66 Tech student-athletes scheduled to graduate

Cornerback Dominique Reese is one of 66 Georgia Tech student-athletes who are scheduled to graduate. The bachelor’s degree ceremony begins at 9 a.m. Saturday in Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

It will be a special moment for the Reese family because he is the first person in his immediate family to graduate from college. He completed his degree requirements in management during the summer.

“They are proud of me,” said Reese, who estimates there will be as many as 25 family members who will watch him walk. “My grandma didn’t care if I ever played football. She wanted to see me graduate.”

Among the 21 past and present football players are several redshirt juniors, including A-back Roddy Jones, linebacker Kyle Jackson and defensive end Jason Peters.

Each said they plan to continue their education and playing career at Tech, either by being accepted into graduate school or by pursuing a second major.

Here are the student-athletes who are degree candidates, a term Tech uses until final grades are audited and posted (courtesy of Georgia Tech’s sports information department):

At least now we know what Tech does to keep its football team eligible

It puts them in the Business Management school

Way to make it look legit

I do agree that the right degree from Tech carries alot of weight. But you are fooling yourself if you think that most football players are getting those degrees. Just like all schools, formulas and majors are used just to keep them elligible. Tech is no different. But congratulations to all players that do fulfill their obligation and get their degree no matter what it is in.

As usual, UGA people show their lack of class and even understanding of how sports and athletics relate. It is very obvious that the UGA supporters, who comment here, have no academic experience of their own. Football is important…..but it is secondary to the purpose for which the schools exist.

Congratulations to all the student athletes across the state. The accomplishment alone is greater than any of the cheers you may have heard through your athletic career.

You will remember the cheers, but the degree will be what carries you through life.

Anyone thinking the Management degree won’t also tan your hide for at least the first two years need to sit in on the core classes which are still required for it and then the subesquent accounting classes. Consulting firms in ATL consistently say that the curriculum in the Tech management undergrad is almost the same as an MBA. Very project-based throughout. And, yes, you can ask the players if the degree is tough. They do the projects just like everyone else. Now, whether other students let them off the hook until presentation time is a matter of school spirit I guess…but they have to make the grades in some tough classes. Certainly tougher than what I’ve heard about “recreation management” or “housing” or “turf sciences” or “social work” etc…

I’ll go with a big Congratulations to my Ramblin Wrecks and GO JACKETS!

Great job fella’s! I went to UGA (no, I don’t work for a Tech grad), wouldn’t matter if I did as long as I keep making what I am. The UGA fans that post here never spent a semester hour on “our” campus and don’t have an idea how much a degree from the school you love means.

It’s hard to believe that the UGA trolls are berating our players taking Management. The Georgia Tech College of Management is one of the most respected business schools in the country. It is also offers the best MBA program in the state. Here are the national rankings of MBA programs for the some familiar colleges:

Georgia Tech…………………………#26

Emory (Goizueta)……………………#27

Georgia (Terry)……………………….#59

Georgia State (Robinson)………….Not ranked

So, in the state of Georgia you either go to Georgia Tech or Emory if you want a nationally recognized and respected business school. You go to UGA’s Terry College or Georgia State if you can’t get into Tech or Emory.

So, manyh of these Tech athletes have been through a rigorous curriculum in the nationally ranked and respected Management School. Did they go through the College of Engineering, which is one of the top 5 engineering schools in the nation? No, but they’ve been through one of the top business schools in the nation, and they deserve respect and acknowlegement for their accomplishments.

You UGA trolls that don’t know what they go through should just resign yourself to the knowledge that it is a lot more difficult to get through Tech than UGA. It has always been that way and is likely to always be that way. Your lack of knowledge of Tech degrees only shows your bias and ignorance.

JB

December 18th, 2010
8:36 pm

Also, Bloomberg rates Tech’s business school (College of Management) as the 25th best business school in the nation and #2, yes that’s #2, in job placement after graduation. The #1 business school in job placement is Harvard Business School.

