Tech’s path back to the ACC title game

Although Georgia Tech (5-3, 3-2 in the ACC) is two losses behind Virginia Tech and Miami in the ACC’s Coastal Division, it is still possible for the Yellow Jackets to advance to Charlotte and the Dec. 4 conference championship game.

Here is one scenario:

The Yellow Jackets must win out, beating Virginia Tech, Miami and Duke. Defeating the Hokies and Hurricanes would give the Yellow Jackets the first tiebreaker in the two-team or three-team scenario, which is the head-to-head match-up. A loss also would be Miami’s second in conference play, bringing it level with Tech. Miami also has games remaining against Maryland and Virginia, but losing either seems unlikely.

The Hokies would have one loss, but still have games at North Carolina and at Miami. They also must host Virginia. Losing to the Cavaliers doesn’t seem likely, but Virginia Teach stumbling on the road to the Tar Heels or the Hurricanes could happen.

So, despite Tech’s two losses within the conference, they can still defend their title. And, though it seems unlikely when considering how it played in the loss to Clemson, it’s not an unthinkable possibility either.

What say you? Do you think Tech can defeat either the Hokies or Hurricanes?

I think Tech has a better chance to win a shootout with the Hokies, because their defense’s front line is built more on speed than power, a la Clemon’s or Miami’s, or Iowa’s last year. But that’s just my opinion as of now. That’s also assuming that Tech has its special teams issues worked out.

So, tech has more national championships that UGA. So what? Ask any Dawg fan and he’ll tell you different. Why? Because we can’t stand the fact that our little brother has more than we do. Envy, it explains why all of us Dawg fans are on a Tech blog.

We have no business in the ACC Championship Game. As always we are a one and done team! I put the blame squarely on CPJ’s fat shoulders, he can not and will not adjust to another teams defense.

GT will win 1 of the 3 ACC games. ACC defenses are figuring out the option, while GT isn’t making adjustments.

Why Why Why can’t GT have two good years in a row?
Is it that we can’t get the recruits or is it the coaching?
Please tell me WHY?????

ashamed Techfan? That is low. PJ is neither Gailey nor Lewis.
Hell Gailey wasn’t Lewis.

You have a good coach. He needs to recruit a little better than he does, but he’s about as good as it gets for Offensive X & O’s.

GT89 – nice to see a fellow Dawg fan parading as a Tech fan. You really must be more clever though. If CPJ is known for anything it is making adjustments – he’s admired by opposing coaches for that (on the record mind you).

I think Tech has an outstanding chance to be at the ACC Championship Game. The game has never been sold out and there should be plenty of tickets this year. If they act now I bet they could buy a block of 125 together. If they wait they might have to split up.

As a UGA alum and an outsider looking on. It seems Josh Nesbit is not playing nearly as good as he did last year. His reads on the option are suspect at times and his accuracy is terrible. I really wished he would have came to UGA not as a QB but as a safety since that was what UGA was recruting him as. I see Tech beating Duke and maybe Miami.

jasont13,
Very good post from an intelligent UGA fan. He’s probably right about our wins, and I think he’s definitely right about Nesbitt. I think Joshua Nesbitt is a total warrior, and I love that mentality out of a QB in this offense. Not everyone has that (see Washington, Tevin) However, he has missed a lot of option reads this year, and I don’t know exactly why that is.

Thanks delusional for the clarification, but I think if you take a few minutes to read these comments, you will find that most Tech fans are in agreement with you. No delusion here, just the realization that we need to make some changes from where things are right now. The ACC is only an option if the rest of the league lays down, just like the SEC. If that happens, so be it, but not really satisfied with that result. How satisfied will you be if UGA manages to back their way into the sec east with likely 4, maybe 5 conference losses?

Clemson should beat us after so many three point games, that Tech lucked out on. We beat Clemson when it counted and we were damn lucky then. These guys are better than those Tommy B teams. There linemen are tougher. They hung with Auburn for an overtime loss at Auburn. They didn’t lose a beat at running back either, have the same quarterback. A few things change and we could have won that game, but they are a good football team.

