The good and the bad in Tech’s loss

Reviewing Georgia Tech’s 27-13 loss at Clemson on Saturday:

The game that was

Georgia Tech had many things go right on its way to the Orange Bowl last season. This season, things aren’t going their way with as much regularity and the result is losses. The odd thing is in each of the three losses there has been a single moment when, if one play is made, the result could have been different. On Saturday it was the failure to recover a fumble on a kickoff return. Against N.C. State and Kansas, it was allowing third-and-long conversions after Tech had just scored to take the momentum.

What we learned

1. The team needs to get mean. Paul Johnson said afterward that his team got whacked around. Brad Jefferson said the defense had trouble beating blocks (not the first time this season that has been said), and Johnson later said the offensive line needs to put its hand on the ground and blow somebody off the ball. That’s not all technique, some of that is just wanting to be meaner than the man in front of you.

2. Special teams need special attention. Tech isn’t good enough to overcome too many mistakes. It had a season’s worth of errors on special teams in the loss to Clemson, with six errors made. The punt-return unit, which has had issues throughout the season, had a penalty for roughing the kicker, and the punt coverage unit was called for a late hit. It also failed to down a punt at the 1-yard line.

3. The offense needs a game-changer. With the exception of Orwin Smith, Tech has nobody on the edge that can be consistently counted on to either catch the ball or take the option and turn upfield for a big play. Smith has become Tech’s most dependable receiver with two catches for 37 yards on Saturday in a group that had more drops. Smith also had four rushes for 54 yards. Anthony Allen was a game-changer on the edge in the rushing game last season at A-back. Because teams are focusing on taking out Joshua Nesbitt and Allen, who is now a B-back, one of the A-backs needs to step up … and the offensive line and wide receivers need to help by sealing the edge.

Injury report

There appeared to be no significant injuries.

Numbers game

6.2

Rushing yards per carry on 38 carries allowed by Georgia Tech on Saturday. The 236 yards allowed was a season high. Tech was susceptible to cut-back runs last season, and that hasn’t changed this year.

Sound bite

“We’re going to have to go back, watch the tape and get this thing worked out quick because we’ve got a couple more big games coming up.” — Allen said, referencing games at Virginia Tech and at home against Miami.

Loose ends

Nesbitt needed 44 yards to become the ACC’s most prolific rushing quarterback. He now needs 42 yards after netting just 2 yards on 15 carries against the Tigers. It was his worst rushing performance since Johnson took over as coach and an example of the offensive line’s issues. … Twice this season Tech has been held to a touchdown or less in the first half. … Tech didn’t force a turnover for the fifth game this season.

What’s next

Georgia Tech gets more than a week off to regroup before heading to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech. Tech’s chances of making it back to the ACC championship game are very slim, but they include needing a win over the Hokies.

Doug: I wonder if a net of 2 yards on 15 carries (0.1 yard per carry)
does not set a GT record or maybe an NCAA record low for a QB
running an option offense? Maybe no such record kept to prove or disprove
this statement. Anyway, besides the offensive line being the culprit, why did
the play callers not try something else when they saw Nesbitt was being stopped? Just curious.

Who could win a tight game in the entire country with as many stupid mistakes early from special teams? We had a nice stop to give us the mo from the start, but alas, the mo was shot in the foot. The first 10 minutes were a total special team nightmare. The entire offence and defence were given a steep steep mountain they were not qualified to climb.

When we lose a game we lose it in all aspects. The defense makes a stop and the special teams group makes a stupid mistake and gives it back. The offense wakes up and scores to get it close and the defense lets the other team run it right up their gut for an easy score.
I’m still wondering what Al Groh is doing as DC. We keep starting a NT that is consistently pushed out of the way by a single player. No wonder the other team can simply run it right up our gut.
Got a long week to correct things or else we will be pounded by VT.

