66 Tech student-athletes scheduled to graduate

Cornerback Dominique Reese is one of 66 Georgia Tech student-athletes who are scheduled to graduate. The bachelor’s degree ceremony begins at 9 a.m. Saturday in Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

It will be a special moment for the Reese family because he is the first person in his immediate family to graduate from college. He completed his degree requirements in management during the summer.

“They are proud of me,” said Reese, who estimates there will be as many as 25 family members who will watch him walk. “My grandma didn’t care if I ever played football. She wanted to see me graduate.”

Among the 21 past and present football players are several redshirt juniors, including A-back Roddy Jones, linebacker Kyle Jackson and defensive end Jason Peters.

Each said they plan to continue their education and playing career at Tech, either by being accepted into graduate school or by pursuing a second major.

Here are the student-athletes who are degree candidates, a term Tech uses until final grades are audited and posted (courtesy of Georgia Tech’s sports information department):

Big ups to Tech though for propping up their “student athlete” graduation rates by including trainers, equipment managers and cheerleaders in there. Just proves nerds really know how to manipulate those numbers.

Graduating from anywhere is a big deal and should come with congrats and admiration.. Congrats to these Nerds. I really do mean that. Congrats.

But since this is a SPORTS blog, I would like to also congratulate all the Football Players on this list for having a LOSING record against the School in which they despise and harbor the most hatred for.

UGA Football OWNS you.

But really, Congrats on your degrees. Management is a fine field, since it appears most couldn’t do the Engineering thing.

Congrats to all who are graduating. College graduation is a big deal in the real world. A college grad should make 100% more than a non-college grad.

Good job guys & gals.

WHAT?!?!?!?!?! Someone from the Paul Hewitt show is actually going to graduate??? Wow does that bump him over the unthinkable 5% graduation rate mark???? Really impressed Paul. Keep coaching those kids down, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down.

Sanford, I’m not sure what to say. You were your normal self, then you showed a glimmer of class, then you were right back to your normal self. If only you had the ability to attend college, get a degree, and make something of yourself. But hey, if trolling the Tech blogs makes you feel successful in life, Congrats! What you think is all that matters. Other people laughing at your inability to succeed in life is not worth worrying over.

glad to hear Roddy Jones, Kyle Jackson and Jason Peters will pursue another undergraduate degree if the Grad program doesn’t come through, that is GT’s 13th opponent on the schedule. Do not want to see anyone playing down the street next season. Roddy is a future politician waiting to happen anyway

Congrats to all of the graduates – good luck in your future endeavors.
I am glad to see that the cheerleaders and student managers/trainers were also acknowledged – they put in plenty of time and energy supporting the athletic programs and a public “pat on the back” is welcome.
If you subtract out the cheerleaders and managers/trainers you get 50 scholarship athletes graduating. UGA has 39 graduating this semester.

Those of you who think trainers, cheerleaders, etc should not be included in this list are idiots. They work just as hard and often much longer hours than do the “players”. I think it hilarious (and sad) how many UGAly wonks come on to the Tech blog and make stupid comments. Your inferiority complex is pathetic. Sanford Drive, you are the biggest moron I’ve encountered on any of these blogs. You keep posting the score of a game that was of no consequence. You did not beat us. We beat ourselves. So go back to your job pumping gas (I’m being generous here assuming you have a job – hey it’s the holidays) and quit being such a complete tool.

I am always impressed that any of the student-athletes at Tech can graduate, given the time commitment and exhaustion coming from the wrokouts from practice and competition. In defense of the MANAGERS and TRAINERS, they put in 8 hours per day with football during the week and even more on the weekends. They also don’t get the same access to the tutors and other athletic services that the players get.

I think it is a shame that some people would put these people down for the sacrifice that they are making to help make the teams successful. Congratulations to all of these soon to be graduates. Get used to the Red Coats calling you boss – remember you will control their bonuses.

Only 6 engineering degrees for the football players. I thought everybody got an engineering degree, and had to take Calculus, Chemistry, etc. And, of those 6, only 2 are scholarship athletes. Wow, what a tough acedemic institution!

Since tech is this high and mighty institute of higher learning bus mgmt must be for the people who wasnt to good in math! For all that will point out that tech’s “joke” major is management.
It’s ranked #22 in the US.
Thats tech, their “joke” major is 22nd in the nation and rated in the top 30 by numerous organizations.
So management is not the same as a degree in housing 65 and cmon man. Yes, it is a tough academic institution or it wouldnt be ranked 7th i the nation for public colleges or 27th in the WORLD!

yea, a housing degree ….yea…

Could you imagine how fast those Techie mouths would be running if UGA counted managers ans trainers as “student-athletes” for its graduation tally? They would never shut about it.

AtlantaNative62

December 17th, 2010
6:12 pm

65Dawg, you are dead wrong about the Mgt degree not having to take calculus, chemistry, etc. There is a separate “math” track for mgt degree but chemistry, biology, etc are engineering courses and there is no management “substitute. I know this because I got the degree and I busted my butt to get it. But here is the difference between Tech and UGAly: I took the college placement exam and got 15 hours of math credit before ever setting foot on the UGAly campus. I then took advanced maths at UGAly (yes, I went there for a year). Guess how many of those 30 Math credits transfered to Tech? ZERO! So even advanced first year math’s at UGA did not measure up to basic “mgt” calculus at Tech. I also walked on and played at Tech. I saw how hard the trainers worked and again, they deserve to be recognized for the serious time they put in. Any fan – Tech or otherwise – is an ignorant fool if they don’t think managers/trainers should be considered student-athletes.

What are you idiots trying to prove? We get it. You’ve got a good school. Did you hear what I said? YOU’VE GOT A GOOD SCHOOL. But here is what you complete and utter nimrods have never been able to get through your thick skulls: WE DON’T CARE. This is a SPORTS blog on the SPORTS page about Georgia Tech SPORTS. Everyone comes here to talk about SPORTS except you. Why do you morons insist on turning every SPORTS discussion in to a debate on entrance requirements and degree programs? Dawgfan, first off QUIT WHINIING!!! Good god son you are one of the first ones on the tech blogs and 90 percent of the crap you type isn’t really about sports! Its the same old uga insults in a bottle. You have nothing of insight about sports to say, and you sure as crap don’t have anything insightful about tech sports to say. So why don’t you post the football score and move on? Better yet go to the uga blog and b!tch about your team that isn’t in any better shape that tech’s. Either way QUIT WHINING!
