Kammeon Holsey said he doesn’t feel lost, which is how coach Paul Hewitt described his efforts on defense in the win against Savannah State, but he says he is getting the hang of college basketball.
Holsey, a 6-8 forward on Georgia Tech’s basketball team, is averaging 2.9 points and 2.9 rebounds in 14.8 minutes per game. He had a rough game in the 69-59 win against the Tigers, missing two shots, turning over the ball twice and failing to pull a rebound in eight minutes.
In his postgame press conference, Hewitt twice described Holsey as lost, saying, “We’ve got to get Kammeon going.”
Holsey admits to being lost on defense when the season started, but said he’s now starting to understand the nuances of man-to-man, particularly communication and jumping out on his man. He said fellow big men Daniel Miller and Nate Hicks have helped him keep his confidence up.
Hewitt said that the confusion Holsey may be experiencing on defense may be affecting his offense. He has shown flashes this season. In the loss to Georgia, Holsey took the ball at the free-throw line and blew by his defender. However, he missed the shot.
Hewitt said he wants to see Holsey, as well as Miller and Hicks, establish themselves earlier in the games by posting up closer to the basket, blocking shots and grabbing rebounds.
He has said that as the big men play better, the team will continue to improve.
—
Sophomore Glen Rice Jr. played just 10 minutes against Savannah State and went scoreless. Maurice Miller started in his place because Hewitt said that Miller has been playing well this season. He had nine points, five rebounds and three steals in 25 minutes against Savannah State.

Hosley says “he’s now starting to understand the nuances of man-to-man.” How hard is it to understand man-to-man defense, you have a guy to cover and you cover him. Glenn Rice is one of the only players on the team who plays defense and actually displays effort from tip off till the buzzer. The reason we suck and Hewitt sucks is because his players don’t know how to play man-to-man defense and we don’t play our best players. SUCK IT UP DRAD AND FIRE HEWITT.

I admit that I am not an expert on the talent strenghts at all positions on this team. However, I thought I understood the strength of this team to be by far in the backcourt. It would seem that Shumpert and Oliver, et all
are the keys to a good season. Obviously the “big men” need to play better but the front court will not be the
key to success. Hewitt needs to focus more on getting the most out of the back court players who can do the most for GT.

The Yellow Jackets are shooting 40.1 percent from the field, a mark that ranks 293rd in the country. That is not Hewitt’s fault. I am not a Hewitt defender but just sayin that makes it tough on a coach.
What was up with Rice? He did not come in until somewhat late in the game and then did not seem to be hustling.

Too funny 2011. I agree. Exactly what is the nuance of covering a man one on one? That’s like saying he’s got to learn the nuance of dunking. Hey, you go up and flush it. Or learning the nuance of making a three point shot. You stand behind the three point line. But, come to think of it, these are probably complicated issues for Hewitt!!

Those numbers(2.9 points and rebounds) would not be impressive even if they came against upper tier teams, much less the creampuffs of an early season schedule. Unless Hewitt can figure out how to run some semblance of an offense, what little talent we have on hand will continue to be wasted.

I’m less concerned about Holsey and more concerned about perimeter defense. Once again a team shoots 50% or higher from 3 point range against us. A team that shoots 33% for the season. Meanwhile we make 23% of our shots. Against a 1-6 team. Things may get pretty bad in ACC play.

The yellow jackets are currently 6 and 3 (5 and 1 against early season “cream puffs” and 0 and 3 against big time teams). They have 22 games remaining (6 against the cream puffs and 16 against the ACC) The roster of 15 players has 11 guards, 2 centers, and 2 forwards and after 10 games, at least 2 months of practice this year, and a red shirt season Kammeon Holsey still doesn’t understand basic defense according to the coach. Of all the things written on these blogs over the past couple of years that is the strongest criticism and best evidence that Hewitt is just to up to coaching in the ACC. To say that a player in his second year on campus and after 10 games played is “lost on defense” is a self proclaimed admission of incompetence as either a coach or a recruiter or both. Hewitt’s one strength (other than the “contract”) has been his ability to recruit good players (unfortunately too many one and done players) but even his recruiting must now be questioned given this teams imbalance in position players and its inexperience. I believe that any Tech win in the ACC with this roster will be an upset and cannot see any result other than last place in the conference, an early exit from the tournament, and a bleak post season. Hewitts record is what it is, his coaching ability is clearly lacking, and his recruiting efforts have failed to produce a suitable roster. y his own admission his players are “lost”. It is clearly time and past time for him to get lost and give DRad a chance to hire a coach who can rebuild a quality ACC team. Hewitt should have taken an honorable exit last spring and gone to St. Johns. Having not done that he should take the honorable route now and resign. Lacking that DRad should start a campaign to buy Hewitt out and fire him.

