How good was Tech/bad was Wake

This is how good Georgia Tech played, or bad Wake Forest played depending upon your point of view, in the Yellow Jackets’ 74-39 win on Wednesday:

  • Tech could have gone scoreless in the second half and still won by five. (That’s courtesy of WSB’s Zach Klein).

Here’s a few more notes:

  • It was Tech’s largest margin of victory in an ACC game, surpassing a 31-point win against FSU in 2002.
  • The Deacons missed 17 of their 21 shots in the second half, as part of a 14-for-54 performance overall.
  • The Deacons missed 13 of their 15 3-pointers.
  • The Deacons missed 17 of their 26 free throws.
  • It was Wake’s lowest score since 1959, when it lost 44-34 against North Carolina.

A few more items:

Tech’s Largest Victory Margin in an ACC Game

39 vs. Wake Forest (Jan. 19, 2011)

31 vs. Florida State (Jan. 30, 2002)

30 vs. Clemson (Feb. 1, 1995)

27 vs. North Carolina (Feb. 1, 1990)

27 vs. Virginia (Jan. 19, 2001)

Fewest Points Allowed in an ACC Game

43 vs. Maryland (Dec. 23, 1981)

43 vs. Maryland (Feb. 19, 1985)

46 vs. Virginia (Jan. 21, 1985)

46 vs. Florida State (Jan. 30, 2002)

47 vs. Duke (Feb. 3, 1982)

47 vs. NC State (Jan. 15, 1984)

47 vs. Virginia (Feb. 9, 2000)

after perusing Tech’s schedule..16-14 at best..Wake is terrible…If Tech still shoots the three with Shumpert and Oliver then 17-13 is posssible..Sorry, forgot the ACC tourney-17-15

If Tech gets close to 500 in ACC play, it will be because the conference is so week this year. I antipate that these wins will only lead to overconfidence and some losses more in line with the Clemson game.

I think Tech played with confidence tonight which helped, but it’s mostly how bad Wake is. Wake is a program in disarray right now. I feel bad for them. They are 0-4 in the ACC losing by at least 19 in each game. Plus they have Duke next. Still good for Tech to get another win in though to keep their confidence up.

This was a terrible game. Give the Jackets their due. Wake was just terrible. I would love to see what Kennesaw State would do to that team. Ari Stewart played more like a wrestler than a basketball player. And I guess that the refs must have been paid by the foul call b/c the last part of the 1st half through almost the entire 2nd half was littered with blows of the whistle. Foul, foul, foul, timeout, foul, timeout, substitution, foul, etc. I’m glad that Tech won, and they definitely were not trying to run up the score. Shumpert and Rice’s performance just carried over from the UNC game. However, this was just a boring game and poorly officiated at that.

Doug, in addition to your writing duties, you should consider becoming Tech’s statistician. You’re good with the numbers.

This is so strange, Wake gets this new coach and immediately becomes the worst team in the ACC, not what generally happens when Wake hires coaches. Tech beats Carolina four times in a row, so that is not really making a statement, then they beat Wake which has lost enough game to the Big South Conference opponents to be in the bottom of that weak low level conference, maybe the worst ACC teams in years. Going to Virginia this weekend will be a test, but there is no reason to believe Tech can win that game, Va. is playing like an ACC team and has a history of beating Tech there. Win this one and you got my attention. .

This year’s Wake Forest team is the worst ACC team since the 1980-81 GT squad (Duane Morrison’s last year). Having said that, if this win has given GT some confidence and they continue to play with grit and effort, the schedule sets up to have a good run. Let’s see how GT does. Based on past performance under CPH you have to expect them to lose on the road, but you never know.

If the news about Stephon Tuitt de-committing from Tech and re-committing to the Irish are true…..

he is a scumbag.

Sorry Techies. I wouldn’t even wish this on you. The kid needed to stay home and represent with either UGA or Tech. Either one, just not the freakin’ Irish.

2 bottom feeder programs in the acc, which only has 2 teams ranked in top 25. Tech is a joke of a program, and it’s coach is even worse. If this clown didn’t have 6 or 7 million buyout clause in contract, he would have been gone 3 years ago. Tech can hold it’s head up high for beating north carolina, which is another joke in the mighty acc. Tech can beat it’s chest and brag about it’s pathetic coach when it goes 8-8 in the mighty acc this year. Then the most pathetic sport’s writers of the most pathetic news source in the country can brag about how he has turned the program around. These clowns will talk about how tech is such an up and coming program, but one thing they will never mention is the fact that tech is the 3rd best team in the state, behind UGA and Kennesaw St. What a joke of program Tech has built. It has a middle of the conference football team, a bottom of the conference basketball team, and yet the ass wiping newspaper has them as a major headline. AJC & Ga Tech=loser products. No one wants to buy or support either product.

