Don’t blame loss on Blair, coaches and teammates say

Scott Blair shouldn’t be blamed for Georgia Tech’s 42-34 loss to Georgia on Saturday, according to coach Paul Johnson.

Though Blair missed a point-after attempt that would have tied the game at 35 with 4:57 remaining in the game, Johnson said, “don’t put that on that kid.

“Scott Blair has won a lot of games for us.”

The miss, which sailed to the left, snapped the senior’s streak of 77 consecutive point-after attempts made and gave the Bulldogs a one-point lead with minutes remaining.

After the miss, Johnson said that he told Blair he was going to get a chance to win it with a field goal.

He didn’t get the opportunity.

Blair’s teammates said they don’t put the loss on Blair’s right foot.

“Scott’s been a dependable kicker for us,” B-back Anthony Allen said.

Blair was having an all-ACC type season this year. In addition to his PAT streak, he has made 15-of-17 field-goal attempts this season, including eight longer than 40 yards.

“He’s someone who is very to root for,” center Sean Bedford said. “When he’s having that is going well as this year has, you just want to see it continue to succeed. I think everybody felt that way.”

no reason whatsoever to blame Blair. THUGa would have still had plenty of time to score again, WITHOUT us just letting them to save time on the clock. The blame, if you want to call it that, must go to the two fumbles in red zone which took away 14 points.

BLAME AL GROH AND THE STUPID 3-4 DEFENSE THAT GETS SHREDDED EVERY GAME!!!!!!

The PROBLEM is Al Groh is too old and stubborn to change…..And Paul Johnson is too old and stubborn to fire him.

It’s hard to have a winning season when you have to score 45 pts EVERY GAME just to have a chance to win. So get used to gut-wrenching losses by a defense that always seems to give up the big play multiple times a game BECAUSE they’re trying to be in the right place at the right time in some convoluted defense instead of just playing a standard 4-3 like they’ve played since they were 6 yrs old.

The DEFENSE is problem #1….

The SPECIAL TEAMS play is problem #2…..

The UNFORCED TURNOVERS are problem #3…..

It’s not Blair’s fault……But there are some Asst. Coaches that should be REPLACED simply because the same problems at the beginning of the year are STILL the same problems at the end of the year.

See if Paul Johnson holds any coaches accountable and you’ll see whether or not this program moves forward or stays stuck in neutral…..Both of these programs played a pathetic excuse for a football game tonight. [PUKE......PUKE]

It’s you mutt fans who always make excuses or whine or try to find ways to negate a win (vis a vis the two games Tech won during WWII). Nobody else in the entire country disputes those wins, or the wins by any other school in the country using military athletes. THUGa stands alone in trying to claim that those two games don’t count. That kind of behavior has gone on ever since whenever the mutts lose a game. You always try to find a reason not to count it.

We got our first sack in the past THREE games tonight. The D players are constantly out of position and appear “confused” about who is doing what and covering who and then — BAM — big play, score 6! A 10-15 yd dump over the middle becomes a 70 yd TD…..A run to the outside that should be a 5 yd gain at most becomes a breakaway TD run…..And I for one am just tired of it.

At some point you have to take a reality pill and just see it for what it is….The Groh system didn’t work this year. Why do we have to wait another 2 or 3 years to see IF it works with “his” players? Grantham’s 3-4 experiment is just a horrendous as ours! It’s WHY both of these teams are 6-6 and nothing to be proud of.

There is such a difference between watching the 08 game between the hedges when offensive players on both sides were making absolutely incredible plays when they needed to and it was a shootout to see who was left standing at the end. This game was like watching high school teams who don’t know how to protect the ball on offense, can’t do much right on special teams and feel like they got a moral victory by holding the opponent to less than 50 pts!

Am I the only one wearing White & Old Gold who knows Bostic is going to go straight up the middle on every return? I almost threw my remote at our plasma whenever he caught the ball and started straight up the middle EVERY TIME, even running into his own player’s back once because he seemingly has no idea he can also run towards the sideline. Absolutely PATHETIC COACHING.

