Quotes after Tech’s loss to FSU

A transcript of quotes following Georgia Tech’s 72-63 loss to Florida State on Thursday at Alexander Memorial Coliseum, courtesy of Tech’s sports information department:

Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt

Opening Statement

“As well as they defended us and as poorly as we shot in the first half, I thought that we had a legitimate shot in the second half. Even though we were down 12, we had a chance to get back into this and get back into the game. We started off with some pretty good momentum, but we committed some fouls there when we were making our run, holding fouls, bad fouls that we talked about, that got them to the foul line, get some points and keep their margin for the second half.”

On not getting over the hump

“Not being able to get that third basket when we were trying to come back was due to their ability, but it was also due to the fouling. I think that really eliminated any chance that we had to get over that hump.”

On the team’s shooting percentage

“It could be what happens when you are a jump shooting team. We rely so heavily on [the shooters]. The effort level is there and I am pleased with it 100 percent. They are playing hard and I see them growing and maturing, especially a guy like Glen [Rice, Jr.]. We just have to get more around the bucket and finish.”

On the play of freshman Jason Morris

“I think Jason is capable of more. I know that he is a freshman, but he is a pretty good player. I guess that his mindset just has to be more aggressive and he has to see the game a bit better. He is giving us a good effort. I asked him in particular to pick up his rebounding and he had four tonight, a couple on the offensive end. You will see some development. I know he is capable of more, and that is not a criticism of him, it is just more that I think he is a good player. Once his confidence level gets to the level of confidence that I have in him you will see him put up more numbers offensively. ”

On Iman Shupert hitting the career 1,000 point mark

“I know that Iman will be the first to tell you that it isn’t the most important thing to him, the most important thing is winning games. Obviously, he is having a terrific career statistically and he is giving us everything that he has. He is another guy that has grown an awful lot as a player. He has matured, understands how to run a team and I just wish that we could get him and Glen some more help.”

Glen Rice, Jr.

On Florida State’s defense

“I don’t think they were doing anything different. I just felt like [Iman] Shumpert and them would get into the paint and kick it out and myself in particular, just weren’t making the inside out threes that we would normally make. A couple times we set up for the three instead of getting to the basket and making them foul us. Other than that, they didn’t do anything in particular.”

On foul calls

“The referees let us play sometimes and they would call us other times. I didn’t really feel like you could gauge what they were going to call or not. Several times both teams tried to take it in and they wouldn’t call it. That is just part of the game and you have to play through.”

FSU coach Leonard Hamilton

Opening Statement

“We played a lot of guys tonight because we felt that we had to play with a lot of energy. We got a lot of guys into the game in the first half and I think that it allowed us to sustain our energy. At least in the second half I thought we came out and played with a lot more energy. We were able to extend the lead and then when we made those mistakes we were able to hold them off down the stretch.”

On drawing so many fouls in the second half

“I’m not really sure that it is anything that we were doing differently, other than attempting to move the ball a little better than we had during periods in the first half. I thought we got more ball screens; I thought we got more penetration, the ball reversals were a little better. We didn’t get the ball inside nearly as much as I had wanted to but the times that we did get the ball inside, I thought that we were effective at drawing fouls and getting to the foul line.”

On not being able to put Tech away for good

“Well obviously we had played fairly good up to a certain point, I think we had a 14-15 point lead. Then we had some turnovers that you really don’t coach against: dribbling the ball off of your foot, letting it go through your hands, throwing it out of bounds. Those things are the kind of mistakes that are mental errors and so if we make those kind of errors when we don’t have the extended lead like we did, those can be costly. Hopefully we will do a better job of it, and the guys who made the mistakes are guys who are supposed to be guys that make better decisions with the ball. In the ACC, you take a road victory anyway you can get it.”

On an inconsistent team working on its tournament resume

“We have been a team kind of in transition all year long, losing [Ian] Miller and then losing Xavier [Gibson], kind of like everybody else. And then we have four new kids that we are trying to work into the environment, into the system. We have had a learning curve. We have played excellent basketball at times and we have played like a team that is still trying to find itself. But we like this team, and we just hope that we can continue to keep winning while developing, just get through this stretch and just pull them out and hopefully a little later we will be a well-oiled machine. Right now, we are not anywhere close to being as good as I think we are capable of. If there is one positive thing that I like about this team it is that even though we are 7-3, and within striking distance of the top teams in our league, we still have room to improve.”

To all Georgia Tech Basketball Players I say fellas, I love you and you deserve so much better when it comes to coaching and instruction. Georgia Tech, well….Dave Braine to be specific, has failed you.

To Doug, I know you have to print/post this stuff b/c it’s your job but doesn’t it get old?

He’s gone…whether he leaves on his own or not. He’s only got about 4 more weeks as the Head Basketball Coach at Georgia Tech.

DRad is having a forum next week to talk about the new arena. He needs to discuss what he is going to do about the coaching situation before he pores millions down the drain for a team that no one cares about anymore. Don’t let Blewitt take you down with him DRad. Make the change or you both will be gone soon. And stop with the threats of losing our seat priority. Look at the “crowds” and shut up and do your job or we will never be back.

