A Tech football player who is also an Air Force cadet
Chandler Anderson has an interesting dilemma.
Not only is he Tech’s punter, he’s also one of 120 cadets in Detachment 165, the school’s Air Force ROTC program. The Yellow Jackets will play the Falcons in the Independence Bowl.
Are his loyalties divided between his educator and future employer?
He said the detachment’s commander, Lt. Col. Shawn Bevans, tested his loyalties earlier this week.
“I said ‘Sir, I’ll always root for the Air Force,’ ” Anderson said. “… but I’ll be for Tech.”
Anderson will graduate next December and should be commissioned a few days later. His commitment after graduation will depend upon his specialty code. He said it’s possible he could be an officer should Tech play in a bowl in 2011.
Anderson has taken the requisite tests to be a pilot. If he doesn’t receive that assignment, he hopes to land a job in air and space management.
His brother, Cody, is in the Air Force ROTC program at Valdosta State. Anderson said Cody talked him into joining the service. Their grandfather is also a retired Air Force officer.
Bevans said some members of the detachment are considering driving to Shreveport for the game to root on Anderson, Tech and Air Force. Of course, he said they will sit behind the goalposts, so that they will be between both sides.
Either way, he said he can’t lose.
“If Georgia Tech wins, I’m a faculty member and I have to celebrate,” he said. “If Air Force wins, I’m a grad and I can celebrate too.”

Wrecks: I know several alums that are going. They are taking an RV and turning it into a rolling party. There are some casinos close by and some are staying there.

We went to the Orange Bowl last year and had a great time but we’re going to skip the Independence Bowl this year. We’ve been to just about every Tech bowl game in Florida since 1980. I have several fellow alums and friends in the Dallas area that are going this year; it’s a short drive for them and it’s inexpensive to stay in Shreveport.

I went to both schools, my undergrad at USAFA and Masters at Tech after my tours in the AF. Both schools are ranked in the top 5 Aerospace schools in the world and both schools focus on engineering. The academic rigor at Tech is probably harder although the military rigor at the Academies speak for themselves. I don’t really care which team wins, pretty much like Chandler Anderson. I think the service academies deserve more recognition but I’m a Jacket. I’m not rooting for or against either team and will be happy regardless of which team wins.

Thank you both, Wrecks and Thanks JB. I’m looking forward to being there and meeting my former Air Officer Commanding (AOC) at USAFA. Does anyone know which hotel is the best to stay in? Some fellow alums here at NASA are staying at the Hilton and others are recommending the Homewood Suites.

Go to Tech, where maybe Robert Hall could tech you how to beat a woman. You can step over dead bodies on your way to class, likely be tied up and robbed in your own home, and you will have all the crack you need within 2 blocks of “campus”. You can be TE in the Mighty Triple Option that does not believe in the forward pass. You will play in front of about 30,000 people in a 55,000 seat “stadium”. We will play PWERHOUSE teams every year like Maryland, Boston College, Wake Forrest, Duke, North Carolina State and Virginia.
Tech is for you!!!!!