And their inability to get angry and demand changes means there won’t be much difference in their disappointing season this year and their disappointing season next year. OK, its time to write a little book, based on everything i’ve seen on all of the ajc blogs over the past few weeks, just to cover some things I need to point out…
First, and foremost, congratulations to the Georgia Bulldogs on their victory tonight. It was a hard fought game, and they now also have the opportunity to go to a bowl game, plus gain the extra practices inbetween now and bowl time to assist them going into next year.
Secondly, to all of the bloggers who have been calling for a coaches head/dismissal…..shut up. Seriously. For Grantham and Al Groh, they are both first year coordinators at their respective schools who implemented a completely new defensive scheme, using players they had no input in recruiting and who were not recruited for the 3-4 scheme. They did the best with what they had. Calling it, thier respective hirings, a mistake is simple stupidity. For heavens sake, give them some time. Both defenses will be MUCH improved next year, and even more in 2012. If thats not the case, then start calling for thier heads. For those calling for CMR’s head….wow. Look what the man has done with your program the last, what is it now, 9 years? How many 10 win seasons? How many SEC championships? How many BCS bowls? He has earned the right to fix his teams faults, atleast another year, maybe two. But guess what….even after a 6-6 season, he is on the top of the lists at Colorado and Miami…and I wouldnt blame him for leaving because his fanbase has such SHORT memories and wants his head. Please keep in mind I am a DIEHARD tech fan, and the man is 9-1 against my team. Now, for those who wish CPJ was never hired, diss his offense, and every other negative thing that has been said….know what, go root for someone else. Bandwagon morons. His “high school” offense, that for 3 years now everyone was going to figure out and stop, leads the nation in rushing. It continues to work. It continues to get better. It put up 400 yards of rushing against UGA tonight, who was supposed to “completely” dominate our offensive line. Its the #1 rushing offense regardless of the fact that we have been without our starting QB for 3 games now, and has used 6 or 7 different O line combinations this year due to injuries. Wanna make fun of the passing game? Go ahead…first look at how many drops our recievers have had this year. People are on the blogs bashing CPJ saying he blames the players for everything and takes no responsibilty for anything…when he DEFENDED his kicker and has done so for his players all year, saying more than once there were obvious coaching errors that needed to be corrected. Any coach is going to talk about mental errors and fumbles and lack of intensity and drive, and he has every right to do so this year….because Techs worst enemy this year has been themselves, over and over and over again. Tonight was no different.

For everyone, from Bradley to bloggers, who keep belittling GT’s recruiting, who say there is such a talent gap, who says that CPJ won only with Gailey’s players and cannot recruit quality players to get us back to and keep us at championship levels, who complain that our classes are ranked so low….lets settle some facts. ESPN, Rivals, Scout.com, all use a score to determine a players value, if not the 2-3-4-5 star system. The final class ranking are mostly made up based on how many of the top 150 players a particular team signs, how many 4 and 5 star players a team gets.Go look at ESPN, and Rivals for that matter, and look at Georgia’s past 2 years classes, and the class they are putting together for this year(5 ESPN 150 commits), the majority scored at or above 75. Then go look at Techs. Two 4 star players, 12 players scored at 75 or higher. Last year, it was three 4 star players, 15 players scored at 75 or above. 2009, it was 19 players scored at 75 or higher. (Georgia, btw, had 19 players above 75 in 09, 15 for 2010, and 15 for this upcoming class). SO, not that big of a difference, except for the few players ranked in the top 150 that gives UGA such highly rated classes. Now, UGA fans, please dont think I am trying to belittle your recruiting, I’m not, I am complimenting it highly. I am simply stating the fact that Tech is not recruiting one or two star players like I have read so often, CPJ’s recruiting is EXCELLENT and he will continue to do so. His teams will get better and continue to be competitive. All of the recruits for both sides at the game tonight had to have been impressed with both teams, especially at the opportunties to contribute immediately to both teams.

not a good game but it was a contest between two teams which are not very good…..winning is always better than losing, though…..a serious question…do GT fans still think CPJ will dominate the series in the future like they did after 2008? As a UGA fan, these two teams were the worst we’ve had since CMR was here (next year will probably be another mediocre team) but UGA still beats GT…..Does losing to UGA become a mental think like it does with UGA and Florida?

