Quotes from Paul Johnson

A transcript of Paul Johnson’s quotes from Wednesday’s ACC teleconference, courtesy of the conference:

Opening Statement

“Certainly the bye week comes at a good time for us. We have played

eight straight games, we are pretty beat up. We have been fortunate that

we don’t have a lot of major injuries, but we had a chance to take a

couple of days off. Now we get cranked back up and are getting ready for

probably the marquee team in the league, or at least the one playing the

best. They seem to be blowing everybody out. When you look at tape and

Virginia Tech, they are dynamic on offense. I think Tyrod Taylor is

having a great senior season and he is such a play maker, and they are

always good on defense. Bud Foster always does a good job. They are

always going to be sound, so it will be a tough challenge coming off

what I thought was a disappointing loss. I thought Clemson played well,

they played physical and got after us, but we did not make enough plays

to win the game.”

You already have one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the

country. Do you think you have to do anything different to prepare for

another one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the country in Tyrod

Taylor?

“It is hard to prepare for him. We have not been able to tackle him in

three years. What he is so good at is making things out of broken plays.

I was talking this morning, and you would be hard pressed to go back and

look at one of their games where he hasn’t scored one touchdown or

maybe two through scrambles or finding guys behind people. You can try

and spy him but you have to have a guy that can tackle him. It does not

do any good if you have someone in there and he can’t get him down. We

have had a really hard time containing him, and when you couple that

with all the quality backs and receivers they have it presents a hard

problem. They are a good team.”

Is there anything you are going to try and adjust since Clemson was

able to basically shut down your rushing attack last week?

“Well, I think we rushed for about 250 yards, what we need to do is

score in the red zone. We are probably not going to rush for 350 yards

every week. What we have to do is take better advantage of the

opportunities we have when we get down there. We have to start scoring

touchdowns instead of field goals, and maximize that way and see if we

can start hitting bigger plays. To your question, we got to get back to

the fundamentals, the basics. A lot of the mistakes we made last week

were fundamental errors. Some of it you have to give Clemson credit,

they whooped us at times, but a lot of our stuff was self-inflicted.”

Clemson said they spent a week in August learning how to defend the

option; Virginia Tech went to Iowa to learn what they did against you

guys. Did your coaches go anywhere this summer to learn about any

opponents?

“Our defensive coach, Coach Groh, went to New England and spent a week

with Coach Belichick. Offensively, we did not go anywhere.”

Obviously that is a choice, but why not?

“Well, there are not a lot of people doing what we are doing. I got a

pretty good idea of what Navy is doing. In past years we have gone to

West Virginia to see Rich when I was with Navy. We have had coaches come

in here, we had coaches from Mississippi State and from a bunch of other

schools come in here.”

What do you think is the biggest difference between last year’s team

and this year’s team that is giving you a little bit of trouble that

was not last year?

“The big thing is third down conversions. Last year I think we even led

the country and finished second with 52%. This year we are sitting down

in the 30’s. We were pretty good at turnover margin last year, and

this year we are not. We just haven’t executed as well too, we had a

nucleus on the offensive line coming back that had some starts but

somebody sh

owed me a stat the other day that we are 105th in the country

in offensive line starts. That has been inconsistent. We miss Bay-Bay

Thomas, he was a big play guy. We haven’t had a guy step up and take

that role. We have to be way more efficient throwing the ball then we

have been. We don’t have to throw it a lot, but we have to be more

efficient. Other than that we are doing just great.”

What is your approach to a bye week? You probably give your guys a few

days off. Do you want your guys to not worry about football?

“We took Monday off, I told them I did not want to see them, and we

always take Sunday off. We started back yesterday and will practice

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Then we will probably give them the

chance to go home for the weekend, since they have not had a chance for

eight weeks. We will come back and have a regular Wednesday practice on

Monday, Tuesday would be our Thursday practice, and then Wednesday will

be a travel day for us. Then we will probably come back and take Friday

and Saturday off, and the come back and gain one day for the next

game.”

Is there an ideal time for an off week during the season?

“Well, it just varies. Truly you never know when a good time is.

Certainly you would like to have it when you are beat up and banged up a

little up. We have a brutal stretch of games coming up here, so it is

good to get a break and re-group.”

Do you vote on the coaches’ poll?

“I don’t.”

