Hicks back in practice for Jackets, Miller hopes to follow soon

Georgia Tech freshman post player Nate Hicks returned to practice for the Yellow Jackets this week and center Daniel Miller hopes not to be far behind.

Hicks missed a week of practice after suffering a concussion in practice on Oct. 17 when he took an elbow to the head. Miller has been out with what doctors determined to be strep throat, and thinks he might be back in practice as early as the first of next week.

Miller was originally thought to have mononucleosis, but he said doctors think he might have been on the tail end of a bout with mono when he came down with strep throat. He lost 15 pounds at his sickest and says he’s gained about half of that back.

Tech hosts an exhibition game against Clark-Atlanta Nov. 5 and opens its season against Charleston Southern on Nov. 12.

This is the year Hewitt can show he is a legit coach! No top 5 player in the nation coming in. No low post beast that will jump to the NBA after 1 year. Just a bunch of solid, quick perimeter players that can slash and run the floor. I hope that this team can be similar to the one led by Elder, Bynum and Jack. No pressure this year!!!!!!!

Saw somewhere that Tech was picked 9th in the ACC..Is this correct?..Hewitt has a chance to “Coach” if this is true.

Take 9th in the ACC and run, I also can’t spot 3 ACC teams that Tech can beat.

Give this team a chance. They have not played a game and you are deeming them worthless.

The bandwagon emptied years ago when Hewitt lost his top two assitants who proved that they actually coached the team. The basketball team finished at the bottom of the ACC in graduation rates again this year which shows that Hewitt could care less about his players graduating and just wants guys who might make the NBA so he can get free tickets to games when his beloved Knicks play. My guess is that there will be more people at the volleyball game than at the basketball game next week. This team is so bad that neither team could even win the scrimmage last week and had a tie. Hopefully Hank will not want his name tarnished with Hewitt “coaching” in an arena named after him and will go ahead and contribute another $7 million to buy the arrogant twitterer out and send him back to New York where he should have gone last year.

still don’t see why “the contract” can’t be terminated by the institute for lack of performance. it happens in real life all the time.

the contract should be terminated for getting the school put on probation two years ago for not graduating players and losing two scholarships. There were less than 200 people at the scrimmage last weekend and more than 1000 at the volleryball game next door at the same time. Even the students have lost interest in Hewitt’s “team”

Good news is he has so few big men, he cant possibly waste half a season deciding on the forwards playing rotation. Guards another story. Think Moe Miller will see any PT before the ACC season starts?

I agree with the sentiments that we should reserve judgement on this team and Hewitt until after they play the games. I know many GT fans here hate Hewitt, but please don’t let that poison your feelings on this team. I have no idea how good we are going to be this year, but I hope that our upside is similar to that 2004 team which didn’t have any superstars but had a lot of solid players. If we can finish in the middle of the pack in the ACC and make the NCAA tournament, I will consider that a successful season and should position us well for the future.

I’m with GT Sambo, why all the hate for CPH, he did take Tech to final four. Plays in best conf in B-ball, a conf where if you have a .500 win/loss your a pretty good team, took last years team to ACC final and NCAA’s.

I’m excited to see this team.

Hewitt should have been fired years ago when he couldn’t do anything with Javaris Crittenton and Thad Young.

I have often been critical of CPH (especially his press offense!) but I don’t get the hate. Just don’t get it. I was proud to be a GT fan in Greensboro watching the Jackets give eventual National Champ Duke ALL they wanted in the ACC title game. Proud!

STOP IT RIGHT NOW!!!!! Why is everyone so upset? Sure, we have lost some games and my defense is porous but why is everyone so down on us? If this bickering doesn’t stop right now I’m taking my NFL ring and I am going back to Va. That is if they will let me. Paul and I are trying to build a championship caliber team for you all so shut the hell up! One more unkind word about us and you won’t get an invite to the next fish fry? How about that smartasses? BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

10 Win Season, have you seen the non-conference schedule? If we lose one of those games I will be shocked. Maybe the Big 10 challenge game but the rest are low level competition. We could still go .500 in the ACC (which would be huge) and win 20 games and not make the NCAA’s. See what happened to VT last year.

Still, i’m with the others that say let’s support this team and cheer proudly for our school. Don’t let your distaste for Hewitt sour your support for your Institute.

And Al Groh, your a pathetic douche. Shouldn’t you be in Jax getting drunk and trying in vain to pick up Fla girls.

So many idiots talking crap about Hewitt..what a suprise. We will finish in the top half of the ACC and make the tourney. Mark it down.

BigTime Tech Fan, unfortunately, I believe we have only had one season in the ACC above .500 under Hewitt. Last year, with the most talent since Crittendon and Young, we mustered a disappointing 7-9 ACC record. We showed in the ACC tournament that we could compete with anyone in the conference. I just hope this year we have finally learned how to throw an inbounds pass when the other team is using a full-court press. (Note: These numbers might be slightly off. Going off memory here instead of looking at stats)

The reason we went 7-9 in the ACC last year is that we wasted half the season figuring out who the players were and who the bench warmers should have been. Its a recurring issue and thus my bit of sarcasm. Thats my biggest point of frustration, and it happens year after year.

The reasons we went 7-9 in the conference last year were two-fold. First, as stated by Outside Observer, we had no clue where or how to inbound the ball if the other team put on a press. I’ve never seen double-digit leads evaporate so quickly as I saw in Tech’s games last season. Second, with rare exceptions, the men’s Jackets team couldn’t hit late-game free throws if their lives depended on it. The brief turnaround in this stat occurred in the first game of the NCAA tournament, and is in fact the only reason we won that game.

I’ve been a Tech basketball fan since I attended the school in the early 80’s, and I guess I always shall remain so. I’m often disappointed in our final record, but I still enjoy cheering for EVERY Yellow Jacket team.

I wish the commenters above would not have mentioned the problems inbounding last year. That was so embarrasing to my alma mater. Hell, they could have tossed it up to the rafters as kinda like a jump ball when it fell back down. I believe more whites need to be represented on the team. I’m not so sure white hs players want to go to Tech since there’s a black coach there and mostly black players. The whites probably don’t think they have a chance of playing. If Tech keeps Hewitt, they should schedule some black colleges, and maybe drop out of the ACC basketball program, and join a black college basketball program. Schedule teams to play like Southern, Grambling, FAMU, Morehouse, Spellman, Atl Theological, Tuskegee Institute. Stay in the ACC for the other sports at Tech with white coaches such as CPJ and Danny Hall.