Let’s all stay behind this team. Clemson’s D Line is very good and credit is due to them. Special teams errors & no room for Joshua to operate lost the game. We all know there is a drop-off from last year, but there are 3 big games left + Duke. This team is capable of putting it together and winning any of these games. Fan base plays a role in successful programs. If you enjoyed the success last year, you need to support the team now and let’s see how they do…..

Face it we got whipped on all sides. The Groan defense appears to be no better than before. It seems to only have success against lesser opponents.

Most under utilized player on the field is Orwin Smith.

S. Hill’s position of wide receiver needs to be changed to “tall guy in uniform”, because in my book a receiver has to actually receive. Although

I guess that we didn’t expect Clemson to plan to stop Nesbitt.

No sacks on Pakrer? Again, weak d line, and weak o line. Sorry guys, but you need to be in the weight room instead of at the V.

For having the deepest team in his tenure, it appears they may be deep, just not very good.

I’m frustrated and I’m sure CPJ is frustrated. Here is the difference between Last year and this year. The Offensive line needs to take controll of the game. Something it has not done. We need a big play guy. Stephen Hill is not it and won’t be it. I’m sorry but he can’t catch. Tall yes, Fast yes, Can’t catch. Surly someone on Tech’s team can catch the ball. Its not the QB’s falt the puts the ball where I see other teams make plays. Last year Bay Bay made the plays when it came crunch time. This year we don’t have that guy and that is the difference between last year and this year.
After saying all that I’m not giving up on the team. I still believe in our coach, I believe in our players and I believe in our school. GA TECH until the end win or loose!

Let Steven Hill watch from the pine for a couple of games. Move Orwin Smith to receiver to show him how it should be done. Then, throw SHORT passes. Forget the 30 + attempts. Stop with the desperation heaves to Hill. If a team stops our run game, and can stop a short passing game, then they out-thunk us. But we haven’t tried all the options yet.

You and I CAN”T be the only people seeing this. The reason Nesbit’s passer rating is so low is 1) receivers keep dropping easy catches, 2) He keeps throwing hail Mary’s. CPJ, THROW FOR AROUND 10 YARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It may be time to start playing another QB so GT can have somebody ready next year who has taken some gameday snaps…

I don’t think that it would really matter much at this point, because even if somebody could actually catch a pass, Nesbitt seems to have regressed in his already suspect passing ability.

This offense must be run to perfection for it to work, and that has not happened all year. Add to the fact that the passing game is non-existant, and it is downhill from here.

I won’t even get into the defensive issues but I would not blame it on Groh – he has very little quality to work with.

This program under CPJ has stalled this year, and if there is not marked imporvement in the next year or two, it may be time (God forbid again) to make a change.

I was a season ticket holder for 35 seasons, and it looks to me like we are getting manhandled on both lines! Until our lines start blocking people, and getting pressure on the other quarterback, we will struggle to win games. Stephen Hill does not catch the ball well, and Joshua had a BAD game against Clemson with his reads. It is a game of fundamentals that we are not doing well–blocking and making the tackle on their ballcarriers! Stupid mistakes, penalties, etc., are killing us! The coaches can only do so much. The players on the field have got to want it badly enough to concentrate, and play smart football! I don’t see the fire in their belly that seems to show that they want to win more than the other guys like I saw last year!

It is a SYSTEM. If the defense does this, Tech can do that. You can’t say, OK, we’re giving the ball to the B-back or pitching it to the A-back so he can make a play. Clemson used a staggered defnesive line formation that I’d never seen before – both D-Ends played upright and off the line. It seems apparent that the good teams are starting to understand how to play against CPJ’s offense. And if you can’t pass out if it, it’s gonna get worse.

The O line and D line will not be bettter until next year. Need to use the talented skill players to effect change. Al G you better send some backers and DB’s on some stunts son and mix it up or UGA will run it on every play all day long like last year. If we stand still nothing will change. Change will only be effected by using our skill players more creatively.

Agree with CPJ’s spost-game assessment.

Clemson has “veterans” on the D-Line. By comparison, GT has “rookies.”
GT O-Line simply got manhandled at LOS.