So, say what you want Dawgs about the Management degrees these athletes are receiving at Tech, but they are far superior academically to the majority of degree programs even offered by UGA. If you want to belittle these athletes for choosing Management over Engineering just remember that the athletes at UGA pursue far less intensive courses on average than Tech athletes in Management. How many of UGA’s athletes do you think could compete at Tech in Management? Well, all of our athletes can compete at that level or higher (College of Engineering) at Tech.

@JB,

Easy. It’s not where you get your diploma, it’s what you do with. UGA and Tech are both very good schools. I know plenty of ulta successful business men who attended schools hardly recognized and had a 2.5 GPA while in college. That degree is ONLY something to look at if you can’t promote and prove yourself in the world and do something with it.

Since you brought in up. Based on info provided by the AJC a couple months ago, your football team isn’t exactly on the all academic team. Additionally. it is pretty closed minded to think only degrees worthwhile of recognition are for Engr or centered around math. @Exposed: “It’s not where you get your diploma, it’s what you do with it.”

That’s true to ALL diplomas (or in this case degrees) and depends on the individual student/graduate. But the reason high potential students go to highly ranked colleges is to benefit from the high graduation and pay rates.

Just try your argument on a Harvard Business School graduate and try to convince him/her that their degree is inconsequential since it matters more “what you do with” your diploma than “where you get your diploma from.” They would be happy to show you how their degree helped to launch their careers and open the doors of opportunity. And yes, those that walk through those doors of opportunity and do something with their degree will prosper – at any institution. But more opportunities and a great career start usually result from going to a highly ranked college. That’s why “where you get your degree” is ALSO important to “doing something with it.”

@Exposed: “it is pretty closed minded to think only degrees worthwhile of recognition are for Engr or centered around math. The Japanese have NEVER won Pulitzer – why? little creativity”

What you have exposed is YOUR closed mindedness! First of all, I never stated that ONLY engineering degrees or math oriented degrees were worthy of recognition. YOU are the only one on this blog that has stated that. Secondly, the Pulitzer Prize is primarily for JOURNALISM, MUSIC, and BOOKS and in no way statistically relates to engineers or math professionals. Thirdly, you assume and reveal your bias regarding Japanese people as obviously being all or mostly engineers or math professionals. That’s preposterous, which also describes your assessment.

I know this is a sports blog, but I just have to comment on the abbreviations. Someone asked for an explaniation of the abbreviations but said we could leave out BS, because “everyone gets on of those”. Actually everyone does not get one of those. The BSMGT at GT is a superior education to the BBA (Bachelor of Business Admin) at UGA. It requres only a few hours of basic math and a few hours of basic science classes. In fact, you can actually get a Bachelor of Arts in certain science cirriculums at UGA (figure that one out).

Son, that diploma from Tech or UGA will only get you so far. If you don’t have charisma, a stong work ethic, good communication skills and common sense, you are wasting your time and should have gone to trade school. Too many Techsters love to talk about the diploma and only feel comfortable with a slide rule – which is ok – I guess??.

Exposed, I totally agree with you. In fact, it should be pointed out that there are many very successful people that didn’t graduate from college at all. They used their charisma, a stong work ethic, good communication skills and common sense to advance in life. I am just pointing out the requirements and merits of a particular degree. In general, however, I would rather have more education than less and from a more highly ranked, well-connected university. GT grads like to hire GT grads, just as UGA grads like to hire UGA grads. Success breeds success. I know there are some people with charisma, a stong work ethic, good communication skills and common sense that are selling electronics at Best Buy.

I’m a dawg season ticket holder, so some people may disagree with my statements. I believe a degree from Tech is a great accomplishment, and I appreciate Tech being willing to list all students associated with their athletic program, not just the athletes. These young people worked hard to do everything they do, and still obtain their degrees. It isn’t easy at any accredited school.

……….after these student-athletes spent their
first 12 months in the UGAG’s infamous “DEVELOPMENTAL STUDIES Program”
(aka Remedial education) program.

I’ll leave you with the IMMORTAL WORDS of UGA Alum Hale Almand:

“We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”
