Green has Tech’s attention

Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green has the attention of Georgia Tech’s coaches and players.

Paul Johnson said that Green is “the best wide receiver in the country. Best I’ve seen on tape. It’s not even close.”

Secondary coach Charles Kelly, whose players will be matched up with Green in Saturday’s game, said, “He does everything great. He’s big (6-4, 212 pounds) . He’s strong. He’s quick. He’s physical. He can jump and play the ball in the air.”

Green has 41 catches for 674 yards and nine touchdowns this season in just seven games. His story is well-known. He was suspended for the first four games of the season after he sold his jersey from the Independence Bowl to an agent’s rep.

When he returned, the Bulldogs’ offense took off, scoring at least 30 points in its last six games. It topped 30 once in the first five games. In less than three seasons, he has 2,445 yards, third on the school’s career list.

“Addition of A.J. Green has made it better for everybody,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “Better for receivers opposite him, the run game has improved. He’s a difference-maker. It’s not all A.J. but he can make your offense go.”

While Tech has had issues stopping passing attacks this season (allowing 203.4 yards per game), it has had success with minimizing individual receivers. Just one, Miami’s Leonard Hankerson, has had more than 100 yards in a game against them this season. Tech likes to give receivers a fairly big cushion at the line of scrimmage so that they make sure that they can’t get behind them for big gains. The Jackets have allowed 31 pass plays of at least 20 yards this season

Kelly said some of the issues stopping the big pass plays are the result of missed tackles. He and cornerback Dominique Reese said they can’t allow that to happen against Green. They said they can’t allow him to change the game.

“He’s going to get his,” Reese said. “You try to limit the big plays.”

We couldn’t stop them last year without Green. They are going to rip our D to shreds this year. They don’t even need him– just gash us right up the middle with their mediocre running game. Why can Paul Johnson not get things together on defense? We had one of the best defenses in the country under Tenuta, and that was with an offense that could barely move the ball.

Tenuta’s D was feast or famine. Great when the blitz worked but horrible when it did not. Do not get me wrong, this defense is atrocious. No excuses there. The year after an ACC championship though, we have to have more patience. Even UGA fans are showing more patience with Richt after 2 down seasons than some of the GT fans right now. Give Groh some time to get the right players in the 3-4. It will improve.

Thanks GoldBlur for a little sanity. Tenuta’s Ds were awful, especially against a decent QB, remember what Matt Ryan did to that D, wasn’t pretty. D problems are not schematic, we’ve got talent issues on that side of the ball, but that’s not new, young players, players recruited by Wommack, and under Gailey when the writing was on the wall. I’m not out to defend Groh, he may not can get it done either, but let’s have some sanity and perspective first. Give it time McFans and a Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Total defense rankings under Tenuta:

2002: 50th
2003: 20th
2004: 12th
2005: 22nd
2006: 27th
2007: 20th

Yeah, top 30 5 out of 6 seasons is truly awful. Thank God we don’t have to live with that anymore.

It amazes me how quick GT fans were to throw Tenuta under the bus as soon as he was out the door. Sure his defenses had a few bad games, but what defense doesn’t struggle against Matt Ryan at QB, particularly when its offense is doing nothing to stem the tide?

What amazes me the most about those yearly rankings of tenuta’s defense is his first year, were they were ranked 50th. And look, he was close to having a top 25 defense every year after that. People want to bash groh when the man hasnt even been at tech for hardly 9 months. Give him some time to get the right players in here. We always complain about a lack of talent on D, well then stop throwing groh under the bus!! Not his fault he is playing with Gailey’s left-overs and a hybrid gailey/johnson class from 2008. And its not that Johnson cannot recruit. All of these fair-weather fans know nothing about GT football and about Johnson. Johnson’s true recruiting classes (2009, 2010) are much better than Gailey’s sorry classes, excluding the 2007 class. This recruiting year is still not over, yet. And half of the studs that were from last years class are redshirted. Just give them time. Johnson has won EVERYWHERE he has been. National championships with GSU. Ten win seasons playing against BCS teams with NAVY! Johnson’s offense will be fine. So will Groh’s defense.