UP UNITL NOW: Stephen Hill has shown he is not capable of catching ANYTHING more than 5 yards past the LOS.

GT secondary was out of position a lot on Saturday.

GT D-Line got pushed around pretty good too.

HOWEVER……….VT’s D is not nearly as good as Clemson.

Lets be realistic, losing all the talent to the NFL and others is fact of life. No coach will admit to a rebuilding year. But, CPJ is building a program and this was always going to be a tough year. Tech had a great season last year and can still recover this year for a good season if the younger players stop making mistakes. It is realistic to believeTech will win its remaining home games and lose the remaining road games.
Clemson is a good team and Tech was in it despite all the mistakes and on the road. Assuming we beat Duke & maybe UM, we are going bowling and CPJ should finally get a bowl win.

What the crap happened? I didn’t get to watch it because I was headed to the UGA game.

Looks like y’all are figuring out a harsh reality about trying to replace NFL caliber players with good college players like we did last year with Stafford/Moreno vs Cox/Ealey.

Defense gave up a ton of rushing yards? New scheme. Maybe it is the jimmys and joes instead of the x’s and o’s.

it’s funny to see everyone become so negative, or even jump off the bandwagon when Tech can still win the ACC this year. All they have to do is beat Virginia Tech, Miami, and Duke, and hope Virginia Tech loses to either North Carolina or Miami. Not that much of a stretch. This team’s just inconsistant. Nesbitt is still a great QB in our offense, and our defense just needs to play with more confidence and keep blitzing.

Take what UGA has done the past few weeks as a model for what we need to do. I’m a GT fan, but UGA has turned around a season that looked awful (ask any UGA fan), and is now the hottest team in the SEC East. Believe it or not, both UGA and GT are in the same position now, with tough games ahead and still in contention to win their respective divisions. UGA has their ship sailing in the right direction it seems, while Tech needs to right the ship by the time they play VT in Blacksburg next Thursday.

This is not going to get better. Did you see our defensive back backing up to the endzone instead of attacking the Clemson reciever that caught the ball. It was third down and an aggressive play would have stopped the first down much less the touchdown. We have very poor efforts by some of our players, and the offense is a disaster. Not sure why some of these players are not giving the effort, but something is definitely missing from this team. No chemistry, no real leadership and it seems no guts. You are not going to beat anyone this day and time scoring 13 points. Listen we lost to Kansas, the worst team in division one football. Maybe they can beat Duke, but the other games will be beat downs if they do not change things right away, and after 8 games it is hard to imagine the change we need. Just a piss poor year, but CPJ will have em back next year. Maybe some of the younger guys will step up and be leaders as this team has none that is eveident at this time.

Good game, Tech got beat everywhere, simply got beat by the better team.
Heck, Clemson played Auburn (#1) better then anyone in the SEC has so I’ll take this loss. CPJ has this team pegged, they are real close to being a real good team but it like they just never step up. They kill drives by a bad play almost every time, it does not look like team have them stopped but a bad pitch or something will put them in a hole.

Defense, inside linebackers were lowering their heads trying to take on 300 pound guards, could not even see what was going on with their head in the chest of the OL.

Nice game by Clemson, solid play everywhere, QB was off and they still won.

@theGRdream: we’re in total agreement. I kept thinking as I read the blog’s comments that they were just like UGA blogs a month ago, only with player’s/coaches’ names being different. UGA is finally beating the teams they’re supposed to beat, but the next few weeks will tell us if it’s anything more. GT has discovered just how much they miss the players who left for the NFL, as did UGA last year. (UGA’s funk lasted longer than I anticipated, but GT fans can hope that GT’s will not.)

Everyone thought it impossible for UGA to win the SECe, but suddenly that scenario just might play out. GT’s situation is amazingly similar–it can still happen. I wouldn’t bet on either team to do it, though.

