Cornerback Dominique Reese is one of 66 Georgia Tech student-athletes who are scheduled to graduate. The bachelor’s degree ceremony begins at 9 a.m. Saturday in Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
It will be a special moment for the Reese family because he is the first person in his immediate family to graduate from college. He completed his degree requirements in management during the summer.
“They are proud of me,” said Reese, who estimates there will be as many as 25 family members who will watch him walk. “My grandma didn’t care if I ever played football. She wanted to see me graduate.”
Among the 21 past and present football players are several redshirt juniors, including A-back Roddy Jones, linebacker Kyle Jackson and defensive end Jason Peters.
Each said they plan to continue their education and playing career at Tech, either by being accepted into graduate school or by pursuing a second major.
Here are the student-athletes who are degree candidates, a term Tech uses until final grades are audited and posted (courtesy of Georgia Tech’s sports information department):

Sanford, I’m not sure what to say. You were your normal self, then you showed a glimmer of class, then you were right back to your normal self. If only you had the ability to attend college, get a degree, and make something of yourself. But hey, if trolling the Tech blogs makes you feel successful in life, Congrats! What you think is all that matters. Other people laughing at your inability to succeed in life is not worth worrying over.

I am glad to see that the cheerleaders and student managers/trainers were also acknowledged – they put in plenty of time and energy supporting the athletic programs and a public “pat on the back” is welcome.
If you subtract out the cheerleaders and managers/trainers you get 50 scholarship athletes graduating. UGA has 39 graduating this semester.

Those of you who think trainers, cheerleaders, etc should not be included in this list are idiots. They work just as hard and often much longer hours than do the “players”. I think it hilarious (and sad) how many UGAly wonks come on to the Tech blog and make stupid comments. Your inferiority complex is pathetic. I am always impressed that any of the student-athletes at Tech can graduate, given the time commitment and exhaustion coming from the wrokouts from practice and competition. In defense of the MANAGERS and TRAINERS, they put in 8 hours per day with football during the week and even more on the weekends. They also don’t get the same access to the tutors and other athletic services that the players get.
I think it is a shame that some people would put these people down for the sacrifice that they are making to help make the teams successful. Congratulations to all of these soon to be graduates. Get used to the Red Coats calling you boss – remember you will control their bonuses.

So management is not the same as a degree in housing 65 and cmon man. Yes, it is a tough academic institution or it wouldnt be ranked 7th i the nation for public colleges or 27th in the WORLD!

AtlantaNative62

65Dawg, you are dead wrong about the Mgt degree not having to take calculus, chemistry, etc. There is a separate “math” track for mgt degree but chemistry, biology, etc are engineering courses and there is no management “substitute. I know this because I got the degree and I busted my butt to get it. But here is the difference between Tech and UGAly: I took the college placement exam and got 15 hours of math credit before ever setting foot on the UGAly campus. I then took advanced maths at UGAly (yes, I went there for a year). Guess how many of those 30 Math credits transfered to Tech? ZERO! So even advanced first year math’s at UGA did not measure up to basic “mgt” calculus at Tech. I also walked on and played at Tech. I saw how hard the trainers worked and again, they deserve to be recognized for the serious time they put in. Any fan – Tech or otherwise – is an ignorant fool if they don’t think managers/trainers should be considered student-athletes.

Anyone thinking the Management degree won’t also tan your hide for at least the first two years need to sit in on the core classes which are still required for it and then the subesquent accounting classes. Consulting firms in ATL consistently say that the curriculum in the Tech management undergrad is almost the same as an MBA. Very project-based throughout. And, yes, you can ask the players if the degree is tough. They do the projects just like everyone else. Now, whether other students let them off the hook until presentation time is a matter of school spirit I guess…but they have to make the grades in some tough classes. Certainly tougher than what I’ve heard about “recreation management” or “housing” or “turf sciences” or “social work” etc…

It’s hard to believe that the UGA trolls are berating our players taking Management. The Georgia Tech College of Management is one of the most respected business schools in the country. It is also offers the best MBA program in the state. Here are the national rankings of MBA programs for the some familiar colleges:
Georgia Tech…………………………#26
Emory (Goizueta)……………………#27
Georgia (Terry)……………………….#59
Georgia State (Robinson)………….Not ranked
So, in the state of Georgia you either go to Georgia Tech or Emory if you want a nationally recognized and respected business school. You go to UGA’s Terry College or Georgia State if you can’t get into Tech or Emory.
So, manyh of these Tech athletes have been through a rigorous curriculum in the nationally ranked and respected Management School. Did they go through the College of Engineering, which is one of the top 5 engineering schools in the nation? No, but they’ve been through one of the top business schools in the nation, and they deserve respect and acknowlegement for their accomplishments.
You UGA trolls that don’t know what they go through should just resign yourself to the knowledge that it is a lot more difficult to get through Tech than UGA. It has always been that way and is likely to always be that way. Your lack of knowledge of Tech degrees only shows your bias and ignorance.
JB

