Nesbitt out for regular season with broken arm

BLACKSBURG, VA. — Georgia Tech quarterback Joshua Nesbitt is likely out for the season with a broken arm, according to coach Paul Johnson.

Nesbitt said he hit his right arm on Davon Morgan’s knee as he was trying to tackle him after an interception near the goal line in the second quarter. Nesbitt said the arm went immediately numb. He was taken to the locker room at halftime and didn’t return to the game, which Georgia Tech lost 28-21. The loss ended any hopes Georgia Tech had of defending its ACC championship.

After the game, with his arm tucked underneath his warm-up top, Nesbitt said he’s going to try to make it back for a bowl game, presuming Tech can win at least one of its three remaining games and qualify for the postseason for the 14th consecutive year. Tech could play in a bowl anywhere from six-eight weeks from now.

“I’m just trying to stay positive, keep positives thoughts going through my mind and just keep the team uplifted,” he said.

It was a bittersweet night for the senior.

With a 71-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, Nesbitt became the most prolific rushing quarterback in ACC history, breaking a record held formerly by Clemson’s Woodrow Dantzler.

Assuming he doesn’t return for the rest of this, his final season, Nesbitt will finish with 2,806 yards rushing and 3,276 yards passing.

Nesbitt said this setback makes his role as one of the team’s leaders even more important. He said his focus now will be on making sure that Tevin Washington, who took over at quarterback, stays focused.

“These guys didn’t come here to be perennial backups,” Johnson said. “They came to play.”

Washington led the team to one game-tying touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, and almost led them to another at the end of the game. However, the rally came up short when Washington was intercepted in the corner of the end zone by Rashad Carmichael.

Tech82 – his passing efficiency for the season is probably the worst of any QB in football – as our team rates near the bottom for passing versus all other Div 1 teams. His % completion rate is, I’m guessing, below 40%. That is bad. Obviously….you can’t win by just rushing the ball!! You, if a Tech alum, should have an IQ and be able to understand that. He has character and is good – but he is no Joe Hamilton.

Ahhhhhhh, here we go with the unclassy UGA fans bashing us!! Your team has just as much problems as us. But, at least we can’t accept we have problems, and when we lose we accept it, unlike UGA. As for excuses, and whining? You should be experience in this category!

Saint Simon,
You’re the type of UGA fan that is a joke, and very unclassy….but it’s typical!!! I was going for UGA the whole entire season expect Florida, and when they play us. It’s pointless to argue with a fan like you though because I know tons of other UGA fans and they are so much more classy, and have valid points!!!

high school – Our offense (you know, the one that sucks) leads the nation in rushing and averages 402 total yards per game. Your beloved mutts on the other hand average only 388 yards per game with a system they’ve been running for ten years.

High school is probably the best place for you. Why don’t you runa along back to class now?

YAWN – Rather ironic that you would mention Joe Hamilton and character in the same sentence. His (lack of) character is the reason he is working as a volunteer grad assistant at Ga State instead of being a paid assistant at his alma mater.

YAWN = Another thing – you stated that a team can’t win by only rushing the ball. Did you happen to notice that we won a conference championship last year – rushing the ball?

Nesbitt has character. that is what I said. Joe could throw the ball to a GT player!!!! As opposed to a player on the other team! Nesbitt completed 1 pass last night – to a VT player! Stop trying to find positives everytime we lose!! We lost the game! We didn’t win it.

Tough loss for the Jackets last night.
I hate that Nesbitt is out for the season after trying to make a tackle, of all things.
Even though I can’t say I’m a fan of GT, I have always admired #9, that kid is a player. I hope he has a speedy recovery.

I can’t believe no one is talking about David Sims. Tevon Washington played great but I was hoping to see Sims get a shot. He definitely runs the option as good and as tough as Nesbitt even though throwing the ball may be his achilles heel. We don’t have anyone to catch it anyway. Look for Sims at B back next year.

Josh Nesbit will be missed………I wish him well in the future!

We appreciate your effort and sacrafices over the past 3-4 years!

I would rather have Nesbit playing untill his eligibility was gone; however, this unfortunate injury does allow Washington to get better and have some really solid experience going into next season. GT will have a better season in 2011 because of this incident! I also hope we throw the ball more often from this point forward.

I have NEVER talked crap on a blog before and I NEVER use excuses but if Nesbitt wouldn’t have gone down, that game would have been over a long time ago. I’m sorry, but if you were a true VT fan w/ any football knowledge, you probably feel the same way. yes, VT came back, but only after GT went 3 and out 3 times in a row w/ a very young QB who was just trying to get the snap off. It took him a quarter to find his way…and when he did, he lit your guys up. GAWD, THIS PISSES ME OFF! WTF is going on w/ our season??

