The perfect game?

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson recently said the goal each week is the perfect game: Starters on offense score on every possession they are in the game, starters on defense stops them on every possession, no turnovers.

But there are common-sense limits…for everyone, including him.

“There are several areas that we have gotten better at, but can we improve? Sure. I think it all comes back to expectations. A great example is on offense, we aren’t where we would like to be but we are still averaging 31 points a game and are third or fourth in the league in total offense. It is a lot better than it used to be, but it is not up to everybody’s expectations and our expectations. Sometimes I am not sure if I create some of that myself because I have such high expectations. There are very few offenses that score every time they get the ball. That is our mindset, though.”

While it hasn’t happened during this two-plus seasons at Tech, he was asked if any of his teams at Georgia Southern or Navy had the perfect game.

He said he remembered beating Johnson C. Smith 76-0 when he was coaching the Eagles. The victim was actually Fayetteville State. And there were a couple of issues….a lost fumble and two punts. So perhaps that proves Johnson’s point that very few offenses score every time.

I thought it might be fun to find that boxscore, courtesy of sportsillustrated.com

Or, he could have been remembering this 84-3 gem over Johnson C. Smith, when Mike Sewak was coaching the Eagles. While the offense was almost perfect (two punts), the defense allowed the field goal:

Would like to see GT put up passing completion percentages like those two. 75% and 100%.

The 84-3 game would be a good candidate, except Johnson wasn’t the coach in 2004, Mike Sewak was.

if we must beat somebody 222-0 again may that team be the one from Athens and let’s make sure all the GT players take off for the end zone to celebrate after each touchdown..how many penalities would that be if we scored 222 points?

girl know better than you, getting a little ahead of ourselves aren’t we? You’ve beaten Georgia once in 9 years and your’re talking 222-0 victory. My 9 month old just started crawling. I guess we should start getting him ready for the next Boston marathon according to your airheaded Techie logic.

Thanks.

I have lived in GA for 13 years and I still don’t understand the attraction to college football. The fans range in age from the very old to the very young, some of these fans graduated from college 60 years ago. I guess the attraction occurs because there are few other teams worthy of any kind of attention in the south. I come from NY and lived in MA for 22 years, between NY and Boston there are 12 professional teams, so why would anyone in that area be interested in collegiate teams.

Before anyone tells me to go back where I come from, I am in about 7 months. My sentence in the south is over.

To CP : Fully understand your confusion. We have professional teams & only one championship. Your Jets, Mets, Yankees, Boston,Rangers, Phillies all have world championships.
Up North, you don’t even have any D1 college football teams except for Boston College . It’s hard to follow college football it it doesn’t exist. Your writers write about pro sports.

In the South, it’s college football & everything else . GA Tech & UGA have beenl National Champions. All of Georgia’s border states have at least one school that has a National Champion.
Now do you get it ???

You see, hemorrhoids are like Yankees in the deep South. They may go back up, but you can always count on them coming back down at some point. …

I’d like to see a 76-0 game from GaTech, my alma mater. I recall the coach when I took gymnastics there, Houser, was a Georgia Southern grad. I got a B in his course. I’ll try to watch this game today, and I do not want to see any pink worn by Tech. Maybe it’s Clemson’s turn since it’s still October. Did Clemson wear pink last week? If not, they better hurry up and wear it because the month’s almost over. Will they refrain from wearing it because they do not want to look like the pink panthers of Pitt, as opposed to the tigers of Clemson? Maybe Clemson can wear a little orange, white, purple and pink, and come out on the field looking like colorful circus clowns of Ringling Brothers, with a tiger show inside a cage.