Also, Bloomberg rates Tech’s business school (College of Management) as the 25th best business school in the nation and #2, yes that’s #2, in job placement after graduation. The #1 business school in job placement is Harvard Business School.
So, say what you want Dawgs about the Management degrees these athletes are receiving at Tech, but they are far superior academically to the majority of degree programs even offered by UGA. If you want to belittle these athletes for choosing Management over Engineering just remember that the athletes at UGA pursue far less intensive courses on average than Tech athletes in Management. How many of UGA’s athletes do you think could compete at Tech in Management? Well, all of our athletes can compete at that level or higher (College of Engineering) at Tech.

@JB,
Easy. It’s not where you get your diploma, it’s what you do with. UGA and Tech are both very good schools. I know plenty of ulta successful business men who attended schools hardly recognized and had a 2.5 GPA while in college. That degree is ONLY something to look at if you can’t promote and prove yourself in the world and do something with it.

@Exposed: “It’s not where you get your diploma, it’s what you do with it.”
That’s true to ALL diplomas (or in this case degrees) and depends on the individual student/graduate. But the reason high potential students go to highly ranked colleges is to benefit from the high graduation and pay rates.
Just try your argument on a Harvard Business School graduate and try to convince him/her that their degree is inconsequential since it matters more “what you do with” your diploma than “where you get your diploma from.” They would be happy to show you how their degree helped to launch their careers and open the doors of opportunity. And yes, those that walk through those doors of opportunity and do something with their degree will prosper – at any institution. But more opportunities and a great career start usually result from going to a highly ranked college. That’s why “where you get your degree” is ALSO important to “doing something with it.”

@Exposed: “it is pretty closed minded to think only degrees worthwhile of recognition are for Engr or centered around math. The Japanese have NEVER won Pulitzer – why? little creativity”
What you have exposed is YOUR closed mindedness! First of all, I never stated that ONLY engineering degrees or math oriented degrees were worthy of recognition. YOU are the only one on this blog that has stated that. Secondly, the Pulitzer Prize is primarily for JOURNALISM, MUSIC, and BOOKS and in no way statistically relates to engineers or math professionals. Thirdly, you assume and reveal your bias regarding Japanese people as obviously being all or mostly engineers or math professionals. That’s preposterous, which also describes your assessment.

@holmes… Adding 6 to 66 equals 72 for you math challenged pup fans. As a Dawg you failed the math equation. Coincidence? I think not.
And for your poor attempt at religious humor, the sign 666 is the Mark of the Beast (the Anti-Christ) and not the devil. You puppies make fools of yourselves with your lame insults. We don’t have to try very hard in putting you in your place though.
Congratulations to our student athletes and thanks JB and others for setting the record straight with these mentally challenged leg humpers. THWG

NCAA is a joke! Money is all that matters to them anymore. Kind of like society. Well society is paying for it now and soon the NCAA will to.

Somebody explain to me how AJ gets 4 games for selling something that is his and Newton tries to get something that isn’t his (and don’t tell me his son didn’t know about it) and he doesn’t miss a game. If you believe he didn’t know anything about it you are showing nothing but your stupidity.

Seems like it should be one blog a year where you can only submit positive comments. I nomiinate the blog where student-athletes accomplish what they (allegedly) came to school for. Congrats to those who finished what they started. Many are called few are chosen.

I know this is a sports blog, but I just have to comment on the abbreviations. Someone asked for an explaniation of the abbreviations but said we could leave out BS, because “everyone gets on of those”. Actually everyone does not get one of those. The BSMGT at GT is a superior education to the BBA (Bachelor of Business Admin) at UGA. It requres only a few hours of basic math and a few hours of basic science classes. In fact, you can actually get a Bachelor of Arts in certain science cirriculums at UGA (figure that one out).

Son, that diploma from Tech or UGA will only get you so far. If you don’t have charisma, a stong work ethic, good communication skills and common sense, you are wasting your time and should have gone to trade school. Too many Techsters love to talk about the diploma and only feel comfortable with a slide rule – which is ok – I guess??.

