Johnson, Tech in “new territory”

Though there’s still a chance that Georgia Tech can make it back to the ACC championship game, coach Paul Johnson thinks the odds are long.

He said if it doesn’t happen it will be a situation that he’s rarely experienced in 14 years as a coach: a year in which a major goal hasn’t been met.

Johnson led the Yellow Jackets to a tie for the ACC’s Coastal Division title in 2008, and they won the conference championship last season.

To get a chance to defend that title, Tech (5-4, 3-3) must win its remaining two ACC games, starting with Saturday’s matchup against Miami, and then hope for an unlikely combination of events from the rest of its division foes. Tech also needs one more win to reach bowl eligibility for the 14th consecutive season.

Because this is a “new territory”, Johnson said he’s doing his best to make sure that his players know there are still goals to meet.

“If you are competitive and you want to play, you are going to play no matter what,” Johnson said. “That is why you are out there if you are a competitor.”

Before coming to Tech in 2008, Johnson experienced a lot of success in previous head-coaching stops at Navy and Georgia Southern:

  • He won or tied for the Southern Conference championship five times when he was at Georgia Southern and won back-to-back national championships.
  • Though Navy is an independent school and therefore can’t win a conference championship, Johnson led the Midshipmen to an 11-1 record in games against Army and Air Force, taking the Commander-in-Chief’s trophy five out of his six years in Annapolis, Md.

“I am not worried about me getting ready to play because I am competitive and I know what it’s about, but I think you have to point out to the guys what you are still playing for,” Johnson said. “You are playing for bowl eligibility, you are playing for a winning season, you are playing for pride.”

Coaching?

This team put their best 60 minute game performance against a pretty good Offense and come up short and its coaching? haha

There is no talent on this team right now, which is the problem.

We have a young team, but i understand coaching wants to be blamed which is crap.

Yeah, its not the coach’s fault that a preseason top 15 team is now 5-4. Let’s blame the players. They are useless bums with no talent. Yeah, that’s the ticket!!!

Who on God’s green earth would want to play for such worthless fans? And Techies wonder why they can’t recruit the big prospects. Its calculus, not their whiny attitudes. Life is so unfair!!

Hey I am a GT grad but I don’t see real success without a capable passing offense, and I don’t see real success there without better recruiting of WRs which wll not happen without even a shotgun package to allow the QB to see the field. WRs can see no future here, and I can’t see a great future without the ability to recruit for and execute a passing game. Plus it’s a boring offense.

Three of the first seven comments were from UGag trailer denizens? ‘Bout right. Hey, point is, there’s still fun stuff to play for. It’s been a strange season, but I’m still all in. The VT game opened a new curtain. dawgfan, if you get off saying negative things about a rival… that’s OK. We’ve come to expect it. And to ignore it. I still love my team. Maybe you should concern yourself with what’s gonna happen with Auburn (oh, yeah. I wouldn’t want to think about that either, if I were you.)

The Coaching is fine. People fail to understand that this is a very young GT team. Yes, they had a Senior QB returning and a few RB’s but in all this team is very young and breaking in a new Defense without the proper personal to run the 3/4. They will be fine in the long run but like alot of others we have to take our lumps this season.

In all it could be worse and we could have a top 5 recruiting class each and every year ala Texas and UGAG and still be under acheiving.

mountain jim – Maybe you are a Tech guy; maybe not. I agree that we need a little better passing game. But I don’t think the basic offense is boring. I call it ‘trampling,’ and it’s fun to trample people. But, when we encounter a huge D-line, or when someone has a month to practice against our (simulated) O, then we need a passing alternative.

UGA REALLY STANDS FOR JOE DIRT

I agree with GT jeff, uga has top 10 class after top 10 class and they went to shreveport last year and will lose 6 or 7 games this year with all that elite talent. GT has no top 10 classes and we were picked to finish behind VT,miami and unc as we are sitting now (even though we beat unc on the road)! So we really are sitting at a place where the experts had us. We have a chance to finish 2nd in our division if we beat miami and duke and unc loses 1 more game. We still have a shot to win 8 regular season games and 9 with a bowl win. 8 or 9 wins for our team after losing the 4 superstars we had and our QB for mostly the last 4 games of the year…would be a victory for us. This is very well within our grasp. Miami and duke at home and we won the last time in athens and uga is not good this year so there is no reason why we can’t win again there.

