Quotes from Tech’s loss

SHREVEPORT, La. — Quotes from Georgia Tech’s 14-7 loss to Air Force in the Independence Bowl, courtesy of bowl organizers:

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson

“Air Force played a very good game. I said before the game started that the team that won the turnover battle is going to win the game and that is what happened. The way the game was going I knew both teams were not going to have the ball many times and I knew that.”

“We started the second half and we put together a great drive and then we fumbled the ball on the 3-yard line. It was kind of a microcosm of our season. Then we come in and have a defensive series and hold them, fumble again, go out and hold them. Then fumble again. It is hard to overcome all of those mistakes.”

“It is very disappointing. At the start of the third quarter I thought we had the game right where we wanted it. They got a touchdown and go up 14-7, but to their credit we didn’t get it in. We fumbled the ball.”

“We had to go to our back up returner, and he didn’t have it. He misjudged the first one and then he probably lost confidence after that. He has been the back-up returner all year and it is just one of those things. We had our chances, so don’t lay the loss on him.”

Defensive End Jason Peters

“Sometimes things don’t go your way and at this point we should know how to grow and mature as a team and learn how to handle those things better. The situations that don’t turn out in our favor we need to learn how to turn it in our favor and have a better outcome next time.

“That is one thing we expected to do and we expected from the young guys and you see how they work in practice. We push each other and we push ourselves and we know that we expect that from the rest of them.”

Running back Anthony Allen

On fumble before halftime

“We are kinda used to having long drives and taking some time off the clock and driving down and grinding it in. It is kinda heartbreaking and frustrating when you drive all the way into the red zone and have a fumble. The momentum kind of turned around from there when they went and scored.”

On if reality has set in that he has played his final college game

“Oh yeah most definitely. This was my last game. I wanted to go out with a win and get Georgia Tech its first bowl win in a few years but that is the way the season went, it was very frustrating. We had opportunities to make plays and win games and we did not do it.”

Air Force coach Troy Calhoun

On first half:

“We were fair on our execution in the first half, and when we’re fair we don’t move the ball nearly as proficiently. Our guys were excited, had a great week of practice, but we just weren’t quite as crisp as we have to be.”

“I thought the drive that we engineered prior to the half time was huge. It just gave us a real good boost coming in. To be able to move down the field . . . we took some shots and we able to make good throws, and in the end were able to convert the field goal. That was a key drive.”

On the upcoming off season:

“We’ll start from scratch. There’s a good bit of building that will have to occur, but we aren’t starting from the beginning. When you think of all the guys you have to replace . . . I mean we’ve got guys that have started nearly 40 games . . . and so we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.”

On the passing game:

“Coming in we thought we were going to have to hit some play action passes. Coming into the game it was going to be the turnover margin that would be a key part of it and special teams, and, just, how efficiently you could throw would be a part of it too.”

“We’ve got a guy who’s a heck of a passer and we do a tremendous job with protection. We have some capable guys on the outside who are able to run routes too.”

On 4th down conversion attempts:

“Our guys are good enough to execute. That’s who you trust.”

On the field goal kicker getting “iced” at the end of the first half:

“These guys aren’t going to get too riled up. They love to play. You’re not going to be around guys who are any more passionate, any more disciplined, guys that have any more care or pride in them than these guys. Ask these guys what’s it’s like to go through a basic training at the Air Force Academy. . . There’s some poise these guys have—that’s why they’re going to be great leaders.”

Running back Jared Tew

“That first half our offense struggled a little bit, we only got six points on the board, and we came into the locker room at half time and, just, realized we have to put some plays together, we’ve got to execute better than we did in that first half, and basically, if we took care of our responsibilities and every person did their job we knew we could drive the ball, and that’s pretty much what we did.”

On his last TD:

“My number got called on the three yard line and coach SingIeton [] says you get the ball in the red zone you don’t get stopped. I got lucky enough to get my number called, and in my last name I was lucky enough to get a touchdown. It’s pretty cool to end like that.”

CPJ is suppposed to be this offensive genius, but seriously? Tech has gone backwards in the past two years, and they are not going to be a threat for the next two years based on who they have returning. Now they are having off the field issues, and their program is falling off the map. Oh, and looking at the stadium on TV, it seemed there were MAYBE 1,000 people in the stands in the 4th quarter as the Jackets were driving. Wow. Where is the AJC pushing the panic button and writing about Johnson being on the hot seat???

I have been a CPJ supporter all season. I have continued to have optimism about the future hoping that Vad Lee may come to tech and turn into a Pat White style qb and also that Al Groh will put a mean streak in our defense. Honestly, it wouldnt surprise me if Vad Lee de-commited and we are stuck with Tevin for the next couple of years. CPJ’s ship is sinking fast. I hope the best and I hope that he proves everone wrong next season and turns it around. Doubt it, though. The lack of talent on this team is pitiful. Not one reciever who is talented. Not one qb who can make an accurate pass twice in a row. Not one defensive player who gives a rip. This season has been depressing to say the least.

Also, recruiting will drop even more after this game. The two clown announcers continued to bash GT and put them in the same basket as the 3 service academies. And they highlighted tech’s one dimensional offense all night and how tech players have a slim chance at the nfl. I hate those announcers. Any qb, wr, or even talented rb for that matter, that watched the game will look at it and avoid GT. Way to go, Johnson. You brought tech to the promised land and then not even a year later screwed the entire program over. The lack of talent and lack of discipline and motivation IS ALL HIS FAULT

A frustrating season. If this happens for 4 or 5 years, we may need to rethink things. One down season, rife with more self-inflicted wounds than any other team in college football history.

A true Tech fan can see we’re right there……hold onto the football. WIn 10. Drop it 4 times a game, win 6. It’s that simple. Hold onto the football like it’s your life!

And it also irked me that the tech players’ attitudes and expressions during and after the game were non-chalant at best. none of the players care that they had the first losing season in over 10 years at tech, and none of them care that they lost to A SERVICE ACADEMY in SHREVEPORT, LA. as untalented as tech is, they had twice as much talent as air force. the difference is that air force’s players care and they are disciplined

Reality is that you can’t blame CPJ for this loss. Point out one coaching mistake he made, and I’ll show you two mistakes made on the field by guys straight up not executing. We beat ourselves 4 times this year, at least. That’s what makes this so frustrating, that we lose because the players aren’t hanging onto the ball, are getting nonsense penalties, and are dropping passes that they have no business dropping. None of that can be blamed on a coach, in my opinion. I’ll be upset if Johnson is fired.

Reality, I am the biggest GT fan and support CPJ but I am sorry I am sick of moral victories.. one ok, 5 no it is not ok. I blame all the coaching. The team played like they did at Kansas and could have cared less. After Tevin dropped the ball, I would have tried David Sims who could not have done any worse. For that matter, Nesbitt with his one good arm would not have dropped the ball inside the 10. McKayhan’s first fumble shame on him but McKayhan’s 2nd fumble shame on the coaches. And while I am on this subject, if you had someone inthe athletic dept that kept an eye of matters such as Stephen Hill’ s status knowing he could be in trouble. Has anyone thought about getting him in summer school in which he takes only one course that quarter like the calculus or whatever it was that is his worse subject. Bottom line is PJ had the perfect storm last year of schedule, left over talent, freakish WR who he would never get to sign in that offense, and some luck. He may get a good back or 2 to play in that offense but I doubt that since NFL teams want guys who can pass block. He will never get a WR like that and Nesbitt came to play in a pro style offense when other schools only wanted him as a saftey.