Dave Braine was a cover your rear end type guy that mailed it in. Gailey and Hewitt are too much alike to be a coincidence. A couple of guys with dolled up resumes that think they are entitled and were allowed to be by Braine. The only reason Hewitt recruits so well is he is in Atlanta, and the ACC. I think of Notre Dame and ‘O’Leary as the opposite of this. Here was a man of substance but no resume. Don’t buy the suit buy the man.

We’ve been beyond patient, considering ONE winning acc record in TEN years:
2000–2001 Georgia Tech 8–8 T–5th NCAA 1st Round
2001–2002 Georgia Tech 7–9 T–5th
2002–2003 Georgia Tech 7–9 5th NIT 3rd Round
2003–2004 Georgia Tech 9–7 T–3rd NCAA Runner-up
2004–2005 Georgia Tech 8–8 T–4th NCAA 2nd Round
2005–2006 Georgia Tech 4–12 T–10th
2006–2007 Georgia Tech 8–8 T–6th NCAA 1st Round
2007–2008 Georgia Tech 7–9 T–7th
2008–2009 Georgia Tech 2–14 12th
2009–2010 Georgia Tech 7–9 7th NCAA 2nd Round
When we have a lottery pick playing on the blocks we hear, ‘we’re young’…yet…have you seen Kentucky lately?…coaching.
When we have Anthony Morrow, he comes out of high school a 4 star stud…does almost nothing for four years at GT…then breaks records in the NBA within two years…coaching.
We have the most experienced and highly recruited back court that we’ve had in years, so what does that get us with Hewitt’s coaching?
FIELD GOAL PCT = 294th OVERALL
We play against teams who shoot 33% from 3’s for the season, but who then will shoot 50% against us and our good perimeter guys….coaching.
The list goes on and on.
It would take a man of honor to resign and walk away from the money, but it would be the right thing to do. Hewitt knows he is running the program into the ground. He knows we honored him with a gentleman’s contract, which was based on trust and mutual honor. Hewitt needed to resign years ago if he held any respect for the program. Obviously he hasn’t a shred of respect for the program, or he would have let someone else take over, like Bobby Cremins did.

Oh my…
I just did a little digging to find out a little more about Savannah State. This team, who we managed to not blow out, but managed to “hang on” for a ten point victory has the following stats:
POINTS PER GAME = 342nd
REBOUNDS PER GAME = 287th
ASSISTS PER GAME = 324th
FIELD GOAL PCT = 304th
I wanted to see how good their players are ranked coming out of high school, but the team isn’t even listed on scout.com….not even listed!
Their overall record is (1-10, 0-8 away).
We beat THIS team by 10 points….this should be a blowout game based just on our talent, with no coaching involved…
Our talent, just to name a few:
Iman Shumpert – 5 star guy from 2008
Mfon Udofia – 4 star guy from 2009
Kammeon Holsey – 4 star guy from 2009
Brian Oliver – 3 star guy from 2009
Glen Rice – 3 star guy from 2009
Jason Morris – 4 star guy from 2010
This level of talent is comparable to any big school in the country, however, shy of the Tar Heels of the world. Savannah State….by ten points…really? If we can’t blow them out…who can we blow out?

When Paul Hewitt was hired he promised if nothing else an agressive defense that would pressure opposing teams up and down the floor. He promised we would manage this style by keeping fresh legs in the games with frequent substitutions and by recruiting guys who wanted to play defense. What have we seen over the past ten years? Nothing of the sort. I am on strike until we get a real coach. DRAD, what happens when no one cares about GT sports anymore? Not far off.

Good point Yellow. We saw tough D (but street ball Offense) for a year or two, but we now make 33% 3 point shooting teams look great by allowing them to shoot over 50%. I wonder what percentage of games we make a team shoot under their season average? That would be interesting.

so Holsey is lost. I got a better one for you Mr. Hewitt (I will not call him coach) is lost and has been lost for at least 5 years. We now know for sure Will Bynam, and Jarrad Jack carried us to the final 4 not the “lost” Mr. Hewitt. If Mr. hewitt loved GT like Bobby did he would except a smaller buyout and resign and let us try to strat repairing our basketball program. He has completely destroyed everything Cremmins had built here, and although Bobb’y last 3 or 4 years were tough he had the character and love of GT to resign by putting the school first instead of himself. Hewitt had a chance last year to go out graciously and accept another job when he knew most here wanted him gone, but no, it is all about Mr. Hewitt and the money. Well Mr. Hewitt, the day is coming and you will rank up there with coaches like Bill effing Lewis as the worst coaches ever to grace the flats. I hope you choke on all that money you do not deserve. Your agenda has ruined our basketball team, and it appears you have no dignity or class at all or you would resign so we can move forward and rebuild this program. To be fair to Hewitt, Holsey tore his ACL in August 2009 and was out for a while.