I also agree with the poster who suggested that it’s time to play some other folks for a bit. I still curse silently when I think of the playing time Aaron Murray could have had last year had the staff not stubbornly stuck with Joe Cox all game every game. When Nesbitt’s gone will GT have anyone @QB who’s actually played in a live game?

A month from now we might have two 5-6 teams in a desperate fight to avoid a losing season. A month ago that didn’t seem possible (we all thought that only 1 team would be in that position). Should be an interesting home-stretch.

CPJ has been the GT coach for 2.5 years. His first year was fair and last year was also fair. Now, winningttat ACC thing, in 2009, means nothing because look at the 2010 early season humiliations that the ACC received by playing out of conference. That embarrassing record of defeat for the entire ACC speaks for itself.

With Va Tech and Miami and UGA on the horizon …………..GT is looking at 3 more losses. These three schools ( UGA is simply horrible ) will out muscle and shove GT all around the lot. They also have in common ……….1.) better athletes and 2.) Speed. Joshua Nesbitt has become a national laughing stock too.

CPJ told us that Al Groh, with “all of his 1960s era NFL contacts would boost our D play”. Now, that too has to be weighed.

GT over 43 years sees a new football coach every 3.5 years. Tick, tock, tick tock. IS CPJ soon to be the next one? Ga Southern might take him back or Elon College or maybe even West Georgia University or Montezuma High School.

The old GT crowd are not happy. They miss the SEC and are humiliated playing in the ACC.

Nesbitt is a nice enough kid and an OK running back – but unless he learns to pass, this offense will stay boxed in and keep losing. The smart coaches have figured out the gimmick – you have to have a threat of a pass to keep defense off-balance. Teams can play 11 men on the line to stop the run because the QB cannot pass and the receivers cannot catch.

Wake up people! The problem is our recruiting! We are recruiting southern conference players. We get mauled by decent teams because we are aweful in the trenches!Wake up and accept the truth!PJ has to make changes hiring recruiting coaches. He recruits like he is at Ga Southern. The alumni need to get after PJ on his glaring weakness of recruiting good players especially front seven on D.

Amazing what the loss of one receiver to the pros can do to an option team.

For GT they need to make some neat lil changes. Here is my plan:

Go with Aaron Murray at QB. He can run and throw the ball. Perfect for the triple bone offense. He is also very intelligent ………..something that um, ah, the existing GT Qb lacks.

Put Waushaun Ealey at A back. He is a ball player and has grown up in the very manly SEC. In an ACC contest he might score 10 TDs.

Put UGA’s Kenarius Gates at right tackle. He is only a true frosh at 6′8″ and 330 lbs but he is a man already in the very manly SEC. He also played HS ball near where Nesbitt played. A natural this move would be. They could be pals.

At D end ……….go with UGA’s Justin Houston. Wow! Why not? He is a man and yes, grew up in the SEC. He will immediately put the fear of GOD in any ACC school, or ……….SEC for that matter.

At corner back go with UGA’s Cummings Sanders ………all 6′3′ and 215 lbs with speed. He is a developing corner for sure. Fill out GT’s d backfield with # 09 Alec Ogletree at safety. He too is 6′3″ and weighs a neat 220.

Now …………….throw in Todd Granthom as D co ordinator and get rid of AL Groh and GT might have a shot. Bobo can replace CPJ and that will really BOOST GT’s chances of winning.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH

This team is close—-well let me tell you folks—-Close only counts in horseshoes and Hand Grenades.
It is well documented that I dont like CPJ’s system so I wont get into that. All I have been hearing is wait until he gets his players. Just look at it—these are his players and it dosent make any difference. The reason they are not doing well, is other teams are learning how to defense his system. Defense—-CPJ teams have never had a defense. As for Groh—he is playing a 3 4 defense and should be coaching a 4 3. He just dosent get it.