To all the idiots who complain that we can’t win because CPJ never passes:

In his final three years (05, 06 & 07), Chan Gailey’s offenses produced 349, 332 & 385 yards per game respectively and we averaged seven wins per season.

Under CPJ, last year we produced 422 yards per game and this year we are at 402. CPJ has average 10 wins per season.

So I ask you, would you rather run the ball and win or have a balanced attack and lose?

Nez, We win if you stay healthy! The D played great! We have a lot of young talent that is starting to rise up. Tevin will get some experience for next year, as will maybe Simms. I hate it happened to a true warrior, but it gives the young guys some real game experience! We’ll see you back for our bowl game.

That was the most heart I have seen this team play with all season. I thought we were done when Nesbitt got knocked out. But I started to feel better when the defense stepped up in the 3rd quarter and shut them down completely. By the end of the game I truly believed we were going to march down the field, score a touchdown, and go for 2, make it, and win the game. Hopefully CPJ will change his gameplan enough to play to Tevin’s strength, which is clearly throwing the ball and NOT running the option.

As a UGA alum, I feel for you Tech fans. It stinks when your best player is off the field for long periods of time as we had to endure this year. Still would have liked to have seen Nesbit in red and black and playing in the secondary. Would have been a great strong safety.

Nesbitt has been a great ambassador for GT and I hate to see his career end early. I was watching the game with some of my best “dawg” friends, and we all wanted to see him play in athens.

We have to move on and get ready for the “u”. I’m confident CPJ will have ‘em ready!

Joshua will be back for UGA game, my guess is if he’s feeling just a little better he will play.

Great player, we’ll miss him at Tech.

Tech played a nice game last night, 2nd best game they played all year (UNC was best). Tech still beat themselves with key false starts, dropped passes, special teams.
Hill need to red-shirt next year and just work on catching the ball, he has all the tools, makes great adjustments on the ball. can get open, but need to work on hands.

I marveled at Nesbitt’s high school career at Greene County and his college career at GT has been no less thrilling. Working Johnson’s offense isn’t easy and Nesbitt will be remember as one of the best and toughest options QBs in Div. 1 history.

Good luck to him in the bowl game and in his professional career.

No doubt about it Nesbitt will be missed, but like everyone says this will help us develop for the future. Keep your heads up guys, and yes if Nesbitt can play he deserves a shot at the bowl game (assuming we make one). And thanks to the UGA fans for the good comments about Nesbitt’s injury and his game.

Right, jasont13…
I’m sure Josh would have played behind Joe Cox. And how many league championships did you guys get to with #1 draft pick Matt Stafford?
I am shocked today to see the number of UGA fans actually posting with class, which is so far away from how they normally post. Thanks to those of you who have a semblance of civility.
Still think it’s a great tribute to this team that they led VT at VT in the 4th, had to play their backup QB the whole 2nd half, and this kid who had basically never played almost led them to the tying TD at the end. We’ll see what happens in the next few games. PJ is gonna have to coach his tail end off, unless the defense continues to come around like it is.
And, for goodness sake, can we get someone in here who knows how to do special teams? Abominable is too kind for these clowns.

Joshua – you have been so much fun to watch and I hate this has happened. I second the blogger who challenged the team to win out and get you back into a bowl game. You deserve that at the least! I think we could have won last night and I fault PJ somewhat in making that stupid call with 4th and 2 at midfield but it was a gutsy call and would have been great if it had worked. All in all, I am thrilled to see Washington out there, I think with some experience he could be something to be reckoned with. Joshua – that aboslute best of luck in recovery and know from this Jacket fan – you are admired so much from for your strength, wisdom, attitude and heart! I just hope I have been able to instill that with my twins! Get healed and get back at GT!

I’m going to reiterate comments already made a thousand times: this kid had more heart and toughness than the entire rest of the team combined. But, having said that, he has more than just about any other team combined.

Now for the good news… I think we’ll be fine with Washington. In a huge game, high pressure, he performed well; his passes were very accurate. This actually bodes well for the offense! He won’t run the ball as tough as Nesbitt, but defenses won’t be able to put 11 in the box against Washington due to his ability to pass the ball.

Give Washington a couple of weeks with the 1’s and he’ll be fine.

Regardless…. Thanks Joshua… it has been a great ride!