OK Simple Techster, let’s have a look-see at what the GT OFFENSE did accomplish tonight (which I believe says quite a bit about Grantham’s failure of a defense):

… Tech’s 32 first downs were its most in a game since Nov. 9, 2000 vs. Virginia (34)
… Tech’s 26 first downs via rushing were its most in at least 30 years
… Tech’s 512 yards of total offense were its most vs. Georgia since 1999
… Tech’s 92 offensive plays were its most since Nov. 9, 2000 vs. Virginia (94)
… Tech rushed for 400-plus yards in a game for the eighth time under Paul Johnson
… Tech’s 77 rushing attempts were its most in at least 30 years
… Tech’s time of possession (38:14) was a season high

Yet we still failed to score more points than UGA. And the best defense you have to offer for the GT defense is Groh “did the best with what he had”…..LOL. Let’s hope CPJ isn’t as forgiving and “simple” as you and does show Al Groh the exit door. This defense couldn’t stop KANSAS or DUKE for goodness sake, and it’s NOT for a lack of talent.

GT and UGA both have talented players on defense, but neither has the NOSE TACKLE necessary to make the 3-4 work. Without an effective nose tackle, the 3-4 is simply DOOMED. The fact that Al Groh and Grantham BOTH knew this, yet they continuously tried to do something all season that they KNEW was impossible means they are both frauds.

I have no tolerance for frauds, and lately GT has them in spades in the coaching staffs. Start with Paul Hewitt….Mix in some Al Groh….Pick some more asst football coaches (since so many failed this year there are plenty to choose from).

When a coach doesn’t have the personnel — for whatever reason — to implement “his” style of defense, then he has a responsibility to CHANGE the scheme to best utilize the players available. Show me where either Groh or Grantham did that during this season…..You can’t. That’s WHY they’re frauds and they both should be FIRED. Surely you’re not too simple to get that, are you Simple Techster?

Tech has lost 9 of the last 10 to UGA and hasn’t won a bowl game in 5 years. UGA tried to give Tech the game tonight and “Turkey Neck” Johnson could not do anything with it. What a bad league I lead. OK I hate to LET ALL YOU LEGHUMPERS DOWN but this was the last time for a while you guys will win.

Why ?

Tech is finally done with Butler and Edwards, those two alone have been involved in at least 2 busted, out of position, shoulder high tackle attempts per game or blown coverages each game, tonight was no different. King deeked Edwards out of his jock on one TD run and Butler was the one beat on the pass to your TE. 14 points attributed to two tech “defenders”

Now we can replace them with Ayers and Johnson–two highly recruited corners that CPJ convinced to come to Tech although they were heavily recruited by you guys.

Tech has been able to build depth under CPJ.

While everyone talks down CPJ, pointing out that he won with Gaileys players, they fail to understand that his 2nd recruting class is just now playing. Players who have been on the field sparingly or who have been red shirted will be playing in the system they were recruited for next year, some of them were players you guys wanted.

Orwin Smith, Isaiah Johnson, Emory Peoples, and Ayers will join Roddy Jones, Telvin Washington and a slew of young players who are changing the face of Tech Football. Guess what- Washington can pass the ball too. ( yes he showed his experiance tonight on the final possessions but the pass portion of this high school offense will be something to deal with next year (and you can’t stop the run portion of it already).

By the way the 3-4 defense will have better players in it next year—sorry Butler and Edwards but you both combined to lose the Clemson game, Georgia game and several others with your high tackles and lack of aggressiveness.