I can definitely tell who is a UGA troll on this board. “And tech signed who?” has zero understanding of recruiting. Why are we getting pushed around on the OL and DL lines? Because we have guys who were not recruited for those systems playing those positions. “It is time to review his era” is clearly a UGA troll, given the way he disparages the ACC. Yes, the ACC is bad, but have you looked at the SEC East? CPJ is a much better coach than Chan Gailey or Mark Richt could ever hope to be. GT is GT, we are never going to be Alabama, Texas, or USC, but we have a coach who can hopefully help us to overachieve every year like we did the last two years.

You know NOTHING about recruiting! We have recruited very well the last two years and we are on pace to have another solid recruiting class for 2011. If you are expecting us to recruit as well as UGA, you are going to be disappointed.

The “star system” for rating recruits can surely be misleading, Look at O. Smith, a two star recruit who now is Tech’s top, or nearly top, offensive player. The linebackers have really been a disappointment. And how is Chris Jackson coming along. He should be able to catch the ball either as a wr or aback. Watch of D. Smith to be a really good qb next year.

They didn’t “FIGURE OUT” our offense, S.Hill dropped a touchdown pass in the endzone, we had several bad pitches, and Nesbitt inexplicably handed the ball off to Anthony Allen three straight times inside the 10 and was stopped for almost no gain three straight times!

First of all, we have the same latitutude of admitting the same players that UGA, ALA, or UF… There is NO excuse for subpar recruiting, No academic reasons, NONE! So for all you people that want to throw the academic reason, forget it…..

While I totally disagree with GT Sambo I would argue that it’s unreasonable to think we can recruit with schools that can hide thier players in majors and classes that take the equivalent IQ of a 4 year old to pass.

I’m just saying, there’s no reason we should sign players whose only other offers are Wake Forest and The Citadel.

GT Jake,
You are wrong!
Recruiting rankings per scout.com, 2009 (first full cycle for CPJ) – 32, 2010 – 41, 2011 – 39. Personally, I consider that pretty good for a relatively new coaching staff. Much better than most of Chan’s rankings from 2001 to 2008.

Curriculum has changed since I was in school. I’m not here to argue the hypocrisy of the NCAA… or the hypocrisy of schools having certain majors that would allow the football players to be succesful. I have been there, there are football players at GT that would not be there if it not for football. I don’t care, it’s silly to think that we(GT) are simply recruiting student athletes. That’s just not the case…. Bobby Ross recruited, George Oleary recruited, and a good coach will find a way to get the best athletes into school! Period!

This years recruiting class should be top 30 if we get 20 or more recruits. Jabari will end up being a four star LB on all sites. Caldwell and Vad are four star players. We might get another one. Probably more three stars on the way. I believe this years class is going to the be the best of PJ’s classes.

GT Sambo, PJ better than Richt? Really? Richt has had a tough go the last couple seasons but he is 7-2 in bowl games and 2 of those are BCS bowl wins. Richt has had 10 wins or more in six different seasons in the best conference in America and two SEC titles. Richt’s best season record wise was 13-1.

In comparison PJ has only coached in a BCS conference for two full seasons. He is 0-2 in bowl games( and beaten handily in both) and has had one season of ten or better wins in one of the weakest conferences in amercia. His best record is 11-3. So please explain how PJ is a better coach than Richt because the numbers and experience( in a BCS conference) certainly don’t make a good case for you’re coach.

This bowl season will tell the tale on both

October 25th, 2010
4:17 pm

Yes, GT Sambo, I am a retired UGA grad and loving the reading on y’all’s site.

This upcoming bowl season ( the lower level bowls ) will prove where both conferences are with their fan support and TV market value. It is all about money, yes indeed.

Take a 7-5 UGa and they will likely wind up in the Music City. Take a 7-5 NC State or Va Tech and they may not even get a bowl. Take a 6-6 or even 7-5 GT ………… they will play way, way, way out in Seattle in the Coffee Grinder Bowl’s …….. first year. They are historically the KING of low, low, low level bowls for sure. Look at the GT 50 year record withONLY two Orange trips and that is it. I will indulge you and count that lowly Citrus in 1990, even though America saw the night that Colorado stomped UGA, that THEY were THE 1990 NCs.