I would say that uga has been a complete failure in the last 2 seasons but it’s not for a lack of talent. We win with far less talent than uga and went to a BCS game last year with more wins than uga and very likely we will win more games this season. I have never seen a program like uga that does less with so much!! So next time you rednecks want to come on a GT blog and bark about coaching or we suck, just take a look into the mirror at what you mutts have accomplished in 2010? 2 wins vs possibly the worst programs in the nation, beaten nobody that was even preseason top 25, will have a .500 regular season record at best and another crappy bowl if you even get to go bowling. I think auburn will smoke you guys and the GT game will be a game where both teams battle and the better coach will win this game in athens. I will take CPJ any day of the week over CMR and the program that is going down like a virgin on prom night!!! I can’t wait for GT to give you the loss that hurts the worst of any all year. A home loss with a bowl game on the line and watching us trash your hedges again…it’s going to be a GT fans biggest dream come true!!! 7 losses on the way in just a couple weeks and NO BOWL GAME IN 2010!!! BANK ON IT!

1. Beating uga
2. Winning out the rest of season
3. Possibility of division title and then conference champ
4. Great bowl

Okay Techies. You’ve got no talent and CPJ should get coach of the year for pulling 5 wins out of this rag tag group of no talent azzclowns. My retort to all your big tough talk about how UGA underachievs is a simple one. I am thinking that Washington might be the shot in the arm the passing game needed as I believe he is a better passer than Nesbitt.

If he can just hold up the running side of the offense GT might have someone who is not as one dimensional as Nesbitt is.

This will bode well for the UGA game. Expect UGA to employ the same strategy as they did last year – run, run and more run. Especially with a freshman QB.

Indeed there is always something to play for.

Not good, not good at all. Johnson needs to clear his mind of what if and get on with the next game. Miami looks like they’ve found the next great QB, and beating them (even at home) will take a huge effort. My coach (Meyer) isn’t having a great season, so every year winning 10 or more games is not possible for most programs. He needs to build on this year and remember that his own calls at VaTech helped lose the game (going on 4th down with new QB and at mid field). That led to the touchdown that turned the momentum of the game. Play each game as if that is the last one they will play this year, and the outcome may be surprising.

Hershel off the right side, Hershel off the left side, Hershel on the sweep, Buck B rarly threw the ball! Ok Tech is #1 or #2 in the country in Rushing offense. Seems to me they score points. All they need to do is strengthen the defense a little there ya go. Not to mention that when you run the clock runs and the other team stays off the field. I hope that Paul Johnson does leave town because before him The Tech GA game was a lock every year. Now we may just our asses handed to us again. I even heard some of you proclaim we will compete for a national championship. PJ is a middle of the road coach in a BCS conference who got lucky with another guys recruits. He caught everyone of guard with that gimmick offense last year but now it is over. In fact I predict that this team could possibly finish below .500 next year. So STFU with all the lame excuses for why your team is failing. Your coach can’t recruit and the rest of the conference has caught up with the TO.

In fact, the only team to consistently stop the Jackets during a game was Iowa. THUGa THINKS they did, but all they did last year was contain the inside game. Allen and others ran freely on the outside all night long. An ineffective passing game and TERRIBLE defense is what allowed the mutts to win last year, the same two deficiencies that have plagued the Jackets throughout this year. But back to your original claim that the entire conference has figured out the TO. You are obviously the deluded one, if you think that, so YOU STFU !!!

delusion, Tech didn’t CLAIM the 1990 national championship; it was awarded to them by the UPI. There is a crystal football in the Tech trophy room verifying that championship, and that is the SAME CRYSTAL FOOTBALL that is now given to the BCS champion. And as far as a school claiming a national championship after playing in a mediocre bowl, take a look at Michigan State in 1952. They only played 9 games (when most other schools played at least 10), did not appear in any bowl game at all, and yet they were voted number 1 by AP. Is it any wonder that Tech has always and will always dispute that CLAIM for a national championship, when the Jackets went 12-0 with an Orange Bowl win that year.

