Tech’s path back to the ACC title game

Although Georgia Tech (5-3, 3-2 in the ACC) is two losses behind Virginia Tech and Miami in the ACC’s Coastal Division, it is still possible for the Yellow Jackets to advance to Charlotte and the Dec. 4 conference championship game.

Here is one scenario:

The Yellow Jackets must win out, beating Virginia Tech, Miami and Duke. Defeating the Hokies and Hurricanes would give the Yellow Jackets the first tiebreaker in the two-team or three-team scenario, which is the head-to-head match-up. A loss also would be Miami’s second in conference play, bringing it level with Tech. Miami also has games remaining against Maryland and Virginia, but losing either seems unlikely.

The Hokies would have one loss, but still have games at North Carolina and at Miami. They also must host Virginia. Losing to the Cavaliers doesn’t seem likely, but Virginia Teach stumbling on the road to the Tar Heels or the Hurricanes could happen.

So, despite Tech’s two losses within the conference, they can still defend their title. And, though it seems unlikely when considering how it played in the loss to Clemson, it’s not an unthinkable possibility either.

What say you? Do you think Tech can defeat either the Hokies or Hurricanes?

I think Tech has a better chance to win a shootout with the Hokies, because their defense’s front line is built more on speed than power, a la Clemon’s or Miami’s, or Iowa’s last year. But that’s just my opinion as of now. That’s also assuming that Tech has its special teams issues worked out.

I sure am glad all of UGA’s football glory doesn’t date back to leather helmets and single bar facemasks RambleOn84. If you have to go that far back your program has to really suck. Since Bobby Dodd, how much of anything has GT won. Seriously. You’re not that far above a .500 winning percentage over the last 50 years. You’re gonna have to do better than that RambleOn84. It’s now that you have to sit and endure all those defeats. I’m sure going back 60 years can’t make you feel that much better.

Being a tech fan gets more depressing each year. Even when everything goes perfect, we can only win 1/2 of a championship. Paul Johnson is another average coach and will go down in Tech history with the likes of Chan Gailey, Bill Lewis, etc. Only good enough to beat UGA every 7 or 8 years. Even Ray Goof beat us year after year. I am tired of pulling for an average team. Either hire a national championship calliber coach or lose your fans.

My dear Cindy, if we are to discard historical facts that fail to support our arguments, such as accomplishments in the so-called leather helmet area, how much time has to pass before 1980 becomes off the table?

Cindy, ok lets go back to recent history. How far back does Gt have to go for a conference championship, oh that’s right, last year. UGA, try five years and counting. How about NC, how far does GT have to go. Back to 1990. How about UGA? Try 1980. Hmmm…. seems to me GT has done ok in the modern era.

Tech Fans are sad. All 12 of them

They thought they were going o have something special with CPJ. That they would finally start beating UGA. They would finally start winning conference championships ( Although not sure if winning the ACC is something to be proud of. By far the weakest BCS conference) And they were actually talking NC before the season.

Now reality has hit. They realize that the pop warner offense can be stopped. That they are really back to being what they always were.

Mediocre.

Meanwhile UGA has hit a rough patch the last few years but a team and coach who won 90+ games in 9 years …. well my money is on that team coming back a lot faster.

Hey it’s not my fault the official record shows 1/2 NC GT Sambo. It’s official record. Nothing can change that. And didn’t GT play a much lower ranked opponent in Nebraska in their bowl that year. At least UGA and Notre Dame was 1 against 2 and won on the field. GT can’t even say they won that 1/2 NC on the field.

GT Sambo the answer to that is pretty obvious. It was the ACC. You know. That tallest midget thing. And then you had to play Iowa. How’d that work out?

Cindy

And ashamedTechfan has a point. The best Tech team in 20 years couldn’t even beat a bad UGA team. Kind of makes that ACC title pretty meaningless when combined with that Iowa fiasco.

ashamedTechfan,
What do we have to be ashamed of? We won the ACC last year. We’ve gone to high level bowl games in consecutive years. And we are doing all of this with a football program that does not have the built in advantages in terms of size, conference, admissions or facilities that other programs have. Any true GT fan is proud of the way our program has operated over the last couple of years. I enjoyed watching GT football when O’leary was here, but we had NCAA issues on his watch. Chan came in and by all accounts ran a very clean program, but we were running a pro style offense and competing for the same recruits as UGA and a lot of other schools. That’s why I like CPJ and his offense. It’s different and we recruit different types of players. That’s why I also liked the idea of running the 3-4 (although UGA and Alabama both also run a 3-4, so that doesn’t help us as much on the recruiting side).

I thought that “old gold engineer’s” statement was strange…”There’s no shame in holding Clemson to 27. If we hold teams under 30, we should be able to beat them. The offense is not pulling its weight.”

When is holding teams between 27 to 30 points a good thing? Defense wins championships and you should shoot for holding teams to 15 to 18 points per game as an essential ingredient to winning most of your games. It’s ridiculous to expect any offense to score 30+ points per game week after week. It just won’t happen. You have to have a defense that will keep you in every game and the Yellow Jackets just don’t have it right now.

Offense? Now that’s a different story. Tech is just not as good this year as they have been the previous two years. They definitely cannot score 30+ points per game without the ability the complete a few passes down the field.

First order of business is learning how to tackle. Tech still needs to work on how to get off blocks and how to initiate and sustain blocks, or maybe better yet figure out which guy to block. There wasn’t a whole lot of any of those going on Saturday at Clemson.

Cindy refuses to recognize certain nc’s, well so do I. As far as I am concerned, the 1980 nc has and always will be Florida State as was awarded by Rothman. I will gladly allow UGA to claim their part of this shared NC, but there were four other programs that received nc designations that year as well. See what fun we can have when we pick and choose which rules and facts best serve our individual purpose.

Wishful thinking at best. This team has a zero chance of winning any of the remaining games but Duke, and maybe UGA because of the rivalry factor. They are simply average at best on offense and very below average on defense and special teams. There is just no other way to spin it. Forget the ACC and just pray we can keep the bowl streak alive.