Exposed, I totally agree with you. In fact, it should be pointed out that there are many very successful people that didn’t graduate from college at all. They used their charisma, a stong work ethic, good communication skills and common sense to advance in life. I am just pointing out the requirements and merits of a particular degree. In general, however, I would rather have more education than less and from a more highly ranked, well-connected university. GT grads like to hire GT grads, just as UGA grads like to hire UGA grads. Success breeds success. I know there are some people with charisma, a stong work ethic, good communication skills and common sense that are selling electronics at Best Buy.

Exposed – you must have missed college. You get a high school DIPLOMA (which you seem to be familiar with) and you receive a college DEGREE (which you don’t appear to be familiar with). Also, slide rules haven’t been used by anyone in decades. Conclusion: you’re over 50 years of age and finished high school but not college. You have been “exposed” to use your handle.

Look at all these arrogant morons from the trade school still thinking anyone gives a flying crap about their self styled “boss”ness over supposed UGA grads. I went to Georgia Southern, partied my ass off, and I’ve two Tech grads working for me. So, get over it.
A degree is just a piece of paper, and not all that hard to get. You can get a education from a school, but you can’t get intelligence.

66? So?
If there were 500 who should have graduated then 66 is a FAILURE.
Doug Roberson – a real writer would know that 66 is meaningless without knowing how many it’s out of. 66 out of 70 is great! 66 out of 500 sucks.

You said: “You can get a education from a school, but you can’t get intelligence.” Apparently you didn’t even get the education from Georgia Southern.
“…can get a education…” Should be “…can get an education…”
“I’ve two Tech grads…” Should be “I’ve got two Tech grads…”

Hey scam newton – I can tell you got your “edication” from UGA.
Have you bothered to see Cecil’s churches? Obviously, no money was received – and NO ONE has ever claimed they gave him money. And he provided all financials to the FBI.
Jealous much? Just because your puppies got SPANKED by superior athletes!!!

I’m a dawg season ticket holder, so some people may disagree with my statements. I believe a degree from Tech is a great accomplishment, and I appreciate Tech being willing to list all students associated with their athletic program, not just the athletes. These young people worked hard to do everything they do, and still obtain their degrees. It isn’t easy at any accredited school.
For those of you that claim this is a sports blog, and then take shots at people, this is college sports and college is a large portion of their lives. Praise to all.

I’m sure all the UGAG trolls in here are REAL proud of all the UGAG athletes graduating with degrees in “HOUSING” and
“Recreation & Leisure Studies”……….
……….after these student-athletes spent their
first 12 months in the UGAG’s infamous “DEVELOPMENTAL STUDIES Program”
(aka Remedial education) program.
I’ll leave you with the IMMORTAL WORDS of UGA Alum Hale Almand:
“We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”
It’s really hard to top this comment from one of UGAG’s very own alums.
UGA was a cesspool then, and it’s a cesspool now.

@Shreveport Hot Dog Vendor: “A degree is just a piece of paper, and not all that hard to get. You can get a education from a school, but you can’t get intelligence.”
…Obviously you have neither a degree nor intelligence. Just as obvious is the fact that you never went to college if you think a degree is just a piece of paper and “not all that hard to get.” I seriously doubt from your statement that you finished high school and I would venture to guess that the closest that you’ve been to a college is in a stadium seat. I will agree with one of your statements: “you can’t get intelligence.” You are correct and I’m sure you’ve faced the reality of that deficit your entire life.
And you Dawg fans wonder why we make fun of you!

GT loses to Sienna in basketball (Hewitt’s former team), and we hear the same quotes after the game: “we just didn’t execute our game plan” … “we just got out-played and out-hussled” … blah, blah, blah. Paul Hewitt is holding the entire GT basketball program hostage with his $7M contract buy-out and he is obviously more interested in his positions within various Coaches Associations than he is in actually making GT basketball successful. Merry Christmas, Paul … thanks for 10 years of destruction to a once-highly regarded basketball program.

Cloudman, get your head out of the clouds. Yes, Hewitt sucks. Paul Johnson won more in his first 2 seasons than any GT coach ever. We had a bad year this past season @ 6-6 but there were many extenuating circumstances (4 stud Jr.s going pro, new DC, QB breaking his arm). But you won’t hear excuses from Johnson like Hewitt. We are in good shape with the football program.
Basketball of course is in the toilet. Obviously DRad will not fire Hewitt in the middle of the season. But he will be gone at the end of the year. Losing to Kennesaw State, UGA on our home court, now Siena!! I can’t wait to see what the ACC record is going to be. No doubt about it, he will be gone.