That obviously has not happened and the program is in shambles….you have no playmakers returning on offense and you are laying your hopes on Vad Lee….now that all of Gailey’s players are gone there is no talent on offense and you cannot find a QB to complete 50% of his passess. At least you have basketball……oops.

The Kool-Aid Drinkers definition of what an Offensive Genius is:

CPJ and his TWO (2) Offensive TDs in THREE BOWL GAMES!

We lose Allen, Bedford and Nesbitt from the Offensive side and we lose at 5-7 Srs. off of the 2-deep on defense, things will only get worse next season.

Oh, and don’t forget Kool-Aid drinkers our SEVEN LOSSES came against the #70th toughest schedule in all of CFB according to the Sagarin computer ratings.

For all you CPJ toadies, you asked for him, now you’ve got him and at $2.3 Mil per yr. plus Hewitt’s albatross of a Contract, GT won’t be able to do anything to CPJ no matter how BAD CPJ runs our FB Program into the ground.

And that offense that isn’t.
There’s a reason only 4 teams run that thing and 3 of them are ’service’ academies.
UNtil there’s some semblance of a three-dimensional offense and a focus on fundamental football, Tech’s going nowhere – and should be placed in ‘playoff’ football.
Elon seems more Tech’s style.

Va Tech alum here. Very disapppointing loss by Ga Tech. I was hoping that the ACC would get a great start in the bowl season with a win by Ga Tech. Well so much for that. However, Ga Tech supporters don’t lose hope in CPJ just yet. I can remember when Va Tech came close to letting Frank Beamer go after his intial years of mediocre football. It’s only one season for now. However, in this era of “what have you done for me lately” coaches have a lot smaller time window to demonstrate program success than in the past.

The fact is, we are in trouble. Serious trouble. Talent is one thing, but what we have seen this year, consistantly, reflects a lack of coaching. Nobody gets snakebit that much. It is poor coaching. This team has poor techniques, bad tackling, bad blocking, and a “scheme” that includes no provision for making a comeback. We can’t throw, and nobody can catch. This has been going on all year. He has nobody on this team who can field a punt? Or catch a pass hitting them in the hands? Come on. The defense played much better, give them credit. If Washington is the best we have at QB, we are in bad trouble. Do we even HAVE a special teams coach? I think not, but if we do, he should surely be fired. We can’t catch a punt, Or cover a fake punt? Somebody needs to tell CPJ to listen to himself. Don’t tell us, big shot, show us. This year was an embarrassment of immense proportions. Nobody seemed to care enough to play better. That’s bad coaching.

Hey CPJ,

Who is responsible for not recruiting adequate linemen for 2 years? (Both sides)

Since you run an option that depends on a strong line?

If you lose a game by three points or less does a field goal matter? After bragging on your kicker?

Just asking – as no “reporter” has asked.

GT grads are not stupid. Answer some questions or stick your head in the sand like CPH.

He’s 0-3 in bowl games and 1-2 against 3 very bad Georgia teams. He’s taken the program backwards after an ACC Championship. No excuses about NFL, academics, etc. High school offense with no passing game won’t work. This is unacceptable. Put those gold colored glasses away.

The only thing more pathetic and miserable than our team this year is a sorry mutt supporter. I have long supported CPJ but I am not so sure now. No heart in this team. Don’t understand a QB who fumbles on the 3 and is grinning on the side line. Did not see much desire from the coaching staff either. Two dropped punts? Fumbles, can’t throw the ball ten yards but we continue trying the fifty yarders. Stupid play calling – which is coaching. I will stay with CPJ one more year but if this team doesn’t show some GT heart and effort on the field

I feel for ya, Tech fans–another self-destruction which can be pinned almost solely on being outcoached. The Jackets had the talent edge in this game and lost because of key errors (turnovers, muffed punt, etc). Odd that both major-college Georgia teams are such mirror images of underachievement and are fundamentally unsound at many areas. Only difference: Georgia’s got better talent. The Jackets lose a lot off of this team–I suspect that next year will be more of the same, and another losing record seems quite possible. Georgia doesn’t lose as many numbers-wise, but AJ’s imminent departure takes the team’s biggest playmaker to the next level. How the defense plays next season will go a long way towards determining whether Georgia can shake off its funk.

Watching the Atlanta game tomight, it’s clear that Brian van Gorder was a big part of Richt’s early success in Athens. We sure miss him!

Honestly, Tech played well enough to win.

But IO want an honest assesment of Paul Johnson and the future of Tech football from a Tech fan. ARe you comfortable running this scheme, seeing the downsides to it after 3 years? Honestly, you beat UGA by stroke of mis-tackling luck in 2008, and won a VERY weak ACC last year (only to be embarrasses in a BCS bowl), and now this year.

You have seen what will take place in that scheme without a Nesbitt-like QB. You are about to find out what it is like without a QB and a power back. Roddy Jones is not going to do it for you next year.

I need say nothing about recruiting.

If you are happy with it, fine. But I personally am glad UGA does not have the same troubles you have (despite UGA without a doubt having troubles, don’t get me wrong).

So what do you think Tech? Is the Triple Option what you want run in the ACC caliber football??

I’m trying not to be the typical dawg fan, but Tech’s troubles are mountainous. Your recruiting is shot for 2011. Not so much that you lost to a service academy, but because CPJ is a jerk. 18 year old kids who have been worshiped for their football abilities all their lives do not like playing for jerks. Especially ones who coach losing ACC programs. The offense begins with the quarterback. No high school quarterback worth his salt wants to play for a one dimensional running offense. Finally, there are no hot chicks at Tech, and that is why you will always lose to Georgia! Could not help that last one.

Sorry macrotech, but CPJ had 15 Starters coming back for this season. plue key reserves like Orwin Smith, 15 starters is more than most Teams have coming back most seasons, with that returning Talent vs. the 70th toughest schedule AND playing in a crappy ACC where Klimpson, Miami, and UNC were down should have resulted in an 8 or 9 win season.

The Reason we didn’t have that 8-9 win season is that CPJ is a crappy Recruiter and his RS-Fr., T-Sophs, and RS-Sophs were not ready to step up.

Remember that CPJ marveled at HOW YOUNG we were in 2008 when he beat UGA.y, well you can’t be YOUNG in the 2008 and then complain about being young AGAIN in 2010.

We beat UGA.y with a bunch of Sophs. that Chan recruited and now that CJ’s Recruits are at LEAST Sophs. they are not able to contribute to wins because they lack the TALENT that Chan’s Recruits had.

change your offense and the lame triple option and things will change…..and this is from a uga fan. seriously, this package does not work…recruit qbs who can pass. when you run the ball 98% of the time, your more prone to fumbles and whatnot. get a serious offense, not some crap scheme.

If any of you were real Tech fans you would stop with the comments and look at the actual future. The only OB on this team with ANY experience was a guy who absolutely could not hit the side of a barn with a pass if he was standing 3 feet from it (Nesbit). He was replaced by Washington who had been on the field exactly 3 plays. Tech has reshirted talent out the rear end. Perkins, an AJC top 15 RB is on the field next year, Ayers-a top 15 defensive back from 2 years ago will be coming off a redshirt, Isiah Johnson is another top 25 DB out of the state, who will be starting after being in a back up role this year ( because he was not red shirted= young). NoMoreHewitt

Four observations from a long-time Tech fan:
- Hardly any mention here of the injury to J. Nesbitt. He was our team, folks. Without him, the offense just wasn’t the same. EXCEPT –

- Vs the the Georgia doggards. This “Jr. High offense” ran it down their pathetic throats all night long. We completely outplayed them and lost only because of their insurmountable luck in this series. So they can keep crowing if they like: they are pathetic losers who don’t even know enough to sit down and shut up.