Win three games and we are 8-4 and win the bowl game and we’ll be ranked about #17 in the country, about where the average of most of the preseason rankings had us. The Kansas game is the one that upsets me the most. I was there and we were out-coached, a rarity. We were due with N.C. State (a better team that day) and Clemson was just waiting on us. If Nesbitt stays in the whole game, Virginia Tech is toast. This is a transitional year with a different cast of players, including many young ones getting their first experience. We lost four starters to the NFL which is history, but it hurt, especially at the beginning of the season. The defense is improving with the new scheme and if we can maintain some quarterback consistency we will be okay. Most everyone is coming back next year and the cupboard will not be bare next year. Things are in good shape at Georgia Tech, the best since 1990 and the late 90’s.

We had pro style that moved on to Buffalo, doesn;t seem to be doing much up there. I hope we can win out but if we cannot, doesn’t change my opinion. We won an ACC title last year, 11 other teams wish they had including VT, FSU, Clemson, Miami and UNC.. I am not gettng the dog fans hatred toward CPJ. Are you saying CPJ needs to go? I can’t believe UGA fans get on here and try to trash Tech when their team will struggle to make it to a bowl game. As far as Paul Johnson and his offense, so far it has been successful. We lead the nation in rushing!!! I’d say that’s pretty good. The passing game has been pathetic due to a combination of poor passing and poor catching, not poor coaching. The defense appears to have made great strides so far this season. Recruiting appears to be solid (I would be happy to hear some fact-based arguements on why our recruiting is bad, but I don’t think they exist), based on all the external measurements (recruiting expert web sites), but then of course you never really know how good your recruiting is until 3 to 5 years later.

Now, would I like to see some variation in CPJ’s offense, absolutely. Do I wish we would run some pistol formations, yes. Would I like to see some spread option to go along with our triple option, sure. Do I think that some of what CPJ does is very complex with complex blocking schemes and angles of attack, yes. I look at Oregon and I see a relatively simple offense that doesn’t require nearly as much complex blocking and perfect angles. I would love to see us combine what we do right now with what ORegon does in a simplified scheme.

Well I am a GT grad, was in school during Pepper Rogers era (such as it was).

I guess ‘boring’ was not the best description, but I have gotten tired of getting killed every bowl game and against the best lines because this offense is what it is and PJ seems too stubborn to see that not having a workable shotgun passing game to go along with the option offense severely restricts passing game success. Without a good passing game, GT will never be top 10 at season end. And to say its because GT will never recruit, well look how many of Gailey’s recruits were drafted high last year? Let’s see PJ recruit some talent that the NFL wants. If he needs to expand his schemes to get the quality of players that Gailey was getting on offense then do it. My brother, another GT grad who was a walk-on at GT, tried to get me to go to Clemson game with him this year, but I told him I had seen enough to know GT was not going to be good this year and I did not need to sit in Death Valley watching them go down the tubes, which they did.

Just calling it as I see it – without more talent PJ will never do as well as he did last year, using Chan’s recruits.

I have considerable faith in Coach Johnson’s ability to navigate this quagmire successfully. Despite his detractors, Gailey did not leave the talent cupboard bare when he left and we’ll soon (next season) see how successful CPJ’s recruiting efforts have been the past several years. I love the optimism of my fellow fans and alumni, but I thought all along that expectations were unrealistically high for this season. Hopefully, we finish 8-4 (or even 7-5 and beat UGA) and reload for next year, when CPJ’s recruits will make up the majority of the starting roster. Groh’s defense needs to make great strides by next fall, and CPJ needs to implement some of those “new wrinkles” we’ve heard so much about.