Its good that GT gets alot of steals, however the way we SLAP wildly at the ball gives good teams like Duke an advantage everytime. We lead the ACC in steals, but of course we do with our guard heavy team, we probably also lead the league in fouls!
Best thing for GT hoops this year would be a deep run in the NIT.
Its nice to see the team FINALLY playing with some Heart tho!

You know I think “Who Cares” is a Dawg!! Talk about bottom feeders, my gosh the Dawgs have won more games this year than the last three years combined. They are starting to destruct and will be done soon in the “mighty SEC” conference. (joke basketball) Let’s just see how far the Dawgs as season progresses.. By the way, your win in Atlanta was similar to a recent football game, hold your breathe and pray for threes!! Who cares!!

What’s gotten into Tech lately? Either they’ve awakened from an extended slumber or the old – time ACC powers are REALLY down this season. (FSU beats Duke? Tech beats anybody?) Also, couldn’t help but notice the background in the picture – was anyone at the Wake game? (Reminds me of the Stegasaurus when I was in school (’71 – 75).)

Wake has been blown out by several teams this year. However, our guys did play inspired defense and putting this effort out after playing UNC is great.

Hopefully, Paul Hewitt has his team now playing with the intensity and determination that his first teams displayed. That is what earned him the sweetheart deal he now has. But, he was expected to continue putting teams on the floor that played that way.

With the talent he now has, if he can keep his guys playing fast and determined and develop some consistent offense, there is no reason he can’t finish in the top half of the ACC.

His next test will be at Virginia. His “on the road” record in the ACC is horrible.

Even the students have lost faith in this program. The camera had to hunt for members of the “swarm”. I was watching back to back episodes of Burn Notice, which trumped this massacre in entertainment value. I tell you one thing, this coach for Wake will turn their program around before Paul Hewitt advances one round in the NCAA tournament. You watch.

No one in these parts understands what Gaudio, a Prosser disciple, did to get fired by Wake (Gaudio had a solid record). But this new coach, Bzdelik, has been a total bust, especially since Wake actually has pretty good talent.

does ron wellman still think the coaching change was a good idea? isn’t the alumni screaming for the AD’s head as well as another coaching change? how in the world can we justify paying the scholarships for this group of basketball players? To call it a disgrace is an insult. it was a rout, a disaster, loss #4 on the road to 12 more losses to close out the season at 7-24. and the AD thought Gaudio needed to go? how can that be explained?

Hey.. theres a very good assistant that Hewitt can add to improve his staff. (Hiring a ex head coach is something ive called for the past 5 years!) Hire Gaudio!!

Man from these comments you would think this Wake team had been blown out by everyone they played this year. The do have 7 wins including a home victory over Iowa out of the mighty Big 10. Sure they are not good, but they are hardly Auburn (6 points in a half; WTF!).

BTW the “irrelevant” ACC has claimed 5 of the last 10 national championships including the last 2 years. So just stop because you are only embarrassing yourself.

Dropped my tickets due to Mr. Hewitt. Bad coach who continually searches for excuses. Bad contract that keeps him here.

Weak Forest is horrible, Tech is just above the line from horrible. P.S. Dropped my football tickets also, Tech is going in a completely wrong direction. Will lose 18 to 20 games in B–Ball this year and will go 4-8 in Football next year.

I renewed my BB season tickets but only after giving much thought to the renewal. Just don’t see the GT BB getting any better. How many games have been sellouts? At the UNC game, probably a couple thousand UNC fans at game. At UGA game in December, again maybe 1,500 to 2K UGA fans at game. Just no excitement regarding GT BB. People see the resurgance at UGA, and yet GT languishes in mediocrity. How long will this last at GT before DRad has to pull the plug? Going to a GT BB game used to be an event-you WANTED to be there. Now just another game-average team, below average coach, fans have nothing to be excited about!

Congrats to Tech. Hope my Meacs don’t make you overconfident…

Everybody’s focusing on Wake’s coach, but tell me another program that’s undergone this much of a transition this year… or in the last 5 years.

- lost four seniors, including 2nd team All-ACC PG and 1st All-ACC defensive team SG
- lost NBA lottery pick in A-F Aminu
- lost starting center for disciplinary reasons
- lost only eligible PG, who broke his foot in Game 1

What new coach would excel given that incredibly tough hand?