A complete embarrassment – the game, the empty seats, few students, the coach. This. can’t keep going on like this. I feel for these players, they deserve more. They came here and got much less than they were promised. Our recruiting will suffer as a result for some time after we rid ourselves of the problem, or problems (including DRad if he doesn’t handle this soon).

Hey, but let’s take out 90M in bonds to build a new arena. That’s what we need a better viewing experience. Well did anyone inform DRad that it doesn’t matter how you package crap if it still smells like and looks like crap. Where do these guys come up with this stuff. Maybe we can build a new deck on the football stadium while we are at it since we are flush with money to burn.

You know what I’m going to say before I say it, but I still have to say it:

Hewitt thought they might get back into it in the second half. Why? Was there going to be a coaching change during halftime?

Dave Brainless’ extension of Gailey’s contract wasn’t bad enough, so he also stuck us with a poor basketball coach as well. Sadly, Hewitt has neither the ability to coach better or enough honor to resign (I have to say resign; he’s already quit coaching). After nearly 3 decades of the “Thrillerdome” rocking during a game, we are back to pre-Cremins games where the refs can hear insults from the cheap seats. It is shameful for the school and does a dis-service to the players. We and the players deserve better.

Tough year for the jackets and the fan support. Last year we were 23 -13 and really starting to peak at this time. Not the same this year. Was there tonight and it is ashame the fans are not coming out. Shumpert is having a terrific year and he has developed so much this year in all aspects of his game. He and singleton were clearly the 2 best players on the court and believe both will translate well to NBA. CPJ was there tonight which was nice to see.

Do we really deserve better.

GT hired Braine who stuck us first with the debt of a stadium that we only can fill with our larger opponent’s fans and basically put us on the brink of bankruptcy. Then stuck us with the burden of a lifetime contract for an unproven basketball coach.

Then we get DRad who basically screws over the GT football fans and scraps the promise of reseating the stadium every five years based on point total for the ingenious new invention of the TECH fund and just doesn’t want to take the time to reseat as promised (but if you had extra tix you could hand the off to a friend or neighbor for them to have a life time contract even though they never made an AT contribution). Now with years of dwindling GT basketball tix and attendance, our wise leader makes the decision to spend $90M on a better “fan experience”. I’ll take a Cameron indoor crappy view for a quality product & game any day.

Bad business and customer decisions seem to be the norm for our leaders. Where do we get these guys and where do they learn this nonsense business acumen. I don’t think we are getting better in any respect and we get what we deserve when we hire these decision makers.

From one very unhappy AT Life Member who got stiffed on football reseating when I made it to the dance and a corporate basketball season tix holder who will not be buying seats next year or maybe ever again. Maybe DRad will let me pass my courtside seats over to my neighbor if they’ll take them.

This is how I see it. Hewitt will be the coach next year. Several factors. One, next year is a wash anyway with all games played at phillips and gwinnett. So fan support will be minimal anyway. Keep him next year and as normal we have some decent recruits coming in that we will need. Shumpert and prob rice are nba bound most likely after this season so those recruits will be more important. Fire him after nextseason and hire a new coach going into the new arena will create good vibes with the fans and alot of season ticket sells.

Why would anybody pay to see a team that can’t even break 20 points at half time?

I can count the number of exciting games on my hand since the 2004 season.

Every game for the last 6 years is a slop-fest. Pitiful, can’t shoot f/t’s, inbound balls, turnover’s galore. Same thing, different year. GROUND HOG DAY!

What does Blewitt have these players do during practice?!?

He is absolutely the worst coach in College Sports. He’s been a fat cat ever since Braineless signed that contract. He cares more about the Black Coaches Assoc., than he does GT BB,. It has shown for the last 6 years if anybody else has paid attention.

50K bonus for making the NIT, WHAT?!?

89 I agree with you on the stadium expansion totally not needed. Don’t think dead fully understands his customer base here. At lsu football sold itself at tech you have a good 25 to 30k fanbase year end year out. The rest you get win the team does well good opponents etc. Drop the tech fund completely we are a football factory, tech tickets at face value are a good deal and that would draw in the fringe fans to fill the stadium. Times are tough and tech needs to make adjustments.

“I just wish that we could get Shumpert and Glen some more help.” What kind of statement is that? That’s an insult to his other players. This statement is one of hundred reasons Blewitt needs to leave. Blewitt will never have a winning team even if he got the best players because he doesn’t coach players to be “Team Playersl” He is all about making certain players the go to players and that is killing the team. He is Stupid. Have you ever looked at him when the camera gets a close view of him, he’s stupid looking too!

Are you on drugs? My goodness that is a terrible post! Parker is wanting to get out of coming to GT now and NOBODY is wanting to come to play for hewitt now because they see the writing on the wall! Would you want to play for a program that was going to fire the coach who in recruiting? If you say yes then you are more delusional than i thought! With where the fan base is now, keeping him around another year will just further dig the whole for our program! His A** is gone anyway! DRAD is going to fire him before march the 15th as hewitt has to have 30 days notice and the roll-over starts april 15th! I would put my mortgage on that happening! Hewitt is done at GT and then our new coach can start trying to undo the damage this idiot has done to our program!

