Shumpert named ACC player of the week

Georgia Tech’s Iman Shumpert was named the ACC player of the week today.

Shumpert, a junior guard, posted the fourth triple-double in Tech history in the Yellow Jackets’ 72-57 win against Virginia Tech. He scored 22 points with 12 rebounds and 11 assists. He added 12 points, three assists and three steals in a 74-63 loss to Maryland on Sunday.

Why aren’t all college and pro basketball teams required to get a flu shot? I’ve wondered that for a long time. With Oliver well, we beat the Terps or at least play them even. Shumpert had the flu earlier in the week, didn’t he? He didn’t have his usual energy and shot and rebounding were off as a result.

I was just thinking about past fired Jacket coach Bill Carson. After firing he became the defensive coordinator for the Steel Curtain and earned 4 Superbowl rings. I don’t think he was outgoing enough to be head coach. However seems to me he was better off without us.
I wish Dodd had gone to Texas in 1957 where his success would have continued and so Broyles would have been the one to replace him.
I also wish Hewitt left after the 2004 cinderella year.
I hear everyone about Hewitt but I wonder if we don’t have the same delusions about our teams as we accuse UGA’ fans of having.

Jackets2010-11, were you at the game Sunday night? If so then 1) you would know that even with Oliver playing we were a long shot (no pun intended) to beat the Terps, and 2) you would have seen first hand Hewitt’s coaching ineptitude. I specifically refer to a) the same inbounds play that he has run for years which involves no screens, simply guys running straight back to get the ball (and Shumpert standing still trying box out his man and then trying to get the 2nd pass), b) the same old offense that involves screens at the top of the key, no other movement without the ball and invariably devolves to 1 guy trying to beat 3 other guys off the dribble and firing up a forced shot, and finally c) the inexplicable use of the next to last TO after you made a big bucket to cut the lead to 3 with 4 minutes remaining. WHY????

If Shumpert was playing like he had his head up his rear because he was recovering from the flu then maybe OK. He looked to be in a fog all night, especially after the way he played against UNC and VT.