- I really hate this TO offense and I don’t think it is feasible to expect to win with no passing dimension whatsoever, or, for that matter, without a lot of passing ability. Just isn’t done in today’s football.

- I have been turned off on Coach Paul Johnson. His intransigent insistence on running this stuff is destroying our program and I hope he leaves or changes very, very soon. But I don’t think he will leave because I don’t believe any other division 1 school, other than a service academy, would have him.

Mama Says

December 28th, 2010
1:54 am

To continue—we also have a back QB (this year) in David Sims who CAN pass the ball and is just as big as Nesbit. But to top everything off Tech fumbled the ball 6 times in the pass two games. 3 of those wereinside the other teams 10 yard line.

With no fumbles we easily beat Georgia, Kansas, Va. Tech, Air Force and Miami and yes I said easily !

Fumbles are not a coaches fault. These kids have played football their entire lives they should know how to carry a ball and when to cover it !

Bottom line Tech killed themselves this year, the offense was not “stopped” by any other team, they stopped themselves.

11-2 is what they SHOULD have been–if they hold the ball you are bragging about back to back ACC championships and how good the future is.

Oh one more thing–The Gailey recruited non throwing QB known as Nesbit–broke his arm trying to tackle the Va Tech player after he threw him the ball as if he was a Tech WR, as he was in the end zone. So I guess you “it’s Gailey’s players” people would have to write that game off as lost by Gailey instead of Johnson, right ?

GTBob is delusional if he thinks Georgia Tech fans don’t go on the Georgia Blogs, and pose as “georgia fans”. GTBobblehead, when are you going to face reality, and start to put some blame on your “genius” coach Blow Johnson? Here are some facts for GTBobblehead and the other tech nerds.
Since he has been the coach GT is 0-3 in bowl games, and has only scored 2 offensive touchdowns in those 3 games. You really think Paul Johnson isn’t to blame for any of that? GT got their butts kicked bad to LSU, because Georgia Tech players were still living off their first win in many years against Georgia. When players aren’t prepared that falls on the HEAD coach, even if you don’t want to accept that fact. I wonder what the “moral victory” Georgia Tech nerds will use for their loss in the bowl game to Air Force? I’m going to guess and say “we only lost by a touchdown, and that’s because we had some players suspended for the game”. If that’s the case, than no matter how you look at it Paul Johnson is to blame for the loss, because he’s the one who made that decision to suspend the players.
Did Georgia Tech hire Paul Johnson to win a National Championship & be able to compete with Georgia? If that’s the case, GT is getting ripped of by Paul Johnson, because he hasn’t even done both. Sure, you have kept the games close, but you still lose them.
Blame the GT players all you want for losing the games. If you’re players keep losing the games, than it’s because you’re not recruiting top 5 star athletes. If the recruiting is bad, than that would be Paul Johnsons fault, but I’m sure you GT fans will give some excuse for him like always. Please, don’t use the excuse “gt has high standards, so it’s hard to recruit top 5 star athletes”. Chain Gailey had no problem recruiting great receivers like Calvin Johnson & Demaryius Thomas. Paul Johnson will never have a great recruiting class. because great players who have the NFL on their mind don’t want to play in the triple option.
Yes, Chan Gailey never was able to beat Georgia. Chan Gailey also never had a losing season while coaching at Georgia Tech. Paul Johnson brought GT’s first losing season in 15 years.
Don’t worry GT nerds, you’ll see this truth after next season when you have another losing season.

Gailey recruited Nesbit as a pro style QB yet he missed wide open recivers and backs MORE THAN HE HIT THEM.

Washington is young and needs to develop arm strength–but he DOES not have the arm strength needed for a college level QB as of now.

I do believe that IF tech gets a QB who can throw the ball you will see a more prolific passing attack. Not to say it will become the base offense but it will open up the field.

We have yet to see what CPJ can do with a QB who can pass, you saw a hint of it in this game Jefferson is a QB at Air Force who can throw when needed and do it on target.

To answer your question Mark Richt has been at Georgia for 10 years, and has a record of 96–33. If you’re going to argue that’s a bad record, than you obviously didn’t go to Georgia Tech. Also, Mark Richt is 7-2 in bowl games. What is Blow Paul Johnson’s record in bowl games? 0-3
Mark Richt’s first 3 seasons as head coach he went 32-8 (3 wins against Georgia Tech). Paul Johnson’s record as Georgia Tech’s coach is 26-14 (1-2 record against Georgia). If Georgia really sucks, than GT has to suck more, if they are losing to a “horrible” Georgia team under a “horrible” coach.

Getting tired of CPJ and this offense. Also, Poor recruiting, poor execution. Time for a change; change the offense or change the coach. Ga Tech is a top Academic Institution but is not serious about Athletics, why?, in Football and Basketball we are losers. If we want to be the best, then we need to rethink our programs. Who has CPJ recruited that the NFL will want down the line? Maybe a couple of defensive players. Last year we won the ACC, went to the Orange Bowl but dropped our last two games to Georgia and in the Orange bowl. Not good to me. I have supported Tech a very long time but this is looking like the Pepper Rogers era all over again. If we are going to try to be a top Academic and Athletic School, we need to look at what Stanford, Michigan, and even Auburn (yes, Auburn is a fine academic school); need to play by the same rules as your opponent or you will lose more often than them. Add some education courses, our state needs more good teachers and our high schools overall are poor. We are putting our Athletes under too much pressure with the limited course offerings we have. Come on, Georgia BOR, quit protecting UGA Football and let Tech add Education Majors. We already are a University and you added Engineering at UGA. Fair is fair or are you BOR members just about UGA Football?

I really think it is time to sack the whole coaching staff and start all over. 6 bowl losses in a row! Of course, last years bowl vs. Iowa was a much bigger disgrace, so maybe this is an improvement. Our team is poorly conceived and poorly prepared. When will Johnson come to grips with the fact that something is not working and try something else? For example: Getting stuffed over and over on 3rd and 8? Is there not a play they know that is designed to get 8 yards? Don’t tell me, Coach, that they are all designed to go all the way if everyone “executes.” None of your people have executed all year and you stick to the same BS. I am sick of it.

Also only gt fans brag abt gaining 400+ yds against uga they also ran abt 30 more plays, controlled the ball for 17 mins more than uga and still lost the game! uga held tech to abt 5 yds per play on 97 plays. uga ave 8yds per play and abt 90 less total yds so looking at the complete stat sheet uga kicked your butt! First of all, I am a UGA fan, but I think there are some GT fans who will agree with this. If we don’t have our epic meltdown for a quarter in the GA/GT game in 2008, would Coach PJ be thought of as such an offensive genius?
Secondly, it’s official….both GT AND UGA are bad and neither is going anywhere soon.

Real TECH Grad, we are not serious about athletics? Just last year we had an ACC winning football team, a basketball team in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament, a baseball team hosting the regionals again and plenty of other competitive sports outside of that. You want to be like Stanford and Michigan? Between 2006-2008 Stanford was 10-26 in football. They were even 1-11 one year. They are just fortunate that Andrew Luck decided to go there. Michigan is 15-21 in the past 3 years. We are having a bad season in football and basketball. Take it like a man and quit whining.

Your team was unprepared, unmotivated and undisciplined all year. Do you realize we had at least one turnover in the red-zone in EVERY game this year? Chan Gailey took his recruits to the ACC Championship the year before he was fired. Johnson took Gailey’s recruits to an ACC Championship the year after he was hired. But now that he is playing with his own recruits, he has a losing record playing in a weak conference. Top notch players do not want to go to a Division 2 style football program. btw: Stanford proves it is not the academic standards. It is the players they are bringing in, and that gimmick game they try to play. They are literally incapable of throwing a completed pass downfield. On that last drive with the time running, they were only able to throw 5 yard patterns.