AMG,

Keep in mind also that Groh was not the D coordinator of Virginia during all of those years. They were running his 3-4, but most of his focus was on his HC job. Now with all of his attention on the defense, I think we could have a better defense than Virginia in the future once we get some 3-4 type players in our system. The 3-4 relies soley on a dominant NT and play-making OLBs. We DO NOT have a dominant NT. Period. And our OLBs are a guy who has played DE in college for the past 3 years and Sylvester, a 4-3 type linebacker. People just dont understand that if the 3-4 does not have the right type of guys, it will not be effective. Give Groh time. Next year wont even be his best year. It will take atleast 2 years to get guys cycled into our system.

The 3-4 is doing a good job. Lining up in a 4-3 will enable teams like Georgia to just pound the ball at Tech’s smaller defense. The 3-4 povides many more looks for the offense to deal with and adds an element of confusion that the 4-3 just doesn’t have.

—-re tenuta, his defenses saved GT many games especially with the offensive genius chan’s ability as OC to go three and out as often as possible and to score as little as possible……the less said about the chan era the better
—-as for this weeks game, the matchup with green is similar to the miami matchup….young qb and hankerson for miami, murray and green for uga……the miami game didn’t work out so well for GT……i would venture to say that uga’s offense is more potent than miami……
so, GT will have its hands full…….hopefully, PJ’s offense will do its part and maintain ball control, commit no turnovers, and control the clock and keep the uga offense off the field while scoring at least 4 TD’s…..if the D can force a couple of turnovers and play its best game of the year, then GT has a chance………and remember to give the damn ball to orwin……go jackets….thwg

Johnson has won everywhere he has been, huh? Have you seen our record this year? A LOSING record is a real possibility… in his 3rd year! Even Chan never had a losing record!

Yes PJ won at Navy playing the 119th ranked schedule every year. What is your point? He also beat Army every year. Of course that didn’t translate all that well to beating the worst UGA team in 15 years did it? Of course PJ had “bigger fish to fry” so he can be excused.

I am not convinced that Chan would not have had similar success the last two years. The best recruiting class in GT history will do that for you. We are seeing the fruits now in recruiting of playing with this boring, bush-league offense… CPJ fans celebrating the heralded recruitment of 1-AA and Sunbelt “athletes,” making excuse after excuse for why this year has been a “rebuilding” year, when every last one of them predicted 10+ wins.

Of course few of these CPJ fans will listen to a true GT FAN like myself who saw this mess coming and predicted a 7-5 season the second we lost the four juniors to the draft! The reason I could see it? Because PJ has not recruited the playmakers necessary to replace those players! He can blame Chan all he wants, but the vast majority of this roster was recruited by PJ, and I’m not convinced it isn’t PJ’s fault that the remainder of Gailey’s leftovers has not been coached to its full potential!

You cannot blame Chan for the utter lack of discipline and leadership when PJ has been with this program for THREE FULL SEASONS. We hear soundbyte after soundbyte from PJ about how we need to play “nasty” and “with our hair on fire,” yet three years into his regime, those are the last phrases that come to mind when describing his team!

Wake up GT fans! PJ is slowly turning us into Annapolis South/Statesboro North! It will take this program YEARS to recover from the damage he is doing to our talent level, IF we can recover at all. We will be back in the DARK AGES of the late 70’s by the time CPJ is through with this program!

However, what I remember negativily about our D under Tenuta was the Secondary… we let everything get behind us. This coming game against UGA w/AJ is going to be a real test and a great barometer on how our Secondary plays… Not worried about the DL or LB.

Tenuta’s defenses were decent–unless you were facing a good QB or coach that would just tell his QB to toss passes behind our overmatched, isolated DB’s, or get the ball out as quickly as possible for 10 yards at a time (AKA my boy Matt Ryan).