When a new system in installed it only takes one player to fail in his job, Tech has had 2 failing all year (and I watched every Tech game–I promise one or both gave up big plays in all but one game–plays that DIRECTLY CONTRIBUTED to losses)

I will leave you with this. Tech got beat tonightand Georgia beat them—-who do you think is the closest to putting it together ? I feel good can you mutts say the same ?

6-6 in a rebuilding year–for Tech that is definatley something new

Take it and like it

If Blair makes the extra point, UGA probably would have kicked a field goal at the point where Murray fumbled on 4th down. Richt would have kicked the field goal since he didn’t already have the lead. So the final would have probably been 38-35. We lost this game by turning it over twice deep in UGA territory. We also could have used the call on the second fumble where the UGA player seemed to have a foot out of bounds. UGA has more talent, especially without Nesbitt, so we needed to be +1 or +2 on turnovers but I think ended up even or -1. For a series that is so lopsided, it is amazing how close all of the games are. Only 1 game in the last 7 hasn’t come down to the last couple of minutes. I wasn’t expecting that this year.

Please, turn down the meaningless low-tier bowl game. No one cares and no one will go. Johnson is 1-2 vs UGA. Chan was 1-6. Who’s to say Johnson won’t have the same sorry record vs UGA that Chan had??? And PS: who can we blame then????

Of course Techies won’t ever want to talk about how their brilliant coach and his wonderful offense did absolute jack diddly squat AFTER the missed extra point with plenty of time left on the clock. Johnson is good at what he does: Wracking up massive amounts of running yards and beating Duke and Wake Forest. That’s it. The guy is an overrated hack.

We all know the truth on this one. Tech beat the h#&! out of Georgia last night, but also beat themselves with the fumbles in the red zone. UGA got the W (congratulations), but didn’t beat Tech like a drum (as predicted). Most Jacket fans don’t have their chins down today – our program is moving in the right direction, and everyone who saw that game knows it, whether they’ll admit it or not.

Did anyone see UGA the Nth? He looked like a prize UGA student in class! Your mascot was sleeping during the game! Too much booze?

Tech never gave up! The Georgia defense was gassed! And only the Lord knows what plays Tech ran on their last possession. On the interception, a wide open receiver near the sideline was available to catch and go out of bounds. Why force the ball?

Anthony Allen…what a horse. I hope you savor your time at Tech and the NFL.

Tech, my alma mater, has to have the ugliest uniforms in the NCAA this year. The solid black stripes on the white ones were so prolific that they took away from the ablility to look at the gold helmets. And the extra-wide Vegas pants stripes looked unstreamlined. As soon as I determined Tech was wearing the black stripes on the white, I went to bed. They look like giant-sized saddle oxfords. Then Tech wore pink, when they could’ve left it on the field with the painted ribbons. Notice the team Tech was playing did’nt wear pink. Tech wore watchable uniforms for only two games- Homecoming and Duke, and those uniforms were only about 80% watchable with the black knee socks deterring. If Tech could have had time 4 old gold like in CPJ’s first year, games would have been entertaining to watch on tv. Tech, IF invited to a bowl, should be invited to the Pinstripe Bowl to teach them about the Tech late 80’s-early 90’s concept of “black is out”.

If there is blame for this loss it goes to CPJ. He had an easy field goal in the first that he gave up to try a fourth down conversion that failed. Also when Tech got the ball with 2:45 left and could have drove down to win the game, he called some draw plays instead of sticking with the option attack that was stuffing the ball down the dawgs throat. The team played good enough to win and should have. If CPJ pulls this junk again he needs to be canned.

Tech played well and we just failed to convert opportunities. Future seems bright and I am excited. UGA loses the two best players AJ and Justin Houston this year and Murray is the only other D-1 player of note I saw on the field. Recruits don’t waste your life in Athens. If you have a TV go somewhere you can be seen. Playing noon games your whole career is a joke. I think Vandy and UGA should go ahead and join the ACC to become relavent again. Tech and Tenn were the only teams UGA beat with at least 6 wins. Ouch.