Paul Hewitt is a joke. Thank God for DVR because I can watch the tech basketball games in about 20-30 minutes. Also, whoever said Glen Rice Jr. was going to the NBA next year is clueless. He looks like and old man running down the floor in a mens league and look at his posture. Hewitt is not only a terrible coach he has picked the wrong recruits. Mfon.Oliver , Rice, and Holsey would fit in better at Ga. State or at best Cayton State. Rivals had Udofia as the #5 point guard in the nation and he doesnt even know what the dribble drive or dribble penetration is. He is a embarrassment to the program and he needs to leave with Hewitt. But you know what, in Africa they dont have TV’s so its probably not his fault. Its sad that Atlanta Is the mecca and GT can’t get players that know anything about the fundamentals of basketball (AAU is killing college basketball) and only padding certain peoples pockets. This will take atleast four years to overcome this hole Paul Hewitt has dug GT basketball program into. And also can you imagine ESPN they got to lugh or cry from 7 to 9pm tonight what and embarassment for the yellow jacket fans.

WOW!!!! The empty seats keep growing and growing at each game. They may want to reconsider the remodel. The way Hewitt has them going there will not be anyone to fill the seats. It is going to cost them more than the 7 million buyout the way he is going. Talking about having talent and not coaching them up. Hewitt is a prime example of that. Fox is taking UGA on the way up and we are going in the opposite direction. Said time for the jacket fans.

There is something some of you need to understand about why we are getting a new arena. There was $15M donated specifically for that purpose – not for the GTAA to do anything they wanted with it. Also, the upcoming maintenance cost on the 54 year old AMC (I believe around $18M) made rebuilding in place a sound financial decision.

If Hewitt hasn’t been fired up to now, there is a good reason for it. How many of you have access to what the financial picture is at the GTAA? Do you know if any big donors have put up any money to buy Hewitt out? Do you think Radakovich is blind or stupid? Let me tell you, he is not. We are lucky to have him. I love GT basketball and I am just as frustrated and embarrassed as any of you, but there is no reason to believe that Radakovich does not have the situation under control. Try to think more long term – he will get this situation corrected when the money AND the right guy to replace Hewitt are both in place. Hiring someone just because they are not named Paul Hewitt would be a mistake. I hope the change is made before March 15th, but either way I think you will be thanking Radakovich in a year or two that he took a measured approach to solving this problem. GT basketball will be back.

“It could be what happens when you are a jump shooting team. We rely so heavily on [the shooters]. ”

Yeah, especially when your “shooters” can’t shoot! No doubt Hewitt is the biggest part of the problem, and he needs to go, ASAP. But I don’t know if he can be blamed for the terrible shooting performances of this group.

My favorite Hewitt blunder (and it happens every game) is the knee-jerk 2nd-half timeouts. Whenever Tech is down by 10 or more in the second half, and they make a three…TIMEOUT! I don’t think Hewitt even consciously knows he’s calling a TO…it’s like a reflex thing. Lots of times it’ll be a few seconds before a TV timeout is coming! Of course what this does is kill any momentum the team may be building. But the really telling thing is what happens immediately after the TO…and it’s usually not good.

There is no “team” in this team. It’s Shumpert and Rice scrambling up and down the court throwing up prayers. They’ve given up on the “team” concept (a concept apparently alien to Hewiit). I don’t get angry anymore though…I just laugh now (to keep from crying). I want to see them get beat down badly down the stretch so the Hewitt nightmare can end.

Glen Rice took 28 shots last night. Twenty-eight. Dude, you ain’t your dad. We had 24 offensive rebounds (mostly because of the bricks being fired from 3-point range which caused long rebounds), took 32 more shots than the other team, and lost by 9. Shumpert and Rice together took more shots than FSU. Are you telling me that it is just impossible to get the other guys in position to score? Please. This team has no clue on offense and no coaching to put a game plan together. The only thing that got Tech back in the game was pressing, then once we got it to 7 points, we stopped pressing. Lousy coaching job all the way around… But, then, that’s no big surprise, is it?

If you had resigned, or acquiesced to a negotiated buyout or change of roles, a year or two ago, you probably would have left a positive legacy at Tech overall. Maybe you could even have stayed on in administration, you were so well liked. But you’ve thrown all that away. That ship sailed in 2008 or 2009. I can’t imagine anyone likes to be hated, and don’t you see what damage you are doing to your much-ballyhooed “causes”? What kind of example are you setting for your players, and what kind of impression are you making for the BCA you led in the past? Instead of “proving you aren’t a quitter” you are only proving that you are greedy, oblivious, and unfit for leadership. Not a good legacy for any coach.

Right on, Full Metal Jacket! My anger is now spilling over to DRAD who is beginning to appear like he is doing nothing. I’d like to see a public “tongue lash” about this “coach” and the team’s effort. While employed, Blewitt needs a public “spanking” from this administration. I showed my kids the score from last night’s game and showed them our current record. “THIS is why we can’t support this sorry coach” I told them. They are beginning to see the light. Once again, I’ll drive to Athens to show them how a real coach does his job.