Most of you guys have the football IQ of a dead cat. What do dropped passes, fumbles, special teams blunders, and bad third down defense have to do with Coach Johnson’s play calling and offensive genius? These have been the story of the season. Every coach has those teams that he can’t just seem to teach (2007 Alabama, 2010 Georgia, 2008 Clemson etc…). It’s about players making plays and gaining confidence in themselves, and this years Tech team was a terrible one.

My two cents:

If T Washington wins the starting QB job next year Tech is in for anouther 5/6 win season at best. Why CJP did not give Sims solid playing time after Washington’s play the last 3 games is crazy. Only game Washington looked pretty good in was when Nesbitt got hurt against Va Tech. If Washington is that much better then Sims we better hope Vad signs. If not I say keep the guy that just committed at QB instead of LB.

Nice to see Defense play a real nice game, played AF better then Oklahoma, Utah, and all other. Attuachu and I Johnson are going to be solid players.

Put one one the kick returners out there. If there is no one else who can catch a punt that’s his fault and that’s pathetic. He needs to get a QB who can throw, and receivers who can catch. He needs to incorporate more short passes to backs out of play action. He needs to get a kicker and punter and someone who can coach the defense as well a special teams coach. I actually thought the defense played the best I have seen against the run this year. Our punt returner getting hurt was really the story of the game. Without those two mishaps, I think GT wins the game. But, not the coaches fault OR the substitute punt returner. I can’t remember when I have seen another punt returner other than #37 back to even receive a punt. I know he has done it in practice, but practice a little different from the actual ballgame. We have recruited 17 players coming in next year and if the REAL GT fans will look at them and see the size on the OLs, DLs and LBs coming in you just might actually look forward to next year as I am. If any of you were real Tech fans you would stop with the comments and look at the actual future. The only OB on this team with ANY experience was a guy who absolutely could not hit the side of a barn with a pass if he was standing 3 feet from it (Nesbit). He was replaced by Washington who had been on the field exactly 3 plays. . . ..
_______________________________________

Well, i’m certainly not a “real tech fan”, but I do know how to spell Nesbitt’s name. I’m a Dawg fan myself, but no one in the state of Georgia will be happier to see Nesbitt graduate than myself. That kid is a flat-out competitor and winner. I’m sure every other team Tech plays will be much happier to see any other gt QB lining up behind center than Nesbitt.

I’ve been saying this for over a year now, but no tech fan wanted to hear it. Johnson’s inflexibility when it comes to his offense will be what does him in. If he continues to put the QB under center instead of in the shotgun when it is 3rd down and longer than 6, he’ll continue to lose. Tech’s linemen are not big enough to effectively pass block for very long since Johnson basically recruits high school tight ends and turns them into linemen. So instead of giving his QB one extra second, he keeps him under center. It hurt Nesbitt at times last year and this year, and will hurt any QB that plays in his system.

I am a Dawg fan, but I am also a football fan. I thought it was a shame that Nesbitt didn’t get to finish out his career on the field instead of the sideline. And seeing tech people go from Nesbitt followers to putting him down . . . well, any “real” tech fan would have told you where to go.

The Tech fans I spoke with are not calling for Johnson’s head, this site is a bunch of frustrated UGA trolls and not true indication of Tech fans’ opinions. Most jacket fans still support 2 time ACC coach of the year and last year’s ACC Championship coach. Losing 4 juniors to the NFL last year, one year of poor recruiting during coaching transition, suspensions, loss of starting senior QB. etc all caught up to the team this year. We are going to be fine in the long run.

No one expected Tevin to put up the points like Nesbitt. Tevin, likely, will not be the starter next year, as we have redshirts and true freshmen that are much better fits. The defense came to play. It was clear that Tech had larger, faster athletes than AF, dont know where the recruiting comments are coming from unless UGA trolls. Allen ran hard.

As Johnson says, turnovers were the difference. As a long time Tech fan, I was as frustrated as anyone watching the jackets play in a crappy bowl making ‘first game of the season” mistakes. The loss had nothing to do with passing the ball or not passing the ball, recruiting, etc.

Maybe we should hire the Air Force coach…at least his option attach shows different looks and mixes in the passing game instead of the bull headed CPJ that runs the same freaking set and play over and over. Only 7 against Air Force and losing to 6 unranked teams – inexcusable

Are you saying that I’m lying? You can check the depth chart if you want. Unless you think he should kick all of the upper classmen off the team just so he can say he is using his own players. CPJ really didn’t have much impact on the 2008 class because of when he got the coaching job. So he basically had the 2009 and 2010 classes. Any players he decided to red shirt get delayed another year so you are looking at mostly Freshman and some Sophomores recruited by Johnson. This will even out more next year, so give it a little bit of time.

Did CPJ churn out more rushing yards? Did GT own the stats?? Because if they did, then, they really WON the game. This area is the ONLY area that matters …………….. rushing stats. See the UGA game to validate this point.” GT defeated UGA” because GT had 4,575,000 yds rushing on UGA. Right???

This is always the GT logic. Sad, pathetic and the GT lore of many, many years ago wth Billy Lothridge, Ted Davis and Billy Martin and Larry Morris, Johnny Hunsinger, are long, long ago in the 1950s to the early 60s and today’s GT team are a joke and are pretenders to that long ago GT lore.

CPJ is in trouble because GT has a new football coach every 4 years dating back to when Dooley ran Bobby Dodd off in 1967. Dodd, Fulmer, Carson, Rodgers, Curry, Lewis, Ross, O’Leary, Gaily, and now the current clown …………………… the genius CPJ. He is OWNED by UGA’s Coach MR.

Further, my partner and I are some of the biggest men’s swimming fans in the city, and I can’t tell you how passionate I am about basketball. However, the state of our athletics is saddening. We have a basketball team that has lost to Kennesaw and Siena, a football team who lost to Air Force and our men’s water polo team lost to Mercer. MERCER! Does anyoe like watching the Offence CPJ runs? It’s so boring. When you run the ball every play, there are going to be fumbles. When you never know where the play is going, the player with the ball has to think about more than just holding on to the ball. CPJ also always comes across as an angry know it all in post game interviews, something that i would find hard to rally behind as a player. He also seems to fail to see that Modivating his players is about 30% of his Job. I also bet that practice is mind numbingly boring to work on the same play over and over and over. He needs to work on installing a bunch of passing plays to keep the team interested in practice. If the O does not look different next year, it’s going to be a long year. CPJ also needs to do his job and make modivating his players a top priority.

Serious question for techies; how long will you give CPJ? I know he started out like a house on fire, but it seems he may have done all he can do. I know he won the ACC last year, and promptly got slaughtered in the bowl game exactly like he did against LSU in the Chick-fil-a bowl in 08′, but it appears the program is seriously moving in the wrong direction. Without Willie Martinez, CPJ would be 0-3 against Georgia, would that change the attitude of tech fans? I am not attacking tech; I am really curious as to how long tech will give CPJ.

Also, does CPJ’s personality annoy tech fans like it does the rest of the world? I admire competitiveness and confidence as much as anyone, but CPJ takes it too far. At what point in life does CPJ force himself to say; “the other team just played better than we did” or “Coach __________ really had them prepared”? I have never seen a D-1 coach who whines and makes excuses after a loss like CPJ.

