top 25 team, and it’s going to help us stay focused. We can’t lose focus going out of conference. We’ve got to stay focused and get ready for them. It’s going to be a big-time game.”

On whether the team cares about being ranked No. 1:

“Not at all. I think for this team, we just to continue getting better and keep winning basketball games. Being number one right now doesn’t matter at all. Last year’s team, we weren’t number one until the end. If we get it, it’s cool but we’re not worried about it.”

Duke Senior Kyle Singler

“It was a tight game, especially in the first half early and we couldn’t build a lead. Then early in the second half, we were able to get stops and knock down a couple of shots and then we started building that lead.”

On his show of emotion in the first half after Nolan Smith’s three:

“We were kind of in a rut. It’s that time of the year when basketball is getting a little bit more exciting, and you kind of have to stretch yourself a little bit. I think that’s what happened.”

On his approach to this game after a frustrating game against Virginia:

“I tried to approach it just like any other game. I really didn’t think about it much actually, and I thought that really helped because coming off that game, it really was a frustrating game to play. But in this game, I thought I did a good job of not focusing on it and just playing.”

Yawn, we agree on your last statement. And don’t hope you are wrong, you are wrong…at least about the contract. Whether DRad actually fires him is anybody’s guess, but if he doesn’t, then his job may be on the line too.

I think HewittFan is really Phewitt’s mother. Only a moron or his mother would actually write that we lost due to officiating last night. 3 -15 from the 3 pt line? > 30% in field goals? And we lose because the pushed off once or twice? Please, when you learn the game of basketball, then you can comment, HewittFan. Otherwise you just make yourself look dumber than you are. Go back to your job cleaning tables.

We need to dump Hewitt. Maybe our former point guard who just got arrested needs a job.

ACCHoopster, I indicated that the fouls (lack of) had little affect on the game.
However, if you google “duke gets all the calls” you will find several incidents pro and con on the subject. Up here it is fun to watch K do his “thing” almost every game…get after the refs…and it usually has the desired results…less dook fouls called.

Yawn and Supersize,

Supersize is right about the contract. There is an auto roll over and he has to be notified of his firing by March 15, whether they disclose that info to the public is another thing. As to the “hope DRad fires him” bit, Hewitt is donezo after the last game. Alumni chatter isn’t even on raising funds to remove him because it’s already been done a couple times over. We have the money. Behind the scenes, they are working on a pool of prospective new coaches. A lot of alumni want Price, my bet is that doesn’t happen. But Hewitt is a done deal. He’s out of here. DRad is a great AD dealing with the problems he was given from Braine. We had to do one thing at a time, and Chan’s payout ends this year or the next.

Definition of insanity……

Just add expecting Hewitt to have a team prepared….or making adjustments….or coaching fundamentals…….or, well, you get the picture.

The other is continuing to pay this guy. DRad – do your job on or before D-day in March and you will have the Jacket Nation back in your corner. If not, you are next.

Sounds like things are falling apart for the institute’s athletic programs. I guess the only saving grace for drad is that the acc is so athletically inferior that even tech should be competative.

donezo is right, it’s over. And look at my post in the Chattanooga blog as to why it didn’t happen 2 or 3 years ago.
Next year we will have a new coach and the team will hopefully be well prepared to deal with what is going to be a difficult year just because we play the entire season off campus. Even if Shumpert decides not to come back for his Sr season there is plenty of talent to compete in the ACC.
Come Fall of 2012 the new Thrillerdome @ McCamish Center will be rocking!

And as I said before, let’s tone down the hatred against Hewitt and just let him ride off. Leave the crazy hatred to the Alabama and SEC folks. They’ve got it down to a science.

Hewitt turns down St. John’s

By Andy Katz
Georgia Tech’s Paul Hewitt turned down an offer to coach St. John’s, telling university officials Thursday he will remain with the Yellow Jackets after conferring with his family about its desire to stay in Atlanta.

People in Georgia are the only people who say Hewitt can not coach..No top name coach is coming to the ACC..You guys will be lucky if the next coach can at least get to the NCAA’s every other year, like Hewittt…Mike Anderson is not coming to GT..No way he wants to be in the coach K conference…

can you read?..GT fans say he is terrible, but a wayyyyyy better program thinks he was good enough for their job..READ READ READ..you are not using 1/3 of your brain!

@Yurtle_the_turtle
I have a life, When Gt went up early and coach k got a tech on a play that was clearly a foul i knew the game was over..If Mark Price was coach it was still going to happen..unless you hire Coach K, you will never win an ACC title.. you GT fans allow bs so u get bs….

Hewitt is a good man and would be a great representative for GT basketball, if only he could coach. I like him very much as a person and gentileman. he doesn’t deserve the bashing, do you blame him. Would you quit with all that doe at stake.

However he must go, he simply is a very poor game coach. He does not make adjustments and frequently does not seem to see the game unfolding. He is regularly outcoached. He is not really a very good judge of talent, other then all the one and dones, which i don’t blame him for, he has missed on quite few ” highly rated recruits” that simply have not panned out. Some of its poor coaching, some of it poor evaluaton, poor preparation, putting players in situations that they simply can not succeed in. Other then JJ, he has never had a really solid point guard (I love Shump, but he is not a point guard by nature).

I still watch every away game and go to every home game and will continue to do so because i love my jackets, but we REALLY NEED A NEW COACH.

Let me assure this fine blog that, again, on or before March 14th Hewitt will be fired. Folks, it is as good as done and I know that to be fact. No grey area at all. The GT business plan submitted for the new building shows Hewitt’s contract gone. Furthermore, initial discussions have begun on the coaching search and Hewitt is aware of this. Everything is just playing itself out. The year ahead of the new arena will give the new coaching staff a little breathing room to rebuild the program. Drad has been in touch with quite a few boosters. Trust me everyone in the Tech basketball program is just riding this out. There is no speculation needed. It’s done. The Good Word.

GT had a game? I did not even know. I would have to say, apathy is an understatement.

Hewitt is a crook. I am not saying I wouldn’t take money thrown at me, but Hewitt should at least be honest about it and admit he doesn’t deserve what he is getting paid based on his overall performance. At least then I might have an iota of respect for the man.

As it is, he is an underperformer who supports reverse discrimination.