Scott Blair is a class act, thank you for all the years. CPJ and Big Al lost the game for the players. The players played hard, but what can you do with a EGO coach, he doesn’t go for a field goal in the first quarter, then doesn’t go with the hot hand with Allen with only 2 minutes left, and we are still giving Big Al’s defense time!!!!! CPJ needs to take Big Al by the hand and leave Tech’s campus and never come back. We need a coach that isn’t going with a high school offense and a Pro defense. Do us a favor and go to Georgia.

One thing I will remember from the game is the camera panning on a UGA fan with a painted bald head and the dude just starts barking like he is half human. Seriously any Georgia fan had to cringe at that ugliness and mindless rendering of a fan. That was flat-out backwoods redneck material. It is what it is.

As for the game those were two very bad teams on display
Last night. Not much to say that hasn’t been said. Johnson passing on the fieldgoal from 39 yards to open the game and getting stopped on 4th and 2 was as bad as missing the PAT. GT dominated the game but was done in again by it’s own self inflicted wounds. GT actually has beaten only one team with a winning record. UNC. That ain’t saying much.

Congrats to Georgia on the win but Richt is in trouble. That is not a real good team.

Blair can’t be blamed. If he makes the kick, he just ties the game. GT could not stop the pass. Both teams proved that the 3-4 defense is prone to giving up big plays. GT let UGA move right down the field. At worst, UGA runs down the clock and lets one of the best field goal kickers, in the country, win the game. Both defenses were blessed with runners and returners who could not handle the ball. Great Game!! Neither team at 6-6 can brag, and I am a lifelong dawg fan.

Good effort,Techies. Not a huge surprise that you had them fighting for their lives and it took a missed POT for them to win. Now their the gosh-darned Kings of Georgia football. I guess that includes you, Georgia State, and all the high schools, although there were a few high schools that could have really given them a game this year. I hope you are laughing at their high schoolish shenanigans and strutting around. But, they haven’t had much to strut around about, so understandable in a weird sort of way. Note to Tech coaches for next year. Your offense is antiquated and needs some weapons added. Run it, but have some other feasible and executable alternatives. Developing an underneath passing game that you can execute would really be helpful. Also a mid to long range passing strategy would be something to have handy. One you actually practice. The option game is not going to pick up 3rd and longs in a lot of instances where a good underneath passing attack would. And there’s no time to grind it out with a minute thirty left and you’re at you 15 with one or two time outs. Also, it will help your recruiting. Dawgs — you have a great quarterback to build on. Next year, try to stay out of jail and improve your culture. And things might look up.

To all the sour grapes Tech fans, this is why the game is played. You win or lose the game on the field, not by talking on blogs. The object of the game is to score points, not add up the yardage or 4th down conversions. The end result is 42 is more than 34. Should haves, could haves and ifs don’t count and the only thing that counts is the scoreboard when the horn blows.

We need to get a photo of CPJ’s face when UGA picked off the errantly thrown ball to seal the UGA win. That oe would be priceless. Passing and GT is # 1 in the nation rushing??? AHAHAHAHAHA

CPJ’s “strategy” to allow UGA to score, so as to get the ball back, will be laughed about for decades and it may in fact, replace Reggie Balls’ throw out of bounds on 4th down, as # 1 GT dumb move. Wow …………….so hillarious.

I recall Pepper Rodgers going down to his knees with his bloody nose after he yanked the head pones and they went airborne right into his face. WHOP!! Amazing and on national TV that was. They get the better athlete’s, get more top recruits and are deeper at third string than we are on our front line. But I live for the moments each year when they give us the chance to knock them off their delusional pedestal. With the talent level they had on the field last night compared to us, we should not have even been in this game. A backup quarterback, God awfull special teams and defense, Iffy O-line at best and we run for 400+ yare in it with a chance to win right up till the end. Looking forward to next year.

