More of Georgia Tech’s 2011 schedule is announced

Three more pieces of Georgia Tech’s football schedule were announced today, including the game against Georgia.

After opening with a Thursday night Sept. 1 home game against Western Carolina (previously reported here), the Yellow Jackets will play at Middle Tennessee State on Sept. 10 and then will host Kansas on Sept. 17. Tech will end the regular season at home against the Bulldogs on Nov. 26. That completes Tech’s non-conference schedule.

The ACC is expected to announce the entire schedule very soon. The opponents are known:

  • ACC Home: Clemson, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia Tech
  • ACC Away: NC State, Virginia, Miami, Duke
  • The Yellow Jackets went 6-7 last season.  Tech lost several standout players from last year’s team, including quarterback Joshua Nesbitt, B-back Anthony Allen and middle linebacker Brad Jefferson. The team must also replace three starters on the offensive line and the entire secondary.

From a personal standpoint, this strikes me as a very advantageous schedule for the Yellow Jackets. Many of the new starters, particularly on the offensive line, got experience last season. However, there may be quite a few players who haven’t been in there “when the bullets start flying,” as Paul Johnson often says. Playing three games before diving into ACC play should be a huge benefit.

Here is some info on Tech’s non-conference opponents:

    Western Carolina

Sept. 1 at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

2010 record: 2-9 overall, 1-7 in the FCS Southern Conference.

Last year’s result: Did not play.

Tech coach Paul Johnson is a WCU alum (class of ‘79). WCU averaged 16.5 points and allowed a whopping 34.5. The rushing attack was led by Decatur native Michael Johnson (611 yards), who will be a junior. The team was quarterbacked by Zac Brindise, a transfer from South Carolina. He passed for 1,405 yards and seven touchdowns last season as a junior. After the season, coach Dennis Wagner fired offensive coordinator Keith Heckendorf and tabbed himself as the play-caller.

    Middle Tennessee State

    Sept. 10 in Murfreesboro

2010 record: 6-7 overall, 5-3 in the Sun Belt.

Last year’s result: Tech won 42-14 at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

This will be Tech’s first visit to Murfreesboro, Tenn. Dual-threat quarterback Dwight Dasher is gone, but the team returns Logan Kilgore (540 passing yards) and Jeff Murphy (395 passing yards). The team averaged 26.5 points and allowed 28.1 last season.

    Kansas

Sept. 17 at Bobby Dodd Stadium

    2010 record: 3-9 overall, 1-7 in the Big 12.

Last year’s result: Tech lost 28-25 in Lawrence, Kan.

The loss in Week 2 last season set off alarms for Tech fans. After all, the Jayhawks were beaten in their season-opener by a FCS team. In the second year of Turner Gill’s regime, Kansas will bring its most productive quarterback, running back and wide receiver to Atlanta: Jordan Webb (1,195 passing yards), James Sims (742 rushing yards) and Daymond Patterson (487 receiving yards). The Jayhawks lost three of the best defensive players, but will return linebacker Steven Johnson (team-leading 95 tackles). Kansas averaged 17.1 points and allowed 34.4 last season. Both were among the worst in the FBS. This will be the Jayhawks’ first game at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

    Georgia

Nov. 26 at Bobby Dodd Stadium

2010 record: 6-7 overall, 3-5 in the SEC.

Last year’s result: Tech lost 42-34 in Athens.

The Bulldogs have defeated the Jackets two consecutive seasons. Tech dominated last year’s game on the stat sheet, but four turnovers were its undoing. The Bulldogs return quarterback Aaron Murray (3,049 yards, 24 touchdowns) and a big question mark at running back, where incoming freshman Isaiah Crowell, one of the nation’s most sought-after running backs, could provide an answer. The Bulldogs lost wide receiver A.J. Green, who caught eight passes for 97 yards in last year’s game. Will Georgia’s 3-4 defense improve under second-year coordinator Todd Grantham?

    GT,

The other schools have a say when we play them too. Bank on it, as long as CPJ is here NO conference games will be played in weeks one or two ever again. They will not agree to taking on the TO that early in the season while they’re still getting their game legs and game speed down. In fact what we’re going to start seeing is more teams scheduling us after their bye week or Thursday night game weeks.

Would love for the mutts to play in the ACC with 3 star athletes… They can’t even manage a winning record with top ten recruiting classes. With that talent you should be able to play a top ten team a week and win half the games.

    Stay classy Athens..

Schedule sets up pretty good for GT: couple of cupcakes at the beginning for the new QB to work out the kinks before he hits conference play. Toughest game (UGA) is at home, VT game is always a toss-up, and going to Miami will be tough. Clem’s Son at home. Win 2 of those 4 and you’ve set yourself up for a 9 – 10 win season. Not bad considering the replacements being made.