I don’t know if you guys have a national championship coach. I’m not sure what we have anymore. Last year when Johnson was the darling and Richt was the idiot I would remind people that Richt won the SEC and the Sugar Bowl in his second year at Georgia. It is hard not to go chips in after a turn around like Johnson had but that is also how you guys got stuck with the Hewitt mess. The guy can obviously coach. I think in the long run it is going to be tough to recruit big time guys on defense.

The media loves to pounce. There will be a storm in Athens next year. That should give enough fodder for 2011. If Johnson doesn’t turn it around next year the papers will provide the soap opera in 2012. No one cares about the facts. Look at ESPN today. Brees is the hero and now they look like they are going to repeat according to ESPN. The Saints defense was the hero last night and I’m not sure who the best team in the NFC is now. The Saints and the Falcons looked pretty evenly matched to me but I guess I was watching another game.

I wish there was a site where reasonable fans could talk football. I am a Georgia grad so I’m not rooting for Tech but you do represent the State and it was obvious that the 2 teams were at best equally matched talent wise. There should be 3 dominant teams in ACC FSU, UM, and Tech, but Tech’s recruiting is really lacking. In a talent rich state like GA there is no excuse that the other BCS team has to win recruiting battles with the Middle Tennessee’s and Marshall’s of the world. Also, Tech and Air Force ran the same offense but Air Force seemed to have many more wrinkles in their attack. Finally, even I didn’t like how the announcer’s clowned Tech. I say this with the hopes that we don’t lay an egg against UCF. If both programs have top notch programs the state of Georgia can get the hype Texas and Florida get for being dominant in football. 4 losses:
Dwyer, D. Morgan, M. Burnett and Thomas…

These were huge. Anthony Allen performed well but the others were not replaced with talent that was even close to their level. Thomas may have been the biggest loss. There were few receivers in the country, let alone at Tech, who were as good.

Hard to look at recruiting and tell anything. FSU gets 4 and 5 star athletes every year and this is the first year since 2005 that they have been in the Championship game. Georgia is loaded with 4/5 star players and they went 6-6.

Is anyone here old enough to remember that Auburn finished #3 in the country utilizing the wishbone in 1983? The were 11-1 and beat 4 top 10 teams in their last 5 games (granted Bo Jackson may have been the best college RB ever). The only issue I see with this offense is lack of creativity. I don’t think our O-line can pass protect well enough to set up pass routes 10-12 yards down the field. Why not counter this with some screens and quick tight end release routes? With linebackers playing up in the box, the field should be wide open 6 – 8 yards past the line of scrimmage. Hit a few of these high percentage passes and the defense would have to loosen up. Being one dimensional is a problem against disciplined, well coached teams. Wrinkles need to be added.

Just a few thoughts…

GTBob, Stanford has a football tradition equal to GT. The AD, Bob Bowlsby, didn’t like the state of the program so he went out and found a coach to address it. He seems to have found a guy in Jim Harbaugh to do just that. The AD didn’t buy into the theory that tough academics make it impossible to succeed in football (or basketball, or baseball). Andrew Luck has been a game-changer, but he was recruited by Harbaugh, coached by Harbaugh and his staff, and plays in a system that can take him and any of his teammates to the next level. Harbaugh, like other top coaches, leaves no aspect of the game untouched. He has a special teams coach and actually spends more than ten minutes a practice focusing on special teams. CPJ would be well-served to do the same.

And BTW, Stanford has won the NCAA Director’s Cup 16 years in a row, scoring in 28 sports even though the rules limit scoring to the top ten performances in men’s and women’s sports. GT only fields eight men’s sports and seven women’s sports. What’s up with that?

Again, let’s state the obvious: if a team has time to prepare for this triple option, it can stop it (look at the last 3 bowl games with weeks to prepare). If a team has seen this offense over the course of a few years, it can stop it. In short, Paul Johnson is a”Johnny One-note,” the gild is off his rose, he has been exposed. No talented recruit wants to play under this scheme, hence the drop off in highly ranked recruits in the past two years (and this recruiting year ending in February). No major college in FBS will succeed in the long term running this gimmick “O,” and lastly, after seeing it the last few years, I’m just incredibly bored to death by it. Even when we win, it’s just a bore. Fans cannot accept BOREDOM and Johnson’s playbook is a BORE.

What can I say, I am a huge Georgia Tech fan, I have been with them a very long time, but I can only say I totally agree with the statements of “JacketFan12″, “Reality”, “Go Gold” and “BamaJacket” and the Tech’s AD needs to read this info also, I’m sorry, we are just bad. The really bad part is the few good recruits we do have (not signed yet) are really not want to play for a coach and system like that, how can Coach Johnson get angry at anyone for taking visits, he’s not holding up on his part of deal, it is what it is!!!!! (That offense was ok at first because it was a new look to everyone, but now, everyone has the player to stop it, Coach Paul Johnson its time to make a CHANGE, either your offense or your JOB!!!)

I hope CPJ learned one thing this year. YOU NEED TO EXPAND THE PASSING GAME AND RECRUIT QBS THAT CAN RUN AND THROW. IT WILL NOT HURT GETTING A FEW PLAYERS THAT CAN CATCH THE FOOTBALL TOO…Other teams are catching on to defending the ” triple option ” and your very limited passing attach. If you can’t throw and complete something other than a 20 + yard seam or out route we will never loosen up the line of scrimmage and make the run successful. ( Look what Coach K at Navy has done passing the ball while still running your triple option ) There are other sections of the field that can be attached by the passing game. ACC champs in year two was great but stepping backwards in year three is not what the Tech fan ordered..

I am amazed that here, I continually read where Tech fans are excited about their offense running up and down the field on Georgia….wow….get some pride guys, moral victories are losses…your expectations need to be higher….your offense is embarrassing and CPJ is not the genius that we keep being told he is….it’s one thing to be a fan but quite another to be an idiot…

how we beat Duke is beyond me, I do remember Mario Butler stepping in to intercept and score otherwise we would have lost that game too..

It is just a p!ss poor excuses all around and once again I love GT football but this was too discouraging..

Just know DRAD, GT fans put up with the basketball program imploding because the football team was successful, but do not expect GT fans to put up with both failures.

Next time anyone sees Jeff Monken or Bill Curry sniffing around for players how bout being a little concerned, we could have used Jaybo Shaw and Joseph Gilbert.

Real Jacket fans unite. We won over 20 games the first two years and this was a down year. We lost our Senior QB near the end of the season and still should have beat UGA between the cesspool. Once we get Vlad Lee next year things will look up, just look at WV for four years when they got Pat White. They also drubbed UGA in the Sugar Bowl his freshman year. Also, this was the first year switching to the 3-4 defenese. I thought 7-5 or 8-4 was realistic until we lost Josh. GT will be back and CPJ will Rule This State long after the puppies run CMR out of town next year. THWG!

Rushing yards: Georgia Tech 279 – Air Force 170

Total Offense: Georgia Tech 320 yards – Air Force 287 yards

Georgia Tech’s Julian Burnett led all tacklers with 13, nine solo …

Turnovers: Georgia Tech 4 – Air Force 0 …

What do you think would happen if the 4 turnovers hadn’t happened? Well, Tech would have had the ball longer, and Air Force less, meaning the rushing yards would have been skewed towards the Jackets favor even more, and perhaps (probably) the score would have been a bit different as well. Now take into consideration the 7 suspended players…How about Joshua Nesbitt getting injured and not being able to get back on the field?

I ask you, does this change anyone’s perspective?