I always enjoy reading some of the comments. The typical Georgia fans complaints: Tech is nothing compared to Georgia, it’s not even a rivalry anymore. Paul Johnson is an idiot, his high school offense will never work at this level. Nerds go to tech, they aren’t real football fans. To answer all of these points-Tech and UGA are rivals. Anyone who thinks not might as well forget about the UGA-UF rivalry as that series is more lopsided recently than ours. Teams are judged by championships, and Tech has more than Georgia. Paul Johnson’s offense DOES work. He won an ACC Championship with it. His offense scored more points against a Georgia defense than a Georgia offense with at least three first round picks on it (including AJ Green) was able to score on a mediocre Tech defense. Are tech fans obnoxious, crazed rednecks? No. Are many of the followers bandwagoners who hop on when tech is doing well, then criticize tech for being awful when times get tough? Sure. But what team doesn’t have followers like that. I don’t consider them fans because a true fan supports their team in the good and bad. I saw a lot of UGA followers putting on their Alabama shirts ready to cheer them on. Why? Because they were winning when their dawgs were losing… As far as the shots below the belt, anyone who thinks Johnson is a little hefty needs to look at older pictures of Richt. The man has easily put on a few pounds while CPJ has lost a few pounds. UGA followers, just a heads up. Cops in Athens do not target football players. Anyone misguided enough to believe that, well, you probably are perfect to be a Georgia follower. It feels good to get this off my chest.

Delusional, let’s assume that UGA runs the table and wins the sec east with three conference losses. Are you happy with that? Considering that last year, Bama and Florida met in the dome with no losses between them, it is fair to say that the east at least has had a dropoff. That being the case, would you agree that winning the east in a deflated year is less than satisfying? I personally would like to see Tech take VT and Miami, as unlikely as that is, and get to the ACC championship game. But it would be a very unsatisfying achievement. I would prefer to elevate our game rather than seeing the competition decline. Having said that, I think Tech would be extremely lucky to split VT and Miami, and UGA would be equally lucky to get by Auburn. Thoughts?

History Professor, I wouldn’t say the SEC East is down this year, it is the lack of coaching for the teams that has the East so bad. When you compare the recruits Georgia gets to Tech’s its almost not fair. But then Georgia loses to Colorado, lack of coaching. Even Florida gets the top players in the nation but they have the wrong QB running the offense and that is horrible coaching

Delusional, all great points, but regardless of the reason, the sec east is diminished this year. Whether it’s coaching, players etc, the wins and loses tell the story. Delusional Fans, I have to disagree with your assessment that the coaching is bad. Fact is, this is the same Urban Meyer who won two national championships, led an undefeated Utah team, and also led a smaller school (the name eludes me at the moment) to a successful season. This is the same Mark Richt that won a couple of SEC Championships and a Sugar Bowl. Coordinators will come and go but when the coaches are the same, the strategy is typically the same as well, with a little bit of margin for error depending on the coaches tendencies

Outside Observer most fans would agree that Mark Richt won those SEC Championships with the previous coaches recruits. He hasn’t won a SEC Crown since. And if Urban Meyer was a good coach then why is he running the wrong offense with Brantley. It is terrible coaching. Mark Richt had the #1 team in the nation 2 years ago, and with all of that talent he didn’t win anything. Tim Tebow made Urban Meyer and anyone can win in a small conference which Utah plays in.

Your first point might be true, but didn’t UGA finish the year at #2 in the nation a few years back after stomping Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl? As far as Meyer goes, he is running the offense he knows. Could he have made a lapse in judgement thinking Brantley can run this offense? Maybe. But the kid is trying to live up to unrealistic expectations. It’s tough to be yourself when people want you to be the next Tebow (see Hill, Stephen toughted as some to be the next Bay Bay). And you are forgetting that Utah beat several good teams that year including BYU and Pitt. By the way, I appreciate the spirited debate with a classy fan. You don’t get that often on these blogs

Since I was accepted to Tech, I became a Tech fan through and through. My first game? The loss to Fresno State in the Humanitarian bowl. However, I have been priveledged to see a winning team ever since. I have been able to enjoy an ACC Championship, a victory in Athens, and a trip to the Orange Bowl. If you are asking if I am not a true fan, I promise you, the loss to Georgia last year in front of me hurt me as much, if not more than it hurt you.