Take a 9-3 SC or even at 8-5 and they will end up in the Outback and a 8-5 Miami would be in the Weedeater. It is about NATIONAL TV market value and brand recognition and beyond the old U and the very old FSU, there are simply not any worthy 8-5 type of ACC teams. The SEC 8-5 teams DO HAVE low level bowl worthiness and this bowl season will bare this fact out.

GT is playing for a 6-6 year for sure. Va Tech ( UGA spotted them 24 points in the Chic Fil A Bowl four years ago and then blew them out ) and Miami are no good …………BUT they will handle the triple wish bone, double back option on the keeper system of CPJ. He is a joke.

When y’all come to Athens, as bad as UGA is ( we are growing as a young team ) UGa will wipe out GT for the 9th time over 10 years and for the 12th time over 16 and the 30th time over like 38 years.

CPJ is a small boy ball coach. That he is and now …………….now ………….you all know it. I have GT pals and they think that CPJ is a clown.

AAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHHA

PS get AL Groh to wave his 1973 NFL ring around …………that will really impress the GT recruits. AHAHAHA

Gt4ever, thank you for being honest about the recruiting. I’m a UGA fan who has a lot of close family members who are TECH fans so I try to be respectful when comparing the two schools. Tech is certainly a special place for academics ( my uncle was a brilliant man and head of one of the research dept for over 40 years and a die hard football fan) but they can certainly recruit because they offer a business management degree. I know this because I was very good friends with a couple of the players on the 1990 national championship team and they all were in the management program. Those guys were not above average in academics coming out of high school either. Like you said Bobby Ross did really well recruiting at Tech and Gailey also brought some good players in so it can be done. Maybe Tech can’t quite recruit at an SEC level but with the state of Georgia one of the best recruiting hotbeds in America there is no excuse not to do pretty well. The whole academic excuse just doesn’t hold true.

OldGTFan… thats great that you can calculate the drag on the ball but if you cant get it into the endzone does it even matter? well nesbitt can work on that while he sits on the bench because as clemson showed if you just stop the one offensive move (the run) that gt has then the game is basically over. GT is a one dimensional team. run, run, run if it doesnt work try passing… oooh thats right nesbitt cant pass to save his life… but yet he is still a quarterback! by the way what kind of drag was on the ball when your “running back” nesbitt carried for only 2 yards last week? was it attached to an anchor or something? damn what a “drag”…. did we even know what drag was when you were in school? just wondering? i have been reading the blog and you havent posted anything worthwhile… seems like you are an angry old man who is just here to argue but has nothing to say? didnt know the senior center had computers?

I am tired of Tech beating themselves. This past week our defense held for a great stop and forced a punt on Clemson’s first drive, only to have a roughing the kicker auto first down penalty. The next play, a LONG TD run. That should have been good field position for Tech’s first offense drive, and a quieted down Clemson fan base. Instead, down by a TD and a pumped up fans for the rest of the game. You cant start that way in away games.
Penalties, especially roughing passer/kicker and hits out of bounds are KILLING us this year! WTF!

Who ever knocks Nesbitt as a bad passer this year is either stupid or has not seen any games. Nesbitt would be a Heisman runner if he had any hands to throw it to. Peeples and Hill couldn’t catch an STD in a Bangkok whorehouse. How many passes placed between the numbers will they drop in the endzone this week?

Hey hokie, the point of my comment had nothing to do with a ball, a game, or a player. It was intended to point out that you obviously don’t have the where-with-all to enjoy your teams win without mucking it up by opening that gaping hole under your nose and letting all the air out of your head. Do you think Dabo would allow Tie-rod (what names, there must be a bubba in there somewhere) to come over and give coach Johnson some pointers on quarterbacking, or do you think thats asking just too much ? My point this time, I’m sure it’ll go over your head again, is “get a life young fella, there’s more to it that a kids game”.