Also got to remember that the ACC sucked really bad while Chan was here. FSU and Miami were on the way down. UNC and NCState were weak and changing coaches. Wake Forest won the ACC, for Pete’s sake! Tenuta’s numbers and Chan’s record were against a weaker ACC than exists right now (as bad as that is…)

You are an idiot. Johnsons recruits are not “sun-belt recruits”. You are a troll uga fan. Last years class had 5 four star prospects. Gailey consistently brought in at least 8-10 two star recruits every year. And Johnson winning all those years at Navy was relavent. He beat talent equal to his own at Navy. Its not like he beat Army with Alabama’s roster. I dont even know why I am arguing with you. You obviously are delusional. You act like Johnson is bringing in a bunch of 2 star and unranked players. This years class is not as good as last year’s class, but it would be a typical gailey class. Dont act like Gailey was some wizzard of a recruiter and innovator. Anything decent brought in during those years were Giff Smith.

bring back, to suggest that chan would have similar success this year would be correct…..he would have certainly been celebrating the current won/loss record as a success……..the fact that GT fans are disappointed this year represents a seachange in attitude that coach johnson has brought to GT with his winning tradition and ACC championship last year……….to pine over gailey’s absence as you seem to be doing suggests you are not really a GT fan but an imposter or that you were comatose during the chan years….
GT’s offensive rankings are listed below during chan’s tenure…..and remember, he was the OC during games and was often “celebrated” for his offensive genius by his ill-informed supporters.
total offense team rankings:
2002—-57th
2003—-94th
2004—-80th
2005—-78th
2006—-67th
2007—-69th
chan demonstrated stellar incompetence managing the offense during the games…( please watch the replay of GT’s failed 4th down attempt in the ACCCG near the goal line against WF….that’s all you need to see)……chan’s success at GT was almost entirely due to tenuta’s defenses keeping opponents scoring down while chan was busy keeping GT’s scoriing down……i could go on but i’m feeling a bit ill……
my bet is that coach johnson continues the winning ways at GT, this year notwithstanding……with an improved defense next year, and pj’s recruits ( new and old) with another season of experience,
i look forward to next season……we’ll see……….go jackets…..thwg

Bring back chan is an idiot! I’ve said that earlier already but his remarks seems to have no credibility or sense at all. Tech has an obvious down year like many schools in the country, e.g. Texas. We traditionally don’t recruit 5or4 star players each year and that is difficult when 4 players left last year that contributed a lot to the team. It is a rebuilding year for us. And another thing, compare CPJ’s three seasons at tech and compare Gailey’s. My point proven. Go Jackets! THWG!

JACKETfan12

And this is all the people who bash Johnson and say that he cannot recruit and “his recruits” are untalented. Of his 5 true recruits from the starting lineup:

Julian Burnett- 2nd leading tackler on team- true sophomore
Izaan Cross- 2nd leading tackler on d-line- leads d-line in sacks as true sophomore
Owrin Smith- 3rd leading rusher on team- leads a-backs in rushing as true soph
Stephen Hill- As pitiful as it is, he leads the team in recieving yards
Will Jackson- One of our better o-lineman.

Fact is, every one of Johnson’s recruits have made significant impacts this year and have been bright spots among Gailey’s poor recruits, excluding Nesbitt and Jefferson. Allen is a transfer, on Johnson’s behalf. People are just ignorant when it comes to tech football. They throw Johnson and his recruits under the bus when they have no clue about the facts. Stats are facts. They do not lie. Johnson’s recruits and transfer’s on his behalf make up the majority of the production of this team, yet are a quarter of the starting lineup. And all of Johnson’s other recruits make significant contributions as backups as RS Freshmen and true freshmen.
Isaiah Johnson- Tremendous potential, 41 tackles int and a sack as a backup safety.
Brandon Watts- Good potential, been in and out of starting lineup as RS Fresh
Jeremiah Attouchi- Going to be our best linebacker in 1-2 years
BJ Bostic- Great potential at a-back and kick returner.

The list goes on. And still more talent on Johnson’s part that is redshirted.