I am just trying to get a read on the Boise State’s and TCU’s. Can

you see the argument for them making it to the championship game if they

remain unbeaten or would you rather see a one-loss SEC or Big 12 team in

there?

“I don’t know who would deserve it more. I believe they have every

right to play for it, I have said before that I am a proponent of having

a play-off. I don’t want to vote in the coaches’ poll to be quite

truthful, because I don’t see the teams on the West Coast play or any

of the other teams play and I don’t think the other coaches do either.

You have your game and certainly if you have your game at 3:30 on

Saturday then who are you watching play? You are not seeing anybody

play, you might see the scores. The other problem I have with it is when

they make your vote public. I might be getting ready to play Virginia

Tech and I think they are really good and I vote them 10 and I don’t

vote for my own team. Is that telling the team I don’t think you have

a chance, they are just way better than you? I think there is just

probably be a better way to do it, just my personal opinion.”

Tech is fortunate to have Johnson and Groh.

Now I can enjoy the annual Georgia beatdown at the hands of Florida.

Fire Paul Johnson. His offense is a joke. It is only good for make a terrible team competitive. I want more than that. He has no plans on changing and adding a little more passing. He is arrogant about his offense to a fault. How many unranked teams are going to beat us this year before most fans realize he is taking us down. Kansas, NC State, Clemson —-Kansas OMG. This is his 3rd year and he has HIS players now. What is the excuse. UGA will kick our tell just like they did last year.

Some of you care more about Florida beating UGA than the fact we are getting worse. Teams that prepare for PJ’s option shut it down. I will enjoy UGA losing to Florida, but UGA has a bye week before playing us. They are going to shut down PJ again.

Georgia always has more talent than Tech and it really doesn`t matter.

Georgia will always be a loser with many more daddies and If they are lucky will play in Shreveport during their good years.

The losses this year have, for the most part, come from mental mistakes. The offense moved the ball decent against Clemson but failed to score touchdown’s as CPJ pointed out. If Tech can come out and play mistake free football they can get a W against VT or Miami. Need to get back to outscoring the opponent.

Reality Stinks-
Im guessing you are a UGA fan. Im getting so sick of people downing PJ and downing tech and complaining because we have 3 losses, two of which came from decent opponents. NC state is a heck of a team this year, and Clemson has come up short a lot this year but they took the #1 team in the country into overtime and lost by a field goal. For crying out loud, do you guys really think that we are better off with Gailey? I dont want to hear it about all of Gailey’s recruits. The 2007 class was the best tech has had in years and most of them are gone, but all of Gaileys other classes honestly sucked. An occassional 4 star a few 3 stars and a few 2 stars. PJ is pulling in an average class right now, but i think a lot of people forget that last years class brought in five to six 4 stars according to Rivals. Its not as big as the 2007 class, but every bit as good. And Vad Lee and Jabarai Hunt Days are going to be studs coming in this year. Most of PJ’s good recruits havent got a chance to play yet. Everyone who is on the field is from 2008 and leftovers from 2007. AND MOST OF ALL, people are downing PJ after he led tech to the best season we’ve had in over ten years, and one of the best seasons since the 1990 team. Last years class had solid defensive recruits, and I am confident that Groh will be better in the future, especially with more talent. EVERYBODY JUST CHILL. As stated before, Tech is not a football factory. We are going to have a down year every 3-4 years.

JACKETfan12

October 27th, 2010
8:26 pm

And YES, i am thoroughly disappointed with this season, but better years are to come, aside from what all of the 15 year old UGA fans who sit on mommys computer say. PJ may be a bit caucky, but soon enough his time will come again and he will whoop on UM, VT, and UGA like he already has. Keep in mind, he is 1-1 against all three. Not a bad record

JACKETfan12

October 27th, 2010
8:31 pm

And its not that PJ cannot bring in great recruits. Last years class was great, but honestly, losing Giff Smith was the biggest blow to tech in recent years. He brought in last year’s class and also 2007’s class. He was a heck of a recruiter. Im not so sure of mccollum. Hopefully he will find a pipeline somewhere. Giff has georgia on lockdown. You would think this years class would be top 20 after winning a conference championship, but losing Giff is showing this year. I was afraid of this

Your a retard if you think Kansas and NC State are decent teams and Clemson has not been relevant in 19 yrs

You can have all the great recruits you want but that stupid middle school option veer is a joke and your now wittnessing the result of what real competition will do against it now that it has seen it

Not that the ACC is real competition any way

Reality Stinks, don’t count your chickens before they hatch. Football is all about blocking and tackling. The option based spread has the same principles and concepts as any other offense. It boils down to execution. You either do it or you don’t. And there is no high school about it.