Paul Johnson and his coaching staff can’t kick, punt, pass, catch, rush, tackle or heal. At some point, the players on the field have to produce, and they have to available to play to get onto the field. The players have to execute, once they have their chance to step on the field, and if several components of a team aren’t working well, then bad results happen. In this case, special teams fell apart and the passing game was non-existent. Injuries to key personnel, like the QB and new offensive linemen, may have had an impact, but that’s football.

Next year they start all over with a bit more experience and more players available who had taken a red shirt.

When Paul Johnson was at Navy, Navy’s 3-4 defense didn’t stop anybody consistently either, but the offense was able to outscore the other team most of the time. This year GT would move the ball, but then a fumble, penalty, or something would stop the drive, so that you couldn’t outscore your opponents. Groh Must Go!

If you think coaching isn’t to blame you are all idiots. Sure if it was one game I can understand but after watching this team all season they have no respect for the football and that starts with coaching pure and simple. GT is a circus clown act and CPJ is the ringleader. It starts with him. IMO he lost the Georgia game for Tech by eschewing a chip shot field goal and then getting stopped on 4th down. Stupid move. Last night we are driving and on 3rd and 3 with 21 seconds left we go for the endzone pass when 1 or 2 runs fir the 1st down or score was there. I understand we were out of time outs but you can’t leave time on the clock like that going with your weakest option.

Johnson’s offense now looks so inept and mistake prone as a rule. We have scored 17 total points in his 3 bowl games. Putrid. The future doesn’t look bright. Don’t see any Calvins or bebe on the rise. GT athletics as a whole is mired in a huge funk. DRad better get his head out of his arse and right the ship or we are going to be lumped with the Dukes and Virginias of the world and ACC doormats. I hope to God we didn’t give CPJ a Hewitt type contract. Time to get some excitement regenerated in the program. We don’t have the leaders or coaching right now for that to happen.

I watched that game, and i would not say the problem is entirely Paul Johnson. The players representing Georgia Tech had absolutely NO passion or drive for that game.

Tech had more talent, size, and speed (especially defensively) – but the Air Force Academy had more heart. Tech didn’t want to be there, while Air Force was excited about the opprotunity.

Also, the QB missed a wide open WR along the right sideline at the end of that game. Underthrew him by at least 10 yards. That is an issue that needs addressed.

If Paul Johnson kept the same offensive, but found a way to EFFECTIVELY throw the ball 15 times a game, it could be lethal. but without a passing game, Tech will always be a sitting duck if they ever had to score the ball quickly or play from behind

good luck in 2011, but what happened last night was pathetic

@Reality . If you know anything about football, you should know that turnovers and penalties are the result of poor coaching. Another mistake CPJ made was allowing McKayhan back on the field to field another punt. Another mistake was not kicking the field goal in the first half when they were clearly in range. Let’s keep going, CPJ is the head coach and has allowed the special teams to progressively get worse as the season progressed (save the field goal unit). Then you throw in the fact that when forced into a passing situation, he seems to think he can only throw it 30+ yards, instead of the occasional slant or 10 yard pass. But then again, what do you expect when so liitle emphasis is put on that NEW thing called “the forward pass”.
I watched Navy run HIS offense and it was very impressive to watch. I believe it can work in a BCS conference with a small mix of accurate passes much like Air Force did. But chucking the ball downfield 6-8 times a game completing 1-2 (hopefully) is a wasted effort and might as well take a knee.
His arrogance is writing checks his recruits can’t cash, but every week he blames it on their lack of execution. I’m losing faith in him quickly. He shrugs off 2 consecutive losses to GA (which I blame his playcalling for in both cases) and dismisses 3 consecutive bowl losses as if it were no big deal. Here’s your REALITY!

Why some players do it and others don’t is probably a mystery to all coaches.

It obviously is the difference in winning and losing.

It will be interesting to see what type of team we have next year. We gained some playing time for some younger players which can only help.

Here some quotes for you CPJ and this comes from a GT Alum
- We are a undisciplined football team?
- Turnovers are killing us and it’s on the staff to fix it.
- The staff did not prepare a backup QB over the last two years in the event we needed one.
- We are unprepared to run a two minute or for that matter a 5 minute offense when Air Force showed you can.
- The staff’s failed to develop a passing game and it’s cost us games. And we’ve not taught our receivers to catch a simple pass.
- I hired an excellent defensive coordinator but failed to tell him I didn’t recruit the talent needed to make him successful.

See, unlike UGA fans we call it like we see and aren’t delusional. UGA’s in Memphis not New Orleans. It’s the Liberty bowl! Tech fans also aren’t so delusional we call for our head coach to be fired after every loss! We simply call it like we see it. Now go tell everyone if you beat UCF that UGA is in the National Title hunt in 2011!

I have been a supporter of PJ from day one but adjustments are needed. First of a broader recruiting needs to be in place. Some of our best defensive talent can come from anywhere. Second, Fridge had the best offensive scheme at Tech (#1 in 1999/pass/run/option)…He had the FB, The TE, the pass and run and mobile QB. We should be able to use these A-backs more as slots and have at least an H-back option ala Whisenhunt in early 80’s. The mindset does’nt appear to be there in toughness. At least 4 games were winnable. Nesbitt no doubt is a winner but had experience. It’s hard for HC to be coordinators and keep in touch with all the details the game.

Are you not tired of winning the rushing stat and still getting a loss?

If all you do is run, a team almost certainly will have a high number of …rushing….yards. Coach Johnson may already know his QB cannot pass efficiently and does not attempt many…but until Tech does pass effectively, that rushing stat still means little.

Air Force was a quality opponent that Tech should have beaten and would have beaten if they don’t fumble it away.

Lack of speed at the QB position is a much bigger problem than the poor passing. Also seems the OL is struggling.

The defense needs improvement, but last night the fumbles lost the game, not the defense.

Fellow GT fans, please stop all the crying about CPJ and the 6-7 season. It happens from time to time to the very best programs in America. You really seen very spoiled after two good seasons and an ACC Championship last year. CPJ will win again at GT and eventually put a program together that will be consistent enough to have winning seasons every year with some championships mixed in. Yes, next year will be difficult until we get a more talented QB in the mix. But please, sick with your coach and the players and stop being spoiled sunny day fans. You sound like my kids who want instant gratification without having to work hard and suffer any setbacks along the way. After losing our 4 best players early to the NFL we knew this would be a tough year—and then our all ACC QB breaks his arm. I mean, come on, you don’t really think we have the depth and recruiting ability of programs like Alabama and Florida—do you? Not with the academic rigor of GT we don’t. But this is who we are in these modern times, a great academic institution who can still put together a good football team if we understand our limitations and let CPJ do his thing. The guy just needs a little more time and for God’s sake how about some support!!!

If you are a true football fan you would have to agree with my statement about Nesbitt (you happy with the spelling now).

Anyone knows that a football team has to have a QB that is at the minimum a threat to pass. Nesbitt NEVER was a threat to ANY secondary (unless he was running through it). I don’t have to appologize for making a negative statement about that fact.

This offense that you leg humpers love to degrade has out gained your defense in every game so far. Yes you have won 2 0f the 3, however I would hope that you would admit to yourself that you were lucky to win ANY of the three.

You should also admit that if Tech had a QB that could throw the ball you would have never been in ANY of those games to begin with.

It is a simple statement Nesbitt cannot throw the ball and that is a fact. It has nothing to do with his toughness or heart it has to do with the fact that he was a QB. A QB in an offense that ran up 550 yards on the Dawgs—without Nesbitt. I hope as a true football fan you would be able to recognize that if you were never able to stop the high school offense when you knew it was run run run, you would NEVER stop it if you had to defend 10-15 well placed passes each game.