It’s truly laughable at this point. Hewitt is a talent killer. And he doesn’t even recruit well anymore. There’s no one whose talent is remotely close to Favors or Lawal is on the horizon for several years. I used to respect him as a man since many said he’s got a lot of class and never has done anything to embarrass the program outside of the court. But the last straw is not taking St. John’s job. It’s supposed to be his dream to coach in MSG and they’re offering $10 mil contract. That’s even more than his buyout. What this tells me is that he knows he can’t get fired right now. All he has to do is staying 2 or 3 more years and he gets that much money even if he gets let go. He works less and still come out with more money. He knows he’s been getting criticized a lot lately and fans want him to have a better result or leave. Sadly, it’s a lost cause now. I want this team to do well every year. Unfortunately, it probably won’t happen soon. I’ll still cheer for this team and even Hewitt hoping someday a new leader comes in and make this program repectable once again.

Maurice Miller should stay the point. This is a no brainer. It appears that Coach has thes theory that the point has to a 6-5″ or taller.. Not true. (allah Ty Lawson) If the smaller points are breaking us down off the dribble, we will get beat on D many times and we will be giving up easy hoops. Leave MM at the point and watch the offense improve. That was the key to the ACC tourneyment run last year. Go Jackets.

Jack – You’re right about that. It’s been another GroundHogDay frustration of mine. 6-4 guys look great getting off the bus (and into the NBA), but if they can’t keep a smaller quicker guard in front of them then it’s stupid to play them at the point. A PG’s main job *IS* to beat you off the dribble, thus your defense has to come help, thus someone ends up wide open, thus the PG dishes for the assist, thus the other team gets an easy shot, thus teams who shoot 33% for the season shoot 50% against us. It’s not rocket science…we all see it…but Hewitt is either too dumb to understand this (unlikely) or too stubborn to adjust to win. I honestly don’t get it…it’s SOO freaking obvious and it kills us year after year…why no adjustment has been made I’ll never know…but one thing is certain………it’s still GroundHogDay with Hewitt.

Those in the Hewitt bunker here at the end of his Tech career will continue to defend him until we are rid of him. They will not see the mediocre record on the court nor the inadequate academic record off the court. They will not hold him morally, legally, or ethically accountable for his driving the Tech basketball program into the ground. And that is OK. When the next coach, whose only agenda is hopefully restoring the integrity, quality, and competitiveness of the players and the program, takes over they will find plenty wrong with him…and that is OK, too. Eventually they will go away, because at this point, they are not Tech fans…they are only Hewitt fans. And they won’t be missed.

We know how one and done’s work out…..they don’t end up going far in the tourney and end up with a losing ACC record…then become lottery picks. SO, the common thread here is 1-and-dones or 3-4-year-guys all are highly recruited and successfully in High School….stink up the place while at GT…and become world beaters in the NBA…….I wonder why they are so unsuccessful at GT……….could it be the coach? Actually, what else could Drad say at this point. However, the best way to force them to make the change after this season as opposed to next is just don’t show up for the games or show up with bags on your head. Personally I do not favor not going even though I did give up my tickets 2 years ago, but would still go to 6 to 8 games per year as the young men do deserve our support. However, I always went because I loved the atmosphere at Alexander and enjoyed ACC basketball. Now there is no atmosphere, as it has been destroyed…there is no thrillerdome. Also we have had one 9 and 7 conference record in what 10 years? We are not competitive, and I am not a fool, tickets are not getting cheaper, and I try to teach my kids to get something in return for their dollar. Now that is a tough sell for Drad, and will be until Hewitt is gone. Hewitt has lost more than half of the fan base, and it would certainly take more than 1 or 2 above average years to get them back something I am very confident that hewitt cannot do. He might be a nice man even with his agenda, but bottom line is he is just not a very good coach, at least not at this level. If he were a man of class and dignity he would take a lesser buyout and resign, but I think we all know that that is not going to happen. He is only in love and grateful to himself, not GT and the opportunity (10years worth) that given to him here. As each day passes my perception of Hewitt drops more and more as a person and a leader. He was given a great opportunity and more than enough chances, yet he continues to hold GT and Drad hostage with his buddy’s Braineless’s contract.