The players’ and coaches’ goals are most important, but a couple of goals I would like to see achieved as a fan are:
1. BEAT UGA. (Yes, it is that important.)
2. GO TO A BOWL GAME. (That means the team AND the fans, even if it IS Shreveport–gag).
3. WIN the darn bowl game.

To HenryCountyGT: Amen, brother. As a fellow Tech man and HC resident, I echo your sentiments on CPH. Hewitt’s incompetence as a leader and officer of the Institute should have resulted in his firing years ago, regardless of the golden shackles of his contract. He has completely neglected his academic responsibilities in addition to failing as a coach in the ACC. When your coach is singled out as the most overpaid man in his position in the country (Wall Street Journal), you know it’s bad for the Institute, the future of the program, and the fanbase.

There is plenty to play for and hopefully these young kids understand this and realize these games can be used as building blocks for next year and recruiting. I believe Tevin Washington will take full advantage of this oppurtunity and hopefully the TEAM gets behind and helps him. I would love to see him and Smith get a good passing game together and surprise the hell out of some defenses.
Speaking of the passing game anybody else see Chris Jackson moved to WR next year?

T3 – you think it takes 4 years to design and implement a few pass plays with the QB taking the snap in the shotgun, where he can see and read the defense/blitzes before and during the start of the play?

And not fall down while dropping back?

He has not yet recruited anyone so far that can reliably catch a pass, and he appears to be too stubborn to see and apply the value of shotgun-based passing plays on 3rd and 10+. I expected to see that added this year, the fact that he has not indicates to me he has so deluded himself as to believe he can coach a great offense without it. I disagree, and will not sthu.

You guys complaining about Johnson need to realize that he has won everywhere he has been. He is Tech’s version of Tressel because of the career path he followed.

This year was going to be tough for Tech just like us replacing Stafford and Moreno with Cox and Ealey.

Next year is a very key year for Tech and UGA. Richt needs to win a bunch of games and Johnson needs to quiet some critics.

I think the future is very bright for both. Nesbitt getting hurt while it sucked at the time, may be a blessing with Washington getting playing time this year. If Murray had been able to play last year for the final 3+ games, I don’t think we would have been nearly as conservative early on.

Haha I think Paul Johnson and Paul Hewitt can help each other.. PJ can help with coaching and PH can help PJ get better recruits.. With a Senior QB Tech should atleast match or one more loss than last year. Ya’ll should go see the kid I went to highschool with which might be at Tech soon QB coach right now he in the UFL. This kid had a 10 and 2 season every year he played QB we need sumone like him at QB youtube georgia southern Jayson Foster.. he ran a 4.27 40 yard dash and he can read the option better than nesbitt n hit the wholes quicker. I love nesbitt but Jayson better I cant wait to see C Perkins play

Paul Johnson quote:

“I am not worried about me getting ready to play because I am competitive and I know what it’s about, but I think you have to point out to the guys what you are still playing for,” Johnson said. “You are playing for bowl eligibility, you are playing for a winning season, you are playing for pride.”

So what the good ole coach is saying is the tech players need to be told whats going on? I thought tech players were all incredibly intelligent engineers developing rocket science and the like?

mike, a 4.27 40 isn’t going to help a QB in this offense nearly as much as weighing 220 lbs like Nesbitt does. Nesbitt didn’t need to be able to run a 4.27 40 to score against VT, he just needed good blocking. And time and time again, this offense has proven that we need a big physical QB to gain 1-3 tough yards on 3rd and 4th down. Personally, I am happy to root for T. Washington and hopefully CPJ will showcase his throwing ability in the next three games, but I am really looking forward to seeing Vad Lee run this offense in a few years.

Bobby Dodd left in 67. Counting that year and all the years right up to this moment, GT has seen many coaches come and go with the average tenure being 3.5 years. Now, come mid season NEXT YEAR, CPJ will be in very new territory for himself ……………because he will have entirely his players and already in 2010, his middle school offense has been found out. Next season? YES, he will be in new territory ……….being fired and all.

Next year that itty bitty southern conference wishbone offense will be the joke of the nation. Rushing yards??? Ranked # 1? What would you prefer? Rated say 12th at 9-2 or ranked # 1 in rushing( 4-8 ) and not ranked even in the top 4 of the ACC??? Hmmmmmmm?? Rushing stats simply do not matter.