I know this is not as big of an issue when we play the Dawgs since we do what we want to on the ground but against a tough team we need a QB who can pass with accuracy from time to time.

UGA has their own problems and Tech can’t hold a candle to the issues that program has to juggle on a regular basis. Hopefully Tech will never sink that low.

Johnson lost control of his team. The coaches should have a greater awareness throughout the semester regarding academic progress and deficiencies. The help is there if they want it. Violation of curfew should never be an issue. All of them let the team down.

It was flat wrong to bench players that were academically eligible by NCAA standards but not GT standards. Any sanctions should be administered either by Tech or NCAA in the next semester holding them out of spring practice or until they become eligible. Doing so for a bowl game cheapens the bowls etc. GT did not look good in any of this. Poor decisions are hurting the image of GT.

I’m obviously a UGA fan but I was rooting for Tech in this game. Seemed as if most of the players were out of shape, lethargic and didn’t give a _ _ _ n about the bowl. This was a great opportunity to start practice for next season but it didn’t happen; at least from my perspective. CPJ should seriously consider some other offensive sets and not put his offense into “high” risk fumble situations.I know 2 were by the second string punt returner but triple option offenses are very high risk.See you in Atlanta in November !!!!

Yep, we sucked this year. We might suck again next year but I’ll be there to find out. Interesting how the UGA supporters comment here on our high school offense isn’t it ? We did hang 500 yards on the UGA 4 and 5 star players didn’t we? I can accept we are 6-7 and we are exactly that, but keep in mind currently UGA is 6-6, nothing for the pups to bow up about over in the pasture. The difference is UGA fans, most who have never seen the inside of a college classroom, think they have something to brag about. We know we do not. I know the lose to AF was embarrassing but the lose to UGA at the dog bowl stadium was more embarrassing. They are a bad undisciplined team we should have beaten. Even though their fans believe they are always on the verge of a SEC and national title they are nothing more than an average team with over rated players and second tier coaches, and their record proves it year after year. We on the other hand know we will not win the ACC or contend for a national title every year even though we would like too. We know it, they are to delusional to figure it out. We played in our meaningless bowl now you puppies go play in yours. Good luck, if I remember G.O. was your Daddy a few years in a row.

Maybe some of the people on here claiming to be GT fans are actually GT fans and maybe not. But regardless unlike most of the people commenting on this blog, I was actually at the game! I too am disappointed by this season but I also see some reasons for hope. #1 – the defense played some inspired football, particularly in the 3rd quarter when GT turned the ball over 3 times. I haven’t seen our defense play that well in years. #2 – We WILL have a new QB to start next season. Tevin can’t run the triple option. That’s a problem for a triple option offense. #3 – Our schedule is easier next year. I am willing to admit that 2011 is a rebuilding year, but given our schedule, I don’t think we finish with a worse record. #4 – Even though its a rebuilding year, I like our building blocks. Why Rod Sweeting hasn’t been a starting CB all year, I’ll never know. I can think of five great Sweeting plays off the top of my head from this season; can’t think of one from our two starting CBs. Also, Burnett, Attachou, Sylvester, Cross, Johnson are all solid player on defense. On offense, I think we just have to find a QB. Everybody else will be fine.

Despite all of the defense/special teams issues, the bottom line is Tech is 24-2 under Johnson when scoring 25 points or more. Pitiful offensive performance against a team that Tech had a size advantage on. Need to get the offense back on track next year and it is going to take a small threat of passing the ball (like last year) to keep the opponents defense honest.

I can’t believe the garbage I’m reading here! Blaming this loss on Coach Johnson, is silly! Obviously, I am sure that the coaching staff could have done more, but this loss was all about the players screwing up! What do the coaches have to do with missed blocks, fumbles on the 5 yard line, passes dropped that hit the receiver in the hands, 2 punts dropped, etc.! Until Tech gets players who want to win, put in the time to prepare, care about winning, are dedicated, disciplined, etc., the coaches can only do so much! The first time someone smacks you in the mouth, all that coach rah-rah stuff is gone! We have to have players who want to win, like we did in 2008 & 2009! Coach Johnson’s system has proven itself at every place he has been! Coach Johnson is not the problem in my view! Now on the basketball side, that is another issue……

When do you start blaming the coaches for the players performances. If they go 0-12 next year, will you? I am not blaming CPJ for this one game, but I am for losing to 6 unranked teams. He recruits them and coaches them, so he is ultimately responsible. Keep drinking the kool-aid. I guess if Tech never wins another game, you will just say it is OK to keep the coaching staff because they are not the ones on the field. This just shows how stupid your comments are. The coaches are ultimately responsible for what happens on the field.

Chan made two fatal mistakes, 1) thinking Tenuta was some kind of defensive genius. and 2) thinking Reggie Ball was the next Kordell Stewart. Other than that, he recruited very well given his constraints and put a generally competitive product on the field (other than Ball). I am quickly getting unsold on Johnson. He can’t recruit and he will quickly get out-athleted in big boy football regardless of offensive scheme.

CloudmanJacket,
More disappointing seasons and the heat on CPJ will increase. But I am not willing to throw a coach under the bus one year after winning the ACC. CPJ was brought in to be an upgrade over Chan Gailey, and he has been. If we wanted to bring in an even better coach than CPJ, then we should’ve done it when Chan was fired. Are there better coaches than CPJ out there, sure there are. Would they come to Tech, that’s debatable. GT is a research-focused technical institute with 15,000 students… we are who we are. Let’s not pretend that we are UF, FSU or UGA. We need to attract different types of players from those schools and then get the most out of them. I am going to give CPJ an opportunity to do this. BUT I WILL SAY THAT IF TEVIN WASHINGTON IS THE QB NEXT YEAR, I’LL BE DISAPPOINTED!!!

Pass The Egg Nog

December 29th, 2010

CPJ is not the answer although everyone seems to think he is a genius and the best coach in the country. His players were not motivated or inspired or disciplined this year at all. Same story every game: mental mistakes, turnovers, stupid penalties that kill any drive = lose the game. That is all coaching and getting the team prepared. Quite frankly, GT should have lost to Wake and Duke! This was a a very easy schedule in 2010 and GT ended up 6-7. How is Johnson going to turn it around? Recruiting into that offense is very difficult. What linemen or receivers or throwing QB would ever weant to go play in that offense? GT’s program has basically become irrelevant and I don’t see that changing any time in the near future.

I have supported Washington since Nesbitt went down, but it is painfully obvious that he is not the QB for GTs future. I was praying the extra time would allow him to get better with the pitches to the a-backs but that game proved otherwise. Since the VT game GT has been a double option at best with most of the presure on Allen. I almost jumped out of the stands on the two muffed punt returns and wondered why Bostic was not thier when Tarrant got hurt. Obviously these coaches need to fix special teams and get Days ready to be the new starting QB next year, oh and can you get a WR that can catch and block. Hopefully GT can keep the recruits we have because I can’t see Cooper or any other that GT is currently trying to recruit coming now.
Congrats to the Air Force cadets they played hard stayed fucosed and deserved the win.

Ramblin Man,
Totally agree and I am glad someone else is willing to say it. CPJ and GT run a triple option based offense. That doesn’t mean we run a triple option every time, but we do typically run the triple option play about 40% of the time. Or I should say DID. Since Tevin has been in there, we have completely stopped running the triple option play. I assume that was done to simplify the reads for Tevin. The problem is that all of our other plays are based on success in running the triple option and spreading the defense out and making them account for all three options. Basically since Nesbitt went down, GT has been running their offense with one hand tied behind their back. Unless something changes between now and the start of next season, TEVIN IS NOT THE ANSWER!

