AP Hoops poll is out and…

The Associated Press college basketball Top 25 poll came out today and Duke, the defending national champ, was the overwhelming No. 1 choice.

That wasn’t a surprise. The Blue Devils received 55 of 65 votes.

What was surprising is that just two other teams from the ACC, arguably the best conference in the country, made the initial poll: North Carolina at No. 8 and Virginia Tech at No. 21.

Three other ACC teams received votes, which is kind of like being Ralph Nader in a presidential election: N.C. State (10), Miami (4) and Georgia Tech (1).

The Big Ten, Big 12 and Big East each had four teams in the poll.

The poll:

1. Duke (55) 35-5 1,613 3
2. Michigan St. (8) 28-9 1,558 13
3. Kansas St. (2) 29-8 1,414 7
4. Ohio St. 29-8 1,368 5
5. Pittsburgh 25-9 1,310 18
6. Villanova 25-8 1,198 9
7. Kansas 33-3 1,172 1
8. North Carolina 20-17 1,034 -
9. Florida 21-13 997 -
10. Syracuse 30-5 920 4
11. Kentucky 35-3 917 2
12. Gonzaga 27-7 889 22
13. Illinois 21-15 773 -
14. Purdue 29-6 771 10
15. Missouri 23-11 700 -
16. Baylor 28-8 625 19
17. Butler 33-5 607 11
18. Washington 26-10 572 -
19. Memphis 24-10 551 -
20. Georgetown 23-11 363 14
21. Virginia Tech 25-9 288 -
22. Temple 29-6 265 12
23. Tennessee 28-9 252 15
24. BYU 30-6 198 17
25. San Diego St. 25-9 158 -

Others receiving votes: Wisconsin 126, Texas 107, Georgia 67, West Virginia 65, Minnesota 55, Florida St. 28, Wichita St. 28, UNLV 21, Richmond 17, Murray St. 15, Vanderbilt 14, N.C. State 10, Arizona 8, Connecticut 8, Colorado 7, Mississippi St. 7, UCLA 5, Miami 4, Ohio 4, Utah St. 4, Xavier 4, Dayton 3, Old Dominion 2, Georgia Tech 1, New Mexico 1, Wofford 1.

“Unanimous” means something specific. Getting 55/65 votes is different from being “unanimous.”

ACC is arguably the most overblown and overrated conference in the country and the pollsters just now figured it out.

I’m an idiot and have no clue which conference has produced recent NCAA champions in basketball.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t “unanimous” mean “all the 1st place votes?” My math shows 55 of 65 is not 100%.

I have no clue who gave us 1 vote, but if Georgia received 67, Tech is seriously being under rated!

Duke is good, not the conference. Look at the polls dim whit. One is the loneliest number there could ever be. The remaining members are overblown jokes.

bruce mac – it must be just like the SEC in football then. Two really good teams and a bunch of runts.

Yea two teams that includes LSU, ALABAMA and Florida and now AUBURN is number one in the country. Yea 4 is the same as 1. Glad I took math at UGA and not in ACC.

UF, Bama, and LSU have recently won championships. Auburn hasn’t.

SEC = Gladys Knight and the Pips

Gladys = Bama LSU UF

Pips = Vandy Ole Miss Miss St Uga, etc

Duke is good, so is UNC and Tech and Wake will be there as well. NC St. has someplaymakers but can they keep it together for a season. Also Maryland and Va. Tech will be in the running as well. The ACC will put at least 6 teams in the ncaa tourny.

UGA gets better this year with a strong inside game but doesn’t make the ncaa tourny, they still don’t have the guard play to get over the hump. And just to rile bruce up, the dawgies fall in atlanta this year bank on it.

UGA and Tech. In football we argue over whose losses are worse. In basketball we compare who got more “other receiving votes”. This is just getting sad.

You can have the votes bruce. They don’t mean crap, especially in a preseason poll. You gotta get to the tourney to talk some smack. Thats something your bulldogs won’t do. Enjoy watching tech in March AGAIN while your boys sit in athens!

Superior guard play? Is that what you call it when you lead the world in back court tunrovers and you can’t get the ball in bounds. You guys are hilarious. Hilarious I say.

I think UGA may have received more votes because of Thompkins (best college big man in GA, maybe in SEC?) and several other decent players. Right now we have NO experienced big men, and most of our returning players have been up and down (albeit with some flashes of greatness). The only way to prove them wrong is to go out there and win a bunch of games. Let’s see how the GT/UGA game on December 7 turns out. Here’s hoping we win at least 20 again.

mwh6767

Uga didn’t have a player in the top ten in the sec in either assists, steals, 3 pointers or field goal percentage. That’s not gonna cut it. No winning record again this season. Take tompkins and leslie out of the game and uga has nothing.

Frnakly, I am surprised that GT has any votes – I wouldn’t vote for them as Top 25 preseason
The great thing about college basketball is that you win your titles on the court not in a beauty contest. Polls are nice to talk about but it is wins, losses and RPI that gets you in the tourney.
All 3 schools in the Triangle are going to have good seasons. Duke and UNC are loaded and not even Sidney can screw up with the talent he has coming in this year. All 3 teams have 1 and dones coming in (Irving, Barnes and Leslie)
Interesting that there is a UGA troll claiming that the ACC is a one team conference when 3 different ACC teams have won the NCAA championship in the last 10 years (5 championships total).

Paul, be careful. You don’t want to offend the SEC lovers. Saying the best conference is the one who produces championships is just crazy talk. Wait… maybe I have heard that before. I wonder where… Anyways, I agree with your point about Tech. Right now, we are an unproven team. Maybe down the road if the new offense is effective, I would consider giving Tech a few votes. But at the moment, I prefer to stay out of the national spotlight until we get a handle on our team for this season.

To all THUGA fans, it ain’t where you start it is where you finish. When THUGA has a winning record or actually wins something important like their division or their league or gets a NCAA bid then you can talk the talk, until then just SHUT UP!

If the ACC is overrated in Basketball then what does that make the SEC in football? Really? You have no argument there. The ACC always makes it to the final four. The SEC never makes it into the tournament. Unless Calipari moves to Kentucky and brings all his recruits with him… The ONLY exception. The ACC as a whole in basketball is better than the SEC as a whole in football. Guranteed. Thats why its nice to be a fan of the ACC. We have more than one sport to watch and can be competitive at both. So great to be a Yellow Jacket and not some drooling mutt.

I remember the last time UGA fans got so excited by a pre-season poll, ranked #1 in football – How did that turn out? They got beat at home by GT with a brand new coach in the rain, and wasn’t even near the discussion for championship. Too bad, that was billed as their best team since the Herschel days…

The experts all say that Mark Fox is a great coach. The experts all say that UGA lost a lot of close games last year so they are close to being good. The experts all say that UGA is ready to take the next step. Newsflash: The experts are wrong sometimes, that’s why they play the games on the court! We will see what happens, but I think you can’t annoint UGA as the champion of anything until they win a few games. The last time UGA made the NCAA tournament, they flew in on a tornado (and flew out just as quickly).

Yeah, the ACC is overrated as a conference. In the last 10 years, the ACC has sent 4 different teams to 6 championship games (10 total final 4 appearances), winning 5 national championships. What has your conference done lately?