Actually we do. The myth that UGA doesnt win with its 4 and 5 star guys is just that. A myth

UGA had 90 wins last decade. That tied Florida for 7th most in the NCAA.

Lets see. Top Ten in wins. Top ten recruiting classes.

Tech may very well beat Georgia next year, but I’m not about to predict it. I’ll never predict a Tech win over Georgia….ever. As far as I’m concerned Tech starts every season out with an 0-1 record.

Must be nice to have a cupcake schedule going into another cupcake schedule……

Yet you will still lose 5 games plus another to UGA.

And you nerds trying to feel better about yourself by saying all this “UGA gets 4-5 star athletes and never wins National Titles…. yada yada yada”….

Please do not forget to point out that we NEVER have the top recruiting class in the SEC….EVER. We get beat by teams who are suppose to beat us. And teams are consisted of human beings, so sometimes we will lose to teams who aren’t suppose to beta us. But you don’t. So get over it.

    UGAX,

Thanks. I think Georgia’s problems with Florida are much more psychological and in that regard an easier fix. Georgia has had every bit the talent Florida has had save a few seasons I just think the coaching part (not so much the head men but more the coordinators) has favored Flordia for a long time and with little success it has gotten into UGA’s heads.

Tech really has no business even competing with Georgia (or any of the other football powers for that matter). Tech will rarely if ever have the quality of talent UGA has and will continue to get (for a myriad of reasons) and to even have a shot must play a perfect or near perfect game and hope UGA stumbles. Even in 2008 Tech played a perfect half and had UGA simply played 75% as well in the 2nd half as they did in the first Georgia would have won. As it was Georgia played about 1/2 as well in the second half and Tech still barely eecked out a win. It’s just the way it is and it’s one of the reasons I’m 100% in favor of moving the game to week 1. Neither school should be viewing this game as it’s end-all be-all game of the year since the game has little post season ramifications for either program.

Now that Fish Fry has gone through Chan Gailey’s last recruiting class let’s see just how well he does with his own signees. Starting off with W Carolina, Middle Tenn and Kansas, whew, now that’s a tough stretch of games. The question is ‘how many will wander down to the Joke by Coke on a Thursday to see the mighty Jackets take on Western Carolina? 10,000, maybe?

For you GT folks worried about the Dawgs Top 10 recruiting classes, keep worrying. Some of you like to use the “academics excuse” to explain away your miserable recruiting class for 2010. Yet GT offered 10 instate guys who signed with us, we offered NONE of the instate guys you signed. In my math that makes you guys 0 for 10 against us. Don’t believe academics is the issue, seems it’s more a case of “rather play for Coach Richt and the Dawgs than Fish Fry and Tech”. Academics, what a joke!!!

So because all 10 of those players chose UGA over Tech you conclude it’s not because the academics at Tech are tougher on them? Logic please? Are you saying their high school transcripts and test scores were good evenough to get into both schools and UGA got 10 out of 10? Then you’d be correct. Hoever for Tech that’s only part of it. The academic “issues” at Tech also have to do with what the kids are required to take once they get on campus. This is what is used against Tech, by Georgia and other teams coaches, in recruiting.

Remember, most of our athletes major in Management. You can get a management degree from Georgia by taking College Algebra, Statistics, and one lab science course. Can’t do that at Tech where the same degree requires two Calcs and three lab science courses.

Within the next 5 years, players who want the Atlanta experience will start looking at Georgia State over Tech.

Georgia State will join Conference USA, begin to play better teams, and in time build a nice, respectable program.

Georgia State has a much more appealing curriculum to an athlete, and much more of a normal student body full of females to choose from.

If you are a Techie and think what I said above is pure jibberish, you need to take off the yellow glasses.

Georgia State is going to rip a hole through your program.

Doug, thank you for your efforts updating at least the non ACC part of Tech’s football schedule for 2011. I sense that even the Tech athletic office might be wondering what is going on with the delay by the ACC in releasing the rest of the schedule. Seems like the ACC should have this schedule out sooner with the dates before individual schools start selling season tickets. I know this is not Tech’s fault, but the ACC and TV folks need to do a better job in my opinion on this issue.

    Don’t feed the trolls…

This schedule shapes up nicely for us. If the defense can improve, I feel good about next year.

The O-line should be better than it has been at any point since Johnson has been here. The other skill positions on offense will be less experienced, but we have some good depth at all of these positions, except wide receiver. But Stephen Hill started playing better near the end of the season, and Chris Jackson will be back if he takes care of his business.