Ramblin Man

I am disappointed in several of my other fellow GT fans if they are really even true fans or UGA fans in disguise. Yes CPJ and GT had a REALLY bad season and I am at a loss how the focus and itensity just was not there, but it was one bad season out of three. GT lost a lot of talent and some of the young kids just did not step up as soon as one would hope. The lack of depth at QB hurt and blame CPJ all you want for Shaw and Luellan transferring but it happens all the time just usually not two in one season. Next year I as a fan expect some serious changes and expect with the 09 and 10 defensive recruits for the defense to make huge strides and for the young O players to seriously step up. It was a hard year to be a Jacket fan, but I will always be true blue and gold and support this team no matter what. Hopefully Days, Perkins, Smith, Bostic, Jones, Moore, and some o-lineman (McRae, Uzzi, Beno, Jackson, Finch would be my guess) will get together in the offseason to get some serious timing and unity down. Hell ven Hill can come after some time with passing drills.

For all of you stating that “recruiting” is the problem here’s a little factoid for you. From 2002-2007, Chan Gailey’s average recruiting ranking on both Rivals and Scout.com was 38th and 45th, respectively. This is heavily skewed by the one year in 2007 in which he had the fantastic class of Dwyer, Burnett, Morgan, and Thomas. Several of the other years he was not even in the top 50 nationally on Rivals rankings.
Johnson was hired in 2008 and his average recruiting rankings are 41 and 47, respectively. This is without a year like 2007 in which Gailey had such a stellar class. By the way, for all you who are mentioning Gailey’s players…what did he ever do with them?
The numbers are clear. The recruiting is just about the same with Johnson as it was with Gailey. I would think his numbers would even be skewede against him because he’s not necessarily looking for 4 and 5 star recruits on offense. He’s looking for guys to fit his scheme.
Everyone is disappointed in the team this year, but please don’t argue that it’s because his players are worse that Gailey’s.

Cbah52, the myth that Chan Gailey was a great recruiter was created and perpetuated by UGA fans AFTER GT beat them in 2008. This myth was picked up by much of the ACC after we won that in 2009. After four GT players were drafted in the 2010 NFL draft, many UGA fans said “we told you so, it was all Chan Gailey recruits” despite the fact that these players played half their college football careers under CPJ and despite the fact that a football team requires 11 on offense and 11 on defense.
Look maybe there are really some GT fans on here that think CPJ should be fired, but I think most are UGA trolls. I will respectfully disagree with the true GT fans. As was pointed out earlier, GT had two back up QBs transfer as well as two senior OL transfer. I think those two things would hurt any program. Then we installed a new defense, which took time to get in place. I look at the progress made on the defensive side of the ball as very positive. In our defensive backfield I believe that several older recruits were rewarded for sticking around. Anyone who analyzes the play of the DBs this could only come to the conclusion that Rod Sweeting is the best CB we have, bar none. However, he was not a starter this year. So I am sure that anyone from the outside looking at our DBs for next year would be concerned about two graduating seniors, but I GUARANTEE that our CB play will be better in 2011 with Rod Sweeting and Louis Young manning the boundaries, and that in turn will make the whole defense better.

CPJ will make changes. He knows how to adapt. All you fair weather Jacket fans – go watch Georgia play cause they really know how to play the game with their 4 and 5 star recruits. The real Tech fans know that in building a program there are lumps to be taken. It’s utterly amazing how even the simplest football mind can grade our defense as an improvement. We played FREAKIN AIRFORCE, for goodness sakes….. We were supposed to hold them to 14 or less…. I would never have thought that this program would drop so low that it was finally competing at the same level as a service academy… Don’t get me wrong, I’m not dissing the AF team, they played with heart, and they were the better team. This leads to the real problem… This coach cannot recruit the type of player to compete even at the ACC level, which by the way, is WEAK. If this coach had a brain, he would hire an OC (Ralph) and hand the offense over. We will see that CPJ is much too arrogant to defer his belief in himself, and put the good of the Institute and the team first… Mark it down, the longer this coach recruits to this A$sinine system, the bigger the hole another coach will have to build us back to respectability…. IMHO

GT Football is in real trouble…Paul Johnson was a bad hire. I know he had success with his offense the first two years but with someone else’s players. He obviously is not a good recruiter and seems too stubborn to change his offense. He did a terrible job this year, his offfense is boring beyond belief, and he seems like he could care less if they win or lose. If this offense was so successful, them more teams than GT and the service academies would be running it. I don’t see the program getting any better next year with the same players and no recruits to speak of…at least Chan got players and had winning seasons!

I went and stayed with my auntie that lives in Clemson to go to the Tech game in Death Valley. That place were too much for Tech. And the CLemsons players pushing Tech around. And Tech could not score nothing. I was pulling for Tech but I knew early that that day was going to be trouble for Tech and it was. I also knew the rest of the season was going to be hard going.

Questions for GT Fans that are making excuses for CPJ:

Shouldn’t a Genius HC be able to fix the STs Issues after 3 f’n seasons and multiple losses of Games due to poor STs play?

Shouldn’t a Genius HC be able to install some sort of Pass-Blocking Scheme after 36 Months on campus such that the Team can have some sort of chance to WIN if they need a passing Game?

The CPJ kool-aid drinkers told us that Recruiting too many QBs & A-Backs wouldn’t NOT hurt depth at other positions, since these Recruits could EASILY move to other positions and “help GT win Games”; well now we have had JaBlow and Jordy Lou Allen transfer out, basically WASTING slots that could have added to GT’s depth and now we are also caught with too many 5-7 170lb. A-Backs that will NEVER make any sort of impact on winning games; to all you GT Toadies that make excuses for CPJ, NOW will you admit that this Recruiting Strategy by CPJ has hurt GT FB?

If NONE of the QBs Recruited by CPJ can pass worth a lick (Starters Included); then HOW can GT’s Defense simulate what they will see from opposing Teams in Practice when getting ready to play? (IMO this is part of the reason WHY CAG’s Defenses look so lost when playing Teams that can pass, even Dook’s QB torched GT for over 300-yds. passing)

Where in eFF was DRad when when CPJ put his Staff together and CPJ DECIDED to have 2 O-LINE coaches, but ZREO “dedicated” STs Coaches?

Another question; Does it really take TWO O-LINE COACHES to “teach” OLs to dive at a guys’ keeecaps, and while I’m at it, shouldn’t TWO O-LINE Coaches insure that GT’s O-LINE is the best pass-blocking O-LINE in all of CFB, since they have TWO coaches and all the other BCS Teams only have ONE O-LINE Coach?

What GT Fans don’t want to admit is that 100% of the PROBLEMS associated with GT FB are a direct result of CPJ’s poor decision making and not understanding “what it takes” to win AT THIS LEVEL of CFB

Now try and Defend CPJ on those issues all you Kool-Aid Drinkers.

WrexNFx,
Wow, I’d hate to work for you. You would be a total micro-manager and a jerk, critizing my every decision before even seeing the results. Were there problems with GT football, yes, but almost any program could say the same. Some of us take a longer term view of these things than you do, as we’ve been through 1-10 seasons (1994). Remember, George O’Leary was 11-14 before he lead Tech to four straight bowl appearances. Since CPJ has already done “what it takes to win AT THIS LEVEL of CFB”, your whole statement holds no merit.

bring back the classic white and gold uniforms, clean up the act on the matrix board, catch the football, hold on to the ball as you run with it and the fumble bees just might become the yellow jackets again.