JACKETfan12

Reality Stinks- You are right, reality does stink. UGA is looking at another 6-6 or 7-5 season this year after getting bumshuffled by Auburn and Florida. I thought UGA got a class of “the promised ones” every year. You need to go worry about Mark Richt’s status before you hate on tech. You are the retard. I think youre jealous because our coach gives a rat’s butt about his players’ discipline.

And talent is the majority of tech’s problem right now. PJ has proved that his “option veer” peewee offense can beat good teams. we have just been outmaned. PJ is a great coach with average talent mixed with a few studs.

Jacketfan is right on. I’m impressed with the new class…on paper. I think we need better position coaches however. I believe in CPJ and Groh With all those A-backs, we should be laying licks on the opposing secondary, not the other way around. That said, I’m a true believer and Jacket nation needs to up our support of our school’s program. Get involved!

Jacketfan is right we are having a down year but I think there are good things to come. CPJ does need to pay attention to his young guys though he spends too much time on a few key players. Then those players don’t pan out (Nesbitt) and you’re stuck with nothing. I’ve heard little about the red shirt squad. Hey Doug maybe that’s something to look into. Someone told me they had a good WR and kicker/punter that was good as well.

You guys have very short Memories. CPJ is 25-11 thats a pretty good winning percentage. That includes Bobby Ross that was 58-31 so I think CPJ has earned a little respect! Are there problems? Yes? Is CPJ the man who can fix those problems? Yes! Look at the Bull puppies, a few years ago CMR was the king of that city today they are ready to run him out on a rail. The bull puppies could loose 7 games this year and I hope they do. Guy you have to remember these are kids that are 18-21 they are not paid professional athletes. Before you cast that stone who would you get that would/could do better. Shut your mouth and get behind the team become a Fan and support your team through thick or thin!

ashamedjacket,

get a grip. We have NO ONE that can catch the ball. We are young and getting younger. The recruits coming in should help a ton. The offense works well when you can throw a couple of balls and make them respect your pass game. We don’t need the big 80 yd plays that BeyBey got us (while we do miss him), we just need that to be a viable option so that the lanes will open up. The defense is in its first year and we desperately need talent on that end of the field. It is coming. not only are we missing the pass game, but the blocking down field. I don’t agree with Allen at BBack. He hasn’t proved to be as explosive as Dwyer and we desperately miss his blocking around the outside. You should check out our recruits coming in next year and 2012. He is doing a good job getting guys in, esp on defense. Let Johnson get his players in and then we will talk. 2012 and 2013 will be a good test. He will have been here a while and a lot of the 2011 guys will be out of their redshirt year. We should be better next year too, but it’s a tough call cause Nesbitt will be a tough replacement.

You can’t go all crazy cause we are having one down year after losing 4 studs. Chan’s recruiting was 5star or bust. What you are seeing is the bust half of that equation coupled with a learning curve.

settle down! It will be ok!

JACKETfan12

Thats right. People keep saying that Johnson won with all of Gailey’s recruits and cant without them. Most of the players on the field right now are gailey’s and from the 2008 class which johnson came in half way through. 2009 was johnson’s first true class and only 4-5 of those guys start (cross, j burnett, orwin smith, stephen hill, will jackson). The rest are Gailey’s below average players. Johnson has a lot of young talent developing. And keep in mind, tech does not have a true 3-4 type defensive front 7. all are 4-3 players filling roles. even t.j. barnes is not an ideal NT. cross and jason peters are both good ends, but we are in desparate need of a dominate nose tackle and a play-making OLB. Attouchi is promising and as I said earlier, Jabari Hunt Days will be a stud. Im hoping big things from him. I know he hasnt even put on a jersey at tech yet, but hes dominate in HS and has blown away the combines. We have yet to see much of Johnson’s talent he has recruited. Airyn Willis will be a good reciever also when he comes in. PJ is going to try him at qb, but I think Vad Lee will beat him out and Airyn will move to reciever and shine there. Again, theyre only high schoolers so no one really knows