Bill Fulmer, Lewis, Rodgers, Carson, Dodd ( run off by Vince Dooley ) and CPJ, and Bobby Ross and Chan the Man and too many others to name ………….. have been the GT football coach since just 1967 !!!
They come and go every3.5 years and CPJ is close to that dubious mark.

Athens is waiting ………….. we want you to be ready for Aaron and Kris Durden ( he is our TOP receiver ) and AJ ( did not play GT in 09 ) and Orson Charles and Tavarres King and Israel Troupe and yes, Marvelous Marlon Brown, not to mention our stable of NFL bound tight ends. Ealey and Caleb King y’all already are well acquainted with. Right???

Shhhhhhh! Aaron Murray will sprint to the corner and then, stop and hum it 45 yds for a quick TD!!! Y’all will think that he is gonna run it …………or is he? Al Groh will look far older than his already OLD 68+ face after Bob befuddles the old man.

“No talent?” Amazing that we hear that description after a loss but not after a win. A good coaching staff makes adjustments to accommodate the team’s available talent. I haven’t seen that happen on The Flats this year. You don’t have to scrap the system, but you’ve sure got to tweak it really good sometimes to make it work with the players you have……and GT has a whole gang of good-to-great players. If I, the coach, can’t get them to play well as a team, it’s my problem and not theirs. Seems to me that has been the problem this year. No real adjustments to the offensive system, and a defensive scheme that doesn’t suit the talent.

Did any UGA players get arrested so far today? How about this week? Wasn’t UGAg ranked to start the year?

Did any Tech players sell their jerseys online then be DUMB enough to get caught?

mtraininjax

Rufus – Tech is talented, just young and they do have a brand new defense, 3-4 and it requires different speed than the 4-3 of last year. Losing last week was not talent related, we lost our QB, our team leader at the end of the first half, did nothing in Q3, and had a talented QB lead us to almost win the game. We beat the spread and did better than most Tech people thought we would, and had we not thrown an INT at the end of Q2, we probably go up even more to the locker room.

We have good players, our GREAT players left last year and are being paid now, as GREAT players are these days. CPJ is the same, we changed some coaches, Monken went to GA Southern and is doing well there, perhaps that and other chemistry are an issue, or perhaps its hard to repeat every year when you lose GREAT players early.

delusion – I confirmed with my girlfriend, who has an English degree from that university in Athens and is a writer/editor, so pretty sure she can be considered an expert. You’re=you are, everytime. Your expresses possession. So, when you say, “Y*&@ team lost…” it should always be YOUR. Also, Your can be used as a singular or plural when addressing possession. Finally, as Ross told Rachel about her letter (18 pages, front and back). Y-O-U-’-R-E is you are, Y-O-U-R is your. then they were soooo over, fine by me.

For the record, as long as we beat the puppies in Athens, season will be a success. I bet they are thinking the same thing at this point…because, they probably won’t beat anyone else.

Am I the only one that thinks our problem is really offense or defense but SPECIAL TEAMS?? I am pretty sure we get killed there every game. If you look at all of our losses SPECIAL TEAMS had a huge impact. CPJ needs to fire the ST coach and take it over himself. We can not afford to give up touchdowns and stupid penaltys that come back to kill us every game. On a side note, I think Tevin throws a more catchable ball than Nesbitt, but Nesbitt had a stronger arm. Overall though I think our passing game will be better which should open up our great rushing attack.

GO JACKETS!!

I am a Tech grad of ‘73. Being 1st in the nation for rushing offense is an asset, but no passing is the liability. So what does the net worth equal to after the liabilities are subtracted from the assets? About zero. I recall the pass happy team of ‘90 that will be honored Saturday. Hamilton loved to pass, and to run the cube draws. I don’t see Tech winning the ACC championship. They do not have a replacement for Demarius Thomas this year, and Allen is not very productive at 98 yards per game and one or two tds for the entire season.
