Georgia Tech will open with a Thursday-nighter

Georgia Tech will open its 2011 football schedule with a Thursday night game against Western Carolina on Sept. 1, according to WCU. The rest of the ACC’s football schedule may be coming out this week. Georgia Tech’s opponents are already known:

2011

  • ACC Home: Clemson, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia Tech
  • ACC Away: NC State, Virginia, Miami, Duke
  • Nonconference Home: Kansas, Western Carolina, Georgia
  • Nonconference Away: Middle Tennessee State

The Catamounts went 2-9 overall, 1-7 in the tough Southern Conference last season. They averaged 16.5 points and allowed a whopping 34.5. The rushing attack was led by Decatur native Michael Johnson (611 yards), who will be a junior.  The team was quarterbacked by Zac Brindise, a transfer from South Carolina. He passed for 1,405 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior. After the season, coach Dennis Wagner fired offensive coordinator Keith Heckendorf and tabbed himself as the play-caller.

Tech coach Paul Johnson is a WCU alum (class of ‘79). The Catamounts are 0-4 against Tech, losing their last meeting in 1994.

Tech has won four consecutive season-opening games. It last lost to Notre Dame 14-10 in 2006 at Bobby Dodd.

When I recruit JV talent, we get JV time slots.

Make this the 4th of the last 7 home games that will go un-televised.

At least we are playing a team that matches up well against our talent.

I doubt seriously if Vad Lee will even play in this game. I look for him to red shirt. He hasn’t run this offense and I doubt he’ll be ready in only 3-4 weeks of practice.

As a fan, I love attending the Thursday night games. The atmosphere is great. In early September, it will have the added benefit of being a little cooler than an afternoon game and still be mostly played (at least the first half) in daylight. Who cares whether it’s on ESPN or not? Buy a ticket and head to the game.

Not too jazzed about a Thursday night opener but I guess it will do. Hopefully we’ll get to see some young guys get some quality minutes. Can’t wait for Sept. Go Jackets!!!

Ok.

Tech has no right to EVER make fun of anybody for scheduling cupcakes again.

Way to step it up with this one!!! Funny thing is, I am not convinced you will be able to win this game.

I hope our defense is good enough to allow Vad Lee to get some significant snaps. If our defense allows the opponent to match scores with us, CPJ is unable to give younger players some much-needed experience.

This just in. Georgia’s entire dream team drowned early this morning when the pickup in which they were riding plunged off the road and into the Chattahochee River. No one on board was able to open the tail gate for the players to get out. Film at 11.

I hope none of the big games are Thursday nighters. It’s hell driving 2 1/2 hours to get home that late at night. And for those questioning whether it will be televised, why else would it be on a Thursday night? As for you stupid mutts, what are you going to do after the SEC starts requiring all SEC team to play one Thursday night game? The mutts have refused to do so so far, but it’s coming.

Would you say that Auburn, Oregon, South Carolina, Florida State, Virginia tech, Miss St, Nebraska, Miami, Texas A&M, USC, and West Va were all JV teams last year?

Delbert, isn’t that amazing? He wasn’t even considered by a single Div 1 school, and look at him now. And whatever happened to all those super THUGa QBs who went pro? Are any of them still active?

Most schools in the country recognize that that Thursday night time slot is PRIME exposure, and they welcome it. The mutts have been too self-absorbed and/or stupid to realize that and have missed out on great national exposure. But then I guess it’s tough getting all those tractors out of the fields and to Athens on a Thursday night.

supersize,

Hines Ward played a little QB back in the day. Think he still holds the total offense record in the Chicken Bowl. 1995?

He turned out alright.

Matt Stafford when healthy, is the reason a lot of folks see the Lions as up and coming. They actually play a little defense in Detroit now.

UGA has a lot of players in the pros, just not many QB’s. Quality winning college QB’s don’t always translate to pro QB’s.

If our strength and conditioning program doesn’t improve, we will have a new staff in 2012.

If CPJ doens’t win at least 9 in 2011, how long will the Tech folks continue to support him?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

this game will not be the ESPN game you morons.

There are about 20 games on the first Thursday. I am unsure of who has ESPN, but I assure you…. it’s NOT this one.

I think Stafford is still active with the Lions, although he was injured for most of last year. They should be a decent team this year if the defense keeps improving. Not to mention Calvin is emerging as one of the better WR in the league

I didn’t remember that Hines Ward played QB. I knew Stafford was still with the Lions, but with all those injuries, I doubt he lasts long. I can still remember how wonderful and great Zier(sp?) was and how he was going to burn it up in the pros. Obviously that never happened. But, and this was a LONG time ago, at least Tarkenton was fantastic. Other than against Tech, I actually pulled for the mutts back when he played. That was before their fans became what they are today.

Almost everyone schedules terrible teams to start the season. If they don’t then they play terrible teams later in the season. College football is really a 9 game schedule for most teams with a couple of practice games which is just sad. As long as the BCS sticks around good teams have no reason to play other good teams out of conference.

Stafford separated his shoulder. He didn’t lose a limb. He is 24 years old and will be back.

Zeier was 5′11″ tall on a good day. But he could sure throw the ball around the yard. Of course he had to, because UGA couldn’t stop anybody.

That 1992 team will go down for me as the most underachieving team of all time at UGA. Lost to UT by 4 and Florida by 5. Went 10-2 and beat Ohio state in bowl game. That team led to Wayne McDuffie’s suicide more than anything else in his life. He KNEW they were that close to winning it all.

This is embarrassing. What good is this game going to do for us. Vad Lee will be red-shirted this year. He needs more time to add some muscle and get used to the offense. He will then be ready to go and should really put some spark into our offense. Let’s just hope he can pass a little.

@ Tech Man

I happen to know that Vad will get his chance to play this Fall. If he impresses over Washington and Days, CPJ will play him. Write it down.

I just hope CPJ adjusts his current scheme to allow for more passing. I’d hate to see Vad’s arm talent wasted…

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Georgia State opens its program and 2010 season to 30K plus and plans to do it again in 2011.

Let’s see how many we get and how many Tech gets.

Tech Man, for better or worse EVERY school schedules at least one “patsy” like this. At least it’s not in the middle of the season like Bama and Ga State last year, or THUGa with their homecoming opponent EVERY year. As to why we are playing AT MTSU, I don’t like it either, but apparently they have a fairly large stadium and they fill it up. I think Grant Field will be full for the “big games” this year, but certainly not for W Carolina or MTSU (IF we played them in Atlanta)
