Stats that matter: Tech vs. Clemson

Georgia Tech (5-2, 3-1) will take on Clemson (3-3, 1-2) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be televised by ABC regionally.

Here’s a look at some key stats that could determine the game, with NCAA rank in parenthesis:

Category……………………Georgia Tech………Clemson

Rushing offense . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 328.1 (2) . . . . . . .165.3 (47)

The Yellow Jackets had 634 rushing yards in two games against the Tigers last season.

Passing offense . . . . . . . . . . . . . .85.0 (119) . . . . . . .180.0 (89)

The deep threat has been the Tigers’ issue this season. However, they welcome wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins back from injury this week. He had 13 catches for 115 yards in the season’s first five games.

Total offense . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .413.1 (44) . . . . . . .345.3 (80)

Scoring offense . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .31.9 (41) . . . . . . . .30.8 (45)

Rushing defense . . . . . . . . . . . . . .151.7 (65) . . . . . . .143.3 (55)

While a few of Tech’s defenders said they won’t miss trying to tackle C.J. Spiller, they expressed their respect for Andre Ellington. Small and fast, like Spiller, Ellington is averaging 79.3 rushing yards a game. He’s scored eight touchdowns.

Pass defense . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .195.6 (42) . . . . . . .214.3 (67)

Total defense . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .347.3 (45) . . . . . . .357.7 (55)

It seems odd that Clemson, featuring Da’Quan Bowers, could be giving up this many yards a game. Of course they’ve also played three teams that are pretty good on offense this season: Auburn, Miami and North Carolina. They lost all three of those games.

Scoring defense . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .23.1 (55) . . . . . . .19.3 (T-29)

This total has been dropping for Tech each of the past three weeks.

Net punting . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .31.6 (114) . . . . . . . .40.0 (14)

Punt returns . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .6.3 (87) . . . . . . . . .13.4 (16)

Jerrard Tarrant seems like he’s very close to breaking a return for a touchdown. He returned two for scores last season.

Kickoff returns . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .20.2 (86) . . . . . . . .23.9 (32)

Turnover margin . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .14 (T-57) . . . . . . . .67 (28)

Tech is making hay in this category. They had a minus-3 margin before the Middle Tennessee State. After creating six (four interceptions, two fumble recoveries) they are on the good side.

Sacks . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2.1 (55) . . . . . . . . .2.8 (19)

Bowers is the one-man catalyst for Clemson in this category, as well as the next one. He is second in the country with 9 sacks this season.

Tackles for loss . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .6.3 (50) . . . . . . . . . .8.3 (5)

Sacks allowed . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1.0 (T-18) . . . . . . .1.0 (T-18)

This is a fairly surprising stat considering that Clemson averages 28 passes a game, compared to Tech’s 12.3. They like to roll out Kyle Parker, who is very good at throwing on the run.

Nice column Doug. Tech and Clemson seem to match up pretty well. Should be a close game, not that they ever aren’t. This is one of the most memorable series that there are for GT and CU fans. I remember “The legend is born in Calvin Johnson,” and going into Death Valley two years ago and squeaking out with a win. Not to mention the two electrifying games last year. Those were amazing to watch.

GA Tech needs to win this one very badly. It doesn’t matter if we win by 1 point, as long as it’s a “w”.

I hope the Tech players continue their improvement and really focus for this game – especially the defense and the wide recievers.

We’ll learn a lot tomorrow. Hope it’s good. Need zero fumbles, and some fierce D.

Yep…hold onto the ball and limit the big plays on defense and we have a chance.

Based on experience & knowledge:

Al Groh > Dabo Swinney

Paul Johnson > Kevin Steele

GT has ALL O-Lineman healthy now, and 2 DT’s back healthy now.
GT WRs have been playing better.

However, CU is LOADED on Defense.

Last time GT played at Clemson (ALL purple uni’s),
GT got crushed 31-7 in 2006.

Gonna be a VERY close game.
Will be decided by a very late score (as usual with this series).

Gut feeling says CU is “due” for a win in this series.

Expect to see CU “bring the whole freakin house” on D on
ALMOST EVERY SINGLE SNAP for the entire 1st half vs GT Offense.

CU-D will look to put some “shots” on Nesbitt.

CU will “dare” GT to go over the top.

Will GT bring some “trickeration?”

For GT to win, the passing game…MUST…DELIVER.

The only benchmark:

GT: 30 UNC: 24
CU: 16 UNC: 21

Stat that matters:

These two teams are a combined 7-5 and this game is being billed as one of the biggest in the ACC.

Here’s hoping the Tigers put a whipass on the bumblebees. The ACC is really a joke.

The players and coaches can’t look ahead, they know if we win this one, the next one gets bigger. But as a fan (and I’m sure CPJ has thought this thru also) we can still get to the ACC CG if we don’t win tomorrow. But every game becomes a must win. Even if we are victorious tomorrow, VT is a must win and UM might be too.

KEy for tomorrow is to take care of the ball and not be 1 dimensional (at least 8 completions)

I don’t know that stats really matter in this game. Tech will need to play it’s best game this week to win. You see some flashes of what they are capable of, but then the mistakes happen. They haven’t put together a consistent effort on any side of the ball this year. The next 3 games will tell the story “Will the real Georgia Tech please stand up”

Tech’s playing better every week. Tech has owned Clemson in recent seasons. Tech is statistically better on both O and D than Clemson. Tech has Paul Johnson. Clemson has Dabo Sweeney. Tech beat UNC, which Clemson lost to. Tech’s 5-2, Clemson’s 3-3. Tech by 5, and it’s only going to be that close because the noise in death Valley will cause some false starts for Tech’s O-line.

I feel like we are straying away from what CPJ was meant to do.. run the option. what was up with all the passes today? the times we had good runs.. or most of the times, were pitched out or AA found a hole up the middle. The option works. it is clear to see but when you mess with something that works, it can result into a failure.. if it ain’t broke don’t fix it… in this case go back to what we originally ran.. and get a new DC wihile you are at it. Al is horrible.

I couldn’t hit water if I fell out of a boat. I couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn if I was 5 yards away. Everyone know it, I wear Cameron Newton underwear and I only wish I was half as good as him. I only completed 31% of my passes today for 83 yards and 1 INT. I had 15 carries for a total of 2 yards. Does CPJ really think we will win another game this year with me at QB??????? WE (Georgia Tech) ARE THE RED HEADED STEP CHILD OF THIS STATE. UGA is our DADDY!

Yea………let’s blame Joshua for his pass that bounced off the face of our #1 receiver in the end zone, and for our stellar special teams play, and that superior defensive effort.