Scott is the last person on the blame list. Should have gone for 3 in the opening drive instead of going for it on fourth. This loss comes down to bad defense and fumbles. UGA took advantage of GTs fumbles and GT did not. UGA got help from a ref getting in the way for thier only long run. UGA got to keep a fumble recovery that should have been overturned due to the players foot being out of bounds. Fact is UGA got the breaks it needed to win the game and though they are saying it they in no way stopped the “high school offense”.

old Jacket

November 28th, 2010
12:24 pm

Observations of an old Jacket:
1. With many teams using wide receivers that are at least 6-5 tall Tech’s DBs who are short but slow will continue to be exploited.
2. Without a beast at nose tackle with at least 2 beasts for back ups the 3-4 defense is a lost cause. Either change the scheme or change the coordinator.
3. Until CPJ hires an O-line coach who can teach something that passes for pass blocking it will not matter who the QB is or who the wide receivers are. Throw while running for your life is a waste of
4. Wide receivers who are afraid to run crossing routes should not be on the team.
5. No team wins consistantly on Division 1 football without a tight end as a safety valve.
6. With all of the teams throwing the ball around the field these days you must be able to employ a pass rush. Where is Tech’s pass rush?
7. And finally, with CPJ building a roster that includes “smaller, quicker” linemen and no tight end, how many more years will it take to rebuild again when he decides to retire OR move on to another challenge?

I’m just saying………

"Mugshot Grantham"

My boss, the let em score thing shows just how BAD the coaching is at UGA. Take a few knees and the game is over. Johnson let em score to get the ball back with 1-1/2 min left. It was actually SMART coaching and be sure to let me know when you Dawg fans can recognize good coaching, OK? I mean you see so little of it in the span of a full season watching Richt and his merry band of cowboys.

Perhaps the UGA coaching highlight of the year was “Mugshot Grantham” and his infamous choke hold on himself?!? What could be more appropriate than find a guy who has been a failure everywhere he’s coached, pay him $750k per year and get a defense that results in a team that can’t beat a single team with a record over .500 in TWELVE tries…….Now THAT’S something that’s absolutely worth laughing your arse off about!!!

So what, we lost to Ga, even your mascot was asleep, if I remember correctly, when is the last time you guys have had a winning season, one that really counts, what do ya’ll do, practice all year just for this one game? We come home with a troupy last year, what do ya’ll have?

Here’s how Mugshot Grantham’s defense “stopped” CPJ’s offense last night:

Maybe you should give him a raise and just make him a $1 Million Man….And tack on a few years to his contract since you’re so in love with him. Real classy and he fits right in at thUGA with the school that leads the nation once again in arrests per player:

thUGA’s signature victory every year now is GT……I LOVE IT!!! LOL

IMO, Johnson out coached UGA the entire game, but ironically did not coach his team at all when the Jackets needed it the most (last 4 minutes of game). To see this happen frustrates me more than ever.

IMO, Groh coached up his defense when they needed it the most and gave GT the chance to win with a field goal trailing by 1 point. This is a sign of a great coach!

IMO, these two coaches need to have a heart to heart and get on the same page.

IMO, special teams coach is gone! Hire Richt. HAHA.

GO JACKETS, THWG!

How bout them BEES!!!

I would just like to know how much Paul Johnson got paid to make the dumb offensive play calling when Tech had the ball with 4:00 left? Anthony Allen was killing the UGA defense all night, & they keep the ball in Washington’s hands & lose yards on all 4 downs! Allen was your horse; you should’ve rode him to give Blair a chance for redemption.

It is sad to say but I think the truth is that we just have to admit that Tech is not going to beat UGA very often (like 1 time in 10 years). Even when we have a superior team, as we did last year, our teams do not have the mental confidence to win and UGA expects to win.

@BZZWOMAN: You are a moron. If you can’t even make an accurate post, please don’t even try. When is the last time UGA had a winning season?
